As someone who already knows all this stuff... This is SO GOOD! Seems like so many people are explaining Log in a way that creates more confusion, then also telling them, "just add saturation and contrast." It's refreshing that you made such a clear and complete tutorial on Log!
I've watched countless hours of video to try to understand SLog3, and this is by far the best tutorial I've come across! You answered so many of the questions I had, and also questions I didn't know I should be asking. Thank you so much!
NAILED IT!!!! I'm a self taught videographer and photographer and you literally made me understand everything like I was a 5 year old. Super grateful!!!!! This video was super informative. Can't wait to start shooting in Log

You taught us how to find the correct zebra level for our camera and our pp 3. Explained in a layman way of all the nitty-gritty on log profiles which basically would apply to any camera capable of shooting log. Thank you for doing this wonderful work hope you achieve what you desire. Peace ✌

So thankyou very much for the detail you have included for someone like me that has absolutely no idea what I am doing. So much to learn and practice. You have just fixed for me a major issue I was having with SLOG3 color grading and exposure. After watching your Video, I purchased Cinematch .. and OMG .. it is PERFECT. I spent hours applying it over my previous conversion LUTs from Sony and other Companies, and this is SO good and much easier to get my footage looking the way I have always wanted. I can't thank you enough !!!
@@dunnadidit sorry one question on Cinematch. If you use an Atomos Ninja in your setup, what Gamma would I set as the output format inside Cinematch? No worries if you don’t have an Atomos and thanks again awesome video !! Changed everything for me honestly !!!
Prores hq should work just fine and dandy. The atomos “shouldn’t” be adjusting the picture at all, just collecting the data that the camera gives it. So technically, the cinematch plug-in should still work just like it would if you were recording internally.
I mean i knew everything you explained, but the way you explained it is so transparent, perfect for people who're trying to learn more about S-LOG!! Great video

