    Back then, we only had 3 stations. I was 10 years young and tuned to the first episode by chance. It was a Wednesday evening at 7:30, and immediately I was hooked on the show. I was familiar with June Lockhart from Lassie, and I've always loved science fiction. The music for the show was unique and added character to it. The robot and the Jupiter 2 were so cool. If only they carried over the 1st season to the others. I liked it better as a serious program.

      With all respect, I must disagree.
      “Playing it straight” Irwin Allen Style would have made this show no more memorable or lasting than his other shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Time Tunnel or Land of the Giants. All OK to So-So shows, but none nearly as memorable and syndicated as LIS.
      SMITH & ROBOT 4 EVER!

I'm definitely not around the same age as the rest of the people in the comments section I'm only in my 20s, but my aunt gave me some bootleg copies of every episode of this show and I was obsessed with it, I'd watch it almost every night lol. I was a wide-eyed 12 year old back in 1965, watching this on our 15 inch BW tv. I still remember the fall promos for this new series Lost in Space, with the shots of the Jupiter II swooping over the alien planet. And as a nerdy science geek kid who was shunned by the "in" crowd at school, I was hooked on this show and eagerly watched the first episode. The wonderment, the mystery, the eeriness of that first season had me believing these people were truly on an alien planet.
    The first season was truly the best. The third season had a few episodes that were good, in that they were in the spirit of the first season.

      I started watching it as a teenager in re-runs, in 1978. On a color tv, in my maternal grandparents' kitchen. The door to their living room looked like the doors in the "state rooms" The light in the kitchen somewhat resembled the "bubble" of the Robot B9's head.

    Thank you for refreshing my nearly 55 year old childhood memories of this. I've had people say over the years Smith didn't kill a guy to get aboard but I'm pretty sure he did, plus he was trying to kill crew anyway. I can't believe my memory of him just tossing the body down some convenient nearby rubbish chute into a regular trash bin was accurate. It is completely ridiculous that the Jupiter II was designed that way. Doesn't change the fact I wanted to be Will Robinson when I was a kid.

      One of Harris's best scenes is in "The Time Merchant", where he has a chance to stay on Earth in 1997 but learns (via a message relayed from the Merchant) that the LACK of his extra weight aboard the J II will cause the ship to be destroyed in an uncharted asteroid belt before the family comes out of hypersleep. "Penny, Judy...my dear William", he laments, "No I can't do it!" -- and he and the Robot plot to sneak aboard the ship to prevent the tragedy.

      The first season was amazing. Unfortunately, Irwin Allen didn't care much for science fiction or for good story-writing. If something got him good ratings, that's all that mattered to him. "Lost in Space" was competing with the "Batman" TV show at the time, and when Irwin saw how successful it was, he changed the direction of "Lost in Space" to try to compete with it. He dumbed the show WAY down in seasons 2-3, and we got Space Pirates, Space Hippies, Space Banditos, Space Miner 49ers, etc.

    Actually it wasn't that Jonathan Harris hated playing an evil character. He was known for playing bad guys. He just realized that playing evil on this show was going to be a short stint and he was looking for a steady paycheck. He knew it would only be a matter of time before John Robinson shoved him out of an airlock - so he talked Irwin Allen into morphing into a bumbling fool.

    • @GlamRockCowboy
      @GlamRockCowboy 5 років тому +3

      It wasn't only that. By that time, Fox and CBS were putting heavy pressure on Irwin Allen to cut back on the violence and lighten up the initially dark tone of the series. Mr. Harris undoubtedly knew of this, and simply fell in with them, as it were. It should also be remembered that, by that time, there was a widespread call by the FCC and other groups to tone down television violence, which had reached its peak with "The Untouchables" only a few years earlier. Such cartoon series as "Space Ghost" and "The Herculoids," now considered classics of the period, were also cancelled for the same reason. Subsequent attempts to revive these series proved to be miserable failures, as they "dumbed down" the original characters to the point that viewers in general found them disappointing.

      I read that unlike Gene Roddenberry, Irwin Allen didn't care about his shows after he sold them; only that they made money. He would put everything into the pilot in order to sell it, but once sold, he would do anything to keep the money coming in and that's why he let Jonathan Harris's character take over, because it brought in ratings and money. Greed has no taste, unfortunately.

    The B-9 Robot was designed by the same creator that built Robby The Robot back in the 1950's. Robby the Robot made two guest appearances on Lost in Space "War of the Robots' great episode. The B-9 Robot was voiced by the shows' announcer Dick Tufeld and the Robot suit was operated from inside by stunt actor Bob May. These two men literally brought the Robot to life for us kids. Irwin Allen did not want it known who operated the Robot suit until after he died. Bob May never got credit during the show for operating the Robot suit.

    I always wondered if the original Smith character had killed the guard in this scene. But, he takes the time to toss him out in the trash rather than incinerate him in the reactor. This lead me to believe that he was still alive and Smith didn't really want to kill him in the first place. This was suppose to be a family show and they were already pushing the villain envelope by have someone trying to kill a family in the first place. Why make Smith more evil by killing someone in the first fifteen minutes. But, in short I agree with you. I liked Smith better in the first 16 episodes. A nice balance of "comedic villainy".

      According to the Alpha Control Reference Manual, the guard named Ssgt Joseph McWilliams was found dead from a broken neck. Not sure if it is considered canon, but according to this book Dr. Smith did in fact kill the guard.

    • @mitchellmelkin4078
      @mitchellmelkin4078 6 років тому +2

      As a matter of curiosity, Smith's blow looked pretty authentic and effective to me. To someone knowledgeable about such things, as depicted, would that have likely resulted in inflicting a broken neck? In any event, isn't it likely that the dumpster and its contents, if not vaporized in the launch, wouldn't at least, have been irredeemably irradiated, and have to be remotely disposed of, afterwards, validating Smith's decision to dispose of the body, by that means?
      While not surprising such a detail might not be illustrated, where exactly, is the dumpster? As one would be led to think, from the scene, it would appear to be directly below the Jupiter. However, the establishing shot of the launch platform, clearly shows that's not the case. There is a walkway, some distance underneath the ship, but there doesn't appear an object situaited on it, though from the perspective of that defining view, it MIGHT just be hard to discern. ???

      I had always thought he killed the guard. The look on his face and the pause when he feels for a pulse indicates that the guard is dead and Smith has really stepped in it. What has always puzzled me though is WHERE did the guard come from? He seems to have been luring in the shadows the entire time that Smith is re-programming the robot. When he appears, he is no where near the ladder or the elevator.
