    Happy Saturday everyone! This is probably the most comprehensive refresh we've ever seen in the mainstream segment, but under the tweaked sheetmetal lies a new platform, all-new engines, and an updated interior. Seems like Hyundai has captured a lot of what we liked in the Palisade, into the slightly smaller Santa Fe.

    Good review thanks. I’ve had the Calligraphy model for about 6 months now and have been very happy with it. With respect to your comment on the lag. I don’t find it to be a problem in everyday driving. Sure, if you slam the gas pedal straight to the floor it will take a bit of time to get up and running (like any other vehicle I’ve driven) but if you moderate your throttle input, then it responds quickly and it gets off the mark very well. Overall I find the 2.5T and wet dual clutch transmission to be excellent.

      Great car …. but. I’m reaching out to fellow 2021-22 Santa Fe Calligraphy owners. (2.5 T w/HTRAC) I’m vexed; the Radiator fan will randomly run at full speed for 1-2 mins. after I turn the engine off. The Dealer can’t find any sensor defects in the diag. We live in a mild climate; the engine is not being taxed when this happens. This can’t be normal. Is anyone out there experiencing this issue too? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated - Rick

    I like it when manufacturers use the same engine across a wide variety of vehicles and platforms. Maybe I'm wrong, but it tells me that they have a great deal of confidence in it's performance and reliability, which for Hyundai and Genesis is a big deal due to the fact that they have to stand behind their drivetrains for ten years.

During the test drive, I came to a stop sign. I hit the gas and the engine reved but didn’t go anywhere. The sales rep asked me to put it in park, turn off the engine and turned it back on. I put it back in drive and the car lunged forward, as if it jumped a gear right off the line. I decided to purchase a Mazda CX-9 instead. No regrets.

      @Joseph Payton yes I have, they’re competitive but definitely not “best in class” especially not the Sonata or K5. They don’t have the best interiors (that’s Mazda), don’t offer the best performance/driving dynamics (also Mazda), don’t have the best reliability (that’s Toyota, Mazda, and Honda), don’t have the lowest ownership costs, I could go on and on. Hyundai and Kia are definitely better than what they use to be 20 years ago but you fanboys gotta stop overhyping them. They’re not doing anything groundbreaking except giving a lot of their vehicles bizarre, overstyled designs that won’t age well in a few years like this Santa Fe. Just cause they’ve improved as a whole doesn’t mean they’re the best at anything, their warranty is great but they’re not even the only ones that offer 10 year 100k mile coverage (Mitsubishi does too) and bc their cars are nicer and have higher build quality than they use to they’re no longer the value kings either.

    I just bought a 2023 Santa Fe Calligraphy this week. I think the lag you're feeling is likely the Auto Idle function that kicks in when you're stopped. You have to disable that or you're mashing the gas then waiting for it to start, then take off. Push the top button to the left of the mode dial to disable the feature (light comes on to indicate it's off...weird?). Problem solved. The only problem is that you have to disable it each time you restart the car.

Just get a pali

    • @ppmnox
      @ppmnox 3 роки тому +2

      yet if you don't want something as big as the Palisade you buy this instead because it fits your needs. Also, the interior quality differences are not very significant at all. @@ppmnox Have you been in a calligraphy palisade? There’s diamond quilted stitching everywhere including the door panels, and all of the upper dash is soft touch, even soft touch in the rear row. Everything appears and feels more upscale in the palisade. I even have the ambient lightning that can be changed to any color. And i have captains seats in the 2nd row. My friends have made comments and say my 2nd row feels like they’re flying 1st class. I also have the gorgeous white beige interior. It literally feels like a Mercedes. Overall, it’s a far better value than a Santa Fe

    • @ppmnox
      @ppmnox 3 роки тому +1

      @@eBikify yep, and my opinion stands: the interior of the Santa Fe is awesome and very close to the level of the palisade. And you calling the palisade a better value ignores other buy factors. moreover, the palisade drives like a boat compared to the santa fe, which is much quicker, handles better, and has better steering feel. also, some people prefer a bench 2nd row to captains chairs and don't need, nor want, a 3rd row.
      And if you must know the fun I had test driving the 2022 Santa Fe convinced me to shop, and this week buy, a Genesis GV70, which was quicker still.

      @@ppmnox I actually owned the redesigned 2019 Santa Fe (the one before this new refresh), and traded it in for a palisade very recently. The sportier feel of the Santa Fe wasn’t worth it to me.

    I have to say that I REALLY wish you would review the 2022 Santa Fe Limited 2.5T, FWD model. There are simply no reviews on this model as the primary focus seems to be the Calligraphy, Hybrid and PIV models.
    I purchased the 2022 Santa Fe Limited 2.5T FWD model in December 2021 and I truly love this vehicle. I’d say it’s the favorite of all the cars I’ve owned. However, it has what I think is a SERIOUS problem related to what I assume is drivetrain that I’d like a professional to explain just in case I don’t understand how the car works.
    So, I don’t know that this issue is called but my biggest grip with my Santa Fe is that it is EXCEPTIONALLY easy to spin the tires. I’ve experienced this in several different scenarios and I’ve found it to be so bothersome that I’d say that it’s dangerous. I DO NOT have a heavy foot but when I need power to merge into traffic; the vehicle should not spin it’s tires on less than hard acceleration and especially when I’m only in Comfort or Smart driving modes. I love that the engine has the power but I hate that the tires can’t seem to handle that power.
    My second big gripe is what seems to be a disconnect between the transmission and the engine. When I approach a stop, the engine auto start/stop feature turns the engine off. As designed, the engine restarts when I lift my foot off the brake so there could be a small (but expected) delay between the time my foot is on the accelerator and when the vehicle begins to move. Problem is that I experience another delay because it feels like the engine and transmission disengage when auto start/stop first kicks in. The result is extended delay in moving the vehicle.
    My third gripe is not big but odd and annoying. I’m sure you’ve probably experienced what it feels like when you’re sitting in a car (not moving) and the wind is strong enough the push on the vehicle. I’ve noticed this same experience in my Santa Fe when the engine is running and the transmission is in park. If I sit in park long enough, I’ll feel a very slight push that feels like the wind but it’s not. It happens maybe once or twice a minute. My guess is that something is going on between the engine and transmission but I’m not sure.
    Another gripe is the electronic nature of the shifting mechanism. Unfortunately, there is a very noticeable delay between the time I push the Drive, Reverse or Park buttons and when the vehicle initiates the action. It’s not a terrible delay but enough to be an annoyance.
    These are just my impressions as a regular driver but I can’t help but wonder if other drivers with the same model as mine have the same experiences.

