Oh and just to clarify... I have heard of George. He was mentioned on a metal podcast I did. I just hadn't HEARD George.
Thanks for watching, subbing, liking and commenting!
I saw in one Jazz drummer reaction that he is using push - pull technique.
I am pleased to watch your videos from Russia. Thank you! Subscribed!
You just watch one of the primordial drumer of de extreme Metal drummers. Check up his age.... omg old times! :D
Check out Nils Fjellström from Dark Funeral.
Another beast in human form.
@@ozzlayer if u didnt check all the reactions of this drum teacher - then do it.Ull be surprised what YOU may find there..........
Fun fact: all instruments you hear in this song (including vocals that are not here but are on disc version) are played, recorded and mixed by him. A true solo album. It's absolutely insane!😁
That's insanely impressive
@@AndrewRooneyDrums It's called Invictus.
The insane kick speed when he went on one foot was got me... jaw dropping!
That's not true bro, this album is the result of the genius of GK and many musicians.
The guitare solo of this song is played by the guitarist of Rotting Christ !
@@hunkwilliam9755 if a solo is played by someone else then it's in the titles as feature, same with a few tracks with alternative vocals done by someone else as a guest appearance. BUT if title doesn't say anything about a guest performance in the title, it's done 100% by George.
@@Podcir "On 'Invictus', the debut album of George Kollias of NILE, the Greek drum progeny unleashes a crushing death metal assault featuring his work across all instruments and guest spots from members of NILE, ROTTING CHRIST, FIREWIND + more. This is classic, timeless death metal."
All is noticed on her official bandcamp and on the label Season of Mist !
That moment he realized Kolias was only using one foot for the blast was absolute gold
Never fail to make laugh
Lol Im stoned and laughed so hard at that part
You prob would’ve laughed either way.
dude i laughed for like 10 mins
I almost choked on a pistachio!
Beast mode activated.
I worked several shows for Nile. George never opens his eyes....its fucking insane.
HAHA Wow!
In the flow state
Keep lying ...it makes you better
@@panzerwaffen2873 ok? Not sure why I would lie about that but whatever.
@@jamesnagel6264 lmao liar
@@panzerwaffen2873 the last show for Nile I worked was at the Marquee in Tulsa, Ok. It is now the Vanguard down from Historic Cains ballroom. Seems like a silly thing to lie about.
He also played the guitar and bass on that recording. Dudes a beast.
That's insane
George Kollias is to "Drummer reacts" as Jinjer is to "Vocal Coach reacts".
George Kollias is one of the OGs of this ridiculous breed of death metal/tech death drummer. For many of my generation (I'm 29) George was probably our first introduction to truly "fast" drumming. We'd be happily watching some Kerrang TV in 2005, thinking Joey Jordison is the fastest drummer alive, then suddenly Sacrifice Unto Sebek comes on, and your whole world shifts. I guarantee you, people like Alex Rudinger grew up listening to this guy.
Pretty much spot on mate 😂 that and Sarcophagus.
Yes. Him and Derek Roddy.
@@coal_91 Flo Mournier
You youngins. Dave Lombardo, Pete Sandoval, Gene Hoglan. Jordison, pfft.
@@HabAnagarek Joey was probably the most obviously skilled mainstream drummer at the time. Well, maybe Danny Carey and Carter Beauford too.
No matter what, he had serious chops. Sure, if you start moving away from the mainstream you find other guys just as talented or more so, but he broke through to the general public, which is no small feat.
And its not like he couldn't play or wasn't pretty fast. Like say, Lars. Joey's stuff still is tasty even when you discover those other drummers.
You've never heard GEORGE KOLLIAS??? He played drums on my 2nd solo album 'This Burden Is Mine' and he's one of the most incredible drummers on the planet and an incredible human being too!
Wow that's cool you got him on the album!
Wow that is incredible he played for your album. Tell us some stories!
