Just want to say that I like watching your videos simply because you're such a chill dude. But, also, I sincerely think you present and analyze things as well as anyone. I learn more about the game from you than anyone else. Your casual tips about how to play cards and use general strategy... is top notch.
100% agree. Dev seems like the chillest, coolest MTG UA-camr and I really do like his analyses of cards a lot. Hoping you hit 100K subscribers soon, Dev. You deserve it!
Happy belated birthday Dev! It was mine on Sunday. Great content as usual; I’ll admit I was sad not to see a dedicated Dino Deck but I get it. Can’t wait for the new set and new possibilities!
I agree with your list I Have been testing a lot of decks and my top list right now is; 1). mono white Knight's, 2) mono white lifegain (possibly boros - they tend to have stuff that plays on lifegain) 3) your budger black burn deck (with the minor vampire theme), 4) the mono blue wizards tempo deck with curious obsession and tempest djinn. It loses very little in the rotation. some thoughts on your list; Blue red wizards - we might even see a hybrid one drop wizard. Vampires - dimit tends to have a few vampires which might see black/blue vamps playing on XLN stuff or even esper vamps. Stompy: yes - it's hard to deal with a turn 3 steel leaf let alone one at turn 2 and I think carnage tyrant will hold out against any teferi-based decks that survive. Fog: yup agree. They do lose approach if they are going that route. Hopefully there are ways to exile it instead of shuffling it. Something like wheel of sun and moon but I think if there are two replacement effects the owner chooses so that won't work. Maybe a card that prevents you from shuffling cards back into your deck - that would help mill fet around gaias blessing too.
Dev, first off I want to say I love your videos. I try to build a lot of the decks you cover because they are fun to play while also being pretty competitive. I was sad to not see dinos on the list but as soon as you said it I was expecting RG monsters to come up because I agree it is a better deck for those looking to go RG. I have some fun decks that I want to start running before rotation and was curious on how you test your deck builds. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see future videos come spoiler time and deck tech for Guilds.
Bro, you nailed it once again! I've built almost every deck you've mentioned this block and have had sooo much fun. I'm currently running WU control with Nexus, Karn, and Teferi and have not cared that I don't run fogs. You should try it out..... (You know you want to be a reformed reformed blue mage)
I think that your analysis on the subject of rotation is pretty accurate actualy. I love your content mate! You are the most revelant source of information and inspiration for standard (and one of the main reasons i still play standard). Keep it up! ;)
Just a reminder that we already have another one drop wizard in standard in the form of siren stormtamer, and as a person that's been jamming wizards since DOM, it's already almost better than soul-scar mage. The ability to more consistenly hit face after you adeliz is much more relevant than the additional damage from prowess and the ability to protect adeliz is also relevant. If chainwhirler wasn't so prevalent I personally would be running it over soul-scar mage.
Also, just wanted to say that I think U/W/x is going to be the deck that replaces red as the winner of the rare slot lottery. The core of Teferi, Azcanta, & Settle is too good for it not to. The only question at this point is if bant is the correct U/W shell, or if ravnica will push it in a different direction.
Tezzeret and Teferi is an excellent control/draw combo. Mill may be an excellent option, using Millstone, Diligent Excavator, Homarid Explorer, Patient Rebuilding, Navigator's Ruin, and a lot of cheap artifacts and creatures spells.
I can't speak with super-spiky confidence, but I've gotten 1st place multiple times with a Boros Path of Mettle deck at FNMs; almost always getting top 4 or top 8. Note the list I brought was Boros Midrange-aggro, more inclined on the 'midrange' part. I even got 3rd place with a Boros Path of Mettle Dragons list because Glorybringer pulls double duty here.
Already playing it. Smashed a 3 round fnm week before last friday test running it, 2-0 against all my opponents to win the night. Sadly, some have adjusted their sideboards strictly to fight my unsealings now after they saw the carnage (no puns intended) I caused that week, so it's been a bit tougher this most recent week to fight my opponents at times.
