In Sonic CD US if you pay attention, the bongo is trying to fight the spotlight against the electronic noises. in the bad future, you can barely hear it because of the loud machinery and the loud metal guitar, but in the good future, you can only hear the bongo.
The past tracks being the same in both Japan and the US is actually due to a technical limitation. The Japanese composer wanted to give the past tracks an "old" and "primitive" feel, so rather than make MP3s to be put on the CD like every other track, he actually used the Sega CD's native, more primitive sound chip for the past music, which meant that it had to be coded into the game. When the US composers were replacing the soundtrack, for every non-past song, they could just replace the MP3s. But since the past music was hard-coded into the game, it would have been way too much work to replace them. (Which begs the question "Why did they replace the soundtrack in the first place", but that's besides the point.

I always wonder what that soundtrack would sound like if it had the appropriate time to cook to the composers satisfaction

There's something actually cool about Metallic Madness US. While Japan straight tell you that you're in enemy territory, US tells you "You finally made it, now finish this once for all." Still, JP one solos-

The solo is actually in every version except the us and past versions. Mania's Metalic madness act 1 is actually Metalic Madness past, so it's not in there.

Should also check out the 3D blast genesis and saturn soundtracks since thye have different songs too. Gensis is a more like 1-3K while Saturn is similar to the US CD OST where its a lot more atmospheric

There's something actually cool about Metallic Madness US. While Japan straight tell you that you're in enemy territory, US tells you "You finally made it, now finish this once for all."

In Sonic Mania Act 1 is the remix of the past version and Act 2 is the remix of the present one :D
The solo is actually in every version except the us and past versions. Mania's Metalic madness act 1 is actually Metalic Madness past, so it's not in there.

Other than the other Sonic CD songs, I'd recommend checking out NiGHTS Into Dreams, another game made by Sega and Sonic Team, with a soundtrack that has a lot of Sonic CD vibes

Should also check out the 3D blast genesis and saturn soundtracks since thye have different songs too. Gensis is a more like 1-3K while Saturn is similar to the US CD OST where its a lot more atmospheric
Im gonna say the saturn version on the first 3-4 levels are jp but the rest is kinda us

I think JP bad future sounding slower complements the visuals, with everything rusted and broken down. Also the laughs are Eggman’s. He sounds like a opera singer.

I grew up with the US version and I never liked this zone because of the music. But I have liked the level after hearing the JP version and have been happy to play the zone ever since.

there reason why you see remasterd on the past music and why there is only one past track is because the past music is because unlike the othertracks that were recorded and then the files where but in the game the past version was made like the old gensise game so the sound was made by the chip itself
so when they wanted to do a past theme in the usa they couldn't because it ment that they had to code it from scratch now bye also palm tree panic is the first zone ok bye now because i have my finals this saturday