I share the stage with his band and later in 2008 I was on tour with him in America and from 2010 I became his Italian promoter for clinic, Masterclass, workshop drum camp in Italy and from 2016 the annual one in Greece on summer, next will be done in 30 May 2021
@@stevus23 it was all done remotely, I sent him the songs and he recorded and sent everything back. It was pretty standard. Wish I could have jammed with him and stuff but maybe someday.
@@Demonstealer ah damn man, still super cool but
YES that single pedal footwork is insanity
Yes!
With two beaters it's not difficult.
@@UltraCasualPenguin He's using single beaters on each bass drum. I'm not even aware of a setup where one pedal controls two beaters.
Its not a new technique. Pete Sandoval has used high speed single-foot blasts for decades.
The best part is he feels the groove and plays with his eyes closed.
Greek God
YES! He is so fluid and effortless and heavily invested in the groove, no matter how hard he plays the shit out of his kit. That's what it's all about and hard to do no matter what style you play.
"forget about technique and start practicing, just practice" - that's actually very good advice. There's this amazing 1 hour video of Derrick Roddy on the Drumeo YT channel where he essentially says the same thing. That unless you start practicing and pushing your body you won't discover what the right technique is for you.
Yes you need somewhere to start from. Technique is secondary for me.
Get something happening first otherwise you can't discover the best path.
And here i am surprised no one recommend Derek Roddy yet. He is also fun to watch
Oh yeah if you're wondering; I've seen him play live here in Melbourne and he sustained this speed and power for a 90 minute set and still looked like he barely broke a sweat at the end of it.
I saw him playing this week . My sons band is on your with Nile at the moment. This dude is unbelievably talented. My mind was blown.
Great stuff Joe!
He also plays jazz like a boss, there's at least two good videos of him playing this genre.
"..George Kollias is an absolute weapon.." Exactly!! Love it!! Been waiting a long time for some one to react to this video. He is a complete savage!!
F**kin hell!!! I am so completely mind blown, I have never heard of this guy but WOW he is so damn good! 🤘🤘
GEORGE KOLLIAS is the best out there! He is a beast!
for Extreme Metal, George is basically the benchmark. His work in Tech Death band Nile, is some of the most relentless and brutal shit to ever grace this scorched earth \m/
Don't forget about the Atomic Clock!
LOts of influence from morbid angel too..
“Magic happens when you practice, kids”
Kollias proceeds BLASTBEATING all over the palce
Yay! You did George! He's just ridiculous. His new project is funky, it's nice to hear him in another context.
There was a time when George could blast beat up to the borderline bpm where the human brain actually can’t distinguish separate hits anymore and the strokes blur into one sound. Insane
Yup I believe it James. CRAZY
My Boy George is an inspiration and influence to many metal drummers. He raised the standard to what it means to be an extreme drummer and everybody looks up and admires the guy. There isn't a single foot blast faster in the business, he made that a trend
Nice one Kain!
Pete Sandoval has been single foot blasting at high speeds for decades. George is, of course, faster, but Pete was the one who started that trend, for sure.
@@blppt I was about to say that as well, good point... the best swivel in the business too. 😎 Starting it though is not the same as making it more widespread i guess. That's why i mentioned GK i suppose 😅
I read this as, Boy George is an inspiration to..." Haha
5:19 - "Magic happens when you practice kids!" ...and George goes on instant blast. Nice one :D
You should check out David Diepold or John Longstreth from Origin. They're both basically machines.

David Diepold has been mentioned a bunch. Hope a Patron picks him soon!
your facial expressions are great. i think that is every drummer the 1st time they hear nile. 1st reaction to just the audio is "they fixed that in the studio . no way that's real let me watch a vid of him really playing this for a laugh" ..HOLY SHIT IT'S REAL
CRAZY!
That song is from George’s solo album. In that album he performed the other instruments and vocals as well. If you like you can check also a jazz project he’s participating. Keep up the good work mate! Your videos are killer!
Thanks Vasilis!
welcome
Wow, I knew about the instruments however I was sure that for the vocals he invited Dallas Toller-Wade, due to how similar he sounds. That makes this album even more amazing :)
@@Boskimiszcz007 actually yes, it appears that he can also growl!
