You guys that are critical of this very stressful situation need to understand a few things. The temp outside was around 35 degrees. The hole was pretty small, just big enough for the horse to be vertical. Rocky ground makes quick digging very difficult, even with a backhoe. His legs were stuck around the underground pipe so simply lifting him out was impossible. Untacking the horse would have been extremely difficult, dangerous, and freezing. The minute the horse's head submerges, the horse would have died. Keeping the bridle on was very important to keeping his head out of the water. The dog that was "abused" and hit was getting too close to Joe and needed to back off. A dog that close to a drowning horse was making a very stressful situation for Joe even more stressful. Dogs are predators and horses are prey. Dogs stress horses out. The rider told me that he had never been so cold in his life. This could have been a catastrophe. Thank goodness for careful and quick thinking. I would love to see you critics jump in your backhoe with nothing but lassos and navigate a very stressful situation like this in under 20 minutes. There wasn't time to gather up the dogs, get a good plan together, find tow straps, and go scuba diving with a thrashing horse in a tiny rocky hole. The horse would have died without fast action. This is a raw, authentic, uncut, unplanned effort to save a horse. Was everything done perfect? Pretty close. Nobody was hurt and the horse is doing great.
It seems to me that the keyboard warriors have never interacted with a horse outside of a petting zoo and have no appreciation for how dangerous this was. You guys did amazing work with what you had and it's better that the dog get a smack on the nose than a hoof to the head.
I lived on a large farm growing up and my dad would tell us to always be sure of what we were talking about before we spoke because there may be more to the story than what you think you know. This is one of those times. People need to quit being such know-it-alls and critics and let those who were involved share the correct and true information. I've yelled at and slapped a dog's rear end before for getting too close to danger. They're inquisitive and what to see what's happening but they don't understand danger. That's where humans come in and correct them so that they don't end up getting hurt or worse. I'd like to see all those people who know better than everyone else handle this type of situation in such a calm manner cuz I'll tell you, they couldn't do it! Hugs to you Daddy Mikelson and Big Joe! God bless you both!
Ain't nobody love that horse more than you, Don. You jumped in there and saved him. A real show of character, not many people respond well in an emergency. Nice to meet you, cheers.
Awesome job, guys! Not sure if you noticed, but the other horse stood there watching quietly the whole time, and when Big Joe finally stood up out of the hole, the other horse whinnied. He knew exactly what you were trying to do and cheered when his bud stood up!
Anyone who works on a farm knows how tough these conditions are. It's colder than it looks, everyone has soaked feet, freezing fingers and toes, dirt everywhere, and a lot of frustrations and difficulty trying to lift out a big animal without hurting it. I'm here in the UK, but the job is just the same. Respect fellas.
He was far too cold and exhausted to run, even though he was able to stand make no mistake he was on the brink of going into shock and dying. They got him out just in time. Another 10 minutes in that water and the horse might not have survived. They did what needed to be done and did it quickly👍🏻
He was too exhausted. Look at the way he lays after getting mostly out of the water; it's really no different from a human collapsing on the ground with a, "Give me ten minutes." It just wasn't really a good place to do that! You can even see once he's standing that his legs are shaking under him and he probably only stays upright because he's not sure which side to fall to anymore.
I can't believe anyone could actually criticize this. This was a helluva save---that saturated ground was like quicksand. That horse nearly went under.
@Cannon_Fodder_Russians there could have been a natural spring, or just a lot of water in the surrounding area, so that any attempt to drain it would have been futile. I'm sure the people who were there knew the land and knew what they were doing.
It's always easy to armchair quarterback after the fact! Y'all weren't there in the midst of this crisis, i wasn't either! given the facts and having been around horses, worked on a ranch, almost any moment could turn into a crisis when a horse goes down, let alone add in the circumstances. The horse is stuck in a muddy, rocky, waterfilled hole, with a busted water line at near freezing! I do not know if there was any wind, that would have added wind chill. Do you know a person can die of hypothermia at 60°? We're these folks prepared for that? I doubt it! Let any one of these critics face the same situation, without injuries or death of animals or man! My hat's off to you folks, for coming out of that cold n wetness but relatively unscathed!
It's clear to see how much these people love this horse from the sheer panic in their voices. I'm so pleased they managed to get him out. Sending big hugs to you all and especially Big Joe.
