may I suggest rigging your dust collector system so it has a pivoting arm like Mark Galicic has on his saw mill for the hydraulic lines. And I would highly recommend a "Floor chute" so when you sweep up you just move it over to the large floor inlet and let it handle it. And have a hand held hose like you do on a shop vac to tidy up the Lt70

Hey Nathan, the six inch hose needs to be about four inches so that it matches the intake fitting of your blower. The larger hose reduces the velocity inside. It's the velocity that moves the saw dust, not the vacuum. Think of the difference between 20 MPH wind and 40 MPH wind. 20 MPH just makes a whistling sound but 40 MPH can take the roof off. The force increases to the square of the velocity. Double the velocity, four times the force.
The area inside the hose increases to the square of the radius. The radius of the six inch hose is three inches. The radius of the four inch hose is two inches. 3^2=9 2^=4 The six inch hose has more than twice the area of the four inch hose which means, for the same volume of air, the velocity inside the four inch hose is more than twice the velocity inside the six inch hose. That makes a big difference when you're trying to move saw dust.
marklapierre5629 hit the nail on the head, try the 4 inch hose, it will surprise you.
Are you trying to say a smaller hose is better? Cuz I'm not sure. Can you explain it again in more detail?

My reasoning is that the velocity of the air flow is more important than the volume of the air flow. Larger hose, less flow resistance due to lower velocity results in a higher flow rate but lower velocity. Smaller hose, has more flow resistance due to the higher flow rate which yields a lower flow rate, but higher flow velocity. It's the velocity of the air flow that moves objects entrained in the flow, not the volume of the flow.
In a summer storm there may be wind gusts of 40 MPH for example. The result is practically no damage to infrastructure. In a hurricane the wind velocity can exceed 80 MPH. The force of the wind does not just double with the doubling of wind speed, the force increases to the square of the velocity change. If the force was 40 lbs at 40 MPH then the force at 80 MPH would be 1640 lbs.
For those of us who get really aggravated about your burn pile... please understand that most of us are from up north, where every BTU counts in the woodstove. Just remember, most of us, if not all, understand the surface carbon cycle.
But we would really, really, love to have access to that low-cost firewood.

Hi Nathan what about building a wooden box that accepts the hose and when full you could pick up with the forks to take to the burn pile.
I think that is called a tipster, it fits on your forks, you trip a latch and it rolls ahead and dumps.
If you add old coffee grounds to the compost pile, it draws worms that digest the pile, and feeds the chickens a handy meal. If in the ground, they will rise into the hill and leave castings.
Husqvarna 372 with 36 inch bar is all I use to cut down the trees for my sawmill.
I burn all my slab cut offs except for what I burn for firewood in my shop.

Since you have a y on the dust collector might consider a floor sweep for it. That way you could vacumn up the little that's left and send it outside. I believe Rockler has one.

Both of those last two logs were monsters, but that walnut must be a real booger! Kato has met his match...or at least his limit. Good try though.
Consider picking up the log with the skid steer before cutting with the chain saw. Easier on the back and keeps the blade out of the dirt
You ever climbed in and out of a skid steer while holding a log? Especially a large log, for those of us with back issues, the extra work getting in and out of the skid steer makes the advantage not worth it. Not to mention the possibility of slipping and falling makes it a no for me anyway.
Cherry smoked meat- mmmmm.. I like the golden color on that Cherry, and the grain looks awesome.
The next building that you build should be a garage to park all of your tractors and other drivable equipment into so it's all out of the weather.

On the burn pile question, if people truly wanted those slabs and off-cuts for themselves. they'd take the time and effort to get them instead of complaining. Just like with firewood some time ago, remember?

Cherry is a good smoking wood as you mentioned. I save scrap cherry for that purpose, and the pith is good for that. Love your channel. I have a daughter and son-in-law in your neck of the woods. Beautiful up there.

I'm a woodworker, high end tables and cabinets. Agree, we dont like cherry sapwood. It contrasts too much with the wood. Very few sawyers actually remove it though, they leave it up to us to pay the bdft for it then cut it off ourselves.
Well, I've been a furniture maker for quite some time and mostly use cherry as the wood of choice. I do not pick my slabs based on the lack of sap wood or not. In fact, I try to celebrate and incorporate it into my design. Sap wood makes for some interesting designs.

I think that I could use the cherry pith log to use in my bowl making. Don't need a very big piece and I can always cut the pith away and glue the blank back together.