The lead guitar on this track is done by George Emmanuel.
Kollias also races motorcycles and is a highly trained well rounded musician. Pretty solid hero to have.
George Fucking Kollias. Dude is an absolute monster. My favorite drummer. Glad you finally checked him out!
His right foot is faster than most drummers that use both feet to go over 200 bpm
This guy is obviously mesmerized by the footwork!!lol
Yeah, Georgie is a monster, a legend. There's a lot of fast dudes out there, but not that many at George's level. Also, Nile is really good death metal and they always had outstanding drummers, like Derek Roddy, Tony Laureano and of course George. Inferno from Behemoth is also worth checking out, he has a very distinct voice in the world of speed freaks. And of course... Jamie!!! You know we're all waiting like... literally all of us!!
Thanks Vivaldo!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Actually the most impressive Kollias video I've seen is the one he does playing Laureano's Nile song "The Blessed Dead" with an annoying click in the background: ua-cam.com/video/6VpJAUWdeAU/v-deo.html
Sidenote : do you guys catch the fact that George sometimes applies the swivel technique with his left hand while blasting, alternating between German and French grip ? Watch closely.... 05:25 - 05:40
Yup! I re watched this video today. Lot's of hand stuff to unpack.
A real tech machine this man
I love George's playing because it's so musical. Yes, it's super fast in this context, but the fills cascade and work to make the songs have a flow that's constantly shifting. He definitely has his own take on the genre and I love his style.
Kollias is a purist. Two foot blast beats are considered as “cheating” in some circles. Kollias prefers only to do single foot blast beats.
But he does use two beaters per pedal.
@@UltraCasualPenguin ? No he doesn't? He uses regular singles on two kick drums
George can blast at 280 bpm with one foot, there's a video showing him going from 260 bpm to 280 and it's crazy fun. He was also a teacher at Athens Conservatory, so he has an academic background in many genres. There is a video of him saying that he went to many orthopedics with his pedals, and tried to find the best way to play fast without him destroying his feet.
I saw him play this speed for 2.5 hours on Nile's 25th anniversary tour. Dude is a machine. IIRC he has the beaters all the way back with as much tension as possible. Someone compared it to stepping on concrete.
That's totally correct about the beaters and tension, he explains it in one of his videos. Was Dallas in the 25th anniversary tour?
@@aggelakas St. Pete FL
Derek roddy is another monster player in this kind of wheelhouse. He was up for the dream theater position along with mangini etc.
Yes need to get to him!
So I saw the george kolias video first, then In the recommend thingy underneath I see your video first, I click on it knowing who george is and how good he is. I've followed Nile since they're early days. And watching this guy see george play and seeing his enjoyment of drumming at some of its finest levels was a joy for me. I'm a drummer myself and when I first saw/heard nile I bout lost it...
The older I get the more I appreciate guys like this having insane speed and skill, but find myself liking the absolute groove and creativity of guys like Matt Halpern and Anup Sastry.
Martin Lopez is my favorite Opeth drummer for this very reason. Axe is more technically skilled and faster, but he just doesn't have the groove or feel that Lopez had. Agreed.
The DVD that this video comes from (George Kollias Extreme Metal Drumming) really changed the way I approached drumming. For instance he talks about quarter note kick drives in fills to make it sound more impactful and help keep timing. It was honestly something I never thought of and after a while started playing with the idea of kicks/cymbal accents in fills outside of just quarter notes. I highly recommend the DVD to all drummers not just metal drummers.
Fantastic info. Thanks!
first drum coach I ever had(from a metalcore band circa2000) gave me some awesome beginner advice: always have a kick stroke under any single cymbal hits. Its extremely obvious now for emphasis, but when I was an idiot it was helpful.
He melted your face right off!
YUP!