Really? Are all ranchers really that incompetent and neglectful when taking care of their animals? Just witnessing that man smack that dog should make you want to call the humane society on him. Not to mention almost allowing a horse to drown. Abusing animals is a crime. 😡 4:19

O my gracious…. Did you hear the horse on land neigh when the other horse stood up. AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL animals. So relieved and happy the beauty was rescued !!!! Great work !!!!

Amazing that you noticed. What a beautiful moment when he realized his friend was up on all fours. They know, they understand a lot more than we think. ♥️
Man i love ranchers and farmers. There are no harder working, passionate people and just headstrong WILL DO Attitude in any other lifestyle. Good job saving Big Joe.
This happened to my daughter and her friend. Literally the horse, Jordy, fell in a sinkhole from a water main leak. I was the first one on the scene and literally grabbed the bridle, held his head up, and then sat on the precarious edge of the hole holding his head in my lap out of the water until others could arrive to help. Keeping his head up was the only thing on my mind. Letting go of that bridal would have meant he sunk all the way under. Fortunately, we were able to get him out safely. You guys did a fantastic job getting him out. It's a terrifying situation with no manual for what to do. Just keep trying until something works. I'm so glad Big Joe is okay! But imagine my shock to see this scenario playing out in front of me.
Hey to a true horse person, they'd rather be hurt than their horse 🐴 When/if my boys got hurt, I'd be a praying they'd be ok. Your horse is your world.
Big Joe has more than his share of 'horse sense'. He obviously trusted you all to help him, I thought he was remarkably calm with the backhoe, the directions being yelled, the inability to move. Well trained. Well bred. I am glad Big Joe came away without injury. Aside from scaring the bejeesus out of everyone.
Ditto….horses we think are strong and resilient, but in reality They can be very fragile, his labored breathing almost did me in.how ever did he get in? I love that big Joe just shook it off, in a manner of speaking. You all should be proud…to include big Joe that’s a lot of mutual trust.
True and I imagine the horse was beyond exhausted by that point too so he or she had no other choice really. I imagine it was panicked to the extreme as well .. I just love that they saved the horse
The sigh of relief from the second horse once his friend finally stood up out of the freezing muddy water was so magical too! I absolutely love horses. They’re such majestic, powerful, wise beings. 🤍🤍🤍
the fact that people could watch this video, ignore the teamwork, perserverance, composture and evident concern for the horse and do nothing but critic just says everything about who they are as people.
@@aleccullen2696 The lads standing around did seem to be a bit lost, truth be told. The man in charge was making it clear what needed to be done, but those lads were a bit slow on the uptake.
INCREDIBLE !!!! Those are True HERO'S. If you've ever worked outdoors in the winter in Mud,and Water, and Slurry, you know how bad of a situation that was. EXCELLENT RESCUE ❤❤❤
And the farmers were so calm and professional. I love the understated "Let's go home" at the end. Just another day on the farm. We had sheep; they were always looking for new and creative ways to try to die.
If a loving kind horse person, your horse trusts you. To the real horse person there's a bond that develops between you, & your horse. I know. To see your animal suffer tears your heart out.
That was some absolutely genius problem solving. Congratulations. That perseverance saved that horses life. Anyone faulting your efforts here clearly do not appreciate the situation.
@TLR5759 look, that has nothing to do with anything and it's none of your damn business. I refuse to reply to this video and help their algorithm any longer. They are clearly incompetent horse owners. And authorities will be contacted. Period.
There will always be critics. Don’t give them space in your brain. Thank you for saving this incredible beast! You’re amazing. It was amazing to watch. May it never happen again!
You guys and gal were amazing! Your quick and creative thinking gave beautiful Joe a 2nd chance at life. Never listen to the haters. They have no life!
It is amazing how calm these draft breeds are in a crisis. On another channel, a draft horse fell down into a well that nobody knew was there. Just a rotten board covering the hole up. The neighbor showed up with a bobcat and the owner went down into the well and made a sling out of logging straps. They pulled the horse up and over the lip of the well. The horse stood up and gave a big shake and walked off, like it was a normal days activity. So thankful this rescue was successful! I look forward to seeing everyone at the shoeing! Thanks for showing how its done!
My last horse was a draft cross. No fancy breeding, probably one of those PMU foals. But man, he was calm, smart, and loved his people. We got into some messes and he was like 'the humans are here, they'll figure this crap out'. I wouldn't of traded that horse for anything.
