    With so much focus and opinion out there on slog3, it's refreshing to see someone teaching the benefit of alternative options. instead of just providing an opinion you provide a solution. Thanks for keeping it simple, it's the reason I keep coming back Harv. Keep up the great work, I'm learning a lot!

    Hey Harv! Great stuff here! I had a quick clarification (disclaimer: quite the newbie at this gamma coloring stuff). So for exposing to the right, there are essentially 3 ways to do it: increasing aperture, slowing shutter speed, and increasing ISO (as a last resort). Am I getting that right? Also, how does exposure compensation come into play in all this?

    How do you overcome the high iso when using Slog 2? Do you just use a higher F stop? I've always used Cine 2 or 4 for night and day shots cause I can lower my iso to 100 to get less noise.

    • @FalcoII
      @FalcoII 7 років тому +1

      My guess is that it relates to the "S-curve" as when you adjust the curves to S-like shape to get some contrast to your lut footage. Here it seems to do the same but instead of manual control over the curve, it's just slider.
      It seems that just the initial S curve helps harv with the modifications he does after

    Can I please ask how can I understand the out applied for slog2 to rec 709 is color or not? I want to learn to be able to distinguish truly why some say when the footage shaven't been processed / interpreted properly.
    E.g I'm using sony a7sii and atomos ninja blade, slog2 from both side and I wonder if the footages should look the same or there should be color differences? I downloaded the slog2 to rec709 lut and apply on the one from my ninja blade and they are still having different readings and colors, I hope you can help me out a bit here, I'm kinda lost.

    I shot with slog2 for the first time a while ago and was not completely satisfied with the results, some of the scenes where shot in low light so I got some noise in my shots (I think I under-exposed, live and learn) but next time I use it I'll learn more about how to use the histogram and use it :)
    Question! What is your second favorite PP besides Slog2? I've seen a lot of people using Cine2 with similar looking results as in Slog2. And if you could answer why that PP, and how do you expose it correctly (since Slog2 needs to be over exposed)

    Hi! i have been trying to use all of these tips for quite a while now, but the problem is two stops above to my naked eye doesnt yet hit 107 zebras.... so i dont know which to trust more; bump it up to 107 zebras and then just down until there is no clipping (and make sure my metre is all in the midtones and above), or to use my eye on the screen of what i see. im really worried ive been over exposing my footage (although i make it so theres no zebras - but only just). 4K, FS5. TIPS?!??!!! Thanks!

    I have been using Premiere for grading Slog2 footage shot on my A7M3. I have been running into recurring color posterizing especially when bringing in saturation into skin tones. Basically looks like patchy colors and grays. I have been using sony's default Picture profile 7 as suggested by many shooters (its basically Slog2 with no adjustments to saturation, phase, knee etc.) Some users say to use a pure 32bit editor such as Davinci resolve, FPX or After Effects. However, I 've only tried AE and Premiere, both with no real resoultion to this. Others point to the limitations of 8bit 4:2:0. But I'm surprised at the real lack of smooth skin tones, almost unusable. (I have indeed been shooting overexposed to the right about 2 stops) Any ideas?

    • @NickLoera
      @NickLoera 2 роки тому +1

      I had this same problem! You can make 1 adjustment to your Picture Profile 7 settings to help fix this. Within PP7, increase the saturation from 0 to around 24-32. Increasing the in-camera saturation will help reduce those blotchy colors and make for an easier color grade. Keep in mind that if you add a LUT over this modified s-log2 footage, you may need to dial back the saturation in post.

    Harv! Would you suggest keeping the ISO at 1600 when shooting SLog 2? The minimum ISO for the a6500 is 800 for SLog 2, so I was curious if keeping it at 800 while exposing 2 stops over would help get rid of noise.

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff

I've been using the metering system in the bottom middle of the camera for the past year but after watching your videos I'm looking to make a more accurate switch to using the Histogram when shooting slog2. What should I be looking for when reading the Histogram to nail proper exposure/overexposure when dealing with slog2? Thanks!

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff

    Today when I was going for a walk in a forest near where I live, I just tried to capture videos in Cine 2 and Slog 2 for the sake of having a comparison on my own.
    What I noticed was: It is much easier to work with Cine2, while Slog 2 gave me really nice results in terms of highlights and balance between shadow/highlight areas. The editing was indeed kind of a gamble, you need a more precise and advanced software to really bring out its maximum. I did it in iMovie (which is really sufficient for Cine profiles and light editing), and while it was possible, you would surely want more control over the amount of, let's say, contrast that you add, not just a slider without any values that covers 5 parameters in one.
    The results .. well, I actually liked the results with Slog more, however I am not really sure about how far I have to go to the right in order to not end up with a too dark/flat/greyish image. I have been somewhere between +0,7 and +1,7 EV and what I felt like was that it is beneficial to rather do 1-2 steps more of exposure (around +1,3).

