Do you think that the Hyundai/Kia group's frequent redesigning of their vehicle's is going to hurt resale value as models just a few years old are outdated as soon as a new or very heavily refreshed model is released? I think the traditional 5-6 year model cycle with a mid-cycle refresh has kept, say, Toyota's prices stable, while it seems that Hyundai/Kia models can be had for far less money at the same age on the used market and it may be because of this reason. Just a postulation.
I think they are going with a startup model of constant change to really hone in on market trends. Every model seems to be two steps forward, one step back design wise but they steadily make progress.
Well as someone who buys cars 2 to 3 years old I can say I thoroughly enjoy the quality at basically 40 percent off msrp. My 2015 sonata limited was insanely roomy, feature packed, and comfortable. Not so great in snow though haha
I said this in the Veloster video, they change things so often they seem to have an identity crisis. Where many brands unify everything hyundai and kia are all over the place.
Got one for my wife, went calligraphy on the trim, let’s just say Hyundai has blown me away and my wife feels like I just spent a million dollars to make her happy (I would if I had it) and she looks out the window just to catch another glimpse of it parked. Worth the test drive for those who haven’t driven one.
Got the wife a 2020 Santa Fe when the 21's came out as they were knocking over $7K off. Have to say I'm massively impressed with this vehicle. Compared to competitor offerings at the price point, it's by far the most comfortable and drives incredibly smooth. It feels nicer than her previous X3. We'll see how it holds up long term but for the money, great job Hyundai.
I mean BMW has never been known for great interiors. They're extremely dated looking and quite unimpressive. Mazda was beating the x3 with their 29k CX5 in terms of creaking and build quality in the interior lmao
Totally agree. I really liked the pre refreshed version when it came out. Thought it would be a great replacement for my moms 2010 rx350. It was comparable in size, had better tech and was more user friendly and rode almost as nice. But my old school mom could couldn’t get over the fact that it was a Hyundai. I still think this is a great car for the price.
@@roboticvenom1935 to be honest I had a 2017 F30 335 and it creaked less than my mazda 3 2019 I drive now. But I really, really love the interior of the mazda 3 and that's one of the reason I bought it. Savageese review was the other reason.
I wanted to like it when my wife and I went to look at one. It's weird enough on the outside to appeal to me. It's got plenty of power and gobs of room on the inside. But there were two things that ultimately turned me off to it, and sadly, neither of them had to do with the car I believe. The first is during the test drive, I didn't get to test drive it, at all. The most obnoxious, lead-footed sales guy took us out for a 3 mile roller coaster ride, all the while shouting obscenities about the other car dealerships he'd worked for in the past, and how this was so much better. When we got back to the dealership, we were coerced into a sales office and blocked off between our sales guy, the sales manager, and some other little hype man in a dealership polo for 45 minutes while we both furiously tried to explain how we weren't looking to purchase right that second, as we had two more cars to look at. Normally I can use my 6'3", 260lb frame to clear a path, but the sales guy was bigger. Once we did make it back out to our car, my back was killing me, and I can't decide if it was because the seats in the Santa Fe lacked the support in general, or they just couldn't handle the joyride we'd been taken on. Unfortunately, with that being the only Hyundai dealer in the area, I'm not going back to give it another try. I want to like it, but both Hyundai and Kia dealerships are still the reason I can't enjoy the Santa Fe, the new Tucson redesign, or the Stinger GT.
@@johnfetter3252 oh I mentioned Kia too. That one ended up with the cops having to come to retrieve my driver's license that they wouldn't return till I sat down to "run the numbers" which they wouldn't do without pulling a credit check.
This is such a Hyundai dealer thing to do, it's almost too relatable. As an i30N owner it pains me to even think about going to the dealer for servicing because of how incredibly trash the customer experience is. I would urge any mistreated customer to please contact the Hyundai support center and inform them on the behaviour of their employees. They are incredibly defensive and delusional in answering but at least you're not getting steam rolled for your money.
Is this really a thing in North-America? Over here they almost are throwing the keys in your face. And if they don't have the spec or engine they will make sure it will be there the next weekend. I am exaggerating, but I never went on a ride with a salesman in the car with me. Most of the time I called ahead, and the car was waiting, new of used..
Assuming you have the cash flow and the right management, I think it's easier for a new car company to improve fast and compete with established brands than it is for an established brand to remain good. This is just my guess and it may be a stretch but here's how it goes imho: the up and coming brand has an incentive to produce good stuff at a lower price if possible because it's got a reputation to build and marketshare to grab. They don't need to reinvent the wheel, instead just implement the best practices in the industry (ie. be like Toyota, don't be like Nissan) which is why they had actual automatic transmission instead of CVT like Nissan for a long time. In the case of Hyundai, it also helps that they're a metallurgy company too, sourcing most of the metal and high strength steel in-house, a competitive advantage so more money can go to development to do better or catch up to others. Compare that to established brands like GM and its subbrands, or Ford. The pressure is high to cut as many corners as possible because they already were established as big players decades before Hyundai even came to existence. The focus is pleasing shareholders, not building an image for reliability. Last but not least, Korean businesses are simply going after the market share of the Japanese, trying to replicate the Japanese business models that have worked. And it's working wonders for them. Today's Hyundais and Kias go toe to toe with the likes of Honda/Toyota. Samsung/LG all but dominate the home appliances and tech etc.
Crazy huh. They literally just started mass producing vehicles in mid 80's. Remember Daewoo? Jesus. Haha...I lived long enough to see that failed attempt. And then slowly, but surely, they got better & better. And for many things they've actually gone from just being competitive to leading. Wild...that's just 30 ish years.
@@Iamallwaysright1 Kinda like Honda in the 90s. Just make good cars and people will buy them. Eventually though they just end up selling a brand. I've been particularly disappointed with Toyota lately. I think they've gotten to comfortable.
They paid attention to what the better Japanese companies were doing. They also have an unusual degree of vertical integration, with metals companies also being related at a corporate level, as well as making their own transmissions and a lot more. That's the exact opposite of the Ametican makes, that used to be like that, but spun off all those subsidiaries years ago to generate cash, but lost control of their quality. If Hyundai transmissions are troublesome (as some have been), they get that division to redesign them. Ford or GM have to negotiate such changes, which takes time and costs money they don't want to spend. Their joint ten-speed is an example, having to meet the needs of numerous models in both companies. It can't be changed that easily.