@cherylmillard2067 I think Jim Gordon was given a copy of the Budwiser Clyadales wreak at the San Antonio Texas Fat Stock show. Watch that, too. It was also amazing! They were trying to do this fancy turn, and one of the wheel horses got tangled in the harness and fell on his side. The entire team, 7 horses, stopped without being told to and stood perfectly still. They didn't even swish their tails! The grooms looked like ants and sprinted out there. They unhooked the standing horses and led them calmly away. They removed the harness from the fallen horse and then asked him to stand up, which he did. There was great cheering, and the horse marched out like he owned the place. These horses are so smart and sensible! I am still amazed at all of these rescues and thankful to the people who shared them!
😆Ya know it's the same thing with horses and dogs. The smaller they are, the more feisty and sassy they are, while the bigger and biggest ones always want to sit in your lap! You can take a Shetland pony, or a chihuahua and they act and think they are 10 ft. tall and billy bad a##, while a great big draft horse, a Great Dane, Mastiff, Akita, Shepard all think they can lay in your lap to cuddle!
Oh my gosh, what a miracle. You folks are amazing, Big Joe was saved and you all never gave up. Blessings to you all for being the best friends any horse could have.
@jjwideawake.9397 are you being serious? Because they're the ones that put that poor animal in that position. Its their neglect that caused him to be there in the first place. How in the world can anybody consider them to be responsible horse owners? 😱
@@feedyourownego I have owned horses for over 60 yrs and am still perplexed at how horses can hurt themselves in a very safe environment. Do you own horses? Do you own a large amount of land? Run herds? There are sink holes all over this country, especially on large parts of land. We had them on our 900 acre farm in Louisiana and even on our new 72 acre ranch in Oklahoma. If you knew horses sometimes they can get squirrelly even the most bomb proof ranch horses. Accidents happen. Horses can be accident prone. Horses can get hurt, cut in a pasture and for the life of you, you can’t figure out how or why. So don’t be so quick to judge these people until you have walked a mile in their boots. I applaud their efforts to get the horse out, and I can see that they love their horse, but clearly they made a mistake that got their horse in the situation in the first place. Nice team work! Clear directions. Glad Joe made it out ok! When I heard, “we lose the saddle, we lose the horse” my heart broke, knowing just how true is that fear
@@riggingpots3453 That's what makes "I'm Sorry Joe" all the more heartwarming, he was taking responsibility off the kids. Not sure if they found him like that or attached the saddle to save him before he got himself really stuck.
My heart melted at 13:01 when you heard the other horse being happy. "My buddy is safe". For you not familiar to horses, that is exactly the same sound that our horses have when we come to give them food in the morning. A general sound of happiness.
This was AMAZING! Big Joe looked so calm because he knew he was in the best hands. Watching you navigate every moment made me realize how much skill it takes to pull off a rescue like this! Who else was totally invested from start to finish? 👏

Many people don't realize how delicate this situation was and the importance of balancing urgency and ensuring you dont injure the animal otherwise the rescue effort would be of no use. That was a desperate situation and you guys got Joe out of there without any broken bones. People don’t know what it’s like to live on the land. Fantastic job getting that big beautiful baby out of there without serious injury! Big Joe had my heart from the very beginning, when the bucket of the excavator was lowered next to his head and his first reaction was to put his nose on it: "hello, what are you? Are you here to help me?" Such a sensible horse and he worked with the humans the whole time to get himself out of trouble. I look forward to seeing a video of Big Joe getting his winter shoes if possible. Pretty please with rainbow sprinkles?
Fantastic save. Congrats to the backhoe operator and the others involved. Many things could have gone wrong, but they didn't thanks to skill and not panicking. I'll bet the horse was exhausted after that ordeal. Interesting topography. Looks like an old lakebed.
I cheered out loud when Joe stood up and walked away. That will make me smile the rest of the day when I think of it. Thanks for your hard work saving Joe.
I'm so grateful to the man holding his head above the mud, he liked so exhausted, like he couldn't even hold it up himself anymore and was ready to drown 😢
I actually didn't see much terror there. I genuinely cannot believe all the comments screaming animal abuse, when this was so obviously an accident and handled phenomenally. I had to read ahead to make sure he got out ok in the end and I was still on the edge of my seat. This video triggered a memory. When I was about thirteen, my horse (geriatric OTTB) slipped into a 8' deep ravine with a creek at the bottom. Fortunately the mud was nowhere near this bad, but the walls were completely vertical and the banks so thickly overgrown we couldn't walk along and lead her the 100~ feet to shallower spot to get out. She had historically been scared of water and was now up to her flanks, so she refused to move. Thinking of it now, it was incredibly dangerous, but (after clearing all brush and limbs ahead of her) I slithered through the brambles and hopped onto her back. With some encouragement, she shook out of that 'frozen-scared' state and I was able to ride her upstream to a spot where the banks weren't so steep. She was completely unhurt by this crazy situation... but later that same day she tripped into a wheelbarrow and sustained a 3" gash to her hock. I'll bet some of these commenters would find some way to call me an 'animal abuser' too based on my story, but any person who understands horses will roll their eyes and nod. Sh*t happens; sometimes it's just dumb luck. Well done, you guys. Looking forward to the update on how Joe is doing.
