Guys... I'm still speechless.
What a venue. What a band. What a drummer.
And somebody give the mix engineer a Grammy. Absolutely mind blowing.
The same patron has picked another Opeth song so can't wait to get to it!
Thanks for watching guys :) WOW
*Hello Andrew,*
So glad you are introduced to Opeth with "Ghost of Perdition" as it shows all their extremes in "1" song.
I call their sound "Opeth Weather" as the music reflects their album covers, and an Autumn/Fall feel. They are the epitome of "Brvtality meets Beauty".
They started as a Death Metal band in 1995 (which had a bit of influence in "Black Metal"), for the 1st 3 albums, with various members. But even in those earlier days, they had a "progressive" side to them, as well as a "Gothic" tinge, which made them very different than all the other Death Metal bands (Acoustic Guitar intros/interludes or passages, with quiet Piano accents).
For their 4th album "Still Life", the progressive elements were getting more prevalent. And so it went, but always with the Death Metal "Growl" and Clean vocals throughout.
So by "Heritage" (2011), they dropped the "cookie monster vocals" for the melodic, as Singer/Guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt was wanting to move away from Death Metal. Now the band is considered "Prog Metal", but with a retro feel of Deep Purple/Dio-era Rainbow, and Uriah Heep, with tinges of Jazz/Fusion and Rock.
Yes, their Death Metal was not in your typical Death Metal band of the 90's and early 2000's, other bands that utilized the Clean and Rough vocals were Edge of Sanity, Soilwork (with keyboards), Gardenian, Extol, Scar Semmetry and a few others. But nowadays its become almost expected. There are even bands that sound like an Opeth Death Metal "genre", but influencing and inspiring a new sound.
Personal fave albums are; "My Arms, Your Hearse", "Still Life", "Blackwater Park, "Deliverance"/"Damnation", "Ghost Reveries" and "Watershed". I HIGHLY suggest you listen to the albums on headphones while relaxing.
Note: I actually like the "Roundhouse Tapes/Live" version of _Ghost of Perdition_ the best because of Akerfeldt's growl has its full power much like on the album (Ghost Reveries). By the time he did this Red Rocks version, he already had 3 albums under his belt without doing the growls, only live, for the now, "older" songs. And "Peter Lindgren" was the 2nd guitarist and "Per Wiberg" keyboardist/back-up vocalist, and "Martin Lopez" on drums, on that particular album & tour (But Axenrot replaced Lopez on the Roundhouse Tour, I believe while they were working on the album "Watershed").
Btw - the"Lights" were probably a Lighting guys _fingers._ If you find the Lighting Operator for "Meshuggah", you will see that the guy _plays_ the lighting controls like a keyboard! Its amazing to watch.
Now you need to see the previous drummer _Martin Lopez_ (founder of his current band "Soen") and his style of playing performing "Deliverance", or other tracks on the Live video "Lamentations".
you'll see as they go through the albums things stay awesome but in a New/Old way, react to a turning point track like "Famine" and you'll see :)
regarding the lightning-technician: look at the guy from meshuggah: ua-cam.com/video/MiSr8iNwWsw/v-deo.html
For the best Light Operator video, you really need to see "" Meshuggah's light operator (Paris 02/12/2012) ""
You will be BLOW AWAY !
@@mvunit3 Yes, my favorite works were the era of the Martins...The Ghost Reveries DVD has an extra where you can see Martin working on parts for the record and it's insane the level of musicianship this music is not only capable of but capable of driving its performers.
A friend of mine once asked what death metal I liked and the first two bands out of my mouth were Cryptopsy and Opeth...he nodded sagely and replied "Opeth is the Led Zeppelin of Death Metal" and he's still not wrong even though several releases have happened since he asked me that question, that night, in that bar. :-)
PS - Per is fucking hilarious in every B roll scene I've seen him in.
How are the lights synced? I do it all live mate! Well, a lot is programmed, but rythmic figures and stabs are cued by tapping buttons - say as one would play a keyboard! Thanks for a fun video - and the compliment! Best regards, the lighting designer.
