CHON on Audiotree Live (Full Session)

- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- CHON is a technical metal band from Oceanside, CA. They play optimistic instrumental music with progressive chord changes and a deep, bouncing groove. This super fast, super clean music pours out of the young four-piece. Mostly devoid of vocals, CHON uses intricate melodies to sing addicting choruses. Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel are young virtuosos, incorporating jazz influences to present their constantly evolving sound. The Woohoo! EP is a step away from the distorted tech-metal of their earlier material toward a crisper, laid-back style. With seemingly unlimited potential and a mega tour with Animals as Leaders, CHON is making waves in metal and abroad. Check out CHON on Audiotree Live

Sound engineer was heard saying "damn I spent 2 hours setting up those vocal mics".
They did a good job, you can hear the unpowered guitar strums at the beggining of "Puddle" quite clearly.
😭
@@skotholt3108 probably via the overheads or some room mics, not the sm58'S. I assume they were just used as talkbacks. Just guesswork here.

almost forgot to watch this today
me too
didn't expect to see you here wow
PLEASE SOMEONE IS THIS ROB FROM LOVE LIVE SERVE?? 9:25
hi charlie
cool to know other people also like actually watch this on a daily basis
Who else is here in late 2022 rewatching this absolute beauty of a performance weekly/daily?
This is worth the money, every single time they come around
Yessir!!

Checking in 🙋🏻♂️
Yup!
I think CHON would absolutely destroy an NPR Tiny Desk concert. I wanna see that shiiiit
Hahaha I love them both...but this one is extra!!!
Yes.
They have a paste studios session now.. close enough
Sooo funny but true...
yes they should
this gives me a choner

@@EthanHGray the tan looks good on him too
@@456yukon ya he's really coming up fr
2023 and I'm still coming back to this fantastic performance consistently years later. It's a longshot, but I'm still waiting for their return!
Right here with you brother.
when they return the heavens will sing
sora pfp ftw
Erick said they decided they didn't want to continue with the band (and is doing his own solo stuff), so I think the current discography is what we are going to get from them
Same
I'm living for the interviewer trying to maintain his cool immediately after witnessing them obliterate the fabric of time and space with their performance like you can tell by the shaking in his voice he was struggling not to just jump on a chair and be like "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD YOU'RE AMAZING AAAAAHHHAHAHGH"
or he's on drugs
@@JeremiahFernandez he’s definitely on something, my theory is that’s why it took them 3 years to release it
Seriously, I love this video of Chon because all of the performances are amazing, and the interviewer just losing it more and more is comedic gold. Like I feel like the camera man starts to accentuate his antics further into the talking segments.
now THAT is a snare sound
yeah! fucking great sound!
yeah
not to mention those toms....
Franklin Savulich that whole kit sounds perfect
Never thought of it like that but now that is all i hear (and I love it)
This has to be the TIGHTEST live performance I've ever seen
Except that bass note at 3:10 but maybe that's why Drew isn't in the band anymore. That and he was always calling the audience "honeydews" and nobody likes honeydew.
lol
before anybody gets genuinely upset on his behalf, i think he just got a little excited and attacked the note a bit too hard. i know i've had plenty of flubs get recorded and uploaded online. the man sings like an angel and they still perform some of those vocal tracks live. i just prefer cantaloupe.
*Les Claypool laughing*
@@dmtspeck He actually played C#, the tonic of the chord they were playing (Cm9). Though, I don't know why it sounds so chaotic. Maybe he did it to soon after the half tone shift from C# to D and then back again to C#.
I remember talking to these guys when I was a metal vocalist 15 years ago and they invited me to come out to California and crash on their couch and jam! so many awesome opportunities I passed up out of anxiety lol.
I love you guys still killing it.
Damn ain’t that a bitch. Relatable though.
Damn that's crazy I woulda killed for that opportunity