Still the best reaction video from Andrew Rooney. I always come back to this one. 😂
Thanks so much Jess! lol
I toured for 2 years with George and Nile. He takes his craft very serious and is known by any who is anyone in the Death Metal scene. Listen to any Nile song and your mind will expand!! Metal!!!
In one of your previous you were wondering about the sustainability of these extreme metal drummers. Well this guy has been doing it officially for over 20 years and he is still blasting like it's the year 2000. Such incredible talent!
Ah yes, the "Single Foot God" GK. Give Kollias a single pedal, and he hill play what other 90% of the drummers can play with a double one.
I pretty good on single foot (heal/toe) pulling off "double bass" sounding beats but what he does is pretty freaking amazing!
He uses duals (two beaters/pedal).
@@UltraCasualPenguin Do you even watch his videos? He can reach insane bmp's using only his right foot, hence the nickname...
@@Compendyum Yes, with two beaters per pedal.
I can also recommend "I, Monarch" by Hate Eternal, with Derek Roddy on drums.
Derek Roddy is a deity
George’s foot technique is actually incredibly unique. I’ve not seen any other drummers use it. But damn it if it doesn’t work him!
That was nuts! It makes my jazz/fusion drumming look like I am a beginner.
Me too!
The single kick actually gave me chills.
George is in multiple bands/projects, i went to see his work with band Nile (oriental technical death metal). Band before them ended and people in the venue all went outside for a smoke and drink. I was about to leave the venue, when this guy went out of backstage and started to tune the drum kit and volume levels.
So i turned back and just listened...
This is his solo album, in which he plays every instrument. But he is also the DRUMMER of NILE. And that BAND is one of the most brutal and unique in the DEATH METAL scene. He is playing on the last six albums for the Band. Every album from that band is AWESOME. \m/
You should check out John Longstreth from Origin. Staring from the abyss drum cam is just something else.
Definitely need to cover John Longstreth at some point!
Surprising to see this was barely reacted to a month ago. I’ve watched this exact video for years now. It never gets old watching George’s insane speed and technical drumming. Your reactions are phenomenal! Cheers.
Cheers Bryan! 🥁🤜
George is beyond AMAZING! The evolution of drumming!
Noticed you mentioned Opeth in today's video on Joey, and came across this doing a search! Nile is my all time favorite Death Metal band! George is INSANE! They usually play places like House of Blues, but the venue they were supposed to play at shut down, so they ended up playing this hole in the wall. I got to witness his work from the side of the stage up close. Will never forget that show. THANKS!
I'm surprised you haven't heard of the guy. Dude's a legend haha. He plays some guitar too and was drummer for Nile (not sure if he left).
No, he's still their drummer.
@@d.k.9431 Awesome
Glad to get to him now!

You should check out his „training“ video. George is one of a kind.
He actually plays guitar, bass, and sing as well!
had a chance to see him live with Nile a few years back, one of his kick pedals broke during the show. He played the rest of the show with one pedal like a champ, I couldn't hear the difference!
Your face man, the look of shock and awe xD ahahahah
Fr tho, George'a one song is the amount of drumming some people have in their entire dyscographies xD in 20 years of career xD
I am going to be seeing George Kollias in concert with Nile in February!🤘😍🤘Really excited about it!
Do not know why people are surprised one has not heard of George K.
There are a gazillion drummers from the jazz world that i do not know. No one is equally invested in everything at the same time.
I believe George has stretched it to the extent when it comes to b.p.m.
At least of the known drummers out there, ...cause there’s always that one kid out there in someone basement outdoing every known artist.
But yeah, George is something of a standard. At least for now.
Yeah that always cracks me up. Whoever is forefront in a genre will seem like a household name/player. Not so.
Thanks for understanding Patrick!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Cheers mate, ....
Their are plenty of faster drummers out there(not in basements btw, also not kids). George is still a legend though.
If you think Kollias has maxed tempo, you should look up Spencer Prewett from Archspire. He has stuff at 350+
@@Lastshadow94 I know the stuff Spencer does. Yes, he is faster .... in short bursts. Yet, .....
I will stop there......