@@rexone9564 it can, I've had to adjust the deck and make tweaks to it to ensure it can, and sadly replace drover with druid of the cowl until rotation because red players putting me on the draw kills my drover with chainwhirler ETB trigger since I dont have a dinosaur under my control.
So glad to see G/W midrange on the list. Not sure that I've seen your build of it (if you have one) but I've been playing basically G/W angel tribal since Resplendent Angel dropped. So sad my Metallic Mimic 2-drop angel is going to rotate :(
Honestly believe a mono red flame of Keld deck will still be a thing even with the losses of soul scar and Bomat. Just feel there will be another shock lightning strike like card and maybe a new haster
Good video bud I'm rocking B/W nights belania style lol love the tribal style :) might build vampires too since I have all the B/W removal and isolated chapels
Even though I know that three colors is hard to pull off, if they reprint shocks I think that jeskai midrange could easily be a thing with lyra, teferi, pheonix, etc.
i replace my gearhulks with nexus of fate, and cast out becomes ixalans binding. for dissallow well just run cancel, instead of glimmer well run anticipate to dig for answers in cionjunction with azscanta, esper chromium nexus is nice too flash in chromium at eot, then two nexus seal the deck usually. Love the cat btw.
Shock, Lightning Strike and Wizard's Lightning will survive rotation, so I wonder how they support the Izzet guild even more because more cheap burn spells would probably be toxic as hell in standard. Tribal decks are obviously a starting point after rotation, all remaining in the format (maybe beside of cats, but lets see what the Selesnija guild has to offer), but I expect one single card to go over the top: Teferi. Especially with the supported guilds of Izzet and Dimir I expect Esper Control becomes even more powerful and Jeskai Control could find a way into the meta. Can't agree completely with your opinion about Turbo Fog. You are right, it keeps many key pieces, but imo it is essential to have another cheap Fog after rotation (not impossible for sure, but not a given) and it losses at least one very important mechanic: Cycling. I'm sure the deck can compansate all of this, but maybe on a at least slightly lower powerlevel. But lets wait for the spoiler season to come up with more reliable predictions^^. Oh, btw, people don't hate Control, people just hate playing against Control or watching it on stream, that's a huge different :D.
Great insight Dev. I tend to agree with the choices. Maybe not the order but I can say with confidence that if some one comes up with a solution for Turbo FOG that will be the number one deck for some time. 😃
Happy Birthday Dev! I think RW Midrange is absolutely gonna be a deck! To have the strength of Lyra and Phoenix in the same deck! Good call I'm gonna start brewing now
I'm also keeping my eye on U/R Wizards, but also Saprolings, even if the existence of Chainwhirler continues to suck for them. But what I'm really looking forward into is Muldrotha! Golgari and Dimir both are in the first set of Ravnica and most importantly, no more Scarab God to compete with. :D
I have been playing a really solid Vampire deck that is only losing Deserts (which is quite relevant) and Metallic Mimic (pretty relevant). It goes pretty wide thanks to the sorcery speed token producers for 2W and 2BW and Radiant Glory as a supplemental team pump. Chainwhirler hurts, but with 8 team pump effects, it isn't that bad.
I would like to agree with everyone that the quality of content is excellent, I also look forward to every item. The problem we have here Dev is that you need to keep us amused ALL the time, so doubling or may be tripling the amount of content would be appreciated! ^^
Like the video and your future "META" analysis. Agree with control and Nexus being up in the top of the list (and the bane of our existence). Hoping Guilds of Ravnica provides us with the tools to combat those decks. Maybe something that punishes a player for each extra turn they take (such as players loose 1/2 their life total for each extra turn they take, or a steal a player's extra turn card to stop infinite extra turns). Just "wishing".
