Lol explains why everytime I try to emulate Instagram makeup, I end up looking like a drag queen. I can't even wear black eyeliner, everything has to have soft tones or my face would look OTT and over done. Even a red lip with brown eyeshadow and liner on me can look like I'm trying too hard.

I do coloured eyelines, it looks very cute. When I use eyeshadows don't use black eyeliner, only blended dusty colours, not black, waterline and mascara. And nude lips. It looks softer, but coloured enough, a bit retro or dramatic.

I am soft classic and have a very hard time with eye makeup 'cause nowadays with instagram and bold eyebrows, everything looks heavy and clownish on me. My eyelids are hooded and my eyebrows heavy, so i found this advice very helpful and i confirmed some things i already do right. I also love to play with hair color, but the brighter the hair, the more minimal my makeup has to become 🤷 , though i dont mind cause i prefer to have clean skin anyway (i focus alot on skincare). Thank you for this video! I've actually been waiting for it 😅

    • @paigec5017
      @paigec5017 5 років тому +9

I have hooded eyes too!! My #1 tip (might have been from ally tbh) is to use eyeliner in the upper waterline and not on top. Don't waste your lid space. The outer crease is a really fun area too to add some tones if you want (warm tones, pink tones to match your look) since they will always be quite subtle anyways. Wispier eyelashes > thick falsies.
I think highlighting the brow bone and arching your eyebrows more can help with the heavy brows if you feel like it's too much for your look but heavy brows can be really playful too.
On the bright side, you can save money and time not spending time doing elaborate eyeshadow looks and instead focus on your skin care and overall makeup.

@@paigec5017 Thank you! It never occurred to me to do the upper waterline cause i have sensitive eyes, but if i find the right product i think it could work 😁 I have done bigger arches on my eyebrows and i agree it helps, is just a bit more grooming to do 😛. I have hooded eyes and heavy brows too. Honestly, it's been a long time since I've bothered much with eye shadow at all! Just defined lashes and well-groomed, slightly filled brows (maybe thin, thin liner) is a better eye look for me. this video just completely validated me!! my signature look is red lipstick, full eyebrows, and long and thick eyelashes. very simple, but I've always felt like I should wear more makeup like other people, even though I always gravitate to this bc I feel so confident - now I know why! I have big eyes and thick eyebrows, so wearing red lipstick balances out my face by drawing attention to the bottom half. I've found the perfect shade as well so I don't feel the need for concealer or anything. this video really explains why heavy makeup doesn't suit me, I always see my friends wearing it at parties and they encourage me to do it too, since it's out of my comfort zone, but it never makes me feel 100%. thank you for explaining why!

Maybe adding ir in just one place and balancing. For example, if you use a more shimmery, defined and strong cat/smokey eye, balance it with a muted red lipstic, and a muted blush as well, so it looks clean, but in the same intensity. Do contour as always, well blended, and You should be ok :3 i've done that for parties and as long as you keep a balance it'll look amazing.

omg the dusty purple color it's exactly correct. buon fresco and antique bronze in the modern renaissance abh palette work really, really well for a soft classic smokey eye. instead of winged liner, use tape to mask off a wing shape before you do your eyeshadow, or using some concealer on your finger or a concealer brush to cut the "line" back in running it from your outer corner towards your temple, and then softening it by dabbing at where the color meets concealer with your finger. I get so many compliments on that sort of look as a soft classic.

This is definitely me and my look. I wear light, classic makeup: natural, radiant foundation and powder, mascara (I have long, naturally curled eyelashes), eyeliner (tightlining is key!) and a red or nude pink-beige lip. If I wear blush, I find it looks better if it is a cream blush and I apply it under either my foundation or finishing powder. It has to really look like a natural flush instead of a flashing sign that I'm wearing blush. Ditto for highlighter: under powder or foundation.

What a good point about the eyeshadow being distributed equally around the eye! I do wonder if it's possible for soft classics to do a more experimental look adapted to their type? Like the way that you did the gamine eyeshadow allowed me to finally wear brighter colors and sharper creases as long as I place it in a round shape and emphasize my smaller eyes with that "staccato" effect. It seems that classics can pull off a balanced rimmed eye look instead. I've talking to a girl online about editorial makeup and bright colors, and she wishes she could try some of these ideas but as a soft classic they don't look right.
Also, are you interested in "editorial" makeup looks at all? Mixed with your advice on balancing and enhancing your face, I've been able to adapt some ideas like a bright eyeliner, painted eyelashes and glitter placement but of course as a gamine I probably have an easier time of it :)

    • @AlyArt
      @AlyArt  5 років тому +17

Thank you for the comment! I didn't quite understand what does it mean editorial makeup? More experimental for soft classics is possible - but they should always try and know the theory - what might happen and why. But overall - the look is a combination of detailes, it's not just makeup, hair - not that strict. But knowing their bone structure they can feel what to add and what to remove from their look.

