I love the personal storytelling in this video! I think the nature of Deltarune’s release makes it especially susceptible to analysis that misses the forest for the trees. There are so many moving parts, so much technical and artistic work that goes into creating a video game, but as I think you demonstrate in this video, what makes an experience with a game profound depends entirely on who is playing it. It’s really refreshing to see a more intimate conversation not about what Deltarune may or may not be trying to do, but what it has already done
I'm genuinely so honored to see the kind of reception this video's been getting. I thought it would reach like, 100, 200 people maximum based off of my usual performance and everyone has been so thoughtful with their comments. Deltarune has been a very unique game in terms of how we as a community have been able to experience it and I think that it has absolutely affected the actual way that people decide to talk about it online
When I first got into writing in high school, my teacher told me that I was going down the wrong path. That I needed to go to college to become an author, even though independent publishing existed. When I published my first novel, I expected my Grandma to say,” writing is stupid and a complete waste of your time. You need to find a true job.” Instead she was completely speechless and couldn’t find anything negative to stay like she’s use to.
I'm going to be thinking about this essay for a while. You're among a very limited selection of people who are talking about art in this way; a way thats a breath of fresh air. This lack of discussion of feelings (in the community as a whole) feels reminiscent of how - in film and book discussions that Ive been apart of - often people will straight up ignore the metephors and meaning of a piece of media to instead talk about its story *extremely* literally. It almost feels like anti intellectualism at times, like they're trying to scrub away difficult messages. Granted, in those cases, they were explicitly devaluing metephorical and feelings driven discussion, viewing them as lesser. I used to be there, and I hadn't fully left that mindset until this essay, I feel, so thank you.
Just wait until Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 comes out and I talk about how Satoru Gojo got me out of an emotional tailspin from the simple act of a character Caring about people because it was the Right Thing to Do- My partner and I love to play OCs with our favorite stories and I take that VERY seriously every time. It's always been one of my favorite things in media to break it down to its very core but to tear canon apart, you first have to understand what put everything together in the first place. In the case of the UTDR fandom, it's why I feel like AUs like Underfell and Dusttale worked and STILL work emotionally, but revivals of Underswap always end up feeling off to me. You can't break a character down to their essentials if you don't understand who they were in the source material to begin with hahaha I'm happy that this essay was able to reach you!!! Let's try to sit and Understand our blorbos a little bit better. Rotate them in your mind. It's fun

There's just, so much in that comment I find interesting, but I'm just really happy to hear that characters caring about people and doing the right thing gets to you as well! It honestly affects me to a rediculous degree sometimes. If you don't mind me asking, what method do you use to play OCs? I used to RP with a group of friends over discord, using different channels as different places in the world. Before that me and my brother would use a trampoline as our metaphor for unreal spaces. Now I find that, outside the context of a game with rules like dnd, I can't get people (or myself) to engage much with pretend and story warping anymore.
I like to use Discord as a dumping space for a lot of my ideas. There is also a much longer but far more fun method I'll employ on very special occasions called "It's my birthday so I'm going to have all my friends sit down and listen to a powerpoint presentation I made purely about my OC worldbuilding". Late night infodumping vcs are also a must for me. Sit down and listen to me be very Normal about my blorbos right this instant (please) I also have a discord server specifically set up for my UA-cam channel, which, now that I'm writing this, I remember I'd forgotten to plug in my Description section. Let me fix that

If you don't start the game from Chp 1, Kris will play that chapter FOR you. And the story is the same. Therefore, the characters DO like Kris and they WILL listen to them.

Kris notably makes a beeline for their home without talking to anyone, but during the Dark World sections they’ll make some interesting choices, like going out of their way to pick up the pink ribbon. They’ll also choose every default option in the goner maker except one- in “give your vessel a gift”, they choose Mind

He's an opera singer who listens to video game music and talks about how the music makes him feel (usually without any context for where it plays in the game) and theres just something very like... i dunno. pure about it? like. He doesn't break down the music theory or the techniques. He's just like "man, this song makes me feel like im fighting for my life" and thats all it needs to be. Basically hes become my new favourite source for great music. Thank you for making this video. I hope this kind of discussion becomes more commonplace among fandoms. Also "seemingly infinitismal and invisible rules that no one ever bothered to explain to me until after i had already broken them" is the most relatable quote ive heard in a while!