Ps. We had NO rehearsals prior to this tour...
Mate, i’d give your fingers 11 out of 10! 😂
Hope you are doing well Magnus! May this situation be over soon so you guys can go out again, stay safe!
Amazing job dude. I have witnessed these legends of music in Dublin last year and it was amazing! Not sure whether you work for the venue itself or for Opeth but either way the lighting is absolutely mesmerising at this gig! Thanks mate 😊
Conor Quinlan I work for Opeth
I love watching people get emotionally overwhelmed when they hear Opeth for the first time
especially when mikael sounds this terrible
@@secerno1987 Jonas renkse from katatonia stopped using growls many years ago, because some doctor (i don't remember very well when and where i read this hhhh), told him that he could loose his vocal cords, if he didn't stop using this kind of singing. So, in opinion (just my thoughts i didn't read it anywhere this time) that's what affect mikael death growls i think, it sounds like he didn't force himself too much when doing that kind of sounds and that's why he used to have better performance in the past.
Yeah i never forgot the disappointment of hearing clean vocals ruining such great songs.
We were all there, at one time, someone said, "DUDE, YOU GOTTA HEAR THIS BAND, OPETH!" and the curtain fell away.😲 no goin' back
@@ratonhnhaketon4365 Mikael certainly did have problems with his voice. Not long after the Progressive Nation tour. He's actually changed his growling style to a more 'proper' technique since then. I damn near ruined his voice with the massive gig runs they were doing in the late 2000's early 2010's.
I disagree with everyone saying Opeth is terrible now he doesn't growl. It's still Opeth and it's still absolutely terrific.
Someone's gonna be turning metalhead pretty soon...
😂👌🥁🤜
We're slowly dragging him over to our side guys!
Everyone is a metalhead. They sometimes just don't know it yet.
@@enlightendbel very true
You really have to boil the frog to get some people into metal
The drummer is Martin Axenrot, he’s a great drummer but you also have to listen to the former drummer before him, Martin Lopez. Lopez wrote and composed this song on drums. Both are sensational drummers.
Opeth are a Swedish progressive metal band now but were a melodic death metal band. They have gotten more to rock sound now, but their earlier stuff had folk and orchestral sounds to it.
I've always preferred Lopez... Just listen to fucking "Deliverance"...
MCMLXXXVII MCMXCVI - ohh I think highly of him too. He added feel to brutal tracks of Opeth.
@@quentondaniels8536 Thank goodness he overcame his personal problems and continues to make excellent music with Soen!
Martin Lopez is my drummer of choice as well. I do think that Axenrot is technically better, but he just lacks that jazzy feel, that sort of swing, the finesse that Lopez added to the mix.
It’s s bit sading that he reacted to this amazing song, but the wrong drummer 😀. Axenrot is amazing drummer, but also a boring one. Everything is the same and he lacks the groove and swing Lopez brought to the table.
"I don't know what kind of genre is this"
It's called Opeth. That's the genre.
the simplest common name would be melodic death, probably.
@@GeorgeTsiros I'd say it's prog metal
Nice. :)
@@GeorgeTsiros nah MeloDeath bands are bands like Arch Enemy, Kalmah, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Wintersun etc...
Opeth is Prog metal with huge Death and Black metal influences. Now turned more into a modern Prog Rock band.
Word
Two more songs by Opeth to check out (for the drums, specifically): _Deliverance_ and _Harlequin Forest_ . You won't reret it!
I'd say Eternal Rains Will Come, the intro itself is crazy.
@bogdan - Agree on that, even though I'm very fond of Martin Lopez, Axenrot is just out of this world.
Up to this ☝🏻
Good suggestions. Opeth is so spread out stylistically that it takes albums and time to see the whole range
Deliverance 👍👍👍
I envy you, hearing opeth for the first time...
Envy!? That's almost 30 years of not enjoying something awesome. I feel terrible for the guy.
