2:54 "In the infinite meadows of heaven blossom the lovely stars." Nice to know the guy who was always trying to wring Smith's neck can quote Longfellow!
Of the 4 crash landing Dr. Smith was responsible for 3 of those. 1st with sabotaging the retro rockets in "Island In The Sky" Next, shorting out the power cells in "Forbidden World" Then trying to charge course for Earth in "Hunters Moon" throwing the J-2 into a downward spiral rate of descent towards the planet. Had he not been so impatient and allowed the Robot to complete the check list on the Space Pod with Will and took matters in his own hands, the Pod would not have accidentally deployed from the J-2. And the crash landing of the ship avoided.
Holy Retros! This is a brilliant insight into Don's crazy piloting. Love it. I can imagine videos on Judy's lack of doing anything in a crisis, Will's crazy trusting nature, John's lectures, the robot's emotional issues, Penny's weepy issues and Dr. Smith always getting caught...
It wasn't the Spacecraft . That was the " Chariot " with the " Leavers " . Also ..... This is what you get for the low bid for employment opportunities
The chariot was an awesome vehicle. The controls are pretty much what I'd expect on a rough and tumble terrestrial crawler. The only aspect that made me wonder was it's ability to become a sea worthy marine vehicle and not capsize even when taking on enormous amounts of water.
@@Nathan-jq1uw The Real " Chariot " was built using a " Snow Cat " from a Ski Resort . So it was a Real Vichical . There's a video of the owner of the " Chariot " on YT but he and his crew rebuilt it . And scene we're it's floating on water that's a model and nothing more
No way a spaceship could endure that many crashes. In the first episode, those asteroids hitting the ship would have destroyed it. The force of impact of two opposing objects, as with car accidents, been pulverized. Even the ships windows stood up to asteroid impacts! Of course, back then I was young and unknowledgeable of such things. Fun show for kids, rediculose for factual incidents.
Humanity has been flying for over a hundred years now, and there has been no case where an aircraft or spacecraft has crash-landed and been successfully patched up & flown back to civilization without outside assistance.
You are not thinking outside the box - The hull of the ship (including the windows) had a force field as well - In the first few episodes this forcefield had a glow to it that surrounded the ship but the effect was costly so they did away with the glow.
He's got difficult material here. Jupiter isn't really a nimble ship. And something's always broken. It reminds me of the Red November game... At least he's maestro of the belly landing.
If Major Don West was known for being Crash West from the Crash Landings on the Jupiter Two; Commander Deanna Troi at the Helm on the Crash Landing of the Saucer Section of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701D on Veridian 3 in Star Trek Generations and USS Enterprise NCC-1701E ramming The Reman Warbird Scimitar in Star Trek Nemesis would have made him say to her Welcome to the club.

Fun show sometimes but really the only really good writer of the series walked away after six episodes that being s.bar david (aka shimon wincelberg) who saw the writing on the wall and later on wrote two episodes of star trek (galeilo seven and dagger of the mind, two pretty solid episodes.).
Don " Crash" West, Seat of the pants flying . Going into space?, take me along to do your flying. I'll guarantee a perfect crash landing., no one hurt, or your money back. And if things can go wrong, just blame it all on Dr. Smith. Don West, space ship pilot. I do space ship repairs too, absolutely guaranteed .
Don was always the one to get hurt, too!
Don was a scrappy guy!
Rest in peace, Mr. Mark Goddard. And thanks for all the wonderful, childhood memories!
All I know is, he was always the best scenery on the show. 😀
Guy Williams thought so too
Don sure was great scenery.
Met Mark Goddard at a convention - nothing but good things to say about him. He was a great guy to talk to and hella funny

We need a miracle "

Don's crazy piloting saved them every time though because it was usually Dr. Smith's fault for the ship's malfunctioning
Aww, my special friend Mark Goddard!
But i wish you didn't use that goofy background music from season 2.
I agree! It's actually edge of your seat exciting!
I love how Don is the pilot but John Robinson does all the piloting lol

'Crash West' is hardly a fair term to call a Pilot..as most crashes were caused by Dr. Smith....

Wow,,, the controls on the spacecraft,,, are the same as that of a bulldozer, 🐓
I always thought those controls were a bad design. No control stick or yoke. Don having to lean forward under high G forces to flip toggle switches.

Why do no space ships have seatbelts! Only one movie of even Star Trek used seat belts!