I loved this video, you really hit home on how Deltarune and escapism are so well mixed together it makes for a great story. I wish you got more recognition for these videos, as they are really fun to watch! (ps. you talking about hyperfixiations earlier in the video made me realize I may have autism too, never was officially diagnosed)
It’s one of my favorite aspects of the entire game and I really do wish people would delve more into it! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, I’m trying to creep back into making more like these Hyperfixations are actually something that people with ADHD have as well! It’s only the term special interests that are set aside specifically for people with autism- if you’d like to learn more about it I’d recommend watching some of Toon Ruins’ videos about it

What a lovely video!! I can't believe I never realized that the dark worlds were the concept of escapism through games and fiction! Even the order they're in makes so much more sense now, going from boardgames to the internet to TV...the time and investment you put into the form of escapism goes up everytime which is why the chapters are longer!! (At least in my experience lol. TV makes you suddenly realize you've been sitting watching a show for 6 hours) Deltarune and Undertale are both my special interests (my ADHD brain has some crossover with you I think!) but you've helped me realize why I like the game of Deltarune more, despite my love of the og Undertale characters. The celebration of escapism with friends really speaks to me!

this video is awesome. i LOVE looking for metaphors and non-literal meaning in stories (no matter how wild it may get...), starting with some minor characters and ending with... vaguely even related to the story things but nonetheless kinda connected with it (for example one time i finished ultrakill and then i've somehow almost read the entire old testament because the game is about hell and stuff lol) when i REALLY LIKE something, i NEED to know every single scratch of it until the fuel of my engagement with it still holds on, because a good story can change people's lives ... and that's exactly what happened with DELTARUNE for me in the last couple of months. i had some tough times in the last couple of years, and starting from 2021 due to one of the terrible events which was the second toughest one i wasn't even able to connect with people on the internet. some things changed a couple of months ago, and i lost contact with one of the last most endeared people for me. thanks god by that time ive finally gotten into DR literally a couple of weeks prior to that, and with the aforementioned push from the life i've finally found the courage to leave the isolation i've been in for so many years, so i've found some wonderful smaller communities within the game's fandom and even found some people to talk to. (and even started to create art !!!!) i don't know how my state would have been now without DELTARUNE, honestly. this game and the fandom mean so much to me and i'm glad that so many people share similar feelings about it with me because the game made some very great changes in their lives!!! :3 also, changing topics, i find your analogy of hyperfixations and special interests to be indeed very accurate !!! being neurodivergent too, this kinda sums up the things i've experienced with various media n stuff ... so in conclusion... if anyone has read this Rambling Limited Edition™ so far, thanks for learning about my journey with the game, i think haha?? i also want to add that whatever tough times anyone reading this might be coming through at this very moment, and if god forbid you've found yourself alone, don't be afraid to reach to people! to anybody, anywhere. this may even save your life. stay strong and determined !!!!

