Enjoy guys :) I've linked some related vids in the description if you fancy delving a little deeper with this. Here’s the curves video ua-cam.com/video/wVF3UqTR9Tg/v-deo.html
Hey, I felt like I had to drop a comment ! Just found out about you like a week ago, and I'm pretty amazed by the top quality of your videos, the clarity in your explanations but also and especially by your peacefulness, which almost feels like a blessing. Subbed, can't wait to keep going with you !
Another super informative and well-done video, Harv! As someone still very amateur I really appreciate all the side-by-sides and explicit pointing out of things to watch out for. It's helping me develop my eye and my knowledge of what to look out for. Please, please, please do a video on curves! Thanks so much, Harv. Huge help. Thanks for helping me slowly get better at video.
People may say that s-log is pointless for 8-bit, but for Sony Alpha cameras in particular, the S-log profiles have the least amount of in-camera noise reduction. This translates to less ghosting artifacts from noise reduction, so that alone could be worth it. It get's you more luminance dynamic range even with 8-bit, just don't go crazy on the coloring.
I always make sure when shot log profile, need to know a total lighting, exposure, weather, and display histogram on camera, and this tips get more input knowldege. Thank you man
I think a great tip also, is tricking the camera into staying in +2.0 exposure. When you manually set your ISO while in S-LOG, Sony automatically sets exposure. When you set ISO to auto, you can manually set your exposure. So for clean footage, manually set your minimum ISO and maximum ISO (under auto) to the same number. For example -- I set my minimum to 800 and maximum to 800. This way I can set exposure to +2.0 (without it ever changing) and the ISO will sit still at 800.Thanks for the video, great tips. Good luck everyone!
Very good video explaining the topic. Too many UA-camr talk about log files assuming viewer already have some understanding on that. I am a photographer who’s starting to do some video shooting. And my knowledge on log files has been like bits and pieces with a lot other information sources. Your explanation is so much better than a lot of other similar videos! Bravo.
Thx for this video. First time this year shooting with an FS5 and S-log. I always shoot with Varicam camera's with V-log. Or shoulder type Sony XDcam camera's. This helped out me out so much. Didn't really know anything about S-log till now. Thx again.
I'm looking at buying a Sony AX700 and this video has been really useful thanks. Also love that it is a negativity free zone, wish more places were, both on the web and in the real world.
Wow!! You solved my ongoing mystery!! I didn't connect the two together, Hi speed shooting with slog2 killed my shadows and I couldn't figure out whats wrong with my exposure instead!! Oh gosh! Thank you so much for explaining that!
Harv, you are the man. You have made the best explanation EVER for these settings in the Sony. I have a big job in a few days and have been wresting mentally if I should use log or not, or just use nothing. And the 120 fps examples really nailed it. Thanks a million and I'm looking forward to watching all of your other vids. Cheers from Florida!!
amazing and super helpful video! I realized not long ago that curves was the way to go when you wanna add contrast, indeed results in a richer sort of contrast. Would love to see that video on curves!
"(look at the difference between the different schemes on this lovely color river scene, 4 types side by side)" Looks about the same to me. "(right side of this face portrait is SO much more 3 dimentional and better)" Looks about the same to me. Some times I prefer how the left side looks though :D (edit: fyi I'm watching this on a laptop 1080p HD, not a cellphone or something dumb) I appreciate you taking the time to explain this stuff though. Good knowlege to have, man !
Awesome Video Thank You, Yes a video on how you use curve will be great. I always run into trouble when shooting and grading Slog footage, and you did explain it really well, Thank You.
Thank you so much. This is exactly the information I was looking for for days! Just as a sidenote...Maybe I didn’t quite get what you were talking about, but when you say „aliasing“ I think you mean banding or artefacting. Aliasing is a stairs-effect along edges caused by low resolution
Hmm, I shoot in 120fps a lot, and had lots of trouble with the grade in my most recent video project. Good to know, I'll just use the standard profile from now on!
Great work as always bro. Thank you. I saw the LUT pack you recommended in your video descriptions I watched their promo video for their newest pack at least and didn’t see anything about a Rec 709 lut, where would you recommend I find that?
Cole DeRuse I would also like to know the 709 lut. The ones I have used seem to be designed with underexposed slog in mind... if it doesnt look great upon application without tweaking, I know it's doing more harm than good.
Yo man I make music videos and some commercials freelancing. This video was super useful. So happy to be using Slog. glad to find your channel! i subbed!
My friend I love your channel ❤️ I have a question? Can you tell me how to deal with Cine 4 - S-gamut.cine in davinci resolve color space transform, there is no ready option. Thank you in advance!
Hmm that’s tricky, cine4 and sgamut3cine really weren’t designed to be used together. I don’t use resolve but is it possible to transform just the colour space without touching the gamma?
I've found that following the meter and overexposing my Cine2 profile by 1/2 to 2/3 of a stop gives me a near perfect (for me) SLOG2 exposure when I switch profiles. May not help everyone, but I think it's worth a shot if you have to shoot by eye like I do, even if you shoot 8-bit. (I use an A7III, so I'm stuck with that.)
Thanks for the good video, Harv. Just a quick note to anyone that if you use resolve you MIGHT want to use Resolves Color Management tool instead of LUTs. Avery Peck has a good video on the Resolve Color Management and SLOG and highly recommend it to anyone shooting in SLOG and using resolve.
Just watched Avery's video on that the other day. Just throwing a LUT onto S-LOG without Rec.709 conversion doesn't seem like a great idea, after watching Avery's video.
I am new to the photography/video game so any videos for helping me to understand how color grading / curves/ LUTS work would be great. I really enjoy your videos keep them coming.
Dude thank you so much. I just started using the a7iii like 4 days ago, did my own little comparison, and with indoor light and colors, S-LOG 3 outperformed S-LOG 2 and HLG IMO by FAR. Outside though was a different story and I didn't have the best of luck, but i will use the info i have now and continue getting it right. Thanks again!
Thanks for your helpful tips! I just purchased the a7sIII. The Slog3 base ISO is 640. Can you use low ISO like 100? Let's say is a sunny day and you don't have an ND filter.
You absolutely can but it’s really not a good idea, in my testing I found you lose quite a bit of dynamic range and overall the image quality suffers. Less than ISO 640 is exactly like lowering your exposure in post, I’d rather close my aperture slightly before using the extended low ISOs👍🏻
Would you recommend using Slog 2 or 3 for say an indoor theater music concert with medium to bright amber and colored stage lighting? If not, which profile would be better?
So helpful, even in 2021 a couple years later. Do you have another video on straying from native/dual native ISO? I'm unsure how far exactly I can stray (in a real world run and gun setting with NO grey card)!
Many thanks, I did a video about using the a7s3 in low light vs the a7s2 and another one about how to expose slog3 on the a7s3. Hopefully the answers are there 🤞🏻
@@HarvVideoAudioStuff not sure if I watched them all but I will plan on it. What do you set your zebras at? Do you explain lower limit etc? I still don’t quite get that. I have my a7siii zebras set to lower limit 94+ and not sure why other than another UA-camr told me to haha

amuse|workshop, doesn’t the S-log automatically bump your ISO to 1600?
on some Sony cameras yes. Some are able to bump up it only to 800 for a slightly cleaner s-log image.
The curves vs. contrast thing was a real revelation for me, since I always used contrast and sometimes the result felt a tad too flat for me.