Glad I'm not the only one who sees UW Control losing a lot less than the decks currently keeping it in check. Without the card advantage and reach provided by Bomat Courier, Chandra and Hazoret there's nothing to stop Teferi Control (to give it it's proper name) completely dominating Standard. Unless there's very specific hate - in more than one colour - in Ravnica, Teferi is going to have to be banned very soon after rotation.
I'd say the loss of the torrential gearhulk is actually a huge blow for the control-deck. I play dragons and the gearhulk is the only piece in the controll-deck I struggle against. Just so much value to the control-deck I can't see this be easily replaced.
Yeah - same for my Glorybringer. Insane value triggering Dragon's Hoard get out a blocker an hit Teferi. Was a sincere winning line, don't think can be easily replaced.
Agree with all of this! The only one I would have added is Golgari. If there’s much of anything that reanimates and/or creates saprolings that deck will at least be a high tier 2 competitive deck, but I think it will go higher than that!
Yes this! I've been all over the comments spouting SAPS SAPS SAPS, they are really solid now and Golgari should give us some more heat. I think people sleep on how good song of freyalise is and it breaks the saps wide open as a viable deck. Add torment of hailfire into the mix just for kicks, with the right draws you can torment for 10 in like turn 4 using song and saps.
It’s amazing how much I wanted to play MTG since Ixalan block. Once again I play fun decks that appeal to me with my favorite colors of red blue green and white
I feel you on the feeling with red white. Some good cards and with Boris being one of the guilds, it may be real good. A lightning helix would seal it as a real deck
I feel like Macabre hatchery replaces Liliana’s Mastery, allowing you to bring back Death’s Baron, Graveyard Marshall, and a one drop. This is a good fit with the new Liliana plane walker. Turn four put a card in the graveyard, turn five bring at least 3 creatures back.
I honestly believe people are sleeping on any possible Golgari deck, especially it's a guild that will come out this set. I'm running a pseudo-control Golgari deck on Arena and it plays well even against control decks, pre and post board. I hope it develops into a Rock deck once Ravnica comes out.
Love this list. I think pieces like Heroic Intervention and especially Blossoming Defense will be a problem for Stompy if they will not be finding replacement. Maybe U/W control get a challenger in Esper Control with Gearhulk leaving Standard and finding replacement in Chromium? And my absolute Wildcard is Mill, with House Dimir coming up :D Love your Content!
I play Merfolk in Standard. Another guy plays vampires. I beat him every week. Merfolk is faster and kumena gives us card ad and a way to grow our dorks. Vamps is losing the Kaladesh two drop (Can't remember it's name). Which is a huge deal. Merfolk also has unblockable creatures meaning we can end the game through a clogged board.
I never disagree with you my friend, but I really think not ranking RG monsters at all, over even early decks like Merfolk especially is a shame. Phoenix, jadelight, steel leaf, demanding dragon, lw elves, vine mare... absolutely outclass menfolk and some of your other early decks you had listed HM-7. STILL love ya bro.
U/R wizards can be played in modern highly doubt that U/R wizards would be affected as much by losing soul scar mage izzet like you mentioned probably has a lot of 1 drop creatures that could replace soul scar mage
I'm with you on g/w midrange man. While I dislike playing against control and nexus I realise they have their place and are far from unbeatable. Keep up the good work buddy and hoping you get 100k real soon
Well i have built a BG midrage deck with vraska and a some explore creatures in it like jadelight and it went really well, since golgari is gonna be in the next set i bet on GB
Viktor Alfredsson same here although mine's a pseudo-control and it holds up well against br and control decks. try sticking a couple of Karns for card draw.
Dev, awesome video as always - any plans on gameplay footage though? I think it’d be cool to collab on some draft chaff deck techs of sorts. I’ll make time if you’re up for it!
I concur on your number 2, but I think it's even better than that. I predict Seleysna midrange becomes the top deck at least for the first few weeks of new standard.
Dev! Love watching your videos! I have a request for you, though. With the release of guilds of ravnica and all the spoilers out, I am brewing a grixis discard deck, using niv mizzet and nicol bolas as my top end. I was curious as to what you would build, if you went in on a discard deck?