Opeth is one of the best bands in the whole world
Correction: is the best band in the whole world
Right up there with Tool IMO.
Top 5
agreed!
Yes. We like to have a couple of those here in Sweden
Opeth makes me happy to be alive.
AMAZING!
Me too! I tell my friends that Opeth has kept me alive in my darkest moments
I talked my reluctant father into seeing Opeth with me. After the show my drunk dad told the whole band over and over how it was the best drumming he's seen since he saw Zeppelin in 1977. I was so embarrassed.
😂 Brilliant
Awesome!
what tour? awesome!
What a compliment!!! Your old man is a legend 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
I played a festival with Opeth back in 2008ish. I got to watch from the side of the stage and when one of their amps died, the drummer and keyboard player gave the crowd 10 minutes of improvised jazz. It was the most mindblowing 10 minutes of my life, the sheer level of talent between them was out of this world!! I'd never heard drumming like it.
Also, backstage, they were the most down-to-earth and humble band I have ever met
P.S. I almost forgot, during this "jazz session" Mikael stood and told jokes over it. Was surreal.
I was at this show. Gojira and Devin Townsend played as well. 3 of my all time favorite bands and the venue is beyond incredible. Will basically be impossible for any show to ever top this one.
That’s a pretty high water mark!
hell yeah! i saw them on that tour too, but my cousin and i drove from pittsburgh to philly to see it because that day they were playing a one-off with mastodon, eagles of death metal, and russian circles. that was the infamous show where brent hinds flipped out on his tech guy and kicked the shit out of his equipment. prob not as cool as seeing them at red rocks (one of my bucket list items to see a show there), but was still fun.
WHAT Gojira was there the same day???
I saw Gojira and Opeth separately, both twice and I was over the moon already! Now all together including Devin Townsend??? DAMN!!! I'm jelly!
Opeth is that 1 band in the whole scene that every musician respects and admires regardless.of the genre they play
I love that this turned into a vocal reaction video. As us Opeth fans knew it would be. Lol
Mind blowing
Opeth has been blowing my mind since 2005 when my 10 year old introduced me to them!
Great stuff Jon!
Check out the entire catalogue of Opeth. You will not be disappointed. They're one of the most amazing bands in the metal scene.
Loving it Spencer! 🙌
Amazing bands, period, any genre.
Man that would be such a freaking amazing lineup
YES! FINALLY, please more Opeth
Hey Thibeau! Yeah the same patron has picked another Opeth 🥁👌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums lucky for us :D
Good reaction. "Axe" is brilliant! But Martin Lopez, Opeth's previous drummer, was truly the soul of the band IMO. His groove and feel were impeccable!... He brought the true jazzy fusion like feel to Opeth's heavy death metal music. Even this very song 'ghost of perdition' was recorded in studio by Lopez. So the drum parts and transitions were all his genius...
You should check out Opeth's live performance of 'Deliverance' at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London, with Lopez. You'll see what I'm talking about hopefully... Cheers!
Arun Mohan - tenfold agree on Lopez
So true. Mr. Lopez's skill, feel & musicianship hasn't been matched or recreated in Opeth. Even the great Gene Hoglan covered the tour for this album and just couldn't handle the fluid complexity. (ua-cam.com/video/dFcQYPCerzQ/v-deo.html) I'm just grateful I got to see the Deliverance tour. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. \m/\m/
Ahahahahah no
Axe is a faaaar superior drummer
@@robertoiorio390 have you heard his drumming for bloodbath?
@@mattnelson7258 Lopez is a metal drummer, very good one, but axe is an all rounder who can play anything with incredible dinamics and skills that Lopez lacks. Every drummer agrees with me on this
Opeths drummers have always had exquisite and huge jazz chops. The band has remarkable taste overall. This song is from a rare beast: a perfect album. Welcome to the Opeth wormhole.....
I still remember the first time I heard Opeth. I was blown away. Like the first time I heard Symphony X or Dream Theater or Hillary Hahn play. Just perfection.
