  • Video tutorial on how to knit a 1- or 2-color Fisherman's rib hat. Pattern describes a 2-color hat for an adult (hat circumference when worn ~21 in); for 1 color, follow same pattern but just with the 1 color for each row. This is a very stretchy hat and if you wish for snugger fit, then consider casting on stitches at the lower end of range shown below. Additional helpful links are at the end.
    Abbreviations: CC=contrasting color; circ=circular; dec=decrease; DPN=double-pointed needles; in=inch; K=knit; K1b=knit into the st below; K2tog=knit 2 stitches together; MC=main color; P=purl; P1b=purl into the st below; rep=repeat; SSK=slip slip knit; st=stitch.
    Gauge with US 5 (3.75 mm) needles in 1-color Fisherman’s rib (video on this stitch: • Fisherman's rib scarf ... ): 11 st = ~1.5-2 in depending on the yarns used. The finished hats shown in video were knit with yarns such as LionBrand Mandala [cast on 84 or 96 sts] and KnitPicks Wool of the Andes [cast on 72 sts]. You will need 1 skein of yarn in each color (~4 oz or 120 g each), one 16-inch US 5 circ needle, and 4 DPNs (same size as circ needle). Check gauge and adjust needle size as needed. A finished hat circumference of about 17-18 in will stretch to fit an adult head size of 21 in.
    Designate the 2 yarn colors as MC and CC. With CC, cast on either 72, 84, or 96 stitches with the circ needle (I used long-tail cast on). Joining in the round (place a st marker), do a set-up row of K1, P1 with the CC. Then do the following 2 rows (note Row 1 is in MC and Row 2 is in CC):
    Row 1 (MC): *K1b, P1. Rep from * until end of row.
    Row 2 (CC): *K1, P1b. Rep from * until end of row.
    Continue Rows 1 & 2 until hat measures ~ 6.5-7 in from the brim, ending in Row 2. Transfer sts evenly onto 3 DPNs (depending on number of sts cast, divide as follows on each DPN and place st markers at the half-way mark on each DPN to divide the sts on each DPN into 2 sections, for a total of 6 sections): 24 sts on each DPN if 72 sts cast on (marker after 12 sts), 28 sts if 84 sts cast on (marker after 14 sts), and 32 sts if 96 sts cast on (marker after 16 sts)
    Then do hat decreases in each of the 6 sections as shown below (sts remaining on each DPN after an actual dec row are shown in brackets for hats with 72 sts/84 sts/96 sts):
    Row 1: SSK, *K1b, P1. Rep from * until 2 sts, then K2tog [10/12/14 sts remain in each section]
    Row 2: K1, *K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    Row 3: K1, *K1b, P1. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    Row 4: K1, *K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    Row 5: SSK, P1, *K1b, P1. Rep until last 3 sts, then K1b, K2 tog [8/10/12 sts remain in each section]
    Row 6: *K1, P1b. Rep until last 2 sts, then K2 [not a dec row]
    Row 7: SSK, *K1b, P1. Rep from * until 2 sts, then K2tog [6/8/10 sts remain in each section]
    Row 8: K1, *K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    Row 9: SSK, P1, *K1b, P1. Rep until last 3 sts, then K1b, K2 tog [4/6/8 sts remain in each section]
    Row 10: *K1, P1b. Rep until last 2 sts, then K2 [not a dec row]
    If you cast on 72 sts for the hat, then jump to Row 17. Otherwise continue on to Row 11:
    Row 11: SSK, *K1b, P1. Rep from * until 2 sts, then K2tog [-/4/8 sts remain in each section]
    Row 12: K1, *K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    If you cast on 84 sts for the hat, then jump to Row 17. Otherwise continue on to Row 13:
    Row 13: SSK, P1, *K1b, P1. Rep until last 3 sts, then K1b, K2 tog [-/-/6 sts remain in each section]
    Row 14: *K1, P1b. Rep until last 2 sts, then K2 [not a dec row]
    Row 15: SSK, *K1b, P1. Rep from * until 2 sts, then K2tog [-/-/4 sts remain in each section]
    Row 16: K1, *K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]
    Row 17: *SSK, K2tog [2/2/2 sts remain in each section]. Remove the st markers in this round.
    Row 18: *SSK, K2tog [2/2/2 sts remain on each DPN]
    Leave about an 8 in tail on both yarns and cut them. Thread both yarn tails through a tapestry needle and pass them through all 6 sts and pull. Insert the needle through center of top to bring it to the wrong side and then weave yarn tails. Clean-up the yarn tails at the cast on edge (link to video on doing this: • Cleaning up circular k... ) and can add a pompom to the hat, if desired.

