      You're both wrong... Because of centuries of overfishing, AND Fukushima, about 40% (might even be 50% by now) of their tuna is now caught in American and Canadian waters, put on ice, and then flown to Japan in less than 24 hours... Remember, different varieties and cuts of tuna to the Japanese is like what Angus Beef is to Americans, so they're willing to pay top dollar for it! Therefore, tuna fisherman both in Canada and the US make some DAMN serious money because of all this!

    Every year a couple of Japanese dudes who have huge sushi chains show up at the first auction of the year to throw their $$$ around. I've only had a handful go to the Japanese auction, they only send the best of the best.

    Tuna to them is what Angus Beef is to Americans! Therefore, Japanese housewives are prepared to pay a lot per pound (or rather, kilo) at the street markets for different varieties and cuts of these supersized fish... The waters around the Japanese Islands have been very much fished out over the centuries, and the disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant didn't help things much either, so a good portion of the Tuna is caught off American and Canadian waters and flown to Japan within 24 hours...
