I couldn't agree more about the brioche stitch! I also wanted to tell you that I have started Portuguese knitting to help relieve pressure on my hands and it has been really helpful and I think my knitting is better! Thank you for all of your videos!

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial! I started a muffler using your written instructions and after about 30 rows, when each side is clearly a different colour, I found an easy way to memorise the pattern: when your working yarn matches the colour facing you, that’s a *knit one below, purl 1* row; when your working yarn contrasts with the colour facing you, that’s a *purl 1 below, knit 1* row. I haven’t had to look at the pattern ever since.

I finally learned brioche because of a pattern I bought and I also prefer Fisherman's knit and prefer how it looks even tho it's such a subtle difference! It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who doesn't like brioche!

I spent several weeks learning the brioche stitch and then realized I don't like doing it. It is not relaxing or enjoyable for me. Once I discovered the fisherman's knit I was ecstatic! It is relaxing and even with the 2 colours it is an easy repeat. My scarf is looking great.

    Great tutorial as always!!
This amazes me... I figured out how to knit brioche with this pattern! As a continental knitter I never understood all the throwing in english language patterns, so I sought out the german "Patentmuster" which aparently is fishermans rip stitch.
If you change every "knit below" for a yarn over you'll get brioche, it looks the same. It might be looser but still as beautiful!

Staci- According to Nancy Marchant, fisherman's rib (slipping stitches with a K1B or P1B) is actually just a version of brioche. Who knew! All are types of "tucked" stitch patterns. Check out her interview on the Fruity Knitting podcast for more information.

This is so interesting and different from "standard" knit-and-purl-stitch knitting. My brain would definitely have to be "engaged" when starting doing a piece with this. I totally get why you kept the instructions in front of you while working with a pattern for this.
I wonder if Brioche patterns could be adapted to be done this way? Hmm. Not having done a Brioche pattern, yet, I have no idea! lol
I did see one of the podcasters talking about a technique called a "One Pass Brioche". *it may have been Grace on Babbles Traveling Yarn*. She talked about looking it up to learn because she wasn't liking the standard Brioche due to the fiddliness factor. I liked the sound of the one-pass! Nathan on Sockmatician may have been who she said had the tutorial. Man I am so certain about things today, eh? My brain hasn't fully cleared from taking Benadryl last night...my apologies for the vagueness.
I am definitely going to try the pattern you designed, but after Christmas. So many projects, so little organization to getting them done! :D Thanks again for your UA-cam channel. You are always my first go-to on questions, refreshing my brain or who I send others to to learn.

Question about knitting two color fisherman's rib with your hat pattern. I understand alternating rows, but how do I keep the right color stitches in place while decreasing. I've figured out a work around, but it is labor intensive. Have you tried this? I could use the help. I'm sure I'm missing something simple.

Question about using life lines with this stitch: After I weave in the yarn I'm using as a lifeline, do I just keep going as though that strand isn't there? Also, when I had to rib back to a life line, the end stitches + where the working tail goes got all discombobulated. Any tips on that?
PS - I'm having a field day with this contrasting fisherman's knit. Just tickled pink with the result!

Increasing/Decreasing in this stitch isn't an easy explanation...in fact, I wrote a pattern for a Fisherman's Rib Hat, and there was a lot of trial-and-error involved in getting the pattern just right. My answer to you is to follow a pattern (unless you are interested in the trial-and-error yourself). When working this in the round, you mentioned alternating the colors. Do you mean 1 color for odd rows and 1 for even rows? Can't wait to try this. One more question- is the spring back the same as a normal rib? Thank you for another great video.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 років тому +1

Yes - when working in-the-round, just alternate colors every round. Fisherman's Rib is quite different from a regular 1x1 rib, and doesn't have the same "spring". I go into a bit more detail and compare it side-by-side with regular rib in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PtaBwXoq80I/v-deo.html

Hi! I'd like to buy the fisherman's rib hat pattern but I'd really want to do it in the two-colour stitch shown here (with the idea of it being reversible). Would the technique be exactly the same in the pattern? The only example of a hat knitted with the two-colour fisherman's rib I've seen, the decreases didn't maintain that single colour ribbing and instead mixed with the groove colour, which I disliked aesthetically.

    • @verypinkknits