omg i loved this video so much. its so nice seeing people talk about media in a way that means something to them. Im stuck writing an essay on outer wilds for my class and the whole time i was literally explaining every aspect of the game and this video helped me realize that i dont have to do that. The essay doesnt have to be wikipedia style facts but it can be about what the game means to me. I love the toby fox games and would absolutely do the presentation about it if there wasnt a chance of getting bullied so i chose the safer option. Anyways thank you so much for making this video i loved it. Videos like these make me less ashamed of my hyperfixations that make me the person i am today. I GUARANTEE you that as someone who had to write AND READ so many of those essays, it will be much more enjoyable for you and memorable for your readers/ audience if you can find a way to make your emotions into a talking point. If we're gonna get all emotional and stuff about Deltarune then I guess I should share the experience that stuck with me the most while playing it. I ended up having something like a panic attack/paranoid episode while I was playing in the earliest parts of chapter 2, in the cyber field, and I managed to calm down after Suzie and Ralsei suddenly came back to where I was, later on after fighting Spamton I saw that Kris went exactly through the same experience as me and also was comforted by Suzie and Ralsei, man, I haven't related to a character that much in a while
The bit where no matter what option you have Kris say they’ll end up very much NOT being okay in that moment is like. Okay. Owie. I’m going to save and take a break I think actually
my favorite part of mollystar's device theory, more than any of the metatextual analysis and recaps, no matter how intensly facinating that is, is the thousands of injokes from the subsections of the community she hangs out in, explaining their connection to the series, and revelling in the retro, lofi atmosphere that brings up memories of being young and dumb on a small town near nature, and getting connected online. these games really seem to fucking hit queer and nd people hard huh. i know they hit me at least.
Deltarune is a battle between, Light and Dark, Hopes and Dreams, Reality and Fiction, and Determinism and Escapism. And, if it wasn’t clear by the way I listed them out, those are ALL the same concept. Determination is represented by the “light inside your soul” that gives you power and contains “the fate of the world”. Save points are noted to be “the light only you can see”, and the heroes of the legend appear “shining with hope”. As for darkness, dark worlds are representative of fiction, fantasy, and dreams. The shadows start to grow, causing “the places that you know [to] seem like fantasy”, when you quit the game after dying, the “world is covered with darkness”, etc. “Delta Rune” can literally be translated to “change in what is carved in stone”, or “change the unchangeable”, so when Gaster says “SHOW YOURSELF! DELTA RUNE”, for us to immediately become connected to their world, it’s because he was inviting our power, our light, to help change the dark fate that is destined to befall them. We, with the power of determinism, have the power to prevent the end of their story as it was meant to happen. We treat their world as an escape, but they are using us to save it.
As someone who's 20 Sessions into their online, text-based RP Heavy D&D Game on Discord, this hits hard. @@askerror1987 Our main goal is to stop Iggwilv, the Witch Queen in the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Sounds easy, but it's difficult to track down in a world as big as The Forgotten Realms with so many Outer Planes and Inner Planes to explore. My Character is Sokudo Kisuhara. A Neutral Good Hashalaq Quori Shrine Maiden who's a Pacifist that wants to help everyone instead of hinder them thanks to being born on Arcadia. Mechanically, being a Shrine Maiden is represented by being a Paladin. Though Sokudo broke her Oath of Redemption and has become an Oathbreaker, so she's trying to redeem herself at the moment. We've visited several Planes so far such as Mechanus, the Shadowfell, the Elemental Plane of Water and even the Positive Energy Plane which is impossible to reach for an Adventurer under most conditions. Sokudo is the information gatherer of the group since she doesn't like fighting and has a ton of tools that can make sense of the world such as a Feat she picked up that can have her learn the history of an object or having a compass to detect where the nearest Feywild Portal is in the Material Plane or the Underdark.

Ohhh, that sounds fun! Anything with an Oathbreaker always ends up being an interesting story imo. I haven’t been able to keep up with DND much but I did enjoy the few oneshots I was able to participate in!
I've had an uncanny relationship with Deltarune. While I do have a unhealth obsession with theories, I more referring to what I experienced while playing. Specifically with Kris. I noticed a lot of odd similarities between them and me. From minor things like not being all that talkative, and few other things that are a bit personal I don't want to say. To oddly specific things, like how we both apparently use apple scented shampoo, and playing the piano (and possibly only being able to play when we're the only ones in the room, if that's what that one Noelle post was implying) and even eating moss (granted I was in pre-school) to even certain reactions kris gives if you pay attention to how others describe their face or tone. Honestly, Deltarune has me trapped, and the irony of it is that I can't escape its allure of escapism. I usually get super enveloped in stories, dreaming what ifs, what it be like if I was there. and it only gets worse if the game allows the "player" themself to be apart instead of just through another character.
It’s got a very interesting dichotomy, doesn’t it? Kris is such a cool character to me exactly for this reason and it makes me frustrated when people can’t do something as simple as respecting their gender. Like, way to completely miss the point of their character guys, hit the showers

And our similarities. like my reaction to the piano, and the fact that Kris also uses the same scented shampoo I use, I was like "huh, that's an odd coincidence"

