Exactly. Half these idiots don't know the difference. People in LA caught 300+ lb bluefin and 200+ lb yellowfin tuna right between Catalina and San Clemente this whole month. Sport fishing boats are coming back with 220 and more yellowfin from LA. These "environmentalnuts" has never even been in a fishing vessel and don't know difference between a bonito and mackeral.
@Kevin Montrond How would people judge a fish species population? Most people assume there are department of fish and game and even NOAA that tracks the fish population. The truth is the Department of Wildlife depends on FISHERMAN to provide the information. How do I know? They check and count our catches occasionally when we get back into the landing. Most of these counts are well under the actual numbers. How do I know? We catch and release tons of fish. We can't possibly explain that we returned at least a hundred fish on every trip back into the ocean. In the case of Tuna, there are limits. When we hit limits, we stop fishing by law. We would never know how much fish is out there. The truth is most of these people spouting on fish populations have never been in the ocean to fish for them. They would have no understanding of what is out there. I go fishing almost every weekend and have a decent idea of fish populations for the targeted species. In fact, I know a friend who has buddies who are commercial fisherman. They are not allowed to catch certain species like White Sea Bass. They catch squid on a commercial basis and WSB ends up being a huge bycatch that they have to throw away dead into the water. The DFG will never see those true numbers and can only guess. Case in point, the rockfish species called Cowcods were expected to take 90 years to recover. The species has fully recovered in 2019 in less than 20 years, which is over 70 years ahead of schedule.

Patricia Rock I don't think that you understand ecosystems and the necessity of diversity of species and animals in ecospheres. Within any trophic level of an environment, biomass is to be maintained in a carrying capacity to ensure that the system remains healthy because all inner-system species are heavily dependent on each other. Any level of ecosystem organization requires a balance of each type of producer, consumer and decomposers. To remove and endanger the presence of bluefin tuna in various ecosystems across the world could have an incredibly large impact. It's not wrong to eat them, but they should be protected. They need to be a surviving species that is a maintainable food source and consumers of the ocean so that companies can continue to sell them and aquatic life is not disrupted.
Why don't the tuna men all contribute to raising baby tuna till they are large enough to survive in the open ocean? Growing baby fish costs less than growing big fish and if you can increase survival..there will be plenty in the future. Say 10% of eggs survive to adulthood. What if you could up it to 90%? And the legislations and laws are pretty much exactly like that. However this could be not further from the truth. A fishery should nurse as many small fishes [or other seafood] and release them as they catch. Obviously this could be made also by non-profit organisations, which could be paid by the fisheries. It seems just wrong for me, that the ocean is looked at as free for all resource, the same as the rainforest, and pretty much all other natural resources!

Warbird Phoenix you are absolutely right. in the 1960s, purse seiners catching fish for the canned tuna market in United States coastal waters removed huge numbers of juvenile and young Western Atlantic bluefin, taking out several entire year classes. Mediterranean fisheries have historically been poorly regulated and catches under-reported, with French, Spanish, and Italian fishermen competing with North African nations for a diminishing population.
this is just like that damn shark fin soup. ppl get obsessed with a certain fish or part of the fish and it becomes a cultural thing. blue fin is great but so are alot of other fishes
Morehead City, NC still hosts a HUGE bluefin tuna tournament every year. I can't believe they still KILL those beautiful fish, string them up for show, then THROW THEM IN THE GD DUMPSTER! This crap needs to stop NOW!
Its not true that the Japanese started to eat tuna from the admiration of the western culture... It was because preserving fresh large pieces of tuna were impossible at that time since there was no electronic fridges and technology. Tuna, especially the fatter part gets dark and gets bad easily allowing the Japanese not to prefer eating it until they got the technology to keep it fresh.
Japanese's been eating tuna for long time but tuna didn't extinct. Nobody but Japanese really care eating raw tuna until big sushi/healthy food popularity started mainly in US, then rich Chinese started eating tuna, and now it's not difficult to find sushi restaurants anywhere in the world. More people eat, tuna will befacing the threat of extinction.
I'm looking at this in 2018, and I can't help but wonder what progress has been made so far. I can't eat tuna because I'm allergic to it but hopefully there has been progress made since this video.
That is true to any fish. I used to fish along the shore of California. Years ago I got a lot of fish and now I rarely get anything except a few sardines and mackerels. There used to be a lot of fishing barges along the cost where you pay to go fishing. They are all out of business. The piracy issue in Somalia started with the protest of large international fishing ships depleting fish along the coast leaving misery to the local population. After a few years of no more large fishing ships, fish came back to Somalia!