Interesting, do you have a decklist? I always thought that those two 2-drop pirates were awesome, the reverse snapcaster mage and the black pirate with flash and deathtouch, be very nice to use them in the same deck
Sadly I do not have a deck list. They're around though. I think Dev even put out a list during Rivals. He missed the best payoff card though - Buccaneer's Bravado. If they can't knock out your attacking Lannery Storm on turn 3, then on turn 4 you smash Dire Fleet Neckbreaker and should still hold the two treasures needed to cast Bravado. Most of your creatures have at least two power, so anything getting through for damage can hit for 10 on their own. What I've come to learn is that the constant threat of Dire Fleet Poisoner and Buccaneer's Bravado makes it incredibly difficult to trade in combat with pirates. My FNM has learned to fear those cards so I can often bluff through damage even without them. Pirates also have some amazing sideboard pieces with Fiery Canonade, Angrath, and Fell Flagship.
I was thinking W or RW Soldiers/Knights because most of the good weenies are Soldiers (Skymarcher Aspirant, Militia Bugler, Mentor of the Meek, etc) in addition to the fact Boros is one of the featured guilds in the GRN. Not to mention, Path of Mettle is great and first strike/haste is pretty common in sets. Just my two cents.
i also think human would be a good tribal deck theme but yay goblins! also since its monday here where im (im from the futuuuuuure lol) from, happy birthday~!
Thank you for this video that has absolutely nothing to do with the Standard format of Magic the Gathering outside of a single kitchen table in the middle of rural America.
What are your thoughts on Esper control? I thought it was a shoe-in for this list. I think because, like you said, U/W is positioned so well going into rotation, that Esper is going to rise right along with it, because I think Esper gets the edge in the control mirror due to Vraska's Contempt and Chromium. Losing Fatal Push hurts the deck a lot, obviously, but I've had success with a rotation-proof Esper build that uses a combination of Seal Away and Cast Down instead. I also think that Chromium is just a stupidly good card for control matchups, and isn't bad in any other matchup. There aren't a whole lot of decks that have an answer for a 7/7 flier. I've actually been running 2 main board in my rotation proof list and took 2nd at FNM last week with it. I know FNM isn't the best representation, but it's the only "tournament" setting I've played the deck in. I haven't bought Teferi on MTGO because I'm poor, so I've only been testing on Xmage, but I'm 7-2 in ranked matches with it so far. Its biggest weakness is the early game, without Push, but its mid and late game I think is probably the best in the format. EOT Chromium into Teferi is completely backbreaking. This is becoming a wall of text. I'll stop now.
One you didn't mention at all that I have hopes for is a Golgari deck. I have had decent success with GB Explore vs red aggro. Sticking a Wildgrowth Walker is pretty much game over for red. I've also been successful against Turbo Fog with it. I will miss Liliana and Fatal Push, but black will never hurt for removal. Vivian and Vraska may work in the deck. GB Saprolings is another possible deck, though it may be too narrow focus. I've also had pretty good success against Turbo Fog with Dragons using either mono-red or mostly red splashing Nicol Bolas. There's a lot of direct burn damage in that deck that Turbo Fog can't stop, and Banefire is a great finisher. It can have a reasonable game against mono red aggro in the current meta, though it is not favorable against the better aggro draws. I have found that Sarkhan almost always lives to be useful on turn 4 to cast a big dragon, and he often sticks around for multiple turns. I play a lot of cheap red removal to try to keep the early board clear for Sarkhan, and it has worked pretty well most of the time. Dragon's Hoard is indeed a good card. If you untap on 4 with Sarkhan in play, then you can play both Dragon's Hoard and 4 drop dragon (hopefully Nicol Bolas) on turn 4. If you don't have Sarkhan, then Hoard will get you to a 5 drop on turn 4, too. The downside is there isn't much early game threats, and my build doesn't really get going until turn 4.
