Most publications have modern GTs with a 6 speed around mid-12 in the 1/4. I get they are probably on a prepped surface with a DGAF press car launch, but 13.8... holy. That's not far ahead of a Honda Accord 2.0T or Toyota Camry 3.5.
Those 6-speed mustangs are extremely difficult to launch even on prepped surfaces. I ran a 13.7 in my stock F150 and beat my cousin in his. He was not happy. Lol

Talking about straight line speed. Which is what muscle cars are all about and what this video featured. Couldn’t care less how my 3 row family hauler performs in the corners.
This race shocked me. once I saw the mustang pull ahead in the roll race I thought the gap was going to be much greater. Also, I didn't expect the explorer to win in the drag race so easily. I can't believe a more than 2k kg family suv beat a mustang GT performance with 86 less horsepower. That just shows that it's all in the launch. But, was something wrong with that mustang? 13.8 seconds is slow, unless I am remembering the times that the automatic one put down, but that's still a huge difference. Is the manual actually that much slower?
I had a 1973 Z/28 with slight mods that boosted HP from 245 to what I believe was about 300 HP (both SAE net figures) based on weight and trap speed. It was an automatic and ran a best of 13.8 @ 100. It would fry the tires if I didn't pedal it out of the hole. This Mustang GT doing 13.8 with 186 more HP, traction being damned, is a shame. It should do way better than that by driving it out of the hole then feeding in throttle thru first and going all out thru the rest of the gears. And with a 6-speed vs a 3-speed auto the advantage goes to the 6-speed. I don't get it.
@@99corrado As the saying goes, torque is acceleration and horsepower is speed, I would expect his speed would be higher. But Mustang has more torque than my Z/28 had as well. Essentially, Sam does not know how to feed in throttle in 1st gear, which is where he lost the race. IMO.
I own an St and I havent watched and Ill tell you how this is gonna go. The st is way heavier and is down on power to the lighter 5.0. The st will get out in front because of the awd but will be hunted down on the top end because of the small stock intercooler. How i do?
They have the same torque...horse power doesn't matter much until higher speeds...plus the SUV is AWD twin Turbo...mustang is natural aspirated 5.0....
No tlx is right it's power under the curve. The explorer will make way more power 2.5-5k rpm until the mustang starts passing it in power over 5krpm and of course the elephant in the room. The 10 spd
@@SCTBIRD1173 True. Tuning is by far the most powerful gains per dollar on these. Plus the other bolt-ons don't really add anything since the stock tune can't make full use of the extra air flow.
Turned out how I thought it would. Lighter more powerful ustang won. So glad it was a manual vs auto because if not, the gap would've been bigger. haha Another fun race as usual, Thanks for the great videos Sam!!!
I know they will stop making them, but can you track down a 2024 Ford Edge ST and do a drag race with it and the explorer ST and maybe some other competitors? I think that is the best looking SUV on the road. And i'm dying to have one even after a being on the road five years, but I would like to see if it would be worth it or just get the explorer ST. THANKS!
either the new generation GT is considerably heavier or the driver may need to honed his skill in shifting a 6 speed manual, or a combination. my 2019 6 speed GT {base} runs consistently low 12s in the quarter. what gives?
The new generation gained some weight I thought... some controversy out there over it's performance versus the old one. I am sure if things were perfect the time would have been quicker but it seems like most of the issue here was at launch and getting traction.

AWD puts the power to the ground. The rear wheel drive, 6 speed and Sam driving were the detriment on this run. (kidding Sam).
@@justme307lots of things can explain the ET differences. I'm guessing his mph was much higher than yours.
@@99corrado As the saying goes, torque is acceleration and horsepower is speed, I would expect his speed would be higher. But Mustang has more torque than my Z/28 had as well. Essentially, Sam does not know how to feed in throttle in 1st gear, which is where he lost the race. IMO.
The explorer ST is the perfect daily
I own an St and I havent watched and Ill tell you how this is gonna go. The st is way heavier and is down on power to the lighter 5.0. The st will get out in front because of the awd but will be hunted down on the top end because of the small stock intercooler. How i do?
Oh man I love that explorer
Sam!!! Hope you and the crew had a good thanksgiving fella. Very interesting vid by the way lol 🍻
Good real world matchup
Can’t sleep on boosted cars nowadays
Mustang 86 Hp more 1000 lbs lighter and that is the result? the Mustang is really not that good with the specs the car has.
They have the same torque...horse power doesn't matter much until higher speeds...plus the SUV is AWD twin Turbo...mustang is natural aspirated 5.0....
Or it could just be Sam.
