This is the first time I've checked out an electronic drum kit. Its not the most expensive or the cheapest e-kit, but its on the lower side of things. Only $450 on Amazon for this set of donner electronic drums! For the first time really diving into one, I had too much fun. Ive played on a handful of e-kits, but its always been just messing around at a store or somewhere, but man I've been missing out haha. Of course its hard to put an e kit on the same pedestal as an acoustic drum set, but when you stop comparing e-kits to acoustic kits you realize the value and potential in an electronic drum set.

I learned to play on an Alesis Nitro Mesh. You can customize the individual sounds of each drum and expand the kit with 2 extra dual zone toms giving you 4 extra sounds. I use a tom for a tambourine and an extra crash. They make recording a breeze since you literally have an output just for that specifically. And can then import the hits as midi notes into any drum software you want and create any sound you want. Thats the biggest advantage of E-Kits.

I use the same kit but I just run it straight into my DAW via USB and use it to trigger my drum software in real time. I use Steven Slate Drums, but I’ve seen it used to Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer, and anything else that takes midi to trigger samples

@@cbyrd914 Addictive Drums and EZ Drummer are the less expensive options. I would recommend listening to demos to see which you like better. Both have the ability to expand with optional kits, as well. You would purchase a license for them and download them. I have tested both and prefer EZ Drummer for it's default sound, but Addictive drums has some nice kits available via expansion packs. Steven Slate Drums is also relatively inexpensive but I have not tried it yet.

I don’t currently play on an e-kit, but in high school I had a Yamaha DTXpress-III and I used to play on a Roland TD-20 at a local church. Seeing you jamming to the built in MIDI tracks reminded me of how much fun I had jamming to the built in tracks on that Yamaha. The songs automatically looped and I would just loop them for so long, trying different grooves each time through. So many musical memories 😊 That Roland was also definitely the best at the time

I can absolutely see benefits to electric drums. Honestly, as a hip-hop producer, unless I'm trying to sample the sound of an acoustic kit I think electric drums are superior for beatmaking. You can trigger any sound with them so the kit is basically just really tactile midi controller. The possibilities are super inspiring.

Just for a challenge (well, actually, also to make better use of space in my studio), I built a 7-piece e-kit on an old rolling office chair base. It has 7 drums and 7 cymbals (or cymbal SURFACES). This allows me to roll the whole thing into a corner when I'm not using it - which is most of the time. It uses the 2Box Drumit V 2 module - a great module.

  • @RobDuggan
    @RobDuggan 9 місяців тому

First ever kit I "built" was based around a Yamaha DD7 which I removed the piezo surface triggers from, added 1/4" jacks to the casing and then mounted those triggers into some acoustic drums. The toms were 10" rotos, the snare was a 13" brass piccolo filled with rags and a regular drum head, the kick I actually splurged and bought an S&S Industries unit.... similar to a Roland KD-7. After that I bought an Alesis D-4 module, and a footswitch for the HH. Made some cymbals using plastic practice cymbals and some Fishman Blue Microdot piezos. Worked very well and I actually gigged that setup for a few years. Fast forward 30 something years and many E-kits later... my current setup is an expanded Efnote 7. Great seeing the evolution over the years!

I played a e-kit at my old apartment. The big challenge was cymbals. You just couldn't get a decent hi hat stick/foot interaction, and it was tough to find cymbals that were acoustically quiet: the whole hollow plastic thing was still pretty loud. If I move back to an apartment, I'll spend some more time with it, but the L80/Aquarian OnHead (which can act as triggers) route is pretty good for now.

I had a decent Roland digital kit for a while, it was a fantastic practice kit. But the BIG, BIG problem with electronic kits is that hell, no, parts for them are not at all available the way they are for acoustic kits. The snare sensor in my Roland wore out because somebody kept hitting it with a stick, and I discovered that the only way to "fix" it was to buy a new snare unit thing for about $300. No spare parts were available through typical music shops at all. That was the end of that $900 investment, I sold it off for $80. A touring drummer whose digi kit fails over something like that is boned, unlike an acoustic drummer, who can just run to any music store for fresh heads if theirs wear out. You also suddenly need a huge, heavy, expensive amp to do any serious live playing, not needed with acoustics. They're cool, but they have big problems.

Gotta say I'm pretty happy with the Millenium MPS-850. Four toms, two crash, a ride, mesh heads, hi-hat uses a weird sensor on the pole so it feels naturally heavy. It sounds meh, but the control box has MIDI in and out in addition to USB midi. Lotsa sensitivity settings etc. too, so it can be tuned in with EZDrummer or the like to really work pretty good.
e: And there are two sizes of tom, two of each size. And the mesh heads feel pretty good. Great practice kit for more proggy stuff where you just need that extra cymbal and tom

Yeah I use the same kit! Super nice hardware and the midi-usb into drum software definitely improves its usability. It responds very well and it was priced pretty well if you compare it to the Roland TD-17 kvs. It works super well with a double bass pedal and the hi-hat is really responsive despite being an e-kit. The toms are definitely great and despite the toms and snares are the same size, you could also make one of the floor toms an auxiliary snare as well. It is an awesome first kit for me and will probably always be my go to for alt rock and metal songs!