    The concept of how one should expose slog2 is simple. But the application of it is not. zebras and the built in meter is truly not adequate for proper expose. It's a good guess, but it's not accurate. You need a monitor with a proper waveform to expose precisely. And you certainly cannot do it by eye.
    Slog2 needs to be overexposed anywhere from 1 to 2 full stops as the gamma is designed to be. The latitude exploited for slog2 is in the highlights. The shadow details is sacrified for expanded range in the mids and highlights. If you have a waveform available your skintones will be in the 60-70 IRE range. The worst possible things to do is underexpose slog2. never underexpose it. you lose all the benefits of the gamma curve. Anything above 85-90IRE is irrecoverably lost as you're falling outside of the capabilities of the sensor and 8bit. The difficulty is that slog2 is a curve with 3 different shapes. Shadows (nearly flat), midtones (approaching linear), and highlights (very logarithmic) all have a different shape.
    Hence proper exposure mean grading it is also a challenge as well. the best way to grade slog2 is to begin with a proper slog2 to Rec709 conversion LUT, not a stylistic LUT. once that is done you can make minor tweaks to the shadows, midtones, and highlights separately. Along the way (in resolve) you may need to adjust the intensity of the conversion LUT.
    I highly recommend having a look at Alister Chapman's introduction to the FS5 to get a much better understanding of it than I can provide. Also slog3 is absolutely brilliant on the a7s ii, BUT exposure for it is quite different than SLOG2.

    What method or type of metering are you using to determine a 2 stop over exposure in that high contrast outdoor shot?

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  7 років тому

      +Christopher Cox no metering, as I used different shutter speeds to change exposure it's very easy to work out

      Thank you for your reply. I should have worded my question differently. How did you measure the exposure before you raised it by two stops? There's many ways to gauge exposure, and in high contrast scenes it becomes even more of an art. Often we have to choose which part of the frame to expose properly. Zebras will tell us how much detail we'll lose in the sky, but they won't tell us anything about the rest of the frame. A histogram will tell us something in the frame is clipping, but not what. A "good" histogram would result in an underexposed foreground, because the reading would be too influenced by the sky behind. I'm curious how you got around that problem?

      +Christopher Cox I don't think I said I was two stops over, but you're right it is a bit of an art and takes practice. In slog2 I feel like it's best to use the histogram to expose the shadows up to around 25-30%, i find it really pretty tricky to clip highlights. I should've said I also (almost) always use false colour, tells you everything you need to know :)

      I was going to ask if you used a monitor with false colour (but my comment was getting somewhat lengthy). That tool is very useful for high contrast shots.

    Why did you shoot a day exterior at 1,600 iso? Is 1,600 the lowest iso S-log 2 will allow?

    are you using ND filter on the test you did ?

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff

      +Solleh Zarady no nd, I used shutter speed to alter exposure so that there's no colour weirdness :)

    Hi Harv,
    So in basic terms, Slog2 is for outdoors and Slog3 is for indoors?... I really have this difficulty working with the noise that provides each of them with the shadows... (I have the FS7) ... Awesome video by the way...:)

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  7 років тому

      +Sergio Paz I really don't tend to use slog3 at all anymore, I might do if I had an fs7 tho :) I'd be really curious how the slog3 differs between the fs7 and a7s2

      Well, these couple of weeks I have been trying to use de slog3, But I manage to control the noise using the gamma in the camera, and of course putting a LUT in the monitor to see all the contrasts and shadows, but still has a little bit of a noise problem in it... Im gonna try next week using a plug in to clean it up...To be honest, I find my way easer to work with the custom mode due to the post...But I´ll keep trying..!!! Thanks a lot Harv... Learned a lot from your videos..!!!

    I have a feeling that SLOG 2 is gonna become my favorite profile too... I shot with it for the first time the other day and on some test frames I just applied 3rd party Slog2 to Rec709 LUT and without any other tweaks the footage looked much-much better than my usual shots. I'm gonna have to try and edit the full footage from that day to make my final decisions.

    Please do a video on ETTR for slog 3 and exposing with zebras.

      +Abhinav Joshua many thanks, did you see the exposing slog3 video I did previously? Might be what you're looking for as I definitely ETTR :) I find zebras pretty useless with any kind of log profile

      +sepeliova1 hmm that's really odd, the only time it should limit your base ISO is when you're in 100/120fps modes. I can't think what else it could be, may be worth contacting Sony

    Gotta ask you this, how to expose keeping the same ISO? And im guessing you'r using the same shutter speed.

    • @DevonFlair
      @DevonFlair 7 років тому

      Moriael Bandeira I noticed that too. Dramatic changes by presumably changing just the aperture (but no noticeable depth of field adjustment...?!) so must have adjusted SS too??

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  7 років тому +2

      +Moriael Bandeira I actually changed just the shutter speed as I wanted to keep the same dof, if I use ISO there are odd colour shifts etc :)

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  7 років тому

      +Devon Flair shutter speed is correct :)

      Harv Video/Audio Stuff Interesting! I've not been too shy changing my ss on video (though try to keep to the 2x rule where possible) - so where do you stand on that rule? People get really funny about it like it's an 'absolute' in videography...?

    • @carlosmalache
      @carlosmalache 7 років тому +1

      I like to keep the shutterspeed as close to the 180 degree rule as possible to avoid any disruptions to the motion blur I'm going for. Because of this, I usually pop a neutral density filter on if I need a darker exposure.