@@roger3958 maybe you´re right 🤔
No tlx is right it's power under the curve. The explorer will make way more power 2.5-5k rpm until the mustang starts passing it in power over 5krpm and of course the elephant in the room. The 10 spd
ST had a tune, intercooler and exhaust so even with a garbage tune it was probably at 450-475hp.
What a great video👌💯💯💯
Explorer: Hey pretty Mustang, can I buy you dinner? Do you like Gapplebees's?
Tune, intercooler and exhaust the ST should be faster than 13.6
I agree, my best time when mine was new and bone stock was 13.6. I now run low 11s with basic bolt-ons and tune.
The owner of the ST posted above, he doesn't have a tune. Seems backwards to me as they respond to tuning so well.
@@SCTBIRD1173 True. Tuning is by far the most powerful gains per dollar on these. Plus the other bolt-ons don't really add anything since the stock tune can't make full use of the extra air flow.
Mustang GT vs Raptor R
Turned out how I thought it would. Lighter more powerful ustang won. So glad it was a manual vs auto because if not, the gap would've been bigger. haha
Another fun race as usual, Thanks for the great videos Sam!!!
Thanks
Explorer took the stang everytime from a dig 😂
Did you not watch the video? Explorer won lol
I get it this just how I feel. As a former 22 mustang gt owner (yes, manual), I'm a little embarrassed by how close this is...
Mustang has a faster 0-60 and faster quarter mile than the St does, the math is not mathing
I know I’m shocked too. I did six runs and still wasn’t able to get it to go faster could not hook at all.
The ST is tuned with an aftermarket intercooler. Helps alot
@@isaacmedina2957 an intercooler doesn't add any power though so how much more power could a tune actually give it
@@mckenzieb92 heat soak takes away power...
@@ag3nto578 yeah after multiple runs, the mustang gets hot too so that is irrelevant
wait, i skipped around in the video are these cars modded or stock?

@@S8ER personally i swapped out the stock tires p-zero nero{A/S} ,these really suck, less than 15000 miles needed replacement{even the fronts} for continentals x-treme contacts . now in 2nd gear it hooks, no hop/spin WOT with T/C off! best mod/upgrade for this generation
@@davej1212 very nice! Tires make a world of difference for sure.
I've seen vids claiming a tuned Explore ST can easily walk an SRT Trackhawk.
But seeing this real world recording, I think I was misled. The ST was heavily modified and I believe the jeep was a built 5.7 or maybe 6.4 SRT. I still admire the ST very much and Id own one !
Realized the st had a tune, they should have dyno numbers for both cars the suv would need 500whp to run this good likely
ST didn't have a tune, the owner posted above.
ST is superior. The fact that you can: drag race, off road, and tow a boat, speaks volumes. All while being able to gap 60% of cars on the road
That’s why I love my ST ,Cops vehicle in Canada
Good stuff as usual! You need to get an e50 tuned ST to race on the channel. This one wasn’t fast at all and it doesn’t look like he knows how to roll race either.
Yeah I was expecting E50 results... that would have smashed the poor Mustang though.
@@S8ER yeah it would have but god damn it that GT sounds so good. I should have a race coming up with a friends 24 GT in a week or two. I’m running ZFG e50 with all the bolt-ons minus upgraded turbos and fuel.
@@T-eee-L I can tell you that it takes a number of bolt ons for the GT to compete even from a roll (the dig is always ugly) and I’m a little slower than you are (e50 guys are turning in some crazy good numbers now). I run 11.5 @ 118 and I’m seeing quicker times and faster trap speeds from nearly all of the latest e50 tunes 🤯
@@T-eee-L ahh looks like this was a stock tune. For some reason I thought he said it was tuned in the video but owner says it's not tuned. This makes more sense now.
Haha i don't think that we have E50 here in canada and yes i didn't know how to properly roll race that car.
Love my 2022 ST added cold air intake and even better
Liar liar pants on fire. You caught yourself telling the telling the truth. It has a tune.
It ran 13 sec the 1/4 mile in this video. Those are stock numbers. My ST with only a 93oct tune is doing 11.9 sec. If there was a tune involved, the mustang would not even win the roll race 😂
I thought the same, buy why did I win the rolls?
@@SamCarLegion what tune did the St have? Was it the Ford performance tune? Zfg 93 octane is putting you in the 11's
ST has no tune, just intercooler and exhaust. But even if it had a tune, this thing is 1000lbs heavier
@@SamCarLegion aero
5.0 Mustang does a 5.0 0-60 mph. Not good but the video was still fun to watch. Time for the Mustang to go AWD.
It is supposed to go low 4s with a manual and faster with the A10. But, do run with what you got, right?
Auto does 3.5 the manual does about 4 sec 0-60
@mototodd A 100% stock mustang 5.0 auto or manual does not do either of those numbers you said.
Damn. Late model Mustang GT’s run high 13’s in the quarter? Is that accurate?