Mostly i like the story of deltarune more. Idk my obsession with making stories started when I had a whole junk of legos . I used to make characters off of it and just make a story and voice Them . One time we make a whole movie that dragged on for hours with Legos with my cousin and my older brother .
Yep, I ended up making my own font just for music sourcing! One of the comments on my most popular video told me they wished I'd been as diligent about crediting the tracks I'd used as I was about the b-roll footage, and it stuck with me enough that this will be my policy going forward. It did make me giggle a little to see a comment asking about it, though

Even the order they're in makes so much more sense now, going from boardgames to the internet to TV...the time and investment you put into the form of escapism goes up everytime which is why the chapters are longer!! (At least in my experience lol. TV makes you suddenly realize you've been sitting watching a show for 6 hours)
Deltarune and Undertale are both my special interests (my ADHD brain has some crossover with you I think!) but you've helped me realize why I like the game of Deltarune more, despite my love of the og Undertale characters. The celebration of escapism with friends really speaks to me!

@@Maguino_ Oh, if Deltarune is built for anything, it’s definitely nostalgia. I think that’s a big emotion that the Hometown section has been able to harness these past few chapters thanks to it’s connected-yet-not-connection with Undertale
this video is awesome.
i LOVE looking for metaphors and non-literal meaning in stories (no matter how wild it may get...), starting with some minor characters and ending with... vaguely even related to the story things but nonetheless kinda connected with it (for example one time i finished ultrakill and then i've somehow almost read the entire old testament because the game is about hell and stuff lol)
when i REALLY LIKE something, i NEED to know every single scratch of it until the fuel of my engagement with it still holds on, because a good story can change people's lives ...
and that's exactly what happened with DELTARUNE for me in the last couple of months. i had some tough times in the last couple of years, and starting from 2021 due to one of the terrible events which was the second toughest one i wasn't even able to connect with people on the internet.
some things changed a couple of months ago, and i lost contact with one of the last most endeared people for me.
thanks god by that time ive finally gotten into DR literally a couple of weeks prior to that, and with the aforementioned push from the life i've finally found the courage to leave the isolation i've been in for so many years, so i've found some wonderful smaller communities within the game's fandom and even found some people to talk to. (and even started to create art !!!!)
i don't know how my state would have been now without DELTARUNE, honestly. this game and the fandom mean so much to me and i'm glad that so many people share similar feelings about it with me because the game made some very great changes in their lives!!! :3
also, changing topics, i find your analogy of hyperfixations and special interests to be indeed very accurate !!! being neurodivergent too, this kinda sums up the things i've experienced with various media n stuff ...
so in conclusion...

omg i loved this video so much. its so nice seeing people talk about media in a way that means something to them.
Im stuck writing an essay on outer wilds for my class and the whole time i was literally explaining every aspect of the game and this video helped me realize that i dont have to do that. The essay doesnt have to be wikipedia style facts but it can be about what the game means to me.
I love the toby fox games and would absolutely do the presentation about it if there wasnt a chance of getting bullied so i chose the safer option.
Anyways thank you so much for making this video i loved it. Videos like these make me less ashamed of my hyperfixations that make me the person i am today. Hope you have the greatest christmas if u celebrate and thanks again.
I GUARANTEE you that as someone who had to write AND READ so many of those essays, it will be much more enjoyable for you and memorable for your readers/ audience if you can find a way to make your emotions into a talking point. Being able to explain *why* you feel a certain way about something is a very great skill to have and it's never too early to start!!! Good luck on your essay!!!!!!!! If we're gonna get all emotional and stuff about Deltarune then I guess I should share the experience that stuck with me the most while playing it.
I ended up having something like a panic attack/paranoid episode while I was playing in the earliest parts of chapter 2, in the cyber field, and I managed to calm down after Suzie and Ralsei suddenly came back to where I was, later on after fighting Spamton I saw that Kris went exactly through the same experience as me and also was comforted by Suzie and Ralsei, man, I haven't related to a character that much in a while
The bit where no matter what option you have Kris say they’ll end up very much NOT being okay in that moment is like. Okay. Owie. I’m going to save and take a break I think actually

my favorite part of mollystar's device theory, more than any of the metatextual analysis and recaps, no matter how intensly facinating that is, is the thousands of injokes from the subsections of the community she hangs out in, explaining their connection to the series, and revelling in the retro, lofi atmosphere that brings up memories of being young and dumb on a small town near nature, and getting connected online. these games really seem to fucking hit queer and nd people hard huh. i know they hit me at least.

