Great video! I have a simple tip to add. When knitting FMR on a loop in one colour. To know which row you are on, no need to panic nor put a marker. Look at your stitches closely and you'll notice that some stitches have a double thread passing through the base of the stitch, some have an single thread. (for example on one row: all the Knit stitches have one thread at their base and all the pearl stitches have a double - or the other way around) the stitches you knit below are the stitches with one single thread passing through their base. I put one marker at the end go that row so I know when to switch for the next row.
I want to share this with you that I come to your videos not only to learn knitting but also to look at your hands.Your hands are hands of a mother,a very satisfied person and hands of a very loving, caring person.Looking at your hands give me a sense of peace .
I like this 2-color way much better than I was taught where you start the k1b on the first row which causes giant loops to appear and gets really big circumference.
Thanks! So glad you liked it. Will be posting a more detailed video on knitting a Fisherman's rib hat in the next couple weeks. Thanks for watching my videos and best wishes!😊
Thank you for the 2 color tutorial and showing how this looks. Today I will do it again. You have a very simple tutorial and wonderfully done. Thank you for your time. :)
THANK YOU! I was trying to do this in the same row with both strands of yarn (fair isle). I was doing k1b (color 1), p1 (color 2) for every row, and it was difficult to find the stitches below because they were smothered in all the yarn I was carrying over. I'm going to unravel and start over because this looks so much better!! Thank you!!
Hi Tamara, yes this very much has a brioche-like look and the same stretchiness in the fabric. Do give it a try and hope you like knitting it. Thanks for watching my video😊
Thanks! If you haven't already, check out the full hat video in 1 or 2 color rib at ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html. Thanks for watching and best wishes😀
Dearest Knittycat, I am in great need of your great experience. I am trying, and trying to knit a 2color Fisherman’s knit in the round. I have no trouble with the pattern but I can’t seem to understand when I finish a row and have both colors behind how I pick up the right color without mixing both colors. I end up with two vertical rows with color one and color two having both colors. I have watched your tutorial at least fifty times. You explain what to do but you don’t knit to the end of the row so that I can watch how you change colors. I have been knitting forever, as you know, so why am I having so much trouble. I can do this in Brioche easily. You are so great .Thank you sooooo much. Jan on the Oregon coast.🤗
Hi Jan, so sorry for the delay in responding. I had seen your previous comment and was hoping to test out the stitch before I could respond; it has been a while since I knit the 2-color hat so needed a refresher (: Well, I tested it out just now and at the end of each row, take the yarn to the back and bring the new yarn from under it. This should give you a neater edge. Note that the edge/join may not have the exact same look as the rest of the stitches but it should be neater if you follow this throughout. Hope this helps and again, thanks so much for your patience. Do let me know if that works. It has been a hectic Summer for me and I have been very much backlogged and unable to post new videos. I will be posting a complete Fisherman's rib hat video (in 1 and 2 colors), which will also show the decreases; I will be sure to call out handling of yarn at the end of rows. Things are slowly clearing off my plate, so hoping I can do this by end of next week. Thanks for being such a great supporter of my channel and best wishes my friend 😊
Hi Jan, I just posted the hat video which shows all the steps, including decreases, and clearly shows the yarn carryovers (slightly diff than one shown here). Link to new video is ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html. Check it out and let me know if you have questions. Enjoy the weekend and best wishes!😊
Please can you show us how to make increases, like doing a raglan sleeve? Increasing at the yoke. Thanks in advance, your explanation is spot on for this type of stitch, believe me I've been wandering around UA-cam looking for someone to help me learn it.
Thanks, Fidelma! Knitting a raglan-style cardigan in Fisherman's rib is a great idea! I have not designed one yet, but am inspired to do so. For now though, to increase a stitch, you would K1b, yo, K1b into the same stitch, if that helps. Will try to post a video on this in the upcoming weeks (please subscribe and click on bell icon so you get notifications when I post videos). Thanks for watching and best wishes😊
Excellent idea, Lise! I've been meaning to do a video but thought I'd wait until I had another project (besides this hat) that would include the inc and dec in the Fisherman's rib stitch. But I think I will go ahead and make a video just to show them (since it may be a while before I have a nice project with this stitch). Thanks for watching and best wishes!
Very clear instruction video, thank you! I plan to use this for the hem of a jumper and have a question - in your yellow and orange hat at the beginning of the video, which color is knitted as the 'K1b, P1' row? I am just trying to figure out how to get the color I want to be dominant on the correct side.
Thanks, Sidsel! Not sure I understand the question. Did you mean to ask about decreases instead? Am working on a video for a hat using this pattern and hope to post it in the next couple weeks.
Yes, that should work just as well. Brioche and Fisherman's rib stitches are like twins; they have the same, super-stretchy look. Fisherman's rib may be a bit easier for a beginner. But be sure to put in proactive lifelines as you knit (both are harder to unwork if you need to take out stitches to fix knitting).