Just a tune and that ST can make 500 at the wheels. They're beasts when modified/tuned properly on Ethanol
I owned both these vehicles, back to back. 2019 Mustang GT PP1 10 speed. Followed by the 2022 Ford Explorer ST. The Mustang was amazing. The ST spectacular. The ST would easily beat the Mustang in the rain.
Nice video keep up the great work Sam
Thanks, will do!
I've not seen many Mustang pilots with the skills to get this nose heavy car off the line. They either bog the car or spin, and we all know that "spinning ain't winning".
AWD is always wild and hooks very well on take off.
IMO I’d rather auto vs Auto,That way we can see the real results of the similar 10 speed autos. But the pony still won the drags, the digs? Oof,Manual Issues
Something is not right here i know the 6mt should be able to hit 12s
You're exactly right. The Mustang shown must have a problem. The six-speed is a 12.5 car for everyone else who has tested it.
@Romacitta unprepped surface it's not.
@@davothegreat9990nah it doesn’t matter it’s not spinning or anything hes getting decent launch’s
@@tnsuperhi not really. It's called traction control.
I own a 24 GT manual and have dragged it. Without a tire, traction control is constantly cutting power or the car just spins. Cars is under-tired, especially because mine is non-pp.
My ST Edge is pretty quick stock. I just wish it had better transmission tuning. It seems confused in both normal and sport mode.
Bring on the 10 speed!
Your performance stats never make sense. Says the mustang did a 5.0 0-60 and the explorer did it slower at 5.1. You know damn well your 0-60 in the stang wasn't 5.0 seconds.
Cool race. Im surprised both cars weren't faster.
That ST hooked well off the line. I didn't expect it to win.
Believe it or not, I have been cross shopping these two vehicles (I was considering an automatic Mustang instead of a manual). I’m pretty sure I’ll go with the Explorer now that I know it fast AF. 😂
😂😂😂
….tune, COBB does a safe 500/510, 94 petro canada, afe pannel filter…, steeda diff brace…., start hurting feelings on any day, on any surface, at any light, while eating your Tim Horthon’s with the other hand…😂
You were rowing those gears! Those ST's are beasts out the hole. The 10spd will do better but it will still be traction limited so I wouldnt bother.
Strange comparison 🧐 suv vs sport, heavy weight vs light weight, Finally, results definitely for Mustang.
I love these
4:02 pensé que era alguien con una máscara pasa montañas negra 😅
Exact outcome for the mods done against the manual 👏.
That explorer is literally falling apart on the launch at 7:01 looool
Pay attention to the headlight
I freaking love you man ❤😂
Can't afford any of these new vehicles but my 2012 Volvo s60 t6 r design fastest was 13.9 in the quarter.... Wish I could afford some upgrades but I'm still satisfied.
The intercooler and tune alone help the ST a whole bunch
Now to think there are explorer sts running low 11s and high 10s in the quarter mile. Just by adding E and a tune .
Cant do math lol first said 700, then said almost 900 pounds lighter... but that's over 1000 pounds lighter.. details matter
This is so ridiculous! I love it!.
Engineered Motorsport Solutions (EMS) have some hot tunes for the Explorer and the Mustang. They're in Tenesee.
And today I saw a video of the 2025 Explorer ST courtesy of Raiti's Rides...
Kona N vs Explorer ST battle of the sleepers!!! do it!!
13sec passes surprising from both. Figured both would easily be in the 12’s especially the Mustang. They must be racing at north face altitude 👀
ST arent bad. But SQ5 and XM340i are the better suv in its class. Wish they would have done a 10speed 5.0.
ST is a 3 row suv
@@SamCarLegion true. It would be worse against audis/bmws 3 row seats suvs. But money would be an issue.
Please this explorer st vs kia stinger
Wooo
Hey Sam, Where’s the Ranger Raptor Video you talked about a couple of weeks ago? Really looking forward to the content.
Coming soon
Bring that guy on the video again he has good aura
This video makes me glad I got the auto. 😂 I have a ‘24 GT and a ‘24 ST. There is no way the ST should win. I do agree the ST should come off the line better but the auto will make short work of it in drag mode.
Auto is like 2 seconds faster off the line! Are you in Ontario Canada?
@@SamCarLegion sorry. I’m in the US in Virginia. 2 seconds makes sense. The auto is wicked.
Short shifting the heck out of that stang
AWD puts the power to the ground. The rear wheel drive, 6 speed and Sam driving were the detriment on this run. (kidding Sam). The 10-speed auto will be closer on the off the line runs by I feel the Explorer will still win. Rolling race 10-speed auto will be that much better than the 6-speed. Looking forward to the next race!!
Fear the ExST!!!!! LETS GO!!!!