@@craigmawanga8353 S-Log is a gamma profile that compresses the dynamic range of the data captured by the sensor, allowing for more detail to be preserved in highlights and shadows. This data is then adjusted later during editing. In post-production, you can adjust colors, exposure, shadows, highlights, and more. Without using S-Log, you are limited to the dynamic range visible at the time of recording, which is typically around 6-8 stops with an 8-bit codec, which is also what most monitors display by default. When using S-Log, you can adjust different parts of the dynamic range based on the scene. For example, in a night scene, you can recover detail from the shadows and push it into the midtones, while in a very bright scene, you can pull down the highlights into the midtones. Without S-Log, you are largely committed to the exposure settings at the time of recording, with much less flexibility in post-production.
@@craigmawanga8353 Imagine looking at a bright landscape with your eyes squinted: you're able to see both the bright sky and the shadows because your eyes are limiting the extreme brightness and compressing the range of light you're seeing. Later, you open your eyes fully, and the scene becomes more vivid, allowing you to fully appreciate all the details. S-Log works similarly: it compresses the light range from a scene so the camera can capture everything, and in post-production, you can ‘open it up’ to reveal the full range of details in the highlights and shadows.
My man, you just made all of this click for me. I’m a novice at filmmaking and I had bits and pieces of knowledge for shooting in s-log3 but I was never quite sure why, or what it meant to do so. You just made it all make sense and now I know what to do. I was shooting a frontier life festival this past weekend and it was my first time out with my new A7IV and my first time shooting in log. I shot it at 800 iso, 24p, 1/50 shutter speed, with a variable nd filter on my lens. My problem was that I didn’t know if I was exposing it correctly, so I just guessed based on if I thought it looked okay or not. The sun wasn’t helping me see my lcd screen either. But now I know if I use zebras and the histogram, I could probably get pretty good results as long as I can see those items while shooting. So, seriously, THANK YOU! You just changed the way I will do things from here on.
Literally the same as other people have said FINALLY. A video that clearly explains all about slog I’ve seen a lot of videos and still left unclear But this video makes me feel ready to go out and know what I have to do , we’ll done
Hands down the best video on S-Log. I’ve watched tons of videos and this simplifies it, but doesn’t lack detail. I started shooting video for clients a couple of years ago. I’ve been avoiding shooting S-Log because of the exposure and editing difficulties and for fear of messing up the shoot. I’ve tried several other profiles, but with real estate being my main subject, I need the best dynamic range, so I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and get on with it. This video has really given me the confidence to do it. Thanks!
I've been struggling so hard with getting into the in's and out's of LOG in general. You helped me sooooo much in my understanding and comprehension. This stuff can be very intimidating straying away from standard picture profiles. So thanks for helping me jump in full force!! 🙏 Great content man.
Shot my Videos before in LOG, but without realy understanding how to professional deal with it. I realy love your Videos, their are so easy to understand, funny and i like the look of your videos. Keep going :D
Just started with my FX30, and wanted to know all the things you've mentioned in this video. I'm going to be doing a lot of low light (nightclub environments) video work, and want to make sure I understand how (and when!) to use SLog3. This was amazingly easy to understand and follow. I'll be coming back for more info. Thanks Dunna!
Great overview. Have you considered creating a series of videos on this topic, each a deeper dive into one particular area? Scopes, color grading, 3rd party LUTs.
I was so used to being filmed for the 2 documentaries about my rare and terminal illness that I got brave enough to buy my own camera (which I call Augie) I admit I am still a complete newbie, but liked the way you explained it. Thank You. Austin Crawford
Man this is very well done. I’ve been feeling so overwhelmed lately man. Being a beginner and learning as much as I can I’ve been scared of slog. Not only did this video chill me out with the awesome music, but it was very informative my guy. Thank you so much!!!
When you deliberately over expose and introduce clipping so that you can properly expose your subject (e.g. your face in front of the window), how did you determine the exposure level for your face? You mentioned that knowing all of the tools and when to use them would help you in this situation, but which tool did you use? ETTR wouldn't work, Zebras wouldn't work (not the ones configured to S-Log3 anyway) and the Gamma Assist would just be eyeballing it, right? How would you accurately expose your face in S-Log 3 in that scenario?
This is a friggin GREAT question. 2 ways... 1. You can use the gamma assist or LUT feature depending on which camera you're using and dial things in to taste. This is the less technical way, but it's quick and easy and gets the job done. 2. You actually can use zebras to get the skin tones. Sony Cine suggests skin tones between 48-52% exposure which should give you skin tones of between 55-65% after a rec709 conversion. So in this situation, you could set a zebra range and set it to 50+/_ 2 and then expose for the skin tones. (This is all for S-LOG 3 based on this article - sonycine.com/articles/how-correctly-expose-s-log3---a7s-iii---fx3---fx6---fx9/ ) Hope that helps!
Thanks Dunna, I'm an experienced photographer used to shooting in raw but a video newbie. Your vid gives me a good basic overview to start shooting in S-Log, without confusing the concept with lots of tech info. I had a basic grasp of why I should use log, but thus far had never ventured beyond using S-Cinetone. I just never quite got around to understanding the specific settings to use in practice, so this helps demystify things and gives me a base to start growing my practical and theoretical understanding. Things differ slightly from model to model. Picture 'profile 8' isn't shown in the menu on my FX3, but this looks to be set via the 1st menu, 1st sub item (Image Quality/Rec) then 4th lower menu (Log Shooting Settings). I see I can switch off or select between 3 options (Flexible ISO / Cine EI Quick / Cine EI). I know Cine EI just gives ISO options of 800 and 12800 only. This may be a good choice when I better understand it, but I'm going to start experimenting with 'Flexible ISO' and look at grading within DaVinci (something else I need to spend time learning how to use). One general 'thing' I find confusing with Sony menus is a tendency to 'grey options out' and declare something like "This operation or setting not available as follows" then reference one of the earlier settings, already selected, without much (well any) real explanation of the what and why. But I'm slowly getting there.
Thank you so much for this video. I was struggling with shooting in SLOG on my A7III because all my clips had so much noise but this video explains what I was doing wrong. Very helpful and will defnitely try again after this video. Hope this video does well and gets to those who needs it!
@@SilverLiningCinemas pretty much. I underexposed a lot when I shot SLOG for the first time but I took the video's advice and exposed to the right. While it might look bright on the monitor, when converting it with a LUT, there were barely any noise in the clips.