    • @ellenchomp3552
      @ellenchomp3552 5 років тому +8

@@AlyArt "Editorial" is like artistic magazine makeup for photoshoots that most people wouldn't wear everyday, but I find it fun to take some inspiration from, kind of like some pictures in this: imgur.com/a/0o5dP I'd love to try the "watercolor" looks with a lot of eyeshadow blown out on the face but they don't really work on Gamine, buuuuuuuuut I've taken inspiration for pastel looks from Twiggy and similar bold 60s looks which does suit me when I follor your Gamine instructions! Maybe Soft Classics could try eyes rimmed with gold? I know this kind of makeup isn't really your style though, it's just an interesting thought :)

I love your videos. This makes so much sense, I learned through trial and error that over-the-top is not for me. I’m dark skinned so I have dark lips as well. So I colour my lips only enough to hide their dark colour and make them look soft nude-pinkish. I also use a very natural looking eyeshadow and blush. I hardly ever apply foundation as it makes my skin texture look chalky and flaky, no matter which foundation I use. Today I learned to blend the eyeliner and I can’t wait to try it, can’t wait for this pandemic to get over already so that I can try all the tips I learned from you.

I like to bring out my pretty features somehow, I apply soft blush like peach or light pink when I tried redder blush it just didn't work out , after I'm done with matte eye-shadow I add suitable glitter or shimmer to my lid , I also try to add a soft color with little glitter below my eyes , I wish I can do more sometimes or something very extra but honestly ya it just doesn't work out , I do my eyeliner sometimes tho just thin and not sharp I just go with my eye shape , but I feel like soft classics actually do look good with or without makeup cuz features are elegant we just need soft makeup to show it the way it is , never follow random tutorials from youtubers or instagrammers instead just try to look at your own self and think what could fit u most , n keep it calm as much as possible ...

Oh goodness. I’m soft classic, have hooded eyelids, AND olive skin! The stacks are all up against me 😭😂 But seriously, this explains why heavy makeup always look off on me. My contrast is pretty high (dark hair & eyes, medium skin) but black eye makeup doesn’t do justice for me, neither does gloss, shimmer nor any form of contouring. I stick to matte browns and grays only which works better. Thick lashes look too heavy on me but wispy ones (especially ones that are longer in the middle and shorter towards the ends) look amazing on me! Plus, bottom lashes are a must to off set the weight of my hooded lids. I stay away from blush like the plague because they never look good on me, which I don’t have the same problem with lipstick. For lips, I stick to 3 specific shades & never venture out of them (brown, red and burgundy - nudes look too pink on me, and pink always look awful on me). @@nidaraju4449 I find using brown liquid eyeliner instead of black is easier to pull off as a soft classic, and blending a little bit of eyeshadow in the same shade neatly along the edges helps to soften the line. For the lips, maybe go with a more muted red, one that's close to the shades you find in your own skin so as to tie it in with your face. If you keep everything clean and simple and just focus on those two elements, I think you could pull it off :)

I love your videos and I tell a lot of my lady friends about you! I'm a soft classic myself and I've been looking forward to this video in your series!
Face: After foundation, I use a beauty blender to tap on a cream blush over my cheeks (and lightly on the tip of my nose and chin), then use all over powder to weaken/soften the blush and also set my foundation. I only use contour/highlight for night-time makeup or extra glam.
Eyes: I don't own eyeshadow because they always look too heavy on me, so I use my contour palette's bronzer as eyeshadow so my face's colours are more uniform and consistent. The colours are also softer and easy to build up if I want more colour. I use liquid eyeliner, but I'm gonna try using the blended liner technique I just learned today!
Brows: I switched from an ash-y brow powder to a textured brow gel as the lines are less harsh and more natural.
Lips: I usually just brush my lips with my toothbrush to exfoliate and make them more plump. However I don't use lipstick because again they always feel too harsh on me. I just apply Burt's Bee's pomegranate chapstick to keep my lips hydrated and naturally rouge. My lips are red and full enough to hold up on their own. :)
This whole routine takes me 10-15 minutes every morning and I love being a soft classic!