Not useless. I make a lot of cooking utensils and that would be great for it. It's a bit of a pain, but you can work around the checks to find plenty of spoons and spatulas in that.

I'm on the bandwagon supporting other commenters suggesting connecting a floor sweep to the "Y" fitting on the dust collector. Rockler has a dandy one with a handle. I thought of that the first time you showed your new set-up. You could even get a blast gate (manual or powered) to switch it on and off. Very fast and better on your lungs than sweeping. Also, switching from 6" to 4" hose would increase the velocity of the dust extraction. You could bring some hose from the shop to try it. I know it seems backwards, but worked in my wood shop. Hope your procedure took care of any and all issues. Thanks for another look into your daily life.

Tjst one comment about the track loader. I was taught that you always ran the track loader at full motor power. I have worked heavy equipment, my son works heavy equipment and I used to work for a company that rented these units. They need to be at full power to run right.

The dust collection system appears to be working quite well. Maybe you can create a container (that dumps) the sawdust goes in to so you won't have continually scoop it off the ground. Just a thought. Glad to hear all is well with the cancer. Stay safe.

I switched to diesel for blade lube and for the life of my question why i ever waited to do so. What a difference! My dust collector hose is looped and hung on pulleys and runs on a cable to keep it up. I also run my power wires and other wiring on that cable. My milll is 3 phase electric. Just a few things i found to be a huge improvement to my little setup.

The slabs make good firewood.
Something to consider when using the Kato to lift large logs Nathan. Has been my experience that equipment of its size have hydraulics that operate best when the throttle is at a high level. Usually this is true because the hydraulic system operates best at high pump speed. Usually you can pick up heavier loads with confidence because you can ease into the controls to make the lift rather than having to kind of make a weight lifters jerking motion to start the lift. Something to try on your next attempt at large logs. Have a good day.
Nathan, if you’re going to extend your exhaust hose a couple of feet you could use a blast gate as the coupler. That would prevent critters from going in and building a nest during the sawmill downtime.

Hopefully the 1 procedure will be enough . Glad to see you back sawing , but I am jealous of the amount of cherry logs you have . I don’t saw yet but , people around me ( N.E. ) hoard those type of logs or want a huge amount more than they are really worth !

l learnt chainsaw when l was 19 and have used them occasionally up until the age of 66.
l remember that the man who taught me all those years ago said that l would spend as much on PPE as l did on my saw if l was to do it right.
l recommend leg chaps and gloves as a minimum in addition to eye and ear protection. Strong footwear is also important (no flipflops!!)
l happen to think that the world is probably a slightly better place with you all in it, so be safe.

Side question if you might be able to help a fellow sawyer out. How long do you typically air dry before the kiln? I've been just putting mine into the kiln once I get my bdft I need (Approx 2000bdft kiln) and its always good end results. Just wondering the benefits of air dry before and for how long.

Just a suggestion if you can hook up a vacuum hose to the suction side of the dust collector that you can open and close you could use it to clean the floor and blow it into the pile
Also a dump cart outside to catch the saw dust would make it easier to move

I would hang the blower for the dust collector up from the rafters and run hard pipe out the side of the building to vent it. If you rig the hose right it will clear up your floor space.

We had Knotty Cherry and Value Cherry at CWS- Sapwood was allowed on the face - the Value was either painted or a dark stain put on it
a suggestion for the sawdust inlet, if you widen the opening a tad more (similar to a velocity stack) to aid in more going out the dust collector instead of down on the floor due to missing the dust port while cutting.
Those are some monsters.

Just a thought about sawdust and useless slabs… have you considered turning them into pellets and selling them? They would be fantastic for those pellet BBQ’s and pellet stoves.
This is why I could never be a sawyer. My wife would never, ever let me burn that much beautiful wood.
You should get an ibc tote and have the dust blow into that ,then u just pick it up with forks and dump it ,I use them under our firewood processior and it cuts my clean up time by hours

Can you position an IBC tote with the top removed under the dust extractor, that way you could pick up up and haul it with the skidsteer and dump it. Or build a frame and discharge into bulk bags

Oh, and I saw video from a guy that put his sawdust/compost in the garden for the chickens to dig in and spread. He would mix in a bit of corn in to entice them to dig.
If you could pipe your dust pipe against the wall about the center of its travel..then your hose could be suspended from the floor or not .
Draw it out first..and you could I stall a broom outlet
