If it’s leaking from the bottom you will need to replace the bottom boll. If it’s leaking from the top a new filter with oring will fix it. But it’s under warranty so the dealer will fix it for free. I would replace it with billet aluminum bowl if you want to. The bottom drain plug strips extremely easy so don’t ever drain the field bowl from the bottom drain plug. Just unscrew a whole bowl with filter all makes more of a mess, but it will keep that from happening.
I have had metal shavings in the fuel filter of my 2017 l5p every filter change since it was new 6 years ago. It has 135,000 flawless miles miles so far. Not sure of the source but 4500 hours of run time and the fuel pump has never skipped a beat.
My ram dealer wanted $65 for a 5.9 cummins filter. I told him it's a $30 filter why so expensive, he said "you aint getting nothing for $30 for a diesel" I went to the parts store and got a wix for $30. Same dealer wanted $40 to put a headlight bulb in my moms jeep, and that's was ONLY labor. I replaced it in under 2 minutes.
I told you the L5Ps are super simple. They’re really no more expensive than the 6.6 gas to do routine service jobs on. The L5P doesn’t require synthetic oil so actually it is cheaper to change than the gas truck. A tip for guys if that fuel filter housing leaks after you change it, put a little grease around the o ring on the canister itself.
You saved my bacon! I couldn’t get mine to prime. Lots of videos on filter change, but none with push button starts on a 2023. Thanks so much!!! I cycled the priming process 3 times with about 1 minute in between. Truck started right up. No problem Thanks again!!
The dealership as of Nov. 3, 2023, said to me that the price, labor included, for fuel filter change is $190. I did it on my own and I had to only pay $32 for the fuel filter :)
I bought my 2020 GMC 3500HD Denali Dually new right off the delivery truck. Since it was new oil is changed every 5k miles with Schaeffers 15w40, yes I know its overkill but I'm ok with it. Fuel filter is at 10k miles, or every other oil change. Every time I fill up I add Schaeffers diesel treat like religion. 32k on the truck and not a single issue what so ever. From experience I will swear by Schaeffers products. And I do all my own work on my truck. It will never see a dealer unless the motor or tranny ever had issues which I don't think will happen .
I would change it at every oil change 5000 mile are 7500mile.A lot cheaper then injected pump and injected. Also I would use diesel fuel treatment every few fillup.I do it when I get my duramax
@@troyl.8691I hope so, I own a 22 Denali 2500 13K miles on it. I replaced the fuel filter at 10K miles. No metal found. I don’t believe there’s any high pressure fuel pump that’s 100% bulletproof. I work on Freightliner tractors with DD13 and DD15 and the high pressure pumps fail between 400-600K miles. Huge mess. Even the fuel tanks have to be sent out to clean. I own a 99 Ford f350 7.3 diesel since new, never had a problem with the high pressure oil pump. Difference is fuel pump runs 25-32K pounds pressure. Oil pump only runs 1-3K pounds of pressure. Excessive pressure is what causes the pump to wear and come apart.
Those metal shavings are most likely from the CP4 return.. basic pump filters will catch that even if they are dirty, those are huge (comparatively speaking) ie +20 microns, could be from some sort of break in on the pump, but regardless, that can’t be good. Good thing the filter caught it and didn’t send it back to the pump and injectors. Good luck with that… 😢
My 2016 was a lot longer and time consuming. Also had to make sure the new ring was good after the install and then you had to prime the filter to get it flowing through. I have 5k on my 23 duramax, and this by far seems alot simpler. Also supposed to be self priming so that’s a big plus when the time comes. Appreciate the video.
I changed out my filter head and use a donaldson filter/water separator. Less mess and easier to change. Also the filter is better than the one GM puts on. That filter for our trucks are used on the cruze also.
Isn’t it “run” and not accessory to prime the fuel pump? My 21 ram starts like normal after a filter change…I just prime it like 4 times just to be safe. Thanks for making the video
You know you got a counterfeit filter from Amazon there, right? I fell for the same thing. The listing said genuine GM AC Delco part, but it wasn’t. I ordered what should have been the legit part from the GM Store on Amazon, but my order was fulfilled with a counterfeit part that looks exactly like yours in the video from a company called AMG LLC USA. I went to the auto parts store and got a genuine GM filter and there were definite differences. Just thought you’d like to know since the first thing you said was that these trucks are too expensive to risk damage to save a couple bucks.
I do my oil at 6,000 and fuel at 12,000. I use a/c delco filters and I use mobile delvac extreme just so I have full synthetic oil in it. These trucks are the cheapest diesel to maintain by far.
I’m doing my 90k services tomorrow including the fuel filters. I’m just a little over but🤷♂️ One filter seems easier than the Cummins especially the one in the engine bay😆
If you trade that truck in they'll change that filter again no matter what you tell them. I changed the oil in my wifes jeep wrangler on Saturday and after an impulse buy on my new 3500 Ram we traded my 1500 and Jeep in on Monday. The dealership literally drained Mobil 1 synthetic and removed a Mopar filter with 20 miles on it and installed no telling what even after I showed the new oil on the dipstick.
JB, another great vid. I will comment that I would not get hung up on Delco filters. I cannot speak for their fuel filters but will not buy them because all you have to do is look at their oil filters in a tear down comparison with others and consistently they are about the only filter lower quality than a Fram. It gives a person no reason to think their fuel filters are top quality. I’ve owned a number of Duramax engines and still have one but will not touch a Delco filter. I have two Ram’s now and at least the Cummin’s oil filter is made by Fleet Guard but I’ve replaced the original with Fleetguard brand as the replacement because it is higher quality in the filter breakdown comparisons as well. The RAM fuel filters however are identical down to the label on the actual filter as a WIX and unfortunately they are China junk. I love the content and appreciate you.
How long did it GM to complete your order from the time you place, like you mention, this week your 2024 Silverado will be here? Why did you pick a 2024 Silverado over a GMC HD? Great video once again. Thank you.
Nice and easy filter change compared to the Ram's dual filters for sure. My buddy on his Denali ran into the same issue you had when trying to prime the truck. Once he figured out the issue the truck started right up. That's a job well done. I changed my Ram fuel filters at 10,000 miles and the 10k interval works for me.. I appreciate the video JB and look forward to the new ride.
Lol, whenever I changed my RAM filters I was like, “clear my schedule” 😅. I do prefer 2 filters though especially with these sensitive fuel injectors.. Thanks bro!!!
How much did Chevy pay you to say that metal shavings are coming from where you're getting your Diesel from I just done mine yesterday and it had metal shavings in it too that's not a good sign that is normally how you can tell if your fuel pump is failing
Lemme tell ya. For me that housing had siezed up & wouldnt budge. Had use hacksaw blade to saw off as ol screwdriver thru the housing and twist didnt work either. Was a B! Messy. Got metal housing off amazon. It worked. But whomever designed that on an $85k Truck needs a Texas A$$ Whoopin!
After the truck gets about ten years old after market parts are very very o k with the next person that owns it.... When it gets twenty years old , you can use use filter... When it gets 20 years old, you can use used filters in that thing and it'll work. These mechanics are fuck crazy these days
You will not get a Ford you probably gonna get the ram. Which I would love to see but if you get rid of this truck you will regret 💯 going from diesel to 6.6 gas
Wtf are you talking about? Do you think before you get online and type stupid shit? It’s pretty clear this guy makes his own money. Not everyone with a little money is getting it from their parents. Some people actually have some intelligence and work ethic. Apparently you lack both of those
A $40 filter ever 15k miles is daddy's money? Just had my driver in a silverado 5.3 follow me towing a 1200 lb aluminum trailer and a RZR. Took $120 for the round trip. I used a smidgen over a 1/4 tank with 2 RZRs and a 3400 lb trailer behind me. That one trip could've bought 45k worth of fuel filters for what I spent extra in gas for his truck