As a soft classic, I use pinky nudes on my lip and lip liner to slightly overdraw my top lip. Taupe shades work best for my eyebrows; I tend to be a bit heavy-handed with my brows as they are usually the star of my face. I also make sure my complexion is smooth and even and if my eye makeup is subtle, I'll use a light pinky blush on my cheeks. Brown mascara and eye liner usually look best on me!

If you're classic, very classic cloth like simple trench coats and t-shirs that are not loose or tight as well as not much contrast will fit you. I am and although I think it's ugly these outdoor raincoats and simple trecking stuff look good on me like I don't need anything over the top yk and I feel the prettiest with decent make up and a one colour dress without any speciality.
Theatrical romantic will have rather round but I believe a little stronger features (compared to R) than balanced ones(compared to C). If you have round cheekbones(contour looks good) and very shiny and Marilyn Monroe like cloth fits you, you might be T.R. As a soft classic very shimmery cloth is a little bit over the top but not for a TR. Maybe you'll find someone who looks similar to you by searching SC and TR pictures

to be honest, clear eyeliner looks good on me as long as I don't do a wing. For me a little bit of eyeliner wich is thicker towards the outer end of the eye looks the best. To balance it a little I put a little brown eyeshadow or cayal on my lash line. Brown cayal looks amazing if I use it to define my lash lines a little bit more! The best colour is my own hair colour do I usually usw my eyebrow pencil. By putting dark colour, blended very well, under my eye and only in the center looks way better than drawing a line (also it smudges less)
I always wanted to do Korean make up but putting sparkling eyeshadow or white high light *under* my eye looks horrible! However I found that instead I can use a ashy pink or peach colors in general and esoecially under my eye (for aegyo-sal if u know what I mean) and it also conceales dark circles!!
For my skin I geniunely don't use highlighter and contouring. The only thing I have is a decent bronzer and if I use it to contour my nose and cheeks a little bit it's enough. Highlighter doesn't suit me buuut if I put a slight glow by using a lip balm or sth similar it looks even better on me. I hope this could help^^

  • @MerunaIllustration

I like all the looks you suggested Aly! I also love a good eye pencil for a smokey eye. I still struggle with the eyeliner sometimes being too sharp for me. A good tip I found is to keep the pencil sharpened, use it all around the eye, blend it, then add another line (smaller and closer to the eye) all around. Works great w brown/purple pencil too. Then maybe adding a small eyeliner line on top, plus mascara. This works with or without a little eyeshadow. But there has to be somehing on the lips too or SC can look ''unfinished'' so to speak. For a natural look I do almost exactly like you did, but with a nude lipstick.

My signature look is concealer, dusty rose blush (or bronzer mixed with blush slightly contoured but not much and blended), mascara, and a pink-nude eyeshadow on the lid and a cool grey-brown color in the crease, and nude-brown lipgloss. That's all. I always think eyeliner makes me look worse, and I have experimented with so many lipsticks but none compliment me as well as a classic red (or my trusty nude gloss). I agree that matte is a very good clean look for me but I also think some satin can be good but not straight up sparkle. I cant wait to try these looks. Thanks!! Great video

  • @cosmic_lotus_eater

I'm a soft classic and you've helped me so much with this especially with the eyebrows, I'm gonna get mine threaded again now, I started doing them at home by keeping them too bushy just so I could take the focus away from my large eyes but it looks very unnatural now that I see, also about my lips I've always avoided glosses bcz they emphasised my lips.
I didn't like the fact that I have big eyes and lips, and that any makeup looked too much or clownish on me, so stopped wearing any even tho I like to put some colour art on my face every now n then. But now when you explained how we have a balanced elegant features and too much doesn't look right, I've come to realise I need to embrace what I have.
Oh also the make-up look that I find looks really good on me is, basically wearing nothing else but brushing my eyebrows n eyelashes with a clean spooly and wearing a pink /pink nude lipsticks, blotting it off with tissue paper and blurring the edges of my lip a little, just completely Transforms my face in a healthy way.

