It seems to me that elephants are rather timid animals for their size. There is no practical reason that a herd of elephants should consider a lone hippo to be a threat or challenge of any sort. I've seen a number of videos in which wildlife guides have held off threatening bull elephants with a shout and the wave of a stick. I know there are many cases in which lone bull elephants have killed rhinos, but this behavior hardly seems like excessive bravery given the enormous size difference. In this video we watched a couple of the herd members initially back up just because a hippo got out of the water to face them. They had to assemble the whole herd to get the hippo to back down. I find the timidness of elephants to be an incongruous but very endearing characteristic.
A couple of commenters below have pointed out that a hippo could inflict serious wounds on an elephant with its crushing bite. @@herdelephantorphanage Really? All I could think was, “Buddy you are out of your league”, when the hippo got out. I know they have that big strong jaw, and a bad disposition, but Sebakwe could make mince meat out of him. No?
💯 one of the few comments that acknowledges just how dangerous hippos can be. Those incisors and the crushing strength of those jaws are nothing to be sneezed at. With humans, confrontations are tricky because the ego gets involved and it becomes about self-worth (ridiculous imo). In the wild, it's more about how much damage and injuries an animal is willing to accept (goal being none) and still be able to carry on foraging/hunting and living. It's not at all about who's stronger _overall_ (obviously eles are by far in this instance) but about avoiding needless injury.
He followed a tactic the Mongols used to do - feign a retreat to draw the opposing forces out and then surround them. Sebakwe retreated, drawing the Hippo forward, and then suddenly the Hippo was confronted by most of the Herd.
BIEN HEUREUSEMENT QU'IL N'Y A PAS EU DE CONFRONTATION ! IL Y A EU UNE INTIMIDATION DE LA PART DE NOTRE TROUPE HERD ! ET BIEN HEUREUSEMENT ! PLUS DE PAIX DANS LE MONDE 🙏 POUR 2025 🍀 🤞. LES ELEPHANTS 💕 🐘 🐘 🐘 SONT TELLEMENT PLUS INTELLIGENTS QUE CERTAINS HUMAINS.
It's so amazing to watch the interaction. Sebakwe wasn't concerned at first - he still had a resting back leg. But when the Hippo became confronting, everything changed. That is a big Hippo! And little Khanyisa practising her hippo defense kicks 😂 🐘🦛
Sebakwe was right to be wary. If the hippo wrong footed him, it could do some serious damage with its jaws. Hippos are much more unpredictable than elephants.
Such a pleasure to watch and listen to wild animals without 'music' or narration. The sights and sounds of nature are my favorite - nothing can compare. Thank you, Owen, for capturing this wild and wonderful moment!
To me, Sebakwe is the epitome of "gentle giant". He has beautiful soulful eyes & always appears to be contemplating. The hippo was extremely brave to stand its ground; it was also fascinating to watch the herd's reaction & how they supported Sebakwe & each other! Great to see the reserve looking beautiful & green again 🥰🙏❤️🐘🦛🌳🌿
That was a tense few minutes between elephant and hippo!!! I was getting very nervous until suddenly the whole herd showed up and that hippo made a beeline for the middle of the waterhole! Way to go "Team Jabulani Herd!" Thank you Owen for a fantastic video!!!
That hippo had balls of titanium to even get out of the water in the first place. The fact that it took several elephants for it to retreat is even more amazing.
Absolutely! Elephants are truly magnificent creatures. Their intelligence, social bonds, and gentle nature make them one of the most fascinating animals on Earth.
It really made me smile to see Bubi playing with Khanyisa. She so often seems to only have fun on her own. Bubi's love for the young one is very clear here ❤
WOW! Are hippos a real threat for an elephant? In or ou🎉🎉t of the water? And what is the reaction by the elephants to the area marked by the hippo? Thank you Owen, a fascinating interaction from the whole herd!❤
Elephants are usually cautious around hippos and tend to avoid direct confrontations. They are intelligent animals and can recognise the danger posed by hippos. When a hippo marks an area, elephants may steer clear of it to avoid any potential conflict.