You can see how anxious the dogs were too. That's why they were crowding so close - likely the border collie was trying to help by barking, a behavior that would usually encourage movement from its flock. Maybe thinking it just needed the motivation boost to get out LOL. You can see their behavior shift soon after the horse is out of the mud, their body language opening up and becoming more relaxed. What a well-loved horse!
I witnessed a horse drowning in very simular situation, years ago when I was a young teenager at the farm where I was boarding my horse. A horse was stuck in a muddy swamp and they weren't able to get him out to save him from drowning. Thank God this horse was rescued.!
This horse is named big Joe. He is draft cross that was donated to the Horseshoeing School a few years ago. Riley trained him to ride and taught him the basics. Riley’s father, Don, owner of Rocking M Quarter Horses, found him to be a phenomenal ranch horse. Joe found his home at Don’s Horse ranch in central Idaho. A few days ago, Joe fell into a deep hole in a pasture while checking cows. The hole was made by a leaky water mainline and was just big enough for Joe to wedge his whole body in. Thanks to quick thinking by Don Mickelsen, they saved him and he is making a full recovery. We will have him come to the shoeing school next week for some new winter shoes and give you an update!

You guys that are critical of this very stressful situation need to understand a few things. The temp outside was around 35 degrees. Big Joe acted like nothing ever happened!
He was knackered!
He was far too cold and exhausted to run, even though he was able to stand make no mistake he was on the brink of going into shock and dying. They got him out just in time. Another 10 minutes in that water and the horse might not have survived. They did what needed to be done and did it quickly👍🏻
@@charlesbrown4483 Thank you!
One way or another, y'all got the horse out.
Here's a idea 💡 how about digging a a deep hole 🕳️ and a channel for the water to drain into.

This happened to my daughter and her friend. Literally the horse, Jordy, fell in a sinkhole from a water main leak.

I have owned horses for over 60 yrs and am still perplexed at how horses can hurt themselves in a very safe environment.
Have a awesome day💜🙏🏼

True farmer right there. So thankful everyone is okay and to see Big Joe out of that pit
These are cowboys. Farmers deal with crops poultry and other livestock that produce food
@@Blaxican102well, cowboys aren't known to be the sharpest tool in the shed.
😢that must have been horrific.
Thank you for letting us know he's alright! Looking forward to seeing him on the channel! Get well, Joe! Good team work, dear rescue team! ❤
Really? Are all ranchers really that incompetent and neglectful when taking care of their animals? Just witnessing that man smack that dog makes me want to call the humane society on him. Abusing animals is a crime. 😡 4:19
@@fedup6969
Yes that dog smack was uncalled for and disgusting
Thank God this horse is finally safe, I hope there was a vet appointment for him immediately.
Knock off the dog comments. You aren't ranchers. They are working dogs and you have no idea of their behavior and how they are trained.
❤❤❤ thank God Joe is recovering. Way to go humans!!
Wow, some amazing quick thinking and awesome back hoe skills there. Just pleased Big Joe got out and seems okay. What a nightmare for the rider. WELL DONE DON! And Joe for being so calm.
Looks like an amazingly improvised, effective, careful and humane effort.
Remember,
impulse + ignorance = haters
I had to fast forward to the end. My heart breaks seeing an animal in distress. Kudos to you all for your hard work. Glad Big Joe is safe and doing well. 👍
There is something so primal about watching men when they are in full panic mode, because someone they love is in danger. It’s just so human. It gets me very emotional.
For ranch hands this is a terrible example of human/animal connection. These kids
Are not speaking to the horse or even just touching it's head to comfort and reassure the animal they will be ok. Sad 😔
@ that’s because the horse is in shock and none of that BS matters. What matters is saving the horse. Fortunately you weren’t out there all caught up in your emotions, and actual men and women…. grown adults, dealt with it like pros.