    This is a great video! I love to make fisherman's rib hats--in fact, it's my favorite thing to knit right now! I actually think that two-color fisherman's rib is easier than single color because the colors make it easy to know which row you're on, 1 or 2!

    I love how your hats look and turn out. But mine does not look as good. The stitches look pretty big (loose) compared to yours. And my contrast color is showing thru a lot more than yours. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong. I’ve used size 8 needle. Maybe after more rows it will help. I’m determined to make this work!

    • @KnittycatsKnits

      Hi Debbie, happy to hear you are trying this out. Fisherman's rib stitch always looks a bit clunky at the start. But once you've knit up an inch or two, it should look good. But because this stitch does have a lot of stretch, may help to go down in size to try it (may be size 7) and knitting a bit more tighter might keep the contrasting color well hidden to only show on one side (but don't wanna go too tight or nay be hard to do the knitting-below-the-stitch). No matter how it turns out, it's great that you knitted it and will provide just as much warmth and will be fabulous!!😀 Thanks for watching my videos and trying the patterns! Best wishes!

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Sharon, meant to reply sooner but the week got away from me 😊 You need enough stitches to provide a 21 inch circumference for an adult size hat (when fit on head; can be about 16-17 inches when hat is unstretched). The best way to know how many stitches to cast is to knit a small swatch in the stitch with the yarn and needles (can try US 9 or 10 size needles). Then measure the width. Say you cast on 11 stitches and say the width is 3 inches (when unstretched), then to get about 16 inches, multiply 16 by 11, then divide by 3 = approx 62 sts. You can round that down to 60 sts and that may work (my pattern calls for 84 or 96 sts but should work for stitches increased or decreased by 12 sts, so thinking 60 or 72 sts may work with chubbier yarn). Hope this helps but reach out if you have questions. Best wishes with your project!😊

    if I wanted to make this using 100% wool,( planning a winter trip to Iceland so need the warmth) should I use dk weight yarn or worsted weight yarn

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Samantha, the Mandala yarn I used to knit the hat in the video (and in pattern provided in video description) is more of a DK weight yarn and the KnitPicks Wool of the Andes (the plain red hat) is a worsted weight yarn. So you could use either. I think the worsted weight might be a good choice for a nice and warm hat for use in Iceland; and the stitch itself is quite stretchy, so may not feel as bulky and would still have some give and stretchiness to it. Thanks for watching my video (: Best wishes for your project and the upcoming trip!

    I've been searching all over the web. Do you know you have the only tutorial on a 2-color FR hat?
    I CO 100 st, and I'm ready for the crown. Following your pattern, I would have too many rounds in the crown, giving me a too-long top. How would I decrease faster, but smoothly, making the top more round?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and trying out the pattern! For your hat of 100 sts, you could try the following for the crown (which I think should work just fine and should not give too long of a top): divide the sts into 5 sections of 20 sts each (definitely add a proactive lifeline before you start decreases; link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/hLdNBLuC1sY/v-deo.html). For each 20 sts section, do the following: Row 1: SSK, * K1b, P1. Rep from * until 2 sts, then K2tog [18 sts remain in each section]; Row 2: K1, * K1, P1b. Rep from * until last st, then K1 [not a dec row]; Row 3: SSK, P1, * K1b, P1. Rep until last 3 sts, then K1b, K2 tog [16 sts remain in each section]; Row 4: * K1, P1b. Rep until last 2 sts, then K2 [not a dec row]. Repeat these 4 rows 3 more times [4 sts remain in each section at the end of these repeats]. Then do a row of * SSK, K2tog * [2 sts remain in each section]. Then do K2tog around [1 st remains in each section; total 5 sts]. Remember to alternate colors for each row as you do the decreases, if doing 2 color hat) Hope this helps and do let me know how it turns out. Best wishes😊

    can we do this without decreasing in the end. i.e. just pull the yarn off and stretch and tight it normally as done in beanies?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  Рік тому +1

      Hi Sana, I have not tried that technique with the Fisherman's Rib hat but I don't see why you couldn't do that. One other option would be also to just do one row of decreases, like do a "knit 2 together" all the way around and then pull the yarn through all the stitches (this will just decrease the stitches by a little bit, so it is easier to scrunch it up at the top when the yarn is pulled). I will have to give this a try the next time I knit a Fisherman's Rib or other such "beanie-like" hat. Thanks for the suggestion and also for watching my video! Best wishes 😃

    What’s the difference between the Fisherman’s, double, and Brioche knitting? Don’t get it!

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  4 роки тому

      As far as I know, brioche and fisherman's rib are different. In brioche, we create the brioche stitch by slipping a stitch with the yarn in front. In Fisherman's rib, we knit into stitch below. So although they end up giving the same look of the fabric created, they are knit up differently. Double knitting, I think, is entirely different. It is knit in just regular knit-purl stitches with color changes to create the double-knitted look (pattern is same one each side but colors are flipped). Hope this helps.