You'll hear/read all sorts of nonsense about Hyundai engine problems, but they're mostly just myths. Consumer Reports has Hyundai rated as about average in reliability, including their engines. Those ratings are for the last ten years. Consumer Reports says premature engine failures in all brands (yes, that includes Hyundai) have become so rare they're barely worth worrying about. The rest of the car almost always wears out in some other way first, or the car gets in an accident and gets totalled (most often what happens). One possible, but uncommon, problem various makes have had is valve trouble in engines with just direct injection. This most recent generation of Hyundai/Kia engines combine port injection and direct injection. That minimizes valve problems and gives maximum efficiency in various operating conditions. These are very modern engines that don't closely resemble older Hyundai engines.
I do agree that it's very nice and you get a lot for the money. But after owning 5 Hyundai products and having a lot of issues with all of them I wouldn't buy another. It seems they change engines and transmissions so often that they never get the bugs worked out of any of them.
My ex bought a used kia two years old on its third transmission.. and that was just the beginning. I think to save time they just wire tie them in since they need to change them at every oil change.
I miss the early/mid 2010's Mercedes button insanity. Sure, minimalist interiors with lots of screens look great in a magazine, but physical buttons are so much safer and easier to use than having to dig around 3 different menus to do simple stuff, like turn on a seat warmer. Kudos to Hyundai for physical buttons!
I like the physical controls in the center stack. All controls in the touch screen are a safety hazard as you have to take your eyes off the road. Kudos for common sense!
How is the digital dash? Can you turn the brightness down at night? Does it work w/ polarized sunglasses? My biggest concern from getting this or new tucson. Edit: Also, sick intro, brah.
I don't own polarized glasses but you can dim it at night. There is also a dark theme with blue accents that's way less fatiguing than the white with blue accents. Once I got everything dialed in, I haven't had any problems at night with it.
I own a 2023 Tucson Hybrid and the digital screen is mostly all black, so I don't really have any problems or distractions driving at night... I did, however recently rent a 2022 Ford Edge, and OMG... it uses a huge all-white background on its oversized iPad for a screen... what a terrible design and hugely distracting at night, even when dimmed!
I don't care for the DCT transmission. The turbo lag is another issue for me. I currently own a 2015 Lincoln MKC 2.0 AWD mated too a 6 speed auto and i don't have these issues. No turbo lag nothing but seamless performance. That all said, i like this SUV a lot and it's got a VERY competent AWD system with the Htrac. However, i am thinking back too when Kia put a DCT auto in there Sportage and it was nothing but trouble. And i see that happening with this Santa Fe model down the line. So i'd MUCH rather go with the 2.5 standard 8 speed auto with 190hp. Getting the SEL with Premium and Convenience packages will get you 90% of what the Limited and Calligraphy trims have. And in terms of HP the 190 isn't that bad at all and you won't have too deal with both the mechanical issues of the DCT and turbo lag. Otherwise, a VERY VERY nice SUV that easily gives Subaru Outback a run for it's money in terms of "off road" capability.
LOVE your reviews! Always exceptionally thorough and highly informative- thank you! Any chance you're planning on reviewing the new Hyundai Tucson hybrid soon?
Seems the latest trend for manufacturers is to add a multi syllable word for the highest trim level that is a relevant. Signature. Platinum reserve. Autobiography. Citadel.
Jesus is coming soon, John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Begotten Son that Whosover believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”. Come to Jesus He loves you dearly.
Please don't buy one. You will never repurchase a ford. Are chevy are dodge again. I have all Hyundais they are one of the best cars that don't have problems. I work for the city cars for a living. All of the American cars can't keep out of the shops, needing repairs. Hyundai Santa Fe is a real car that works. It is better than a BMW. You take care of it; it will take of you.
I think where this is going to have trouble, at least at MSRP, is competing with the CX-5, which is cheaper and better built. The saving grace is, well, nobody with decent credit and negotiating prowess pays anywhere near MSRP on a Korean car. My dad paid $8,000 for a Daewoo Nubira CDX wagon two decades ago, MSRP $20,000, and $8,000 was all it was worth.
So, I bought the limited trim with a lot of accessories. - I changed my intake, filter, turbo sensors, map sensor and added an after market tune. And now this is the best daily driver I've ever owned. ....I have owned, E46s, W204s. Bottom line is, I don't care about the badging when you're getting this kind of value. Plus the insane warranty and free maintenance. I considered a GLC and Volvo's SUV etc... Then I saw this review a few months ago. And fast forward, money well spent..financed....(haggle!)
This guy is the best car reviewer in my opinion. He hits the facts but also the emotional aspect of reviewing the vehicle. Which is crucial when it comes to your own car shopping. I have bought the 17 Genesis G90 3.3T AWD after watching his review on it. No other gets in to his depth of details without making the 'normal' viewer bored with technical terms.
Did you give it a title saying 2022 in order to generate more clicks, even though the review is of a 2021 model? And why did you try to place your drink cup on the dash when there are two perfectly useful cup holders?
Financially that makes little sense. A 2019 has just had the worst two years of depreciation, and will still be a reliable vehicle for years and years. The Santa Fe really isn't a direct competitor to the RAV4 - that would be the Tucson. The only sensible reason to trade on the Toyota for this is if the person needs more room, and the difference isn't that dramatic.
Thanks for a concise video that shows all the new features of the 2022. A month into the 2021 Santa Fe SEL and I'm in love. Nice little updates on the 2022. Highly recommend the 2021 as well
We own a 2019 and 2020 S-F both are SEL 2.4 non turbo FWD models. They are a pleasure to drive and can average 33mpg on HWY. The SEL has all the standard safety features included, a super deal for $28,000. At $14K less than Calligraphy model it is a bargain..
And you won't have the trouble of any turbo lag and the DCT or "dual clutch" transmission issues. That the turbo engines will eventually be plagued with. Honestly, folks are already complaining about how "jerky" and slow it is too respond in stop and go traffic.

