I was scrolling through Pinterest and then saw a few memes of Naruto loving Sasuke that’s why he was trying to save him and I was like “wow, so true” then got recommended a LOT more memes, then fan art, then I search it up, found more fan art, read comics of them on missions....etc. Next thing I knew I shipped them and saw male couples has just another ship possibility

Yeah. I'm also a Spanish speaker and sometimes I struggle when talking about anime with my English speaking friends... Mostly because the Latin version resembles more the Japanese pronunciation (and I only watch anime in Japanese), so to push it further away from Japanese so it sounds closer to the English phonetical adaptation of the name is weird...

@@isnotmimi From people who use it in a derogatory manner. Like she said in the video, the word originates from within a community and was then used as an insult by outsiders. People choosing to use the word in a positive way counts as reclaiming it. Same could be said for otaku actually.
I'd say some introspection is due for both sides, the fan that "takes it too far" to be aware their impact on others and those who feel the need to "police" behavior to question the roots of their discomfort.

I’m tired of looking at what yuri is always viewed from qeer woman’s pov and the male yuri fans’s pov, but BL is exclusively portrayed as a homoerotic fanservice with hot handsome boys for yaoi fangirls. Similarly, you will be killed if you say that yuri is intended to be a hot fetish for heterosexual men, but for some reason it is perfectly normal to say that yaoi is created solely to satisfy the desire of heterosexual girls.
Absolutely! I spent so long with the 'problematic' early BL works she talked about in this video because I just could not find anything more plot-heavy or real-life accurate. I'd love to see a video on bara just to hear about more titles I should look into.
@@86fifty i think because of the content there's very little bara anime or even longer manga.. they're like hustler magazine to the "i read it for the articles" playboy magazines of the day. But you can google "my reading manga bara" and that should bring you to a particular place to do some particular reading..

it’s tough to find yaoi that isn’t blatant fetishazion made for a straight audience, but if you dig you can find lots that are great. its almost the same way with yuri.
as a fellow lesbian i recommend you watch "Bloom Into You" and "Doukuyuusei", my favorite bl and gl works!

I'm so glad you guys covered this! Yaoi had been a huge part of my discovering I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, in many good and bad ways. I went from worshipping yaoi as a 'straight girl' to appreciating yaoi, but also understanding it's toxic elements and often poor representation as a nonbinary gay viewer. I might not have looked more closely at my own sexuality or at the nature of queer representation, the pushback I get for these interests, or how gender roles and sexuality are treated by different cultures if I hadn't read my first inuyasha/koga doujinshi when I was barely a preteen. If I'd not encountered yaoi, slash, Yuri, or any form of same sex fandom, I probably wouldn't know enough now to look back and see how far we've come and how far we have yet to go. Yaoi and Yuri really started my path of critical thinking, questioning gender norms and homophobia, despite the stigma held for yaoi fans(which is definitely motivated by sexism and homophobia, proof being that you see the same disregard and disgust pointed at fan girls in the west who ship guys with guys)
I definitely look forward to seeing you cover Yuri and maybe you could get a few LGBT fans perspective on animes handling of LGBT characters? There's a ton to unpack with just Yuri on Ice, Sailor Moon, and even in My Hero Academy. Anime has definitely had an impact on a generation of queer people, both in content and at conventions/fan spaces.

One of the huge reasons I have a bunch on internalized homophobia, is because of how fujos treated me online when I was younger. When they try to label you the top or bottom, it can really make you uncomfy

Answering the Robot: Gravitation was definitely the series that got me to go down the rabbit hole! From CLAMP, the Fushigi Yugi characters Chichiro and Tasuki (the dynamic duo) was often paired in very rare doujinshi and difficult to find (at the dawn of the internet age)- fanfiction. So its interesting to see how far this gendra has come since the 90s!
Gravitation will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first actual yaoi anime i ever watched (i watched it on youtube lol) cause up until then all id seen was fanfiction doujinshis and fanart so to see a canon gay relationship was very refreshing

Hey, I'm a librarian and former English professor, and I just need to let you know how incredible this channel is. I'm perennially thinking about getting back into anime, and the exhaustiveness, thoughtfulness, and sheer optimism of this channel are such great encouragement. I'm sure this is all a ton of work and frustration to put together, especially with YoyTube's dumb demonetization policies, but I really think you all make some of the best pop culture content out there, and I'm really grateful for it. I really hope you do a video on yuri/shoujo-ai! I love BL/yaoi/shonen-ai, but I'm more into yuri/shoujo-ai! I wish there was more of a presence of the girl x girl dynamic in anime, and the anime community. I love boy x boy content, but my heart gravitates more towards the girl x girl content. I remember my first girlfriend on 2nd of high school. Her way to approach me was teaching me about anime, its categories and showing me some excellent work I didn't know it existed. Her first gift when we were just friends was a very detailed and cool yuri drawing. She also taught me about yaoi and we even read Megamix Gravitation (read it at your on risk, it's kinda hard yaoi) and other yaoi together . For me, it was always about learning what she liked and how she liked it, it was so interesting to know about how she was turned on with yaoi and what art and plot elements she liked or disliked, even when I don't like men in a romantic or sexual way.
I really recommend investing a little bit in things that are close to the things you like but are not necessarily attractive to you in the first place. In this case, knowing about shōnen-ai and yaoi has been great, I've been able to make conversation with more people in the anime/manga/otaku community and sometimes even get to know great friends!

I’m Christian...I just hope my parents don’t know I enjoy a good Yaoi manga/anime...But it’s real good...and I can’t stop...and I may or may not fan girl imagining some of my favorite characters together...this is all hypothetical btw..😏😂