    Unfortunately I started knitting this hat before I came across your pattern and I’ve got 68 stitches. I’ll have to divide my stitches 22/23/23. Will that affect the pattern?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  4 роки тому

      Hi Konstantina, sorry but the decreases I provided will not work with 68 sts. If you have knit quite a bit and don't wish to undo it and restart, you could try different decreases. Once hat knit to length, divide stitches as 24, 24, and 20. Then do 1 row of SSK, K2tog all the way around (34 sts remain). Then do 1 row of set-up (just plain K1, P1 all the way around) followed by 2 repeats of the Fisherman's rib pattern. Then repeat all this one more time, but may wish to do the Fisherman's rib rows only 1 time instead of 12. You will now have 17 sts (6, 6, 5). Do another round of SSK, K2tog until last 3 sts, then do K2tog, slip last st and pass the last knitted st over it (so 8 sts remain; rearrange on needles as 2, 2, 4). Then repeat set up row (K1, P1) and 1 repeat of Fisherman's rib pattern. Finally, do SSK, K2tog, so 4 st remain and you can then cut yarn and pass it through them. Note that I have not tried these decreases so not exactly sure how it will look. Would suggest adding a proactive lifeline before starting decreases (link to video: ua-cam.com/video/hLdNBLuC1sY/v-deo.html). May need to play around with repeats of Fisherman's rib pattern to get a good shaping. Hope this helps but let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊

      Knittycat's Knits It was a loooong process but I finally finished it! 72 stitches as you suggested was too big so I kept 68 stitches but had to switch to one color for the decreases! Overall it turned out to be great ! Thank you!

      That's great, Konstantina! Doing the decreases in 1-color was a good choice and so happy it worked well for you 😀 Best wishes!

    I have to buy dubbel pointed needles. How long should they be?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  Рік тому +1

      Good question. They come in diff lengths: 6 or 8 or even 10 inches long. The shortest ones are good for socks. But usually for hats, it would be better to get ones that are 8 inches long (they usually come in a set of 4 or 5; the set of 5 is better). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes🤗

      @@KnittycatsKnits ohno I did 100 sts thinking I could alter the patern. But I can't devide 100 by six. I need to lose 4 sts. Do you have any idea how I can do that without it looking bad?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  Рік тому +1

      Hi Suzanne, you can do four decreases. That way 4 sts will have decreased. But given that this is rib pattern, that might mess things up a bit. If you do this though, suggest knitting 46 sts in pattern (ending on P1) then doing a k2tog and a p2tog. Then do another 46 in pattern (again ending on a P1) and do k2tog, p2tog. That should drop your count to 96 sts and you should still be able to continue in the Fisherman's rib pattern. Let me know if that works. Depending on how much you have knit up, it may be easier to take it apart and starting again 😊 (we've all been there; I just had to rip out an almost completed stranded color headband bec my gauge was not right and would have been a super tight fit). Just started up with it again last night and this time, triple-checked my gauge😊

    can anybody help me, I am knitting this hat in 1 colour, I had a phone call just as I got the the last stich of a row, but I can't remember which row I had just finished 2 or 3, how do you figure the rows out, I do tick of my rows as I complete them but the phone call distracted me and I can't remember if I ticked the row of or not

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Samantha, couple ways to try and figure out the row in 1-color. You can count each row from the cast on edge (in a vertical line of the "v" shaped ridged, each "v" would be a row); remember to account for the 1 set-up row right after cast-on when you count. That way you can know which row you stopped on. The other way is to look closely at the stitches themselves of the row you just knit to see if the knit stitch looks like regular knit stitch and if purl looks a bit wonky (ie, may have been knit as a P1b) or vice versa. May need to spread the fabric out a bit and stretch them to see closely; or see under a magnifying glass). With 1-color, it can be a bit difficult to discern the rows in this manner. So would suggest trying the counting way first and then double-checking with the second way. A third way is to actually try and unraveling the last stitch to see if it was a regular purl or a P1b or to start knitting next row assuming it will be a K1b, P row and it will be evident if that is the right row or not (but this can be tricky, especially to put stitch back or unravel it to put back on needle the right way). Hope this helps. But worst case, even if you don't end up figuring it out, can just start back with the K1b, P1. It won't look as bad, overall. Best wishes!😊

    Your needles look more like 5mm which would be US 8. The pattern calls for US 5 which is much smaller.

      Hi Shelly, I used the larger needles just for the video demo but for the pattern provided in video, I did use the US 5 (3.75 mm) size. Hope this helps (sorry for late reply; was traveling 😊) Thanks for watching and best wishes!