When you say Saps is too narrow of focus what do you mean? Cause I agree that swarm saps is too narrow, but there is a great sap demon deck out there for aggro, and I personally run a self sacrifice demon sap deck, using the demons to draw hate and killing my own board to drain life with Poison-tip archer and slimefoot. I am really hoping Golgari gives me some more heaters though atm I'm about 58% on Arena with it but locally I'm running really hot with it, more like 70% cause nobody expects it nor do they board for it. Most board answers are board wipes and I like having my board killed, pretty consistently get a turn 3 slimefoot, and he cancels the heals from fumigate once you have an archer on board wiping board kills them
We have to see what permission spells we get for UW with the loss of disallow and censor and glimmer it’s pretty big deal actually. Cancel is no disallow at all and loosing that is a big deal but yes the cards that stay are the most powerful!!!!
All I want from Guilds of Ravnica is some more good mill cards. Not like Paranoid Delusions, but actual good ones similar to Breaking // Entering, Mind Funeral, and Glimpse the Unthinkable
Dev, I would love to hear your thoughts on sideboarding, especially against control. I think a lot of people would love even a whole video on that... wink wink.
Dev I'm buying cards for speculation. now that GOR has spoild more then have the set I'd like to see another video like this with the information we now have. Or something abought what cards that get better agian knowing what we know now. And hopefully before the full set is spoiled and prices start going up I would like to know your thoughts and opinions
My G/w angels deck is just missing some pieces when selesnya guild gets cards it will be super juicy. If i don't get mana screwed I win. Resplendent, into Shalai, into Lyra is nasty. I stayed alive in showdown this week against r/b chain a lot better than I expected in two dif rounds. I can't wait for Chandra and Glorybringer to rotate. I will miss fatal push and torrential......
I'm excited about Modern. I wonder if Guilds of Ravnica will shake up tribal in Modern. Right now in Modern we have Humans, Spirits, UR Wizards, and Merfolk have always been around in Modern. Will Merfolk rise up to compete with Modern Humans? Will Spirits get stronger? I'm excited to see what Guilds does to the format.

Thanks soo much for the vids man, they really help me out. BTW i just subbed after watching your vids for 2 weeks lol finally right
Happy birthday Dev. Good luck for your channel and thank you for cheering up my day with cat kisses. :*
My playgroup does a standard Pauper once and awhile and I played a mono white aggro pauper deck and even that was awesome:P
I already play u/r Wizards so I can't wait to see the izzet cards of guilds of ravnica niv-mizzet Hype!!!
I feel you on the feeling with red white. Some good cards and with Boris being one of the guilds, it may be real good. A lightning helix would seal it as a real deck
Happy birthday!! Hope you have a wonderful day today! Thanks for your amazing content.
And my absolute Wildcard is Mill, with House Dimir coming up :D
Love your Content!
Green got an indestructible that's easy to give trample
I play Merfolk in Standard. Another guy plays vampires. I beat him every week. Merfolk is faster and kumena gives us card ad and a way to grow our dorks. Vamps is losing the Kaladesh two drop (Can't remember it's name). Which is a huge deal. Merfolk also has unblockable creatures meaning we can end the game through a clogged board.
Dev I'm surprised you didn't even mention elves! I've been messing around with the new UG and BG elves and they're pretty powerful.
U/R wizards can be played in modern highly doubt that U/R wizards would be affected as much by losing soul scar mage izzet like you mentioned probably has a lot of 1 drop creatures that could replace soul scar mage
tbh losing riddleform is more hard hitting for ur wizards deck
Lut Aiman oh no what am I going to do without riddle form that could easily be replaced
I love it when kitty makes a cameo.
So sad to lose Ballista/constrictor to rotation, makes my B/G controlish deck a lot worse
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEV!!!
I predict some sort of Golgari vraskra tribal. If there is anything black ramp related we might be able to get a turn 4 vraska.