15yrs ago I was in bad depression .. up all night etc., I was surfing U-Tube for new musical inspiration and clicked on Opeth .. OH!! MY .. Since then I've seen tthem 5 times usually with my daughteer (25yrs) - amazing - 'THE Mighty OPETH' .. Thanks for the wonderful Confirmation Bias video .. most heartening .. :-)
Whole "Ghost Reveries" is a masterpiece. Thanks for reminding me Opeth :)
I don’t usually watch reaction videos, but I had the pleasure to attend this show!!
I’ll give you a few facts...
1. Red Rocks is in Denver Colorado. It a a big city, but Opeth normally draws about 2,000 here. One of our promoters had the great idea to put them at Red Rocks and made it happen. I met so many people that flew in from all over the US to see such a legendary band at a legendary venue.
2. It was only about 55F when Opeth took the stage. Concert was early May, and the weather is pretty random.
3. This was my 6th time (now up to 7) seeing Opeth. They always bring something new to the table and change around the set list a lot.
4. The Blu-ray of this is fantastic!
5. The wind kept blowing the haze off the stage, so whoever edited the video also needs a raise, because they made the light job look killer!
6. Check out Gojira live at Red Rocks as well. Same concert! Both bands filmed.
7. Mix engineer David Castillo is amazing. He mixed the Leprous DVD, mixed Whitechapel - The Valley, produced Soilwork’s “The Ride Majestic, and the last two Leprous records, and has done a lot with Katatonia and so many others.
8. Look up URM academy. They actually have a mixing lesson on the first song from this DVD. Castillo gives the lesson himself
Uhh. I’m sure I can think of more. Haha. Ask away.
Awesome info. Thank you!
Opeth started as Swedish Death metal mixed with traditional folk elements. Over time they became more experimental and progressive in their approach. Their newest recordings are more Progressive rock with clean vocals.
I’ve seen them three times. The first time was the Heritage album: Michael sang all clean vocals that show. Second time I saw them it was their 25th anniversary tour; they played an epic song from each album. Third time I saw them, the dirt set was clean vocals and the last set was heavy old stuff. Each show was completely different.
The current Drummer is Martin Axenrot.
They've always been a little prog though. Mikael*😁
They started as a melodic death with prog. Listen to Orchid, the first song is 14 minutes long. They've just dropped the melo-death while keeping the lyrical concepts and expanding on the prog rock as of late. I've seen them probably 8 or 9 times. First time was for Blackwater Park US tour, probably my favorite live band.
The venue is called Red rock. It’s an outdoor venue carved out of the side of a red rock mountain in Colorado. It’s insane
The Red Rocks Amphitheater is the most amazing venue that I have ever seen in person and I've been to hundreds of concerts over the years. Amazing atmosphere and amazing sound.
I live about 35 mins from Red Rocks. Freaking amazing! Best sound I’ve ever heard.
I seen Iron Maiden there on Powerslave tour with German band Accept opening, amazing show,my first concert June 1985.I also seen Rush there much later in 2004,also amazing show. The acoustics at Red Rocks are awesome!
I love Opeth! I think that was the show was with Gojira, some friends of mine were there.
@@dmytrokovchenko6079 Colorado. 20-30 miles or so west of Denver. This show had Devin Townsend Project and Gojira opening. Just awesome.
I was fortunate enough to be sitting right behind the drummer when they played the Sydney Opera House. Absolute best seat in the house
Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals often act like characters within the story of the songs. The growl being the dark character & the clean being the light character, as it were. Or like different voices in a Greek chorus.
Meshuggahs light operator does it live, there's video of it and he basically syncs with the kick in real time. Honorary rhythm member IMO
I was a huge Opeth fan when they were more metal and then when they went more progressive I loved them even more. Musical powerhouse!
Yes Bonnie!
They were progressive as hell when they did metal lol
I also enjoy the whole Opeth spectrum. I feel like they wrote harder and heavier riffs early on but evolved into real songwriting geniuses who can master melody while still inventing really unique and creative licks. One of my favourite bands for sure.
