You have changed my life! I have been hating magic loop as I have been stopping to pull out the needle and turn every time I run out of stitches.... can't wait to finish my project and try another hat your way! thank you!
Thank you Staci. I didn’t see a “little i” but did get a copy by going to your web site. I really do ‘go to’ you on UA-cam for any knitting help. Enjoy your patience and instruction, and tips. This is regarding the double cuff hat.
I have knitted my whole life but have never seen or used this stitch sequence. Staci, I absolutely love the result!! It’s nice and soft and chunky and beautiful! And fun. Sometimes the same old stuff is boring. This is giving me a happy boost of hat making!! Thank you for the excellent patterns and tutorials you provide. You are just an amazing teacher. ❤️
Thank you for this lovely pattern. I use 2 circular needles if I don't have a 16" at hand. One of them is usually a half size bigger or smaller, but that is okay. I start the first round with the second needle ( joining the round as usual), and knit to the end. The first needle is now available to be used for round 3. I continue that way to the very end, works well when decreasing at the crown too.
I have to get the pattern and make this now, for the whole family. Hubby's bald head will appreciate it, and all the boys will love the set when out in the cold--when we HAVE cold. Alabama, you know.
My man wants me to make him a really warm hat. I think this is perfect! Thanks! It's in my queue ready for me when I finish the 2 wips I have going right now. Can't wait. I was intimidated by the fisherman's rib, you made it easy to understand. Thank you!
I've made a bunch of fisherman's rib scarves and there are so many different ways to achieve the same result. I found that you can just knit then knit one below and you never have to purl. It's one of my favorite patterns because it's so easy!
I just love Staci's tutorials, they are so easy to follow. I'm glad you covered this stitch. I tried watching other videos on the fisherman's rib but I just couldn't get the knit below. Thank you!!!!
I've been trying to find a different hat to knit for my daughter's boyfriend this year, and this may just be the ticket! He is a very large man, though. I hope the large size will fit him! Thank you Staci, for all that you do for us!
I LOVE YOU! I'm a little over a beginner now and I have learned a lot from you. Thank you SO much. You make knitting so interesting. More power to you🤗!
Just followed your tutorial on double thick cuff hat. The hat looks great in Illimani Santi - Colour Lilac Season. My next project is the Fisherman's Rib Hat and Scarf. Pattern downloaded and your tutorial video all set to begin. Staci, you are definitely the best knitting instructor. You clearly present all the steps of a project in a well paced manner with links clarifying any new concepts. The videos of your tutorials are superb with excellent close-ups of all stages of the project being presented. I am hoping to do the fisherman's rib hat using the two-color fishermans' rib by alternating a light and dark color on alternate round (in-the-round).
Firstly, you are the very best knitting instructor ever! So helpful and clear, perfectly explained and demonstrated - I love all your Slow Motion videos and all your regular speed videos - whenever I need assistance I only look at yours now for everything! My husband now says "is that the American lady - she seems very pleasant!" Secondly, I'm trying to understand why the scarf has a slightly different stitch from the hat - why aren't they the same? Thank you SO MUCH! Ann from UK.
Thank you! The hat and the scarf are the same stitch but they are worked differently because the scarf is knit flat, with a "right side" and "wrong side", and the hat is knit in-the-round.
Staci, your hat is so gorgeous, and I love the scarf. Please please how to do you fix mistakes in this pattern.Thank you.I just can’t get back to pattern again and I’ve been knitting 60 years. ❤️
Staci, I love your method for attaching the pompom so it can be removed for washing the hat. When you gift a hat like this to a non-knitter, do you tell them how to remove the pompom and reattach? Include a tapestry needle with the gift? I’m knitting one for a cousin who lives far away and want her to be able to care for it. Thanks, another great video!
It's a good idea, Amy! Any time I give a gift of wool to someone who isn't familiar with caring for it, I also include a little handwritten care card and a pouch of Eucalan wool soap - they sell little individual "servings" - www.knitpicks.com/accessories/Eucalan_Woolwash__DEucalan.html
VeryPink Knits Hi Staci, yes, I do that too with Soak. I am thinking I will send her a link to your video too so she sees the process. Who knows, maybe she’ll start knitting!
Good day, the rib knit 🧶 stitch is similar to the crochet rib stitch. I always have a problem keeping the yarn from curving into a twist. It takes a lot of skill and eye coronation to keep the yarn even. The Bronx New York stay Coronavirus free
Is it possible to use this stitch pattern on a double cuff brim using the provisional cast-on? I love how thick it is and would love a super double thick hat brim.
What a great tutorial and just what I needed as I am knitting hats for the homeless here in UK and your design looks so lovely and warm. I am sorry to trouble you but can you tell me how I can get a written copy of your pattern please?
I knit continental style and use the Norwegian Purl how would I accomplish this pattern. Would I need to switch back to English Style since I despise continental purling. Please let me know Thankyou
Great video!! Those cables lay so nicely. I'm having fits with the longer Knitter's Pride cables. They are so thin and coiled, I can't lay my magic loop flat to keep from twisting. Any way to straighten them out? thanks for all you do for us!!
I purchased a "pack" of them. They were so badly coiled I sent them back, did get a refund. Now I need another set. Without breaking my bank, which set are better? I need to stick with Knitter's Pride, so much invested in needles points already.
LynnAnn Thomas I have a set of Knitters Pride 16” needles that don’t coil, but they’re probably too small to coil. I have KnitPicks regular sized interchangeable needles and have never had a problem with them coiling during magic loop.
I'm curious why you didn't include a regular 1x1 rib as a starting brim? Was that a design choice or something else? You are the best at explaining all things related to knitting. Thank you for all the videos!
There is no reason to use 1x1 rib on the brim...Fisherman's rib works just as well for the brim, and my design choice was to keep it all the same ribbing.
Hi Staci, I just started making the hat, and I'm making it with only 1 type of yarn, a variegated one. I was wondering instead of the setup rows for each color change can I just continue with the pattern?
Staci, thank you for this wonderful video. Any suggestions for making the fisherman rib stitch hat with a double thick hat cuff? Would a 2x2 rib and the fisherman stitch have the same gauge?
My instinct is that the gauge would be really different in those two stitches (fisherman's rib and 2x2 rib). If you want to do a double cuff, I recommend doing it in fisherman's rib.
I love your videos, I have been teaching myself to knit for two years now and my success is in great part to you! I do have a question about why, when changing a color, you have to do the knit rounds? I am sure it is a basic answer, but I am curious.
Will this scarf be the same on both sides? Even at the joining of the new color at the two color changes? I'm trying to avoid the purl bumps causing alternating colors where the colors join.
@@verypinkknits I changed to color #2 last night, but not before I tried a technique that uses a lifeline, then picks up stitches in the new color. I had a lot of trouble trying to control the tension. I am using bamboo needles and acrylic yarn in the proper weight class. Having gotten in the picked up row and a plain knit row, it occurred to me that the formation of the knit 1 below stitches would cover at least every other purl bump. I ended up pulling that all out and started again switching colors as per your pattern. It seems a bit uneven, the knit side looking like the knit below stitches reach a bit farther down. Do we really need to do a straight knit row for the first row when changing to the next color?
I love this hat and scarf and than you for the info on ordering the fur pom poms!! I love them!! I am going to make some of these for family up North for Christmas! One question: Does the button ever bother the top of the head if worn for a while?

