John Entwistle really was/is the ultimate Bassist lead Bassist.
Entwistle's sound is like an overdriven piano.
well he wanted his bass to sound like a piano, it's so badass
Rotosound strings
That was really cool. I never knew that Rick had played at all with JE, even for one song. What an awesome collision of talent.
Great drummer
When John does his bass solos you can really see him feel the music
I remember watching this when it was broadcast - I was 12 - I’ve never forgotten seeing John’s jaw-dropping solo and unbelievably it’s actually better than I remembered!
Holy ox!!!, the song had a cool riff and all but that solo was totally unexpected and mindblowing.
Holy shit that entwistle performance is chilling.
But wait, it gets even better!
At 4:07ish, Wakeman is leaning his keyboards into mister-never-flummoxed John Entwistle like a proper immature rock star should! It’s awesome!
"Uhm, Mr. Entwistle I believe these are your speaker cones lying on the floor!"
What’s better than this? Nothing. I can’t believe the world was so cool at one time.
In the pre-Jaco era, my bass heroes were: Glenn Cornick, Jack Bruce, Brush Shiels, Chris Squire, Colin Hodgkinson and of course, John.
After I heard Jaco; although he wasn’t really a rock player, nothing was ever quite the same again in the world of bass guitar, for me. I never took to the slap technique.
Colin Hodgkinson should be the british Jaco ...
Or jaco the US Colin ,,,.
totally underrated unkonw unique player
Tony Levin
Wakeman is awesome, as always...
Entwistle sounds like he's asleep as first and then, Shazam! The Ox explodes with an incredible series of musical statements that are reminiscent of My Generation, only much longer and much more detailed. Really a great clip!
Thanks Rick, this is a gem!
Episode 4 is a total favourite! Steve, and John were BOTH great interviews! ''Go America'' is an awesome little ditty, and of course Wakey is thee _Crown Jewel_ of all that is competent, and attractive! Bless your heart Rick!
I've played bass for the best part of my 67 yrs. When I watch my bass hero John I ask myself why do I bother?
when music was more important than the image
Wakeman singing !
That's the first time I hear that, even background vocals
Amazing musicians
Great show, I never heard of that show before (not living in the UK)
Always great when you stumble across a hidden jem like this.
The keyboards wizard & The Ox performing together..
Woah! The time leap at the end of the vid was/is jarring~ watch out folks
I don't know what else to say but.. damn that was amazing...
Yeah me too remember watching it on channell 4 at 15 new john entwistle was coming on so stayed glued to it
Awesome, Rick! I've never seen this. I'm a big JAE fan...as well as a fan of yours.
Sensacional !!! Gênio !!! Monstro eterno, Jhon Entwistle !!!
So kick ass
Thanks for sharing this, Rick!
Still the goat.
Very good! Rick's aways have surprises! :)
Steve Harley loving every minute
That was fun
Gracias Rick!!!

That music!!!
Glad I found this one- what John’s playing towards the end
gracias

Keyboard king
Stellar performance by all involved.

Hi. Whats the brand of strings that John Entwistle have on his Alembic ? Thanks
I can only guess Rotosound, as he endorsed them for a long time, and his photo appeared on the electric guitar strings packaging until recently (and I think it still does) 😊
They'll most likely be Rotosound strings on the Alembic given the year. From the late 80's he'd switched to Maxima Gold, but in the 60's, 70's, and early 80's it was Rotosound all the way.
anyone got the lyrics for this?
I've never seen Rick sing or lean towards a microphone.
Does anyone know anything about this song? I can't find out anything about it on the internet. Does it appear on anyone's album? Who wrote it?
At just over 9 minutes in