@@PuggetronicsPioneer Yes but he's referring to the albums from Watershed until Sorceress
70's prog rock sound
@@franciscoborjaescobarsuare5802 I got what they meant. I just commented because they said "more progressive." My point was just there to imply that they have always been extremely progressive
Seeing them live is an experience you can't explain
Seeing them on YT is the same!
This album was a masterpiece, can listen to every song over and over again, year after year.
I have toured with Opeth. Their light show is completely run by their lighting designer. No on is on click tracks, not even Martin.
That is completely mindblowing
You just entered the rabbithole of Opeth. The nicest rabbithole you could enter. You've got an extreme lot of exploring to do. Congretulations.
I've already watched this video like 3 times, and I always come back because Rooney's reaction to Ghost of Perdition is exactly the same reaction I had. It's crazy to know how music brings similar feelings to different people around the world, and that's why I love this band so much, they really do some piece of art
These dudes are the godfathers of prog metal. they've been doing their thing since the early 90s and have inspired countless bands in the genre.
You will NOT be disappointed by diving deeper into this band
The smile that’s on your face while you watch/listen is exactly why I listen to Opeth.
Boy.... I loved this.
Genuine new fan
I thought the same! The smile on his face says it all! ❤ proud
I hope to see them live in future…….they‘re absolute fantastic live and what a unique band!!!❤❤❤
I'd love to see these guys live
I was there! Red Rocks is the venue. It sounded just as good live as the DVD mix. It was a duo-headline with Gojira. One of the best - if not the best - show Ive ever had the pleasure to attend.
Also note - it was extremely cold AND very windy. Yet - they still rocked it.
Phenomenal performance
This track gives me the chills. There is something very special and eerie about this record, its hard to put my finger on it, but I feel this is the absolute pinnacle of Opeth. They really captured something here imo.
Yup it's crazy good
Ghost Reveries is masterpiece!
If you like Axe as their drummer you should check out their old one. Martin Lopez. Absolute genius!
Luca Verheyden - agree wholeheartedly. Lopez is awesome.
You probably know, but for all who don't, these drum-parts were all written by Lopez and the fills are mostly his as well. Axel is a great drummer and he executes it perfectly, but credit goes to Lopez.
@@hiasirimias2423 -ohhh I know my friend. Lopez had groove and feel to go with the brutal fills for Opeth. His albums with Opeth are some of my favourites of their catalogue.
Lopez is in Soen now, right? He is amazing. New opeth drummer has some great jazz sound to his playing though. His work on pale communion is crazy good.
@@mpkelley20 - that’s correct, he’s in Soen now. Alexrot is a great drummer too, some just feel Lopez is a little better. The jazz feel did come from Lopez thou, if you hear Damnation album.
Opeth is a whole different animal. That's why their music has stood the test of time.
I feel better about recomending Haken's 1985 now, I was worried a 9 minute song would be too long😂
I know I'm a bit late to the party, but Opeth was the reason I started drumming. My older brother by a year was a bassist and metal enthusiast. He introduced me to the world of metal, but Opeth was something special to me. They were so accessible. They had clean and heavy vocals and drums, with intricate rhythms and heavy double bass. I was a freshman in high school in 2003 when Deliverance came out. I spent the whole year just leaning beats off of their title track, but I was incapable of doing any kind of fill. I was so new that any fill, no matter how simple, would ruin my timing. My older brother gathered some friends to practice Deliverance with us, and I tried my best to keep up. We ended up playing our school's talent show mid 2004, and luckily enough, I didn't screw up (still no fills). I'm sure it just as bad as most people are imagining, but it felt great to us. I still like to jam to the ending riff of Deliverance and I hope you have the chance to hear it. Thank you Andrew for reacting to this. It looks like you thoroughly enjoyed hearing Opeth for the first time. Love the content man, keep it up!