I just started your pattern for the Fisherman's Rib Scarf. When I do the purl stitch and remove the stitch from the needle, it looks like a dropped stitch. I think the outcome might be ok, but definitely not as nice as yours. Am i doing something wrong?
I'm starting your pattern but this time I am only using one colour. If you are not changing colours in the hat, do you still knit the set up round at row 25?

I use the tips from a 16" interchangeable set, and they are shorter. Most longer tips (made for 24" or longer circulars) are too long for the short cords.

How long did you make your scarf? I don’t see on the pattern how long the scarf is. It would be necessary to know the length of the scarf so that you have enough yarn when knitting the scarf in thirds of each color.
When you say 16 inches, is that from needle tip to needle tip or just the measurement of the cord?
Tip to tip.
VeryPink Knits thanks! Good to know!
Hi, could this be done in a Bulky yarn and how would I adjust the amount of stitches. thank you
No, sorry...using bulky yarn would change the pattern entirely...you would actually need a totally new pattern written for that yarn weight.

Plz explain how to knit a cap with straight needles. Thank you 😊
Super nice. How long is your scarf? Hat turned out nice although it wasn’t easy! I got the same colors as in the video
The general rule of thumb is to make the scarf the same length as the wearer's "wing span" or as long as they are tall.
Can't wait to try this. But you don't do anything special for joining in the round. Do you have issues with ladders. And thank goodness for lifelines!
No - no issues with ladders, and I don't do anything special when I join in the round.

This is outstanding video. Thank you.
Hello, I love the patterns you knit and design. I have a question. Can I use acrylic worsted yarn to knit this pattern?
The pattern will work with any fiber type, but a wool or wool blend will give you the warmest hat.
I just started your pattern for the Fisherman's Rib Scarf. When I do the purl stitch and remove the stitch from the needle, it looks like a dropped stitch. I think the outcome might be ok, but definitely not as nice as yours. Am i doing something wrong?
Because you're purling into the stitch below, it does end up looking like a dropped stitch right after you work it. But it all turns out correctly.
Please will you tell me what is the length of the hat from the cast on to the start of the decreases. My hat seems a little short Thank you.
The hat measures about 5 inches from the cast-on to the beginning of the decreases.
VeryPink Knits Thankyou so much. The hat is perfect.Love the pattern
I'm starting your pattern but this time I am only using one colour. If you are not changing colours in the hat, do you still knit the set up round at row 25?
No - no need to work the subsequent setup rounds unless you are changing colors.
Thanks so much Love all your videos. Smiling and learning at the same time!
Hi Staci, if I use just one color, do I need to do the setup row after every 24 rows of round 1 and round 2?
Nope - only knit the setup round if you are changing color. Otherwise, just repeat the two-row repeat.
Please show how to decrease as I am unfamiliar with hat knitting in this pattern.
The details for making this hat and scarf are all in the pattern, including row-by-row details for decreasing the top of the hat: verypink.com/2018/01/17/fishermans-rib-hat-scarf-set/
This has always been one of my favorite stitches!
Very nice pattern. Do you prefer short or longer tips when knitting with 16 inch circulars?
I use the tips from a 16" interchangeable set, and they are shorter. Most longer tips (made for 24" or longer circulars) are too long for the short cords.
I agree. I do the same. I was just curious as to your preference. Thanks for your prompt response.
Hi! How do you avoid the jog when changing colours?
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/Dzvxz8t-uHw/v-deo.html
Aren’t you adding stitches each time you do a one below?
No...because you're knitting below the stitch INSTEAD of knitting the loop on the needle. So your stitch count should not change.
Does this stitch differ from the Half Fisherman rib?
I haven't heard of half fisherman rib...I would imagine it is different.
@@verypinkknits Thanks! I'll have to take a closer look at my pattern which asks for a 1/2 fisherman's rib and compare it with yours.
Is there going to be a jog in the changing of colors????
Nope - just follow the pattern, no need to do any correction.
Can you please walk us through this cast on or refer me to that video, thank you
Sure - here you go: ua-cam.com/video/iHZy0-tXUtU/v-deo.html
