Loud Trumpets as the Elephants Return Home to Phabeni at the Orphanage!

- Following Phabeni's recent drip from Dr Rogers - herd.org.za/blog/baby-elephan... - the herd returned back to the homestead next door to the orphanage and came running as they realised little Phabeni was there. They obviously did not know why the bull had left them early that day, as this was a change to their routine. They certainly appeared very excited to see him across the fence as they approached. Phabeni's surrogate mother Setombe and her daughter Klaserie were the first to the fence, coming in fast, with Timisa and Khanyisa close by, followed by Limpopo and her mother Tokwe.
The herd helped drop Phabeni off at the orphanage earlier in the day, with Setombe walking the bull to the door, so that he could be seen by Dr Rogers and given a necessary drip. Since Phabeni had been drinking fewer milk bottles, either not finishing the full bottle or refusing to drink, we had to find other ways to get nutrition and energy into him. The drip helped immensely and the bull took his bottles that evening.
We are doing our best to not disrupt the routine of the elephants, and when Phabeni doesn't need to attend to vet visits, we ensure he stays out with the herd during the day. This prevents extra stress for him and the herd, as they are very used to their daily habit of sunrise walks in the wilderness together, and spending all day out foraging, swimming, bonding, playing, mud bathing, and walking, until the sun sets.
After his bottle, Phabeni enjoyed an evening wind-down with his sheep friends, Lammie and Spotty, and his carer Stavros and Adine, before heading to bed for a much needed and well deserved rest. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

He's turning his bedtime into fun and games. The herd really put on the gas to see their baby and once they saw that he was in good hands they went to dinner peacefully.
That was AMAZING. ALL THIS WONDERFUL LOVE. He knows it, they know it, now he can be playful and difficult. Get all that attention, funny, he is so darling. May he thrive. Also am so thrilled to see how Khanyisa loves him in her own special way.

This is the first time I have seen videos about elephants and just discovered Herd two weeks ago. I wish the whole world could be this peaceful, loving and kind. I'm so glad to know that elephants have a place to go to be treated so well. Surely God has helped to make all this happen. ❤❤

Isn't it Wonderful? Setombe and her beautiful daughter Klaserie were happy together, but along came this tiny bull and awakened something in her. Happily Klaserie loves her baby brother and the dynamic within the herd shifted so positively. Beni, keep drinking that milk and getting stronger. It was heartwarming to see Dame Setombe, Lundi, Bubi, Timisa, Tokwe, Khanyisa and Klaserie running and trumpeting direction the orphanage to meet with little Phabeni whom they missed during their foraging Only after they made sure he was doing good, they went to eat their snacks Those Ellies never ceased to amaze me It takes a lot of patience to make a baby Ellie drink his bottle of milk who only wants to go and play Thank you Stavros, Adine and all the Carers for your absolute dedication

I just wanted to say to Stavros, congratulations and a job well done for keeping with Phabeni in making sure he has the whole milk bottle to the end. Thank you stavros! You have a mountain of patience with the little bull🤗. I know Phabeni is kept in the orphanage for his safety because he’s so tiny; but I wonder if it is the source of his health issues. Little Phabeni doesn’t understand why he can’t be with his herd at night and it seems as tho he misses them😔 I guess I’m just worried because to date-Jabulani is the only orphaned bull to survive. I pray Phabeni becomes the 2nd baby bull, with Jabu to help grow this wonderful herd of Ellie’s 🥰 I know all those associated with HERD TRUST will do all they can to ensure this goal is achieved. I'll be worried for Phabeni until he turns 3 years old. I think about Shawu and Mopane when I watch Phabeni.

Maybe Phabeni could have his milk bottles with Setombe present.. She may already understand what is happening and help calm Phabeni in order for him to finish his milk.
Could you add some vitamized strained Marula to the milk? Maybe different elephant attractive flavours would encourage Phabeni to drink. Even chocolate syrup to his milk ( don't know if elephants are allergic to chocolate like dogs so need to check.). Try to find what he likes taste-wise. Sometimes milk substitutes taste awful so have to find a way to tempt this little one to take his fluids. Need to make it a positive experience for him.

Their sense of family is so strong and their love for each other, especially for the little one, is so powerful. We know it is necessary for him to return to the orphanage for the night, but it does not make it any less painful seeing all their reactions, especially Phabeni's frustration with the separation and Setombe's obvious concern with her baby's absence. It broke my heart to watch Phabeni 🐘 at the fence crying for his mama Setombe 🐘. Then Setombe 🐘 and some of the other elephants 🐘 come running and trumpeting to see her baby.😢