Quick tip for the gasket on the housing. Much easier getting a dry rag and pushing it to one half enough for you to slip off. Hope this makes sense

Thank you JB! I used this as a guide to replace my fuel filter. Saved me 400$🦾
So there is a GM bulletin out on the non-metallic metal particles. GM said it’s from your lift pump in your fuel tank.
The dealership as of Nov. 3, 2023, said to me that the price, labor included, for fuel filter change is $190. I did it on my own and I had to only pay $32 for the fuel filter :)
GM, AC Delco fuel filters are actually made MANN+HUMMEL and are identical to each other and WIx/Purolator, Mann, and made in Czechia.

Metal shavings in the fuel is a for sure warning sign that the Bosch high pressure fuel pump is failing.
NOT GOOD 👈🏻

I thought it was a Denso pump?
@@troyl.8691 yes the latest version is a Denso HP4
@@carlosr1060 I believe the injectors are also denso. It should prove to be an excellent choice by GM.

I hated changing mine aswell on my 16 specialy on North Dakota winter!!! Now I have a 22 and it’s much easier
Just paid $70 for mine at a dealership of course, after paying $70 for a health inspection, 3hrs on way home, change fuel filter message pops up 🙄.
It’s maintenance like this which is making me lean from another Ram to a Chevy….ease of maintenance.

which Donalson kit did you get?
@@paulherrman445 I got the fleece performance filter head and filter thay came with it
Do the newer (2023) GMC 2500HD not have a filter/water separator?
They do have them, but the filter is undersized IMO. Also having the plastic housing it will eventually strip, break, or just leak.
1st thing I did was remove that piece of junk and install a vse fuel filter water separator.
How much are you getting on the trade on the AT4?
Do you worry about Amazon parts being counterfeit AC Delco parts? How would you be able to tell?
Typically if it’s sold by Amazon and not a 3rd party seller, it’s genuine.
Like @outbacker292 said, I try and check every seller and read reviews to see if someone mentions if it’s not an actual OEM part 👍🏾
Man I just noticed your truck fits in your garage. I'm jealous. Great content as always.
You’re not kidding, took me almost 10 years to get a big enough garage 🤣

Ram 6.4 hemi. Would love to see that comparison.
Use a solo cup or gas station cup to catch that filter and you’ll save 90% of the mess.
Similar to changing the lower fuel filter on a 2011-2016 Ford 6.7 PSD. The 6.7 PSD has two fuel filters as well.
Thanks for sharing this, I think GM should follow suit, the diesel we get is below average compared to other countries 👍🏾

I doubt it stinks as bad as gear oil. I changed my diff fluids last year and wow. That stuff stinks.
Ha ha ha. Yeah ya never forget that smell after your 1st time
Did you get a 450? Surprised you are getting rid of the GMC. Seems to have been a great truck.

$295. Oil change and fuel filter 2023 2500HD
Oil change price ain’t too bad. & the Fuel filter shouldn’t be a penny more! smh
The diesel you drained when removing filter, does that just go back into the tank? Or do you need to take somewhere to discard?
