    Back in the 80s when this started getting air play, you could watch patrons of noisy bars, restaurants, and other places go completely silent for the drum fill to come in. Then they'd go back to talking. It was strange and funny. I bought this album the week it came out (being a huge Genesis fan). I took it home and played it repeatedly. My older sister came down the hall to my bedroom to ask who it was. She went out and bought the album later that week. It's been called the most iconic few bars in music.

    He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

    • @gwumpyolman
      @gwumpyolman Рік тому +4

      I have to agree with the other old man here. This is a great live performance. I wont say the best, but just because it really depends on my mood at the time. There are a number of 70's and 80's bands and performers that I think you need to see live to get a feel for a real show. KISS, AC/DC, Van Halen, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, and so many more people that are such a treat live. I threw a couple of country guys in because they put on a hell of a show. I will get hate for this, but I am ok with it. But Phil does a GREAT show. His timing is perfection, his dedication to his craft is amazing. A+ talent. I heard he ended one of his marriages by sending her a fax. That is a fancy text, sent with a special machine that printed the message on paper, kids.

      You're absolutely right... I just saw him live last Friday in Hannover and his appearance kinda broke my heart. You could really see how age and sickness has ravaged him. I was still a child when he was at his peak, but my father was a big fan then and so was I, and in my mind he was still this smirking, funny man who was not afraid to say his mind and had these great songs and awesome musicvideos. None of that but age has changed (when he talked a bit in concert he called Putin a "fucking idiot" ^^) but it was still heartbreaking to see. It kind of consoled me that it is his son now who plays the drums but I can only imagine that he misses it. Everyone knows that age really IS inevitable, but knowing and seeing really hit differently. I am so happy I got to see him that night. His voice and character have not changed at all. Another iconic Phil Collins song is "You'll be in My Heart" from Disneys Tarzan...
    I grew up listening to Genesis and Phil Collins ( I was a teen in the 80's) and I get shooketh when I find people who don't know them.....
    The Charismatic Voice did a really in depth reaction to this song.....

    That is one of the best performances I have ever seen. And then he bows so nonchalant as he walks off after literally taking our breath away. Phil can pull off epic, but this was something else.
    Now check out some of his other stuff (are you a Disney Tarzan kid?....Mr. Collins wrote the whole thing). The other 5 guys in Genesis (and later just 3) were also great at epic. One of the best Prog Rock bands out there. Great musicians and music composers. [Note: this song was following his wife's leaving for another man while he toured with Genesis and is his angst afterwards.....I think it is his fantasy of meeting up with the guy]

    I saw him with Genesis back in the 80's and solo, he was brilliant. So much carisma. So sad, that he can't do this anymore. We love you Phil! Everyone who grow up in the 80's can remember at least one time playing airdrums on the dashboard in the car to this song.

    You should check out some of the younger Phil singing lead for Genesis, a child actor as well as a very accomplished drummer, his sense of rhythm and characterisation made him an amazing front man even though he had to be pushed into it by his band mates when the original front man (no less than Peter Gabriel - another you should listen to) left.

    What I found great was how you had just commented on the way he was 'just walking around, singing', as is drums were coming into view, and your astonishment at how he dropped his explosive drumming into the mix.
    I've compared his walking around the stage as an act of staking out his territory, showing the audience subconsciously that for the length of the concert, that stage belonged to HIM and the band.

    here is something to think about that I have not seen anyone comment on. from the moment he is at the top of the stage, walks down the stairs, walks across the stage, up the stairs, finally gets to the drums is the exact time he needs to be at the drums. that in its self is awesome.

    Never can I hear this song without immediately visualizing Crockett and Tubbs, super cool, super serious, Crockett driving the convertible, speeding along, Tubbs giving his sawed off shotgun a last once over. Speeding forward with fatalistic determination toward a confrontation with the bad people that either and maybe both probably won’t survive. Now Forty plus years…… all of us speeding toward OUR personal fatal confrontations. Michael Mann and Phil Collins, you gave us magic that continues to calm and comfort us in our storms. THANK YOU

    I remember hearing In The Air Tonight when it was first released by Phil Collins. I like Genesis music, but the fist time I listened to this song I was hooked. It has been on my play list for over 40 years now. It had always been on of those songs that when the intro starts you just crank up the volume, and everyone has to play the air drums when the time comes.

    He wrote this song during his divorce from his first wife, he was certain she was seeing a realtor, she left with his 2 kids. He stepped out of Genesis for a time and did an album called Face Value where the songs were meant to bring her back. He says he didn't know what some of the lyrics meant when he wrote this: just the pain, anger and hurt. This concert is probably one of the best and this music is unbelievable.

    1 of the few solo artists from that time that consistently used the same musicians for live and studio. And those same musicians are who played this show close to 40 years later. Darryl Streumer on guitar, Leland Sklarr on bass, and Chester Thompson on drums. They also worked with Genesis on their last couple of albums.