Excellent S-Log explaination. Explaining light capture properly can take you way down a rabbit hole and you did a great job. Most users will never use this shooting mode, but if they want to dip their toes in the image grading waters, at least you explained how deep the water can get. Your video might also help many to understand why movie credits have so many names, most of those individuals are pros at each part of everything you described. Thanks again. Now, are there tools to shoot S-Log in the field, transfer the footage to iPhone15 Pro, color grade, then upload to social media.
YOU SIR ...are a god damn life saver...LOL . I've just bought a very tidy , low hour FS5 , and want t to upgrade my skills from my HXR-NX3 .The gamma assist and Zebra (which I use on the NX3)will make it a lot easier to try S-log. Yes I've said what the F%$k is S-Log , and now I know thanks to your excellent "beginners guide" . As a old "sound guy" , it;s a bit like recording a band and then putting the music through a mixer to bring oout the best sound. Thanks again from Down Under. GRegg 🙂

Your video might also help many to understand why movie credits have so many names, most of those individuals are pros at each part of everything you described. Thanks again. Now, are there tools to shoot S-Log in the field, transfer the footage to iPhone15 Pro, color grade, then upload to social media.
OMG I missed the V-LOG joke in the intro when I watched it for the first time.
I am currently switching to S-LOG so I am happy to learn!
Wow O Wow! Super video, thank you for all the information!!!✌️
Thanks for watching
Incredibly powerful video, tons of knowledge compressed in a way that's easy and quick to understand and apply. SOLID work man.
Thanks so much for the positive feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!
I can't believe this is free, thanks!

I had totally given up on Log footage but I'll give it another go. Thanks Dunna

Great!! Glad to hear it!
This video was amazing!!! Made thing a 100% more clear.
GRegg 🙂
Glad to hear it was helpful!!
GOOD STUFF! I’m a Canon shooter and I’m glad you said “this applies to majority of log footage”. Seems like not a ton of info is out there for Clog but there is a ton for Sony since it’s video first. Thanks for this!
So much effort was put into this video and as a newbie, I appreciate the clear explanation and visual presentation!
I have subscribed to you today, I'm lucky enough to find your video first while looking to learn S-Log, I'm new to this and will start shooting in S-log now and hopefully your channel will help a lot. You are doing a great job.
FINALLY !!!!!!! Thank you so much. Simple but detailed . Thanks bro !
Awesome video. You’re a really great content creator and I always look forward to your newest vids. Keep it up 🤙🏽
I appreciate it!
Best explanation I’ve heard yet! Thanks, just what I needed to start using S-Log. 👍
Great video! The best and clearest I've seen on this topic.
Far the best video on Log. I just hit the like button 15 times just because the video was so so good. (As always) Thanks!
Great video. Very educational. You packed so much useful information into a short video. I've been wondering what all this S-LOG stuff is about, but I didn't want to take a bunch of time going down the UA-cam rabbit hole to figure it out. Thanks!
Glad to hear you say that! I worried I was skipping over too much, but the this was what I thought was the most important stuff
This was very helpful I am new to Sony and recently started using the A7IV For work. I came from Nikon DSLR. Needless to say it’s been a big learning curve for me. I am now a hybrid shooter. And I’ve had a difficult time wrapping my head around S log in general. Thanks for making this video congrats on all of your channel success. Like many others you are an encouragement to a smaller channel like myself.
Man your channel is my new favourite when it comes to these things, it's helped me a lot !!
So incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!
Great information here! I alternate between SLOG3 and SCinetone. These techniques will definitely help me get more out of log profiles.
Nice!
Thank you for this video! Very well explained. Definitely a Video I needed to watch, but did not know how to phrase and search for.
That’s great to hear!
To me this is a landmark video. Thank you Dunna! 🙏🏽
Glad you enjoyed it! You're welcome!
Super helpful, awesome stuff thanks!
Wow! I thought I knew more about S-log, but now I realize I didn't --- as I was so impressed how you explained it so simply! This helped me so much. And you're right, my mother wouldn't want me using words like the bleeps. 😁
Glad to hear you found it helpful!
Great video Dunna. Have been shooting s-log3 for about 6 months now and having this video would have helped me learn it a lot quicker back then 😂😂
I am finding a lot of luck with the Phantom and Victor Laforteza S-log3 LUTs, would definitely recommend anyone to check them out!
finally something simpler and easy to understand! thank you Dunna!
Again, excellent and very practical! Thank you!
Hey man ! Thank you a lot, such a good video . You explained very clear.
Great visual representation.. this is new cool
Thanks!!
amazing videos Dunna, i'm just starting to learn this and yours are the best out there.
I applied all your tips to my Sony A7C thanks for the informative video! Loving the zebra display!
S-log 3 with phantom luts … muuuaaahhh … just love the Arri type look 👀 i get from my A7SIII. Love how the phantom luts produces the sweet skin tones and get rid of the horrible yellowish green skin tones we get from sony cameras.
Great informative video Dunna