If you like this style of drumming and this style of vocals, you must hear Devin Townsend ‘Kingdom’. I was actually at this Opeth show and Devin Townsend was the opening act
I’m just jealous of that lineup goddamn
@@ajplaysdrums every time I remember this tour happening I get sad 🙁 seeing the DTP, Gojira, and Opeth the same day must've been quite the experience
@@Hellion421 There was another special day on that tour - Philadelphia. They crossed paths with the Mastodon, Russian Circles, and Eagles of Death Metal tour, so decided to do a single joint show. It was great!
Loved this band for years now. They are so talented on every level. I used to watch that Opeth dvd all the time.
This was the first song I ever heard from Opeth. Hooked ever since! Now I’m a massive Opeth fan. Seen them live about 4 times now. Cheers from the Navajo Nation, Arizona.
I bought 20 copies of Ghost Reveries back in 2005 and gave them to all my friends. I knew back then that it was one of the best albums ever recorded. Guess what, I was right. THis album still stands the test of time!
Thank God I stumbled into this before going to sleep and deciding to watch it. I WAS AT THIS SHOW! Man...after watching this, I feel so privileged to have been there. I live pretty close to this venue in Colorado. Red Rocks is world class. Opeth was stunned by it, too; Mikael (the singer) kept saying he hoped they were worthy of it. I’d say he passed the test. I do remember it was cold that night and I was wearing a hoodie. I demanded we stay until they played Deliverance, which - of course - was the last song. Haha... Speaking of “Deliverance” - you must react to that video from the Lamentations DVD/tour (2004 or 2005). I was at that show, too, but they had Martin Lopez on drums - who’s just as good as Martin Axenrot believe it or not. I love Opeth. The talent is off the charts.
great!
Can 100% confirm they play that tight live. One of the best bands I've ever seen live by far.
Awesome job on my name, you actually got it right. I loved your reaction! Best Christmas present! Thank you so much. I think the people in the comments already mentioned enough info about this awesome band, so I'm just gonna sit back and wait for The Devils Orchard. Can't wait tbh, cause it is one of my favorite songs in general. Guys, subscribe to the Petrion if you are able to. It is worth it.
Have a good time and I hope you and your family are safe at these times!
Mikael and opeth as a band are some of the most amazing and talented artist / musicians/ song writers ever . The album Blackwater park blew me away when it was released . Never heard anything like it .
Such a wonderful total mix. Nothing ever overpowers anything else. This song is damned near perfection
Each night I treat myself to music I always return to your channel. I love your content, your personality, your openness and your curiousity. I wished there were more people like you. Always stay safe and healthy, we love you.
Wow! Thank you Gunnar!
Saw them in NYC while in college and they DELIVERED. Ghost of Perdition is such a ride, one of the better opening tracks I’ve heard, sweeping range I still get goosebumps
Singer is unreal at screaming, pure talent
Love it Scott!
Thanks so much for all your hard work with these reactions, really appreciate it. Finally, my favourite band. Would love Harlequin Forest as the next reaction, especially for that tight outro!
Check out porcelain heart for some cool drumming.
They're one of the tightest bands I've seen live. Most metal bands sound muddy or too distorted, Opeth sounds like the album. Incredible level of talent there. Mikael is also hilarious.
When youre too lost in the amazingness of Ghost Of Perdition that you suddenly remember you need to talk about drums ;) love it
YUP! Goddam!!!
Opeth are a band that have constantly changed sounds within their own world of music and are an absolute awe live.
I have seen them plenty of times and always walk away stunned.
There is a big catalogue to discover with them, Damnation being my favorite album.
Martin Axenrot is seriously incredible, some really killer drumming on their album Pale Communion, Eternal Rains Will Comes intro is iconic.
Opeth a swedish band ( progressive metal)....🇸🇪..like your reactions......🍻
You should seem them live, it sounds just like the records, just with higher volumes! Amazing band! Listen to the record Blackwater Park, it'll change your life.
Shout out to the writer of drums for this song Martin Lopez. Both great drummers. Axe plays this so well too.
