I’ve always heard about Penumbra phantasm and knew it was a homestuck thing, but never really knew the significance of it. Thank you so much for making such a comprehensive video!

I also almost drowned when I was a kid. We had a lake house RIGHT at the corner of where the lake and a channel running out of it met. I miss that house sometimes, we had so many memories going there with my extended family, swimming at the island in the center of the lake, boat rides with my grandparents, and eating at the local ice cream place or going through entire boxes of popsicles. The one thing I don’t miss was sleeping on that couch/pull out bed hybrid. Still upset my uncle sold it, I have a LOT of opinions about that decision. I’ll leave the actual account of what happened at the end so you don’t have to read it if it’ll be triggering. But anyway, I have this really weird “relationship” with what happened. I can remember everything leading up to it, and basically everything immediately after, but I can’t remember IT. And because of that, it’s never really affected me in the usual ways, basically I have no trauma from it. But because of the fact that I don’t have trauma the event basically gave me this weird form of like, idk what to call it, existentialism? Like, I know this horrible life altering traumatic thing happened to me, but I got off with just an, at most, anecdotal story and no memory of it. And so it kinda feels like, I’m not reacting correctly or something. I almost felt guilty, I had nothing bad done to my mental health while countless people who had gone through the same thing were traumatized. It’s like, I feel like I’m SUPPOSED to feel scared or traumatized but I’m NOT. And many years after it happened, when I came to that realization, the realization itself started haunting me, for years. In the present I’ve completely gotten over it, I hadn’t even thought about it until just now, but now I’m left with this weird feeling regarding it all. Not a particularly bad or good feeling, just… a feeling, like I’ve had this really unique and personal and weird experience that probably no one can fully relate to. I think the only feeling that I’ve had regarding it all that was clear from the beginning, was that the kid who pushed me in was an a-hole. Anyway what follows is a very un-detailed account of what happened (again, I can only recall what led up to it and what followed so this is a VERY brief account) Here’s the account. So we were sitting at the edge of the channel with my siblings, cousins, and some of the neighboring kids, and some a-hole pushed me in (and I was fully clothed so double a-hole, and holding food so triple a-hole). I don’t remember anything about when I was under, I just remember being wrapped up in a towel in my mom’s arms and feeling really cold because, again, I WAS FULLY CLOTHED (what a jerk). And everyone was asking if I was ok, but I guess at that point I’d already coughed up all the water so I basically just felt wet, cold, and mad at that one kid. And not once through the whole thing was I scared, it just never hit me. I learned after the fact that my mom had jumped in and grabbed me, apparently I was upside down so I probably was disoriented and that why I couldn’t get out on my own. But since I can’t remember we’ll never really know exactly why I couldn’t surface.

honestly as someone who has almost drowned multiple times and has a fear of the ocean as well as HATES the sound and feeling of water, it oddly sounds nice when you talk about your own experience with drowning. its oddly comforting to hear someone who shares the same experience and learning im not invalid or alone or feeling this way.

So like literally a week before this video came out apparently it was pointed out in the comments of the version of Penumbra that I’d been referencing specifically for this video was a (very well made) recreation of the Sound Test version. I did not find out about this until AFTER my video was already published. Which means that the water noises weren’t in the actual version that Toby Fox had made………. oops :/ That doesn’t discount like the other 90 percent of the video just know that the Penumbra discussion right at the end is apparently now inaccurate. I was under the impression at the time that it was an accurate source (and this is why I maintain that proper crediting is so important on UA-cam)

Went and checked out the mentioned version of the song, top comment is someone saying it wasn't made by toby fox and is an innacurate midi recreation and the poster agreeing saying they found out months after posting, and saying the waves weren't in it at all, unfortunate eh? Interesting video on the first watch though!

im not the first person to notice this, but one might see me mentioning it elsewhere since i rarely see it get addressed in theory videos. There is one pretty clear reason kris's skin turns blue, and thats because the style of the dark worlds is that of characters under the glow of a blacklight. i'm not sure how to explain that without pointing at every color choice and going "yeah that happens in UV light" because it all just clearly LOOKS like that's what it's evoking. but essentially its not a mystery why kris is blue. (tho in fairness to anyone who hasnt noticed this somehow, im only certain that this is the intention with 1) the light world characters in the dark worlds because we see both color schemes, and 2) ralsei because his scarf item description calls it red when it is bright rose-- as if blue light has mixed with it's local color.) there is enough water and ocean imagery evoked by deltarune that i easily believe that kris's color scheme is ALSO related to that. one decision can for sures be made for two reasons. i just feel it bares mentioning