I loved your summary here. Excellent work, thanks.
Dev, awesome video as always - any plans on gameplay footage though? I think it’d be cool to collab on some draft chaff deck techs of sorts. I’ll make time if you’re up for it!
Happy B-day Dev!!!
Mono Red or Red/Black Burn has done very well for me on Arena. It can beat fog and control most of the time.
I am definitely excited to play some more Vampires here soon. Hopefully they do get better. Great video as always Dev!
I concur on your number 2, but I think it's even better than that. I predict Seleysna midrange becomes the top deck at least for the first few weeks of new standard.
I just got back into this at M19, and I kinda regret moving towards Zombies. I hope Golgari gives me something good.
Dev! Love watching your videos! I have a request for you, though. With the release of guilds of ravnica and all the spoilers out, I am brewing a grixis discard deck, using niv mizzet and nicol bolas as my top end. I was curious as to what you would build, if you went in on a discard deck?
Im still smashing people with my RB aggro pirate list. We'll have to wait until winter for the lands but that deck is fire for how budget it is.
Interesting, do you have a decklist? I always thought that those two 2-drop pirates were awesome, the reverse snapcaster mage and the black pirate with flash and deathtouch, be very nice to use them in the same deck
Yeah angraph is is also a mighty help. Nothing like gassing out into topdecking him, taking their only blocker and swinging legal
I predict soldiers tribal post rotation
I was thinking W or RW Soldiers/Knights because most of the good weenies are Soldiers (Skymarcher Aspirant, Militia Bugler, Mentor of the Meek, etc) in addition to the fact Boros is one of the featured guilds in the GRN. Not to mention, Path of Mettle is great and first strike/haste is pretty common in sets. Just my two cents.
Happy birthday, Dev!!
Thanks for the upload. Great VOD. I hate to agree with you, dinosaur never really going to be viable? Are they? Bummer. Guess I'll remain Jank!
Yes R/G Unsealing is beast went 3/1 at FNM this weekend
i also think human would be a good tribal deck theme but yay goblins! also since its monday here where im (im from the futuuuuuure lol) from, happy birthday~!
Here's hoping Guilds of Ravnica brings GW some cool new toys with the Selesnya representation!
-signed, a GW Midrange player
God i'd love a Glimpse the Unthinkable for Muldrover to mill myself
Gaea's blessing made me,quit playing mill
It got to where my local meta had it sideboarded in off color decks just to stop mill, in defense of that though mill was dominating my local meta
Dev, I would love to hear your thoughts on sideboarding, especially against control. I think a lot of people would love even a whole video on that... wink wink.

Or something abought what cards that get better agian knowing what we know now. And hopefully before the full set is spoiled and prices start going up I would like to know your thoughts and opinions
this is awesome, my current deck is uw control. losing tori will be hard but i agree, UW WILL SURVIVE!!!
If Boros becomes a thing, the Boros Huatli could be good in it I've thought of constructing a Huatli Warrior Poet Boros knights deck.
With kumena there's a very important thing - 4 toughness.
Lol I'm watching as I type this and you just said it.

I agree with R/W Mid-range especially with "Path of Mettel"
My G/w angels deck is just missing some pieces when selesnya guild gets cards it will be super juicy. If i don't get mana screwed I win. Resplendent, into Shalai, into Lyra is nasty. I stayed alive in showdown this week against r/b chain a lot better than I expected in two dif rounds. I can't wait for Chandra and Glorybringer to rotate. I will miss fatal push and torrential......
Happy Birthday Dev
I'm excited about Modern. I wonder if Guilds of Ravnica will shake up tribal in Modern. Right now in Modern we have Humans, Spirits, UR Wizards, and Merfolk have always been around in Modern. Will Merfolk rise up to compete with Modern Humans? Will Spirits get stronger? I'm excited to see what Guilds does to the format.
Happy birthday Dev!
All about this list. Also have the same feels about r/w midrange.