    • @starztrukk
      @starztrukk Рік тому

      On gripe 1 - That is why Hyundai sent AWD models for test reviews. Their AWD systems tend to handle the 2.5T's power much better than FWD, as can be seen in the K5 GT and Sonata N Line; they both exhibit tire spin issues from the engine. The torque is just too much for a non-AWD setup. We plan on purchasing an AWD version in a couple months.
      On gripe 2 - There is a button to the left of the drive mode dial that allows you to shut off the auto stop-start.
      On gripe 3 - Do you regularly engage the parking brake?

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 3 роки тому +1

    Since the 2018 model year the Santa Fe and Kia Sorento have shared a wealth of components, features, and basic specs (including overall size) with the most important difference being that the Santa Fe dropped its 3rd row option (in the US) and KIA made the third row standard in all trims. Sofyen is correct that the latest version of the Santa Fe leans toward the "budget luxury" vibe of the Palisade while the new Sorento emits the more traditional and "rugged" vibe of the Telluride, most notably in the top trim Sorento SX Prestige/X-Line vs the Santa Fe Calligraphy AWD where MSRPs are almost identical.
    He's wrong, however, that the absence of third row seating in the Santa Fe provides more cargo space than the Sorento. (4:51). In fact, the Sorento's cargo space behind the second row (with the 3rd row folded into the space below the cargo floor) amounts to 38.5 cubic ft vs the Santa Fe's 36.4 cf. And overall cargo space behind the first row of the Sorento is 75.5 cf vs 72.1 cf for the Santa Fe.
    Unfortunately for the KIA, however, is the fact that the Sorento loses its slight advantage in cargo space (measured above cargo floor) when it comes to passenger capacity. Both the mid and top trims (EX and SX) of the Sorento come standard with captain chairs in the 2nd row, effectively limiting accommodations to four passengers without deploying the third row. The Santa Fe, on the other hand, provides bench seating in all trims, including the Calligraphy and therefore accommodates five passengers. Even worse, the only way to get the optional higher performance 2.5L turbo engine and DCT the Sorento and the Santa Fe share is to purchase a trim of the Sorento with captain chairs.
    In short, the Sorento forces the deployment of its cramped third row for more than 4 total passengers. And that limits overall cargo space to 12.6 cubic feet. As someone who owns a 2018 top trim Sorento with a 2nd row bench and values the 3rd row seating for occasional use, the new Sorento simply won't work for my family. If we were to replace it, we'd have to shift from the KIA to the Santa Fe and give up seating for more than five passengers.

    • @eneumeyer19
      @eneumeyer19 3 роки тому +1

      Good point about the seats, I never considered the disadvantage to the captain's seats.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 3 роки тому +1

      @@eneumeyer19 Thanks. Complaints about the absence of 2nd row bench seats in upper trim and luxury SUVs are usually limited to those with larger families. And no doubt automakers' market research suggests that those with more disposable income have smaller families and prefer the "luxury" touch of captain chairs. But KIA has carried the trend too far, I think. We're a small family (2 adults, a teenage daughter, and a big dog.) We seldom deploy the 3rd row of our Sorento unless we have 6 or 7 passengers on a local trip and the alternative is taking two vehicles. In those cases, infrequent as they are, the 3rd row is a huge convenience. When we bought our Sorento in 2018, it was the major reason we opted for it over the almost identical Santa Fe.
      Unfortunately, while our dog is content to share the back seat with one or even two human passengers, he's not built for the design of a captain chair. If we traded our Sorento for a current model we'd have to either (a) permanently deploy the third row or (b) keep him in the cargo hold behind the 2nd row. Neither option is nearly as convenient as our current arrangement where he can ride on the back seat unless he's returning from a romp in the woods or at the beach and he's consigned to the "way back." Further, deploying the 3rd row in a vehicle the size of the Sorento effectively eliminates all but a tiny space for cargo. Longer trips with gear/luggage simply prohibits the use of the 3rd row and allocating space for the dog behind the 2nd row severely reduces the space for gear, luggage, or other cargo.
      I know many folks will find choosing a vehicle based accommodating the family dog is eccentric if not insane. (Although Subaru's TV commercials suggest we're not alone.) And I'm sure that many Sorento customers are content with seating for up to four humans and only occasional use of the 3rd row. But KIA's decision to eliminate 2nd row bench seating for any but the lowest trims that lack the option of the more powerful turbo4/DCT combination the Sorento and Santa Fe share as well as a number of other bells and whistles is, I think, a major error. And not just for families with a carload full of kids. In effect, it eliminates the prior major advantage of the Sorento over the Santa Fe.

    9:25 In hindsight... Not having wireless CarPlay because you spent more on the Nav is just so incredibly stupid... it makes the Qi charger almost pointless because you have to plug in to use CarPlay.
