To be honest, I kinda love when a (female) character's ahoge flicks around in response to their emotional state. You know, how it sometimes sways back and forth when the character is entranced by something, or stands straight up when they're scared, or flips into a heart shape when they're especially happy.
The mom braid is a death sentence to a lot of characters.... If a character has that hairstyle, chances are they will not survive the next few episodes. :'(

I have another example of a dramatic hair chop, although many dont consider it an anime: In Avatar: The Last Airbender, after Zuko accepts that he is no longer royalty in the fire nation and, instead, an outcast, he cuts off his ponytail, letting it float down the river with his royal fire nation hair thingy (well that was a sudden change in tone for my comment. Sorry, I don't know the technical term.).
Only big note that surprisingly wasn't mentioned is that long hair for Shonen protagonist is often used to represent newfound strength in an epic tale fashion. In epic tales, there's the point of "death" and then "revival" for the hero, which is often used in anime accompanied with long hair. Popular Examples: The Super Saiyan transformation (especially Ssj 3) Gon's life or death nen condition when facing Neferpitou And Ichigo becoming a Vasto Lorde level Vaizard after being killed by Ulquiorra
The thing about long hair is interesting, in many transformations the character's hair grows a lot, this is specially true in Ushio to to Tora, Yu yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter and Bleach. In those series those transformations aren't particularly heroic, they're rather dark and scary

lucky! I plan to get one when I'm older. My hair is naturally curly, if I apply conditioner in the bath I come out looking like I just got my curls done at the salon. I wanna cut them short like a boy, a layered cut so I can have cute poofy curls, then I wanna cut an ahoge at the top that sticks out. Also I want 7 thick blue streaks scattrered throuought my hair. Sorry for this rant