I saw them twice and I've never listen to a better band live, ever. They sound pristine
Opeth: best band of the last 30 years-ish IMHO. Listen to their whole catalogue, you will be amazed.
it honestly doesn't matter who is performing at Red Rocks, if you can, go there at least once in your life. That venue is magical.
I'd go to an empty stadium there!
Never had the pleasure of seeing them live but, they are masters of melody. From clean to heavy....they have it covered.
I completely agree with you about the band, very impressive. Thank you for introducing me to a group I've never heard of before. I will definitely start listening to these guys....
Hahah I have been to like twenty shows at Red Rocks and ALL the artists who have never played there mention how badass that natural amphitheater is.
INCREDIBLE
Opeth has been one of my favourites for a long time! Proud to be from Sweden just because of this band haha.
I saw them back in 2015 I think it was, it was a smaller kind of pub gig, and til this day I have never heard any better live sound!
The discography is huge, this one is from a little earlier album, and they've changed alot. I love the album Heritage and I think you should check it out, I think you're gonna love it!
Thanks for all the great content!
Stay safe!
I have seen Opeth twice in concert, both in small venues. Amazing shows! The level of skill and musicianship is matched only by the creativity in the songwriting. You will thank yourself if you check out their whole discography. Their music is ever evolving.
SO GOOD!
Andrew becomes a metalhead in 3... 2... 1... 🤯
😂🥁👌
I saw Opeth live back in 2013 at a small venue in Halifax, NS. It was absolutely incredible. I was right in front of the stage. What an experience.
Opeth was one of the first metal bands I got into about, sheesh, 20 years ago. Their dynamics are what drew me in. These guys are legends in the metal world.
Great pick! Axenrot is one of my absolute favorite drummers and I consider him one of our national treasures here in Sweden
He's outstanding
Oddly enough it's my first time hearing them too jeez man good pick and rock on
I was fortunate enough to be at this show. The entire line up (Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, Opeth) was perfect. Everyone was on point and sounded like perfection. One thing a video won't capture is how beautiful the acoustics are at Red Rocks. If there is ever an outdoor venue to see a show at, this is it.
Definitely recommend doing a reaction to Gojiras performance of Pray from this very same night.
When I first heard Opeth I heard the growl and went: "Nope". Year later I went to a random timestamp and realized they aren't just growlers. This song is one of my favorites of any genre.
Yes I love this!
I think Opeth is the only band where I can overlook the growls because their music is so good.
imagine being a student of Andrew. must be the best
HA!
Thank you!
Opeth have some of the best well written music from any genre
Thank you so much Andrew for picking Opeth. Def my favorite metal band of all times. Timeless. One of these albums you can listen to from start to finish.
Opeth can go from brutal to beautiful at the drop of a hat. Live, absolutely stellar. I' prefer the newer, more progressive stuff with clean vocals, but the earlier stuff is incredible as well.
I've been in love with Opeth for around 17 years now. They still give me chills to this day when I listen to them.
Interesting side note as you’re new to Opeth - being from Sweden, English is not mikael’s first language (the singer). A lot of the European metal bands use English because it tends to be more widely known, but also have said it’s easier for lyric writing.
Also please do a reaction to anything from their royal albert hall performance. It’s all killer.
Thanks for that!
The drummer who wrote those licks was Martin Lopez. Dude is a God
I need to get to him!
If you like this try listening to "Eternal Rains will come". It still blows my mind how a single Human being could play drums like that, even after the 100000th time i listen to it. Let's say "it's not quite my tempo" (Unfortunately i doubt there's a live performance of this song to react to but I'm not sure)
There is. I want to say wacken?
Incredible band! So many great records under their belt
I was at that show. I believe the vocals were “repaired” in the final mix.
I wouldn't be surprised, live vocals get a lot of massaging compared to anything else unfortunately
This I can second. My brother and I were there as well. He lowers his head when he growls, resulting in them being more quiet. When he sings, he raises his head to the mic and it was more loud.