I've played e-kits for over 20 years. Just can't beat the convenience. Recording is easy, either audio or Midi then choose whatever sounds you like. Live they're great, cos the band doesn't have to do the loudness wars to compete (although they do anyway...). And e-drums are easy to run through IEMs. One band I was in could practice entirely silently, apart from the singer and the sound of the mesh heads getting walloped. I've played Rolands for the last 20 years but had a Simmons SDS8 for a while before that. Still love 'real' kits, but e-kits are so much more liveable...

My go-to is sampling. I'll create multi-tracks from my real kits and composite them down to individual samples at separate intensities. Basically a homemade MIDI library from my own sounds. I've also either rented nice kits or had my drummer buddies come over to sample their kits.
I've had this simmons digi-kit for what seems like forever. Very EOL, but works perfectly fine along side the sampling workflow I use.
To sort of make up for the loss of feel and feedback I also run a rehearsal PA in my studio, So i turn the PA stack into a full drum monitor.

I have an old Roland td-6v V drums kit as my home practice kit. It was a church kit and kept in great shape. I got it for a great price. Even though it is an older generation kit, the brain still has all the classic sounds, such as good acoustic kits and Roland electronic 808 and 909 sounds. Roland's sounds beat all the others IMHO. Roland builds their pads and cymbals fairly well so they hold up over time and can be fixed easiy if they stop working as well.. I did replace the cheap plastic breakable rack clamps those older gen kits had with stronger modern ones. And I ditched the round PD-8 drum pad and foot pedal setup for the high hat and went with a hi hat stand mounted cymbal pad and trigger base. Realistic and so much more intuitive. It works for me! I'd go with Roland v-drums any day hands down.

I really enjoyed this video because you seemed to be having fun. I play Jobeky drums with a Roland TD27, digital snare hats and ride and Roland cymbals. Love it! Not sure it’s worth the added work to gig with or not, but the bonus is practicing at any time without disturbing the wife. Thanks for the Saturday morning entertainment.

Yeah I bought a Roland E-kit about 2 months ago, my first drum kit for years. There's a lot to like about it, particularly for the 80% of the time I'm just doing drills and practice, so no one else has to hear it. Needs an external amp/speaker to jam with others, which is a bit of a drag, but for practicing alone I reckon it's excellent. Being able to Bluetooth songs/lessons into the system is great too.

I just sold my 1980's Yamaha concert set and all the cymbals because I'm about to hit 65 , I don't play out and much as I loved them they really filled up a room. So last night I brought my Roland E-drums in from the garage. This e-kit is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 years old & pretty basic.
I just finished playing them. I have to say, as simple as they are it was a lot of fun.

At the ripe age of 49, after 40 years of wanting one, I finally bought my first drum set, the Titan 50 by Simmons. I wanted an e-kit for space and volume knob. When it went on sale for $350 for July 4th I jumped on it. Most kits I auditioned had samples that sounded thin or hollow. To me, the Titan 50 by Simmons sounds way better than other comparably priced sets. I would have had to by a $1000 kit from other brands to get comparable sounding samples.

I was chatting with Leon Russell’s drummer about 20 years ago after a show and he loved his Roland e-kit. Main selling point for him was that his bandmates could stand close and not get killed with the cymbal sounds. No plexi walls. Easy to transport - of course. I’m not a drummer - not sure if I’m even a guitarist. Don’t care. Just subscribed!

I'm really glad you brought out the BOSS DR-5! That's a classic piece of equipment! I am actually about to be sending away for a BOSS DR-202 (Dr Groove), with an updated custom backlit display. It has some of the best sounds that are easy manipulate & can come very close to realistic tones when mixing & eq levels are right. I had one of them many years ago & it was stolen from me, along with much of the music i had written to it, so I'm really looking forward to getting back into writing with it again, when i receive it here in a couple of weeks. Cheers!! 🙂

I have an older version of this kit. It's actually pretty good, though mine didn't come with the throne and the module isn't as robust. I'm planning on upgrading it with a bigger snare and a double kick pedal. Eventually, I may get a different module as well, but for now, it's getting it done while I'm learning.

Im in an acoustic duo and played all sorts of hand drums. I got tired of dragging them everywhere and finding the right stands that won't fall apart on me. So i switched to a yamaha dtx mid level set. Got a computer and superior drummer. Added some more cymbals and another drum pad. Upgraded the hihat and got a really nice tama speed cobra pedal. Holy shit does it sound great. The cymbals choke, the drums are fun to play, and i can still add pads. Superior drummer is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge upgrade in sound. The best part is i don't need to mic anything to record and ive been playing with people all over the world on sonobus. And if i don't like a sound i can change it on the fly and add effects like reverb and compression. It all breaks down and fits in a storage container. And when i get bored with that i can turn my acoustic kit into a really giant hybrid kit.