Mannnn, whoever produces and engineers these sessions is an absolute boss.
Ikr set up n mixed perfectly. It's clear the guy knows what's up
RIP Chon ❤I will always come back to this session
Why do you say RIP? Have they officially quit or something?
@@bowmaa they are “taking a break”. Short story they got screwed by Sumerian Records and made no money from Albums/Merch/or touring while under their control. Now they are in massive debt with no way to pay it off with their music. There is a deleted interview with studio drummer Brian Evans explaining some of the situation but non of the members have come forth with an explanation. We might see them come back one day but not while Sumerian is around
@@victorlandon7915 damn that's fuckin heartbreaking to hear. Suits ruin everything.
@@victorlandon7915 Sumerian Records and all Record Labels suck. Periphery Left Sumerian Records because of the same thing too. That’s why they started their own record label and even went as far as producing their own music with P4 and P5.
Feel like the drummer doesn’t get enough credit, he’s killing shit
especially on Dew
He definitely doesn't. I think his older brother always kinda unintentionally steals the spotlight. But Nathan (the drummer) has gotten noticeably better and better over the years and has some serious chops nowadays. He actually played their first show with them at 11 years old, if I remember correctly. There used to be a bad quality video of it on here somewhere.
1:16 blasting away
Definitely doesn't get enough credit, glad he's the thumbnail for the video though (awesome shot btw, great job photographer!)
I really think Nathan Camarena is one of the best drummers out there right now. Very underrated.
CHON is a mnemonic acronym for the four most common elements in living organisms: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Genius Band...
Who told you that?
@@hermanpops Mario has said this in an interview before.
OMG, I knew associating CHONSP from Chem to the why they are named like that for some reason, great to know that, tenkiu
We all knew that, haha.
Holy shit I realized that in class but didn't know that's what they actually named themselves after.
This drummer just goes off... damn
I'm pretty sure he was like 17 in this video. Pretty wild

Here in fall 2023. Dew is a masterpiece. How stoked the audiotree group is after the performance. Mario’s solo is epic!
I’m glad I’m not the only that’s so in love with Dew. Dew is just astronomical
Dew is beautiful
I never realized how young this group was. These guys play at a technical/creative level and caliber that's so far beyond their age. GOD DAMN this is dope.
Fucking unreal
I don't know which song i like more - the one with the arpeggios or the one with the tapping.
HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
idk bout you but I think Knot drives you knots (nuts)
@@mehdibouzid4392 thank you for making me laugh for atleast 134 dotted eight notes.
@@anthonydallarosa8314 Hahaha :D a big pleasure my friend. Your comment got me C(h)onned too!
I like the one with the drums.
i cant stand how these guys get compared to Polyphia all the time, dont get me wrong i love the riffs and rhythms that make polyphia so approachable to a more broad audience bringing this style of djent jazz prog fusion to the world, but this right here just shows how amazing and much more technically able and musically knowledgeable Chon is. hands down one of my favorite group of musicians currently. so much to learn from these guys. thanks for constantly keeping me inspired both Audiotree and Chon
Coool but they sound like a half measure 📐 just saying. I am a fan of both and love “Yas”
Hello, 5 years in the future would like to talk to you
polyphia been poppin off lately
if this comment was before renaissance came out I totally get it, but I loved renaissance. On-top of that New Levels/RTYWD are pretty insane. Different from CHON yes, but comparable definitely
Right there with ya. No flak on Polyphia, but CHON were really on something FOR SURE.
I have a deep respect for those drums man. Hes in such a grove hes easy to miss. But once you listen... damn.
i can literally hear the guitar vibrating through the snare drum. shout out to the sound engineer. i feel like im in the room
interviewer isn't on drugs. he's just nerding out pretty hard
I would be elated as well, they are virtuosos
Can you really blame him, tho?
He is trying so hard not to freak out lol
Mario: "He taught us the basics: how to tap and sweep and stuff". yea y'know the basics.
My basics are open chords and palm muting LMAO
Those are the basics tho
For math rock pros maybe
@sREUDIAN fLIP Right, that's at least what I was taught in my beginning classical guitar class, and also hammering on, pulling off and harmonics were also apart of that. I don't remember ever being taught tapping or sweep-picking even in my intermediate class so I would definitley agree that is at least a advanced technique.
@@dante6x For asians. Those are the basics for Asians.
I can definitely hear Fall of Troy's influence on them. They were the first post-hardcore-ish band I really got into, so I'm now seeing why I love Chon's sound.
They was my shit back when Manipulator first came out. I was obsessed. My friends could not get into them but who cares? Then I saw them and Envy on the Coast play in Nashville and I got to touch Thomas' SG and it was amazing.
CHON is this decade's The Fall of Troy but with more skill and less screaming on helium
Dude same for me exactly.
This comment is like the arrow in the FedEx logo. I can't stop hearing The Fall of Troy after reading this comment lol. Good ear
Same thing I thought when I first heard them too, can hear the influence for sure
Same thing for me just after few seconds of listening. Same stuff fall of troy was doing 15 years ago
Chon is a whole genre in itself, nobody’s close to what they got going on!
I could feel those strings prickle my eyes from the screen jesus
How in the world do they remember all the different sections to each tune??? There’s only a few hundred thousand different breaks to a song. Blows my mind! And they are TIGHT as can be! These dudes are unbelievable. Great stuff.
When you love something and embody it, you don’t forget haha
I think its BECAUSE theres so many changes that it helps memorization. If it was all the same shit then itd be harder to memorize the changes. At least in my experience
I just want it to be publicly noted that everyone who listens to chon is family . love you all and chon so much!