Love it, heavily suspected I was (Soft?) Classic and this sealed the deal. Tried first with foundation and it became "too much" and oddly elvish/costumey, then I removed all and started without, adding just some under my eyes.
Second attempt left me tied to the mirror for a long time, I feel so very beautiful.
So even if Classic can feel a bit boring at first - lots of potential and timeless style 😍

That being said, my conundrum has been to keep my make-up toned down as my personality is pretty much extroverted extrovert! More is always better in my book! I want sparkle! I want shine! I want "over the top"! So .... I go in with a light touch and add more if the occasion warrants. sigh

I suppose you could look at it as, you don't have to do as much to achieve a lively look if you're a soft classic. I'm not SC and I've noticed the effect with "french girl" makeup, which tends to be Classic or SC. It looks achingly stylish or striking on just the right girl, but when I try the same thing it's simply too quiet and bland. Not a complaint, just to say that Soft Classics have a cool ability to create an emphatic look with just a small extra touch.

I love these videos, they make me realize about so many stuff on me (being a soft classic). My signature look are two actually: No foundation, no concealer, just curve my eyelashes and put mascara on until it seems like I got falsies, peach blush across and very high on my cheeks and nose bridge and same colour on my lips. The other look is less mascara, mate brown or gray eyeshadow on the corner and out of the eye, same brown under my cheeks, nothing on the lips. I am always asked why don't I use a ''pin-up'' eyeliner or red lips and whenever I do, it just doesn't look flattering and people don't get it.
Now I realized that the only on the top things that I do are too much mascara and the excessive brown under my cheeks, but it's ok cause now is a signature of me haha great video ♥️

I believe that I am a Soft Classic, and it is true that I cannot do anything smudgy, over-the-top or dramatic in any way. It looks clownish on me. The way I've refined doing my makeup is a more simple, clean look. Clean skin, no contouring. Nothing flashy looks right on me in any way, ever. I have a very light, but more neutral skin tone but prefer warmer makeup choices and Bright Spring coloring for clothing.
A tinted face oil evens out my skin tone for daily wear (the Maybelline green something one), and doesn't make it look too heavy which many high-coverage foundations can do since they hide my freckles.
A small amount of highlighter above where I put my blush under the eyes, the bridge of my nose, chin, and a tiny bit on the forehead in order to make the skin makeup look not too flat but to have some color back (not too different from my skin tone, and one that doesn't clash with my coloring).
I use a natural colored blush (NARS Orgasm), but lightly on the apples of my cheeks.
A brow tint pen to define my brows, but not overly so since that would look weird on me, clear brow setting gel so that they stay in place (and clean-looking) during the day. I easily look unkempt if my brows aren't maintained with a flattering, classic shape. No trendy eyebrow shapes or techniques for me.
A soft, shimmery eyeshadow with a delicate sparkle I've been playing with recently. I either use just that over my eyelid primer or add a soft matte shadow underneath. Overly smoky makes me (emphasis on me) look dirty and unkempt in a way, so I stick to light shadow. I got Colour Pop Super Shock Shadow in In the Saddle.
I then line my eyes very cleanly with a small flick/cat-eye (not dramatic, just a small one) with a liquid black liner.
I finish off the eyes with mascara that lengthens and curls my lashes (they're very straight), not a clumpy formula. I like the Maybelline Lash Sensational ones in the black colors.
Spray on a finishing spray that you like, I'm just using the one I got from a subscription box.
For lips, I typically keep it light with a warm pink gloss or add some Benefit Posie lip tint (or one of the red ones) before the gloss for some more color.

Yaaay! I was waiting for this one 💕
I don't know if this is my signature look but I love using heavy blush, but if I use it I can't use any other heavy color on the face. So I don't actually contour, I use a lot of blush from the middle of my cheekbones to almost my jawline, but all this *very* blended, it has to look like it's my own skin. I feel I have a lot of left space if I don't do my blush like this, as if my face is not balanced. I also put blush on the nose. For the rest of the face I don't wear lipstick, just lip balm or a really soft and blended color, for the eyes only natural nudes or no shadows and natural eyelashes and eyeliner in brown tones. Eyebrows just follow my natural shape.
But I love experimenting, and when I want to so something more sharp I usually play around with contour and my hairstyle to give the impression my face shape has more edges. Hair is the most important tho, helps hiding the soft curves of the face more than makeup does.

Also when you blowdry your hair use the brush, taking sections at a time. Or just dry it normally, use a straightener, and then do the trick w the spray.