@@MikeySkywalker fortunately I wasn't there is correct. The old man
Was running around like a child that was lost. The dumb kids obviously have no to real connection with animals. The boy couldn't even
Pull on reins correctly. Surprised the
Horse lived from all the unnecessary trauma . You cover the animals head
To calm them and so their visual is
Not adding to stress. Professionals
Ha, good one. 🤡
Honestly, I did not see anybody panicking, not even Big Joe.
@David-lo1fo dude I don't know if you happen to notice that there isn't a whole lot of room between that horse's nose & the surface of the water. Its hard to whisper words of encouragement without risking his head going into the water. The whole point was holding his head above the water. You know to keep him alive??
My pulse and blood pressure went sky high watching that, especially when Joe's head was so close to the surface of the water. I'm so glad you were there to save him. I'll look forward to seeing him in another video.
I finished watching and have been scrolling comments for 20 minutes, my heart s still pounding!
God bless you guys saving this horse…. This is very emotional to watch what can happen on these vast ranges… but I sure hope someone got hugged… especially Joe. 🙏🏻
Farmers are very intelligent people, they never give up. This is the first for me to see a mammal rescued by people who care. GOB BLESS those who have a heart and to rescue such a beautiful horse. 🙏🐴🐎
He hasn’t got the first clue about animal safety or farming !!! State of him of that digger is a f disgrace !! Probably bought the land a few month ago and wants to look the part !!
@@Alfiepops🤡
@@Alfiepopslegit honest question: the digger/scooper looked dirty but what about it was bad condition?
@@horsetuna the manner in which he operated it , he messed about position a few times and dug the hole in wrong place wasted even more time ,, this guys no farmer I guarantee you that !! He should have dug hole away from horse letting water drain into that but hey ho I’m just a stupid carpenter what do I know !!
@@Alfiepops Nothing at all about ranching or busted water mains, that’s for sure.
You guys are heroes and anyone who criticizes is a fool.
I guess I am a fool, horse should have never been put in this situation
@ How do you know how the horse got into that mess? I don’t think it was intentional.
Fiquei sem fôlego ,👏👏👏👏 homens valentes e fiéis 😘❤️

Don is one heck of a critical, quick thinking man in a crisis situation. Amazing!
Anyone experienced with horses, always stay calm. We know what to do.
really? he didn't know his ass from his hand, digging randomly and making the situation worse
If you have a lot of money and you don't need it, I want 10,000 euros.
@@lolbots Youre displaying your ignorance quite well.
Have to admit I couldn't stand the stress of watching and had to forward to see Joe and everyone else ok. Awesome job you guys!
I know nothing of this life other than I love animals. All of you worked tirelessly to help him. You are the kind of folks the world needs more of. I understand having to get the dog out of the way. The horse was definitely stressed with the doggie. So glad everyone is good, thank you for rescuing beautiful horse ❤
That's a smart horse, all you guys did a stellar job don't kid yourself, if it ever happens again just you always remember remain calm, I've pulled out four or five horses, out of a bog, thanks everybody❤❤❤
Hats off to the whole crew! Joe is absolutely the definition of calm, cool and collected. Again, well done boys.
And gal!
We out here in suburbia have no idea the tremendous amount of hard work and perseverance in treacherous conditions it takes to nurture the land and the animals. Thanks for your love and dedication.
Wow what great team work
Great work!! Never easy getting a stuck animal out. never rescued a horse but pulled out plenty of cows stuck in water using fence wire tensioners and straps.
What an AMAZING rescue by all involved, including Big Joe! He knew you were trying to help.
The horse saved itself.
@@THXx1138- he couldn’t have gotten out on his own. He’s too heavy and was in mud. Once they get down like that, it’s rare they get up on their own.
Thank God the beautiful horse was not injured ❤
Oh MY GOD!! What a heroic rescue!!! So many constraints and obstacles. My back was getting dore just watching man trying to keep the horse’s head above water. And then the horse was almost upside down in the water!!! I am surprised no one had a heart attack persons or horse!!! Exemplary rescue!!!
Thank You for your Bravery and quick wit thinking You saved this horses life ...heros xooxxk
Just like the commenters on here, I was on pins and needles even though I knew he got out. I could feel the urgency and controlled panic coursing through you all. A mild stress test for my heart and I'm only watching this on video! Best of everything to you guys, but most especially for Big Joe! He's a champ!
I’m sure Joe and rescuers are EXHAUSTED!!! Good job.