Great videography Owen! I wonder...where does that hippo go when not in to pond? Is there a water course nearby? Is it the only "local" hippo, or is there a herd of them? With lions in the area you'd think it would be dangerous for a lone hippo out of its element! And...I haven't seen a crocodile in any of the videos...thank goodness! Has the herd chased-away all the local "crocks"? Oh...last but not least: HAPPY NEW YEAR, Adine...and the same "Best Fortune!" to all the Carers there! May 2025 bring great joy, happy unexpected surprises and great health for all the elephants...love them all, each and everyone, especially Fishan!
Hippos typically leave the water at night to graze on grass, often travelling several kilometres in search of food. During the day, they return to waterholes to relax, stay cool and protect their sensitive skin from the sun. The hippo in this waterhole is currently on his own, but hippos are social animals and he could leave to join a larger herd if he chooses 🦛 As for crocodiles, we don’t have any in this particular waterhole. They’re more commonly found in larger, deeper water sources elsewhere in the reserve 🐊 Thank you for the new year wishes. We hope you have a lovely 2025! 🎉🐘

An adult elephant can easily take on a hippo.
Poor hippo. Dude just wants to have some down time.
GET your ass back in the water. 😂😂😂
our HERD are amazed at the audacious hippo - it seemed the trumpeting did the trip- bye for now hippo-
Khanyisa is a firecracker!
Wonderful entertainment 👏. Thanks Owen.
Maybe it was a young hippo that didn't understand. Nevertheless, it got sorted out. Beautiful!
Hippos can be dangerous, they kill more people in Africa than any other animal
Passionnante confrontation qui a pu être filmée
BIEN HEUREUSEMENT QU'IL N'Y A PAS EU DE CONFRONTATION !
IL Y A EU UNE INTIMIDATION DE LA PART DE NOTRE TROUPE HERD !
ET BIEN HEUREUSEMENT !
PLUS DE PAIX DANS LE MONDE 🙏 POUR 2025 🍀 🤞.
LES ELEPHANTS 💕 🐘 🐘 🐘 SONT TELLEMENT PLUS INTELLIGENTS QUE CERTAINS HUMAINS.
It was a captivating moment!
The elephants' ability to assert their presence without escalating to aggression is truly remarkable.

💕 🙏 Thank you. You are all wonderful, elephants, of course and The GREAT TEAM 💕 👍.
It's so amazing to watch the interaction. Sebakwe wasn't concerned at first - he still had a resting back leg. But when the Hippo became confronting, everything changed. That is a big Hippo! And little Khanyisa practising her hippo defense kicks 😂 🐘🦛
Thank you Owen. You are a master of videos. Team Elephant won this stand off. ❤
The hippo was fearless, till the whole Herd stepped up against it. Lovable Herd family 😍🦛💦💦🐘🐘🐘🐘❤.Thank you, carer Owen🌺.
The dynamics between different species can be quite complex and intriguing. 🦛🐘
Hi my dear sister! If we don't get to comment in the next days, I am wishing you a prosperous and happy New Year and good health.💖🐘🐘🐘💙🥳🎉🥂🍾🎆🍀
@@AgnesKortvelyesi Oh, thank you so much 😊. I am wishing you a prosperous and Happy New Year 2025, and good health 🙏. 💝🐘🐘🐘🐘🌟🎆🎉🎇🍀.
😂 Looks like Sebakwa has a look of bemusement when the hippo puts on his power show.
Sebakwe truly embodies the "gentle giant" persona with his soulful eyes and contemplative demeanour.
Owen, knowing how dangerous hippos are ,is there to film it all !Our hero for the day !
It was a very special moment, and Owen was not going to miss the opportunity, besides he knew that the herd would always protect him.
Thanks for a great video of the elephants playing in the water. 💦. Happy New HERD. 🙏❤️🌻🌻🌻
With all of Khanyisa's back/side kicks, I'm going to start calling her the 'Karate Kid'🤣
OmG! I thought we about to witness a stampede of sorts. Really great to witnes
Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. Brave hippo He is outnumbered. I love how the ellies all support each other.
Thank you Owen! 🙂
That was a tense few minutes between elephant and hippo!!! I was getting very nervous until suddenly the whole herd showed up and that hippo made a beeline for the middle of the waterhole!