Wow I never wanna touch my guitar again
one of the greatest audio tree sessions of all time
This is one of those bands that remind you that there are god given gifts. It doesn't matter how much I play the drums I truly feel I could never grasp these drum parts. He plays everything so effortlessly. These guys are a pure masterclass and they're / were just young men.
I get what you’re saying but also don’t limit yourself bro
and also every drummer is different so don't try to play like anyone but yourself ;)
@@moonboy2022 good advice
The drummer in this session is ungodly. He doesn’t miss a single note. Also those dry MEINL cymbals record so so soooo well. Unbelievable performance by all. Can’t stop watching.
CHON is our Dad ❤️
The crazy amount of respect the host had to these guys is undeniable.
The amount of technical ability here is just incredible. And to have it all coordinated, and to have it all memorized, and to have started when they were 14? That's incredible.
This band is so fire it lights my weed
Laughed aloud....haha...nice one :)
I second that notion!
happy 4/20
Yessss so much
@ Ben Dalf : Good idea, brb . . .
I don't even wana look at the tabs for their music , so amazing
i highly recomend it, i grew up in music since i start learning from them
the right tabs if you find one. are actually not so complex as you think it is. since they like to do repeating licks in major key very unlike your typical prog song that likes to change.
its the speed they play thats pretty dope.
but its definitely some advanced song writing in drum and guitar parts.
Sumail ya it might not be as complex as it seems, I'm gona check tabs out and see what's up. I love this shit, reminds me of music me and my fend play but they are on another level lol
well it did take them 4 years to get in that level of playing. with a band or someone that keeps you in check to push forward. very doable.
Ya that's true, I've been trying ro get bands together forever but I can't get people to commit and really practice everyday . Practice and dedication is all it takes really
This band got me into modern progressive music back in 2013 shortly after I picked up a guitar many years beforehand, if it weren't for this video and the folks at Audiotree/KEXP and lots of other musical communities nationwide we'd never find these types of uncut gems. I really really miss Chon, they haven't released a new title in years and rumours are that they've discontinued as a band, despite it never being officially announced. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be the artist I am today and discovered countless others i.e (Plini, David Maxim Micic, Tigran Hamasayan etc). If ever you guys come out of hiding and read this comment, Thanks alot Mario and Erick. I don't know if you'll ever come back, but what you did in such a short time was revolutionary to me and countless others, much appreciated.
I routinely rewatch this every few months because it inspires me so much
Yes, sure bro

The Rachmanioff yeah, back when there were only 2 genders

Animals as leaders is better
@@anthonyjones3835 Nah. Y'all should try Polyphia though.
Polyphia, Chon and Animals as Leaders are 3 pretty different bands which are all great Imo
@@joelfortin6634 It actually is crazy that you can have such different expressions of extremely technical chops. Between Polyphia's "I like hip hop, but I also like doing crazy shit in abelton and figuring out how to play it on a guitar), to AAL's super fusion/jazz inspired prog rock with different flavors of mucisianship in their sound, to Chon's super crisp technical off-meter chord progressions. All amazing in their own way, and just shows that despite there only being 12 notes and 7 chord styles, but somehow the innovation is still so strong