Alright, I'm over halfway done with the video and let me just say holy shit. This is a very thorough yap session on Pen-Phan and I am all for it. I was introduced to Homestuck back in my teens in that transitional year between junior high and high school. I am now a year away from graduating with a bachelors. This fucking comic has rocked my world beyond any conceivable metric. Without this comic, I wouldn't have the humor, artistic drive, sense of humor, and desire to story-tell I have today. Toby Fox is one of the single biggest inspirations I have. I was deeeeep into the HS music seen back during my massive homestuck phase (lasted basically 2-4 years if you wanna crunch numbers) and I learned the ins and outs of the music scene. From the Bill Bolin situation, learning about Tensei and his work (please for the love of Troll Christ listen to GospelStuck), getting direct directions by Buzinkai herself as to what music system she uses (which I still use to this day)(PXTone if you're curious) (may she rest in peace..), to the whole beautiful clusterfuck that is the Cool and New Webcomic and their amazing music (my credit score is 720). All this to say.. I have been hyper aware of the chance of penumbral phantasm being in Deltarune. Hell, there are some fan songs that actually either have it as a leitmotif or outright make the main motif. I have been there for the full ride, digging through the unused music and listening to that damn beautiful song. I was there when the song Limelight was release (a fan made full version of Penumbral Phantasm for one of the s e v e r a l Homestuck fan albums). So just seeing someone else just as passionate about all of Toby's work just makes me so fucking happy. A few notes: 1. You referencing that one hyper-specific tweet where the person is like "She's your girl huh? Well, why is her leitmotif in my theme then?" nearly made me lose it. 2. This is how I find out that Bill Bolin was one of the first dominos that started Toby Fox's inevitable rise to power as he default dances on Sakurai and the Pope. 3. Homestuck? In my Deltarune? It's more likely than you think!

On the point of "this video might ruin the magic of Penumbra Phantasm," I don't think it can. Once the idea of Penumbra kind of got out there and the Deltarune fandom started seeing it as something that's as much of a possibility as the Homestuck fandom saw it as, I think everyone's more or less excited to see how it'll go. And, hey, in the end, I miss having that kind of exclusive knowledge, and, in turn, the exclusive excitement that us Homestucks used to have, but I'm also glad that the Deltarune fandom seem just as excited as we are about it. In the end, this video is far from the Deltarune fandom's first interaction with the track, either. And I think there's something special about Penumbra Phantasm - for the Deltarune fans, it still serves as Toby Fox's great unfinished symphony, something important to him that he never released, something to be excited for when it eventually reaches its spotlight hour, but for the Homestucks, it's the closing of a chapter that's well over a decade in the making, at this point, something that's very near and dear to our hearts. Nothing is going to take those aspects away from either fanbase, and even the small hints we get every once in a while, such as in [S] MSPAR: Remember, are enough to excite and to spark the imagination. And we *are* excited. I know some in the Homestuck fandom who are Penumbra enthusiasts feel that Toby Fox has all but left us behind, but I think they're wrong. I think he carries us with him, and I think that when Penumbra releases, which almost feels like an inevitability at this point, it will be the biggest love letter we as a fandom have received since the comic ended. It's hard to comprehend the fact that it's almost been a decade, hard to comprehend that I've been a fan for just as long. When Penumbra Phantasm finally shows its true form, I *will* cry. Just the thought of it is enough to get me close to that point. No amount of reassurance that it will happen is going to take that away from me.

Imma say it, FNAF doenst understand its own terror, we could see the signs since FNAF 4, the animatronics are not scary and theyre ambient barely scary and thats fine FNAFs scary element is in the supernatural and as such the main concept is fear of the unknow wich can only go so far to be fair, and the subversion of things that should be conforting yada yada yada, but BUT there was another element that could elevate it??? GORE GODDAMIT, IT WAS RIGHT THERE THE WHOLE TIME HOW DID WE NOT GET A TINGE OF FUCKIN GORE IN ANY GAME IN A WHOLE ASS DECADE???? I fell u with the water theory, i almost drowned multiple times when i was younger as a method of self harm( that i didnt realize ) i only stopped after once subsconciously trying to drown( not even swimming straight up walking to the bottom ) in a REALLY bad night in a REALLYYYY bad month, and that shit was so random lol, i literally was looking at the horizon in the beach and suddenly was in the ocean, took me some time to even walk close to water at night and just recently finally tried going in, baby steps amyright?

it's nice to see someone with such a genuine passion for homestuck even after all this time. it gets a bad rap - not entirely undeservedly, both for the comic itself but especially with the fandom around it - but it is absolutely an important part of deltarune and a great work in its own right. i personally can't really bring myself to read beyond canon (aside from the first update with sollux because that's my fucking boy!!!) due to how heavily i tend to fall into depressive slumps when engaging with homestuck in my current life. but all that being said, i'm glad the comic has its defenders. don't lose that passion. sorry for not having more to say about the video! i knew a lot of this already (not that this diminishes the value of the video or your research), but what you had to say about homestuck really spoke to me. hope you don't mind me airing out some of my longstanding thoughts about it in your comment section :')