Way to go "Team Jabulani Herd!"
Thank you Owen for a fantastic video!!!
The dynamics between elephants and hippos can be fascinating to observe.
And again, there goes Khanyisa with that famous rear foot. ;o)
Thanks Owen you are a star. You are good with your videoing. Loved this one ❤
Thank you for the kind words, we are so glad you enjoyed it!
That hippo had balls of titanium to even get out of the water in the first place. The fact that it took several elephants for it to retreat is even more amazing.
😂 i can watch this all day long i love animals 🙏 ❤❤❤
Awwww Lil Miss kicker Kanyisa ❤ ❤😂🐘🐘😍
Thank you, Owen, for another beautiful video of our herd❣️
Elefantes são incríveis, poderosos, inteligentes, majestosos, belos. Que privilégio viver no mesmo planeta que esses seres!
Absolutely! Elephants are truly magnificent creatures. Their intelligence, social bonds, and gentle nature make them one of the most fascinating animals on Earth.
I love when khanyisa backs up with her surprise karate kick. ❤💕
Khanyisa is tormenting Bubi, then runny to hide under a trunk before starting again. I love watching them play in the water ❤
What a magnificent show of unity and force. Yikes. I would run as well.Khanyisa was such a cutie 🥰
It really made me smile to see Bubi playing with Khanyisa. She so often seems to only have fun on her own. Bubi's love for the young one is very clear here ❤
Hippo: this is my watering hole.
Elephants: (The entire herd) you sure about that?
Wow , wow. Wow! That was incredible to watch. Thank you Owen. Great job 😅
Incredible footage. Well done and thank you for sharing. Meisiekind is weer vol streke.
❤😂❤
Thank you for the kind words! We're thrilled that you enjoyed the footage. Meisiekind is indeed full of character and always keeps us entertained
One vs one, elephant wins if full grown. It's just that hippos are territorial and don't like to back up.
Lucky hippo. If that bull would have been totally wild, the story could have been different.
thank you Owen. 🤸🏾♂️
The hippo in this waterhole is currently on his own, but hippos are social animals and he could leave to join a larger herd if he chooses 🦛
As for crocodiles, we don’t have any in this particular waterhole. They’re more commonly found in larger, deeper water sources elsewhere in the reserve 🐊
Thank you for the new year wishes. We hope you have a lovely 2025! 🎉🐘
We are one! Mr hippo. 😂
What an awesome sight to see ❤❤❤ I just love elephants ❤ FAMILY IS WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT ❤ They have emotions just like us 😊 and care deeply for each other ❤❤
The hippo has good manners. He doesn't pee in the water. 😂
🤣👍
😂😂
I love watching the HERD especially Khanyisa .... Thank you Owen! 🙏 😍
The area looks so different with all of the green grass and trees. Beautiful. So glad that you are getting rain. I pray that it continues. The elephants are also enjoying the fresh water.
Che bello vederle vicine vicine, ADORO.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤BUON ANNO 2025 A TUTTI GLI ANIMALI DI HERD, ADINE, I FIGLI E TUTTI I CARERS ,CHE DIO VI PROTEGGA SEMPRE .BUON 2025 UN GRANDE ABBRACCIO A TUTTI.❤❤
I wish I had a family like these elephants. They know how to take care of their own.
Funny scene 😅 hippo drama 🦛 he retreated once the ellies lined up, miss K 🐘 pool party 🏊♂️😊😂❤
I had no idea hippos were that big 😮 this is the first time i actually seen them side by side
Don't mess with the elephants 🐘❤️🐘
I don't know why but every time I watch a video my heart always gets drawn to Khanyisa. ❤
Another adventurous day at the waterhole❤️❤️🐘🐘🦛!! Bubi and Khanyisa are really enjoying their splash time!! Thanks Owen for another day at the waterhole!!
Thanks for sharing this video.
@3:40 love after fleeing you see him stick his head above water ever so slightly lol
The hippo's cautious peek above the water adds a touch of humour.
Haha 😂
The hippo dwarfs the human while the elephant dwarfs the hippo☠💀