Hi Andrew, sorry I don't think I have a full tutorial on knitting a hat using double-pointed needles (DPNs) right from the start. However, I do have a video on transferring needles from a circular needle onto DPNs and you can check that out here: ua-cam.com/video/rLG4r-Sw1qk/v-deo.html. If you do wish to use DPNs from the start to knit a project such as this hat, then you will need a total of 4 needles: 3 needles to split the stitches onto and 1 needle to knit around with. It is really not that bad if you try it and using DPNs right from the start is sometimes needed if you don't have/need enough stitches to stretch across a 16" circular needle. I will plan to do a video on this in the future, so thanks for the question and for watching my video. Best wishes (:
Hi Donna, the number of stitches would depend on yarn type used and needle size. For an 8-year-old, typical hat circumference is about 19-20 inches. So, if you use similar yarn as shown in description of my other Fisherman's rib hat video (see ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html), then I expect 72 sts may work. Highly recommend checking gauge first. Hope this helps but let me know if you have other questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for the project 😀
I have a questions: Two color fisherman’s rib in the round, when switching from color A to color B at the beginning of the round, do you cross your yarns, pull the new yarn under the just used yarn? I am just working on a Cowl and the yarn switch looks neat most of the time, but there are a few times when it looks messy and I think that’s when I crossed the yarns wrong. Thank you if you can clarify.
Hi Doris, good question. Please check out my more recent Fisherman's rib hat tutorial in which I clearly show the yarn carryovers at the end of each row (link: ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html). Hope that helps but let me know if you still have questions. Best wishes for your cowl project and happy holidays!😀
Hi Hilde, it looks like the link is not working. Try this new link ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html. If it also does not work, then search in UA-cam for "fisherman rib hat knittycat" and it should bring up the video. Hope this helps. Takk for watching my video and hope you subscribe😃 Best wishes!
In the first round of decreases, you started out with the K1Below, P1 . . . but on the second needle you did K1, Purl1Below. Was that intentional? Are we doing Knit 1 below or Purl 1 below on the first round of decreases? Or do you switch back and forth?
Is there a pattern where the front and back look exactly the same? Meaning purl stitches are the same color (black) on both side and knit stitches are the same color on both side (gray).
That's a great question. Unfortunately, I don't know of a pattern using the Fisherman's rib where this will happen (ie, same color on both sides for the same stitch). I will do some digging though and will get back to you again if I come across something. Thanks and best wishes!
Hi Patty, that's a great question. I had not thought of it. But have tried it and it does not seem to be possible (because the 2 brioche stitches end up being next to each other and the yarn overs that make up those brioche stitches just seem to blend into one). I tried looking up to see if anyone else had posted a 2x2 rib in brioche and didn't see anything. Do let me know if you find/think of a way. Thanks and best wishes!🤗
Good question, monelle! The best way to know the number of stitches to cast on for bulky yarn would be to determine the gauge by knitting a small swatch (sample). Please see my video on how to this at ua-cam.com/video/OcH0elMUdxo/v-deo.html. The yarn label should typically say what size needles are recommended; 10-1/2 may work. But you will need fewer stitches than what my pattern calls for and will need to adjust when doing the hat decreases when shaping the crown. Hopefully this helps but let me know if you still have questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes!😊
Hi Lesia, check out the video I posted last week that shows the entire hat creation, including decreases (link: ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html). Hope that helps. Thanks for watching! Best wishes😊
Hi there thanks so much for the video! I've started making a 2 color hat in fisherman's rib in the round and I'm super keen to know how to decrease for the top. I can't seem to find this information anywhere else!
Hi Anivere, so glad to hear you are creating the hat. I have been meaning to upload a video on the hat decreases but have fallen behind and playing catch up. Promise to have it up before end of next week. Thanks for your patience and for watching my videos😊
Hi Ramida, thanks for the question. There are several ways to decrease the top. I am actually working on polishing the pattern and will be posting a video on this in the next week. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching my video 😊
Hi Elvira, I just posted the hat video which shows all the steps for knitting this hat including the decreases (ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html). The video shows decreasss starting at 12:25, but you may want to see video from start since have changed slightly the yarn caregivers between rows. Hope this helps. Hi Sandra, it is knit one below. As shown in video, you have to knit it into the stitch itself rather than doing a regular knit. You can check the Fisherman's rib scarf video, which also shows this K1b stitch (ua-cam.com/video/xiNZMcTCKgM/v-deo.html). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊
Hi Kathy, actually have knit several Fisherman's rib beanies but have not recorded a video yet. Will definitely do one by end of June though, so please stay tuned and thanks so much for your support.😊
Hi Samidha, that depends on type of yarn and size of needles you use. Would suggest making a small swatch with the yarn you wish to use to determine gauge (for medium weight yarns, can try needle sizes from 4-6 mm or so). Once you know gauge, then can determine number of stitches. The hat you make should be about 16-17 in circumference; it will stretch to fit a standard 21 in head. So say your sample that you knit up in the pattern with say 13 sts measures 4 inches, then knitting with 4 times 13, will give you 64 sts (going even for hat pattern). And 64 sts should give you a hat that fits. Hope this helps.
This was very helpful, but it would have been better if you had done a few rows with the two colours, so we could see how to switch them. I also would have liked to see how you finished it off, it seems like everyone shows how to start them, but not how to finish them off...
Thanks! Actually, I have since posted a full video on this hat (with 2 colors) and showing the decreases. Check it out at: ua-cam.com/video/xfOETKM757I/v-deo.html. Hope that helps. Best wishes😀

Does 60 stitches give a medium size hat