I do not eat any seafood anymore. I haven’t for over ten years. Because even back then I was aware of how much we’ve fucked things. We need to do our part and protect our oceans. After all we came from the ocean. We need to respect it. We barely know anything about our oceans. Yet find it acceptable to destroy it.
culturally extremely active and skinny kids, we had it 3-4 times a week, minimum; in the 60-70s, we ate #1 bluefin steaks, CANNED. also, were told that it wasn't considered a really valuable resource, like salmon. it was very, very, inexpensive, like our cheapest sardines. it was our ramen times 20, but, pure protein & oils. amazing, ten cents a pound cans.
I like the fish that bites my hook. Redfish, Sheepshead, Mahi and Swordfish. Every other fish can kick rocks. I live on the Atlantic by the way and by the longest black water river in America.
No, it is screwed because of people. What we need to do is stop irresponsible reproduction. We should start this ourselves by banning immigration from all countries with over a 1% population growth rate. We should also base all financial aid on how well countries control population. Too many people are the problem, not money.
I like the information im getting from the video but the reporter/interviewer looks really frustrated or anxious or annoyed. And I think the person leading us through an investigation should appear very neutral but it seems like he is very against the idea of eating bluefin. Looking at him asking the chef questioning in a very aggressive sort of away makes me intensively uncomfortable. I just feel the viewer should feel free to experience and decide how they feel towards the topic being discussed.

Morehead City, NC still hosts a HUGE bluefin tuna tournament every year. I can't believe they still KILL those beautiful fish, string them up for show, then THROW THEM IN THE GD DUMPSTER! This crap needs to stop NOW!
Japan has been ilegaly fishing in Colombian's oceans for a long time.
because colombia only care about cocaine and coffee
Plummet and the USA only cares about prescription pills, meth, heroin, crack, cocaine... don’t tell me its false cause its not
@@pascualsmithvaldes9038 I dont care about the USA lol
Plummet 😂😂
Wait, Columbia has a coast ??
El Bottoo salmon is farmed not an endegered specie
Don't shift the blame. Japanese consume 80% of all blue fin harvested.
I'm looking at this in 2018, and I can't help but wonder what progress has been made so far. I can't eat tuna because I'm allergic to it but hopefully there has been progress made since this video.
Imagine being the dude that catches the last blue fin and someone offers you a million dollars
THE JAPANESE CARING ABOUT FISH GOING EXTINCT? YEAH RIGHT HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH
I feel like I watched a doc about 10 years ago about this issue, and I remember the Japanese officials being damn near hostile to the reporter.
talked about bluefin tuna extinction but still eats the blue fun tuna
I was having a rough day, and then I saw the scene with the Japanese auctioneers and immediately felt better. Thanks, Vice!
Rex ito sounds like Donald trump if you close your eyes and listen 😛
jay He does!
Kayla Cain I don't remember writing this 😂😛
Hahaha wtf
first thought that came to mind was this is the Asian Donald Trump
Serious question: THE HOST of this episode! Is that BUGER son from revenge of the nerds?they sure look alike 😂
Keepit Real hahahaha I literally LOL’d!
“Did you get in her pants yet?!”
“She’s not that kind of girl Booger!”
“Why?! Does she have a penis?!”