When in comes to changenig the hands for blast beats, it also changes the blast beat. Left hand on snare is traditional blast beat, left being the up beat. Right hand on the snare is mostly used for bomb blast, where right hand is the lead, downbeat 8th played over 16th on kicks.
Thanks Peter!
single kick blasts are always impressive especially at the speeds george plays at
Thanks for doing this video. I had the same reaction when I first saw George live! I enjoyed your reaction as the video progressed lol. As a drummer myself I could relate to your reaction
Proud to be greek 😉 greek gods are 13 plus kollias, happy new year to everyone 😊

Be that as it may guys like george and derrek roddy are awesome artists expanding this art form.they are legit drummers
Isnt it cool how people are capable of some incrediblly cool sh*t. Pretty sure his reaction is the reaction of us all when we first heard this :D impossible footwork

Love David's cover of Conjuring the Dead!
I saw Nile live 11 years ago, and it remains one of my favorite live shows ever. They're nowhere near my favorite band (I'm not really a big tech death guy), but they just had a damn good time with a fair amount of variety by genre standards... and of course, George Kollias was a big part of what made that show special.
Yeah he's just absolutely savage. I knew you were going to say something when it showed his one foot on the blast beads. I think those are clocked at 280 BPM. Ruthless
George a great drummer!
I love your vids I subscribed. Thanks for the fun times can't wait to see more
Thanks for subbing!
George once told me that his doctor had told him that the swivel technique could damage his knees. I hope you are well George. The beast's knees are not hurting!!!
I'm not sure there is a way to play at this speed, constantly touring, and not eventually have health problems.

"The Greek" he's an absolute beast
With Tony Laureano and Derek Roddy, he is one of the drummers that tremendously elevated the level of Death Metal drumming in the 2000's, even though he came a bit later than the 2 others. Crushing speed and power, with impeccable technique, his drumming is just insane.
I know you privilege Patreon picks but a reaction to Kevin Paradis: Sensory Amusia - Pain would be interesting. We can see some flam accents, during blast beats while changing hand. The latest extreme metal drumming video that literally blew my mind.
If there is one extreme metal drummer to rule them all it is John Longstreth. The precision and stamina is just out of this world.
I can't believe you didn't already cover one of his videos.
Ahh, there it was. Excellent! I'm a guitarist but I like your reaction videos a lot. Cheers!
my band band opened for Nile Years ago in Seattle, we held our own the best we could...but Nile destroyed the venue and I was in that mosh pit right when our set was done, couldn't even hear half the songs it was so insane. lol
Aeons of burning galaxies (The drum play through) has always been my favorite of George's
Andrew I've gotta thank you for moments like 3.05, it's bits like this that make your videos that bit more unique, and they're also funny as fuck. 😂👌
HAHA! Glad you dig it Liam :)
Seeing Nile play live is another what the moment as he plays this speed the whole show... The stamina... Good golly
I have a pair of George's signature axis pedals and I actually had him sign the pedal for me at a nile show. He noticed I put skateboard grip tape on my pedal board and casually mentioned that he would probably grind his feet off if he had something abrasive on his pedals because of his foot technique XD
Yeah i remember JoJo Mayer saying he used to put coca cola on his pedals to make them slippery
New to the channel and love the videos! I know this video is old now but I’m gonna throw in my two cents on George Kollias. Dudes been playing since he was 12 or 13 (he’s now 45) and he’s completely self taught. UNREAL. A machine.
That was unbelievably amazing.... holy crapamoley.... incredible
HAHAHA XD your reaction on the first double pedal section was awesome xD
So not only does he slay the drums but dances at the same time...
I’m so relieved when people’s first reaction is laughter, because that’s all I could do after watching this. How can someone think in that type of meter? Amazing.
WOW. I wasn’t sure where the song was gonna go then all of a sudden double bass madness. Amazing stuff. 👌🏻
He wrote all of this material as well and did all the vocals. It's all his stuff aside from some lead guitars. It's an AMAZING album!