You'd be tweaked out to stand in their godly presence, too!
music and playing is out of this world, so is the interviewer's conscience
All my love to Chon
Can't wait for the new shit. Suda, as far as I'm concerned, is a groundbreaking piece of music that really should be appreciated by all.
these guys are inspiring, makes me wish i took the guitar more seriously when i dabbled with it via HS class at 16. 23 now and i realize i wanna take it serious and master it and grow to make a living out of it. feels like im starting too late but i know a few licks off a few fav songs. just got a feeling to share that. anyone in a similar boat?
DJ chronic guitar and boxing was what I wanted to dedicate my life to since I got out of high school. Now 29 after studying tourism, massage therapy and having worked multiple jobs, still feel lost and empty. I still play but I'm not as good as my second year with the instrument. When it comes to music you shouldn't worry about being a virtuoso worry about learning and expressing yourself. Big fan of Steve vai and Metallica. Debating going back to school, I feel like I'm super late especially paying student loans, but quite honestly nothing would make me happier now than working in relationship with music and competing in fighting games. I'm a dishwasher now and debate what future do I want, I'll tell you this I want to be happy and I know what makes me happy. Peace
Ive taken guitar semi seriously since i was about 17 I'm now 23 and i still feel like a beginner. I stick to mostly punk stuff, something like this seems out of reach but it really depends how dedicated you are.
This was 2yrs ago so who knows where you are, but it wasn't too late.. I had started playing guitar at 12 played incessantly until about 18. Got into drugs, sold all my gear, abandoned it seemingly forever. At 28, I had the "itch" again started piecing together gear here and there. I'm 38 now, and I play every single day of my life. Don't let various UA-cam videos instill feelings of inferiority or get in the way of something you love.
So beautiful. Can’t wait to start playing again.
10 years I miss them now

Honestly, Nathan (drummer) is a fuckin' ATHLETE... the stamina it takes to play a lot of these parts (flawlessly) and with how hard he is hitting his kit is crazy 💯🔥
I just happened on this channel 'which I love' and this band fell in my lap 'which I also love, I owne their discography. I'm in heaven! I didn't know they did this!

Same not really Into poliphia as much but this is great
Always come back for inspiration. This was the video that really got me to start practicing drums. Nathan is so insane in this video and it proves you can still sound amazing doing technical stuff while live

These songs are so good they literally don't need vocals and would SLAP on the FM radio right now.
They sound great don't get me wrong, but radio (where I'm at atleast) is pretty much just top 40 pop songs, hiphop, r&b, k-pop and some easy listening shit mixed in. Their sound is pretty niche, which is why I don't think they're going to get much airplay unless they're some big name rapper or smth unfortunately.

Still waiting, AudioTree!!!
I can remember first finding these guys on youtube and thinking to myself, if there was a group that figured out how to communicate to each other through instruments it would be Chon. Its as if they are having a conversation they can only understand but leave the viewer to interpret.
I keep coming back and watching this like, once a week. I don't think I've ever heard a live set sound so tight. Like, none of them even mess up a little bit even one time.
All of them have such great tone, and it makes what they play sound even more gorgeous!
it probably takes so many hours to become that consistent while playing live. sounds amazing
I hope to compose this well someday!
I CAN wait forever, Chon!
watch it over and over still awesome 2020
I watch this multiple times a day everyday. It's like a religion at this point.
These guys are super tight. Love their positive sound, super uplifting despite the frenetic pacing. Killer stuff.
I've been following these dudes since their youtube videos were at a couple hundred views each, so glad to see them getting the recognition they deserve
Saw them live and it was the best concert I've ever been to!
I tried listening to a couple of these guys' albums on suggest from a friend, but didn't really get into either and never really went back later. Watching this now in this setting on this channel has REALLY turned that around for me. The close camera angles, the close setting, the mix sounds great... I can hear the snares buzzing when it's quiet... It's like I'm really there in person. Great experience! Pretty sure my opinion of their music will change when I start listening again over the next few days!
And damn! This is a fantastic performance by these guys.