bought this in august, brought it home, wife was *unhappy* because she was expecting me to buy a q7 that we had driven 2 weeks prior. her honest reaction was "Hyundai? why? I don't like it."
until she drove it. Now she's super happy and constantly driving it. Big thumbs up from our family.
I think that they will soon reach stability. One aspect that I do believe they will always keep doing leaps is in the tech department.
I don't know they can make changes so often and still make money.
@@roboticvenom1935 well Hyundai beat it I guess with a 22k-23k this guy probably paid for
Totally agree.
@@Wasabi9111 my mom exact same way with the badge and she wanted the Infiniti QX50- no comment but it’s been flawless with the current 28k miles
That must’ve been Tony Salami Hyundai that Mark mentioned. Too bad you didn’t hang around long enough to meet the extended warranty guy.
Ouch. And I thought I had some very bad stealer ship experiences.

@@802Garage LOL

How did Hyundai go from junk just a few years ago to now making extremely compelling cars for the money… truly impressive.
That’s how the Koreans roll lol

Yeah, much like other people in replies mentioned, Doug is not really a reviewer. He gets cool cars and neat things thanks to his 4+M subs, but at this point some of the things he wrongly describes or the features, he must be doing that on purpose.
Either that or he doesn't care enough to find out (like calling Unimog hydraulic hookups "power outlets for electric power tools"). Easy things to verify or research, but he doesn't care. I'd rather he said "I am not sure what this does" instead of calling it a power plug.

what about the hyundai/kia engine reliabilities. is this good engine
Good question. There is a lack of coverage of engine failures due to weak rods. Or something.
Everything is good about these cars except the engine you have to take real good care of it
That was the old Theta 2 engine but those engines are being phased out
Worry not. Every 18 months you get a new engine and transmission when the old one stops working

I don’t give a f@*k about the car, where do I get that Rambo T? 💪

And now this is the best daily driver I've ever owned. ....I have owned, E46s, W204s.

Still junk Hyundai/Kia hopefully it won't burn down. Terrible dealer network.
Did you give it a title saying 2022 in order to generate more clicks, even though the review is of a 2021 model? And why did you try to place your drink cup on the dash when there are two perfectly useful cup holders?

Should one trade in a 2019 Rav4 limited for this Santa fe?
*Asking for a friend
Nope
Financially that makes little sense. A 2019 has just had the worst two years of depreciation, and will still be a reliable vehicle for years and years. The Santa Fe really isn't a direct competitor to the RAV4 - that would be the Tucson. The only sensible reason to trade on the Toyota for this is if the person needs more room, and the difference isn't that dramatic.