Deltarune is a battle between, Light and Dark, Hopes and Dreams, Reality and Fiction, and Determinism and Escapism. And, if it wasn’t clear by the way I listed them out, those are ALL the same concept.
Determination is represented by the “light inside your soul” that gives you power and contains “the fate of the world”. Save points are noted to be “the light only you can see”, and the heroes of the legend appear “shining with hope”.
As for darkness, dark worlds are representative of fiction, fantasy, and dreams. The shadows start to grow, causing “the places that you know [to] seem like fantasy”, when you quit the game after dying, the “world is covered with darkness”, etc.
“Delta Rune” can literally be translated to “change in what is carved in stone”, or “change the unchangeable”, so when Gaster says “SHOW YOURSELF! DELTA RUNE”, for us to immediately become connected to their world, it’s because he was inviting our power, our light, to help change the dark fate that is destined to befall them. We, with the power of determinism, have the power to prevent the end of their story as it was meant to happen. We treat their world as an escape, but they are using us to save it.

@@askerror1987 Our main goal is to stop Iggwilv, the Witch Queen in the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Sounds easy, but it's difficult to track down in a world as big as The Forgotten Realms with so many Outer Planes and Inner Planes to explore.
My Character is Sokudo Kisuhara. A Neutral Good Hashalaq Quori Shrine Maiden who's a Pacifist that wants to help everyone instead of hinder them thanks to being born on Arcadia. Mechanically, being a Shrine Maiden is represented by being a Paladin. Though Sokudo broke her Oath of Redemption and has become an Oathbreaker, so she's trying to redeem herself at the moment.
We've visited several Planes so far such as Mechanus, the Shadowfell, the Elemental Plane of Water and even the Positive Energy Plane which is impossible to reach for an Adventurer under most conditions.
Sokudo is the information gatherer of the group since she doesn't like fighting and has a ton of tools that can make sense of the world such as a Feat she picked up that can have her learn the history of an object or having a compass to detect where the nearest Feywild Portal is in the Material Plane or the Underdark.

Ohhh, that sounds fun! Anything with an Oathbreaker always ends up being an interesting story imo. I haven’t been able to keep up with DND much but I did enjoy the few oneshots I was able to participate in!

I've had an uncanny relationship with Deltarune. While I do have a unhealth obsession with theories, I more referring to what I experienced while playing.
Specifically with Kris. I noticed a lot of odd similarities between them and me. From minor things like not being all that talkative, and few other things that are a bit personal I don't want to say. To oddly specific things, like how we both apparently use apple scented shampoo, and playing the piano (and possibly only being able to play when we're the only ones in the room, if that's what that one Noelle post was implying) and even eating moss (granted I was in pre-school) to even certain reactions kris gives if you pay attention to how others describe their face or tone.
Honestly, Deltarune has me trapped, and the irony of it is that I can't escape its allure of escapism. I usually get super enveloped in stories, dreaming what ifs, what it be like if I was there. and it only gets worse if the game allows the "player" themself to be apart instead of just through another character.
It’s got a very interesting dichotomy, doesn’t it? Kris is such a cool character to me exactly for this reason and it makes me frustrated when people can’t do something as simple as respecting their gender. Like, way to completely miss the point of their character guys, hit the showers

@askerror1987 the theory of kris being controlled by the player and how mgs2 also had that theme with raiden throwing away the dog tags with the players name on it. Raiden said he was his own person and not a pawn of the player. Hopefully kris will achieve that because from the little we get to know about them makes me care about kris as their own person.

Mostly i like the story of deltarune more. Idk my obsession with making stories started when I had a whole junk of legos . I used to make characters off of it and just make a story and voice Them . One time we make a whole movie that dragged on for hours with Legos with my cousin and my older brother .

Yep, I ended up making my own font just for music sourcing! One of the comments on my most popular video told me they wished I'd been as diligent about crediting the tracks I'd used as I was about the b-roll footage, and it stuck with me enough that this will be my policy going forward. It did make me giggle a little to see a comment asking about it, though