20:06 they said asians were short...
This video is so well put! Good job munchies!
17:13 best part of the video 😂😂😂😂
But they taste so good in sushi/nigiri
I do not eat any seafood anymore. I haven’t for over ten years. Because even back then I was aware of how much we’ve fucked things. We need to do our part and protect our oceans. After all we came from the ocean. We need to respect it. We barely know anything about our oceans. Yet find it acceptable to destroy it.
@@FukaiKokoro I would like to taste bluefin tuna
Japan has a huge jellyfish problem.... so why not give the farmed tuna all that jellyfish for food....
I hope you arent really THAT dumb
Oh wow this is a new level of american
culturally extremely active and skinny kids, we had it 3-4 times a week, minimum; in the 60-70s, we ate #1 bluefin steaks, CANNED. also, were told that it wasn't considered a really valuable resource, like salmon. it was very, very, inexpensive, like our cheapest sardines.
it was our ramen times 20, but, pure protein & oils. amazing, ten cents a pound cans.
1:47 he just flung it back into the ocean 😂
We are like sitting on a branch and slowly chewing it off just because we think we will not chew it off before we die.
"We have insider information." That you better get it while the gettings good, Is what he failed to say.
I like salmon better
I like the fish that bites my hook. Redfish, Sheepshead, Mahi and Swordfish. Every other fish can kick rocks. I live on the Atlantic by the way and by the longest black water river in America.
@@Ole_CornPop whoooo
So this dude's doing a special on the sustainability of blue fin by eating some at every trip.
The Japanese Auction was the funniest thing I've seen in years !!!!
🤣😂🤣😂
Watching this 7 years later and i severely doubt the situation is better
bluefin tuna were declared Least Concern in 2021
The ecosystem is screwed because of money.
No, it is screwed because of people. What we need to do is stop irresponsible reproduction. We should start this ourselves by banning immigration from all countries with over a 1% population growth rate. We should also base all financial aid on how well countries control population. Too many people are the problem, not money.
This is sickening. People will make a species go extinct for a flavor that could easily be replaced.
IS THIS SETH ROGEN?
dude growing bluefin isnt a solution if they get snatched up by another net when you set them free
Lol the guy in the front 1:46 pulled the fish back into the ocean😂
21:55 wow who is that beauty right there??
lol, thinking the same thing
he looks like booger from revenge of the nerds.
Are bluefins going extinct? Depends on who u ask.
I dont see cows going extinct?
Cows are not all killed in some farms.
Cows are all farmed. Tuna are not. Once tuna are farmed, then we can be confident. The real long-term key is population control.
me: **watching this in school**
also me: **forgot to bring headphones because my brain is smooth and square**
the captions: *"i am speed"*
"Kinky university is the university that I wanna go to!" ... walks through door... "ah fuck it smells like fish in here..."
Eat it in to extinction fuck it tastes so good ..
I agree, fuck the tuna!
Patricia Rock I hope one day a specie will hunt down humans to extinction and wipe them out. They don't deserve to live. Fucking selfish retards.
First time I saw a Caucasian white guy being towered over by an Asian Mongoloid. A Kodak moment 😂😂😂😂😂
I like how the host doesn't need subtitles but the president of research or something needs translation when he spoke English. 🙄🙄🙄
The plucker, you could use a bucket, small motor and bearing
OH SHIT THE CAMERAS ON ME act natural.... ACT NATURAL. 20:37 lmao
Start farm raising blue-fin then.
It's too expensive now
Our god THE MOST KIND THE MOST MERCIFUL MAY GOD PLEASE BLESS THE BLUEFINS 1 like 1person stops eating bluefin
3:40 the chef looks like seth rogen 🤣🤣🤣
If this makes you angry DONT EAT SEAFOOD. I have gone seafood free for over ten years. I’m fine without it. I don’t need seafood to thrive.