I was fortunate enough to be at that show. It was special for sure. I'll never forget it.
Oh wow! I’m jealous
You gotta listen to their "Watershed" album.
Andrew, I've been following your channel for a while now. I love your content and authenticity. I'm not actually a drummer, I'm a guitarist, but I have a fond reverence for the art of drumming. Short story: I live in Colorado and was actually at this show. Opeth is one of my favorite bands (if not my favorite band) of all time, and seeing your enthusiasm, awe, and excitement over this track in particular brought a lot of joy to my heart, especially knowing I was able to be there in that moment, watching them alongside those massive stone archways in the beautiful and amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater. You expressed what I think many Opeth fans felt the first time they heard this song and band. I appreciate what you do, and keep up the good work. Thanks so much.
Oh man, if you're just discovering Opeth you've been missing out. They have such an amazing range. From hard core growling black/death metal to some of the most melodic stuff you've ever heard. I used to rock my kids to sleep the the album Damnation and rock out to Blackwater Park in the car. They also have some of the longest tracks in the world 😆
My friends and I jokingly use the length of Opeth songs as time measurement.
"How long was the drive?"
"5 Opeth songs!"
"whoah....thats a long one"
Man, after all of these months of watching you I have seen the final transformation. You do the "face" when the metal is so good. It is so hard to explain that feeling and that love for that very specific pocket, but I seen it in your face. Remeber, once you're here, you're here forever friend.
You'll never take me alive!!!
You should check out Kai Hahto in "Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars" Live studio session at sonic pump studios. 14 mintues of drum mastery. Kai now plays in the band Nightwish.
He should check out Kai Hahto in Rotten Sound - "Targets". Two minutes of intense blasting!
"Executing simple things at a high level"...Truly the earmark of a great drummer.
That's the golden formula
Opeth are in a league of their own. Been a fan for 20 years but their newest album is - to me - the absolute pinnacle of excellence. The last song on the album ("All things must end" or something. The swedish title is "Allting tar slut") Is some of the best music my ears have ever heard.
Also, Axe, the drummer and Mikael the vocalist have both worked on Bloodbath at different times, a pretty cool "superband" with rotating members, that does old school death metal.
Wait till you hear Opeth with Axe writing the drums too. (This song was written during the first drummer's tenure, Lopez. Great drummer too. But Axe is so much more versatile)
Me too. Been a fan since I first saw them live back in 2001 and they became my favorite band. Seen them live every time they've come to Michigan and a few times out of state. Always amazing.
Brand new fan, Rooney. Excellent content.
I was at this show a few summers ago at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Been a fan of Opeth (and the openers Gojira and Devin Townsend) since high school. I need to share that all three bands absolutely crushed their sets. I’d watch any of them play at any venue if given the chance. I’ll also share that I’d watch almost any band at Red Rocks and have a good time. It’s an incredible experience.
But combine these chops with the venue, you have a truly memorable night. Thrilled the Opeth crew recorded it (insanely well, I might add) to let us all relive it.
Looking forward to more content, amigo!
Hey Garrett!
Glad to have you along for the ride!
Can’t growl until you can sing clean tone beautifully. Every growler has a tremendous singing voice. Chad gray from mudvayne is another great example.
Thanks. I'll check them out Adam!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums they’re quite a unique listen! The drummer is a powerhouse too, not like the superdrummers you’ve been featuring as of late but great at what he does. ‘World So Cold’ is a good example of the vocal range and ‘pharmaecopia’ is a good start for the drums!
Really enjoy your content and when I’m in a bit better spot I’ll send some support. Keep it up! It’s because of people like you and Charles Berthoud that I went out and picked up a bass again. The passion is infectious and made me remember what was important! Thanks mate!
You should see that concert in its full length. Absolutely stunning from start to finish. Insane level of production, musicianship and scene. Though not the best focus on the drums in particular, but the dvd has its moments on that part, too
Welcome to the Opeth catalogue. You have much to learn, young one :)
