Del thanks for the puting the videos up, I served my time as a mechanic 20 yrs ago but ended up on the sites. I finally got a FXDF and you gave me the confidence to get back to the tools and to do my own work love the series and thanks again to Penny and yourself
Thank you my friend, it's an honour to be inspiring and get you back to the darkside... now don't go wandering off again.. but seriously, ride safe and enjoy your bike, have a great weekend and all the best, D&Px
I must admit that black paint work really came out as a cracking finish. I'm still gobsmacked with what you can do with a rattle can. I cant wait to see the bike finished and the next project gets rolling!!!! Keep up the good work bro.
Thank you brother, that's very kind of you, it's all in the prep and taking your time to lay it up carefully!
Short and sweet today, looking great, I like the contrast between black and chrome and I think you have achieved just the right blend. Catch you up for the weekend.
Always enjoy your vids Del....full of positivity and warmth. Long may you continue my man. Thank you
Looking good Del. It's all coming together nicely mate, looking forward to seeing it up and running. Penny and you have a good and safe week. Cheers
Thanks buddy, thanks for the kind words, have a fantastic week yourself, D&Px
Sweet!!!!!! It is coming along, that black paint over the chrome turn out very nice. Always a pleasure Take Care
Can't wait to see the finished bike! Looks better every vid. Really professional job. Hats off 👍🏻
Thanks Tom, very kind mate, really looking forward to getting the bike on the road, glad you enjoy the videos mate!

been looking for these pliers for years, just ordered me a pair thanks
Looking good. I'm currently refurbishing a 1200 sportster. Currently looking at getting my crank repaired and trued. Damn that's not cheap.
Looking awesome Del. Sorry I didn't comment on the last video. Been pretty busy here. Love you work and tips. I will remember the tip about the grease on the gasket for the heads when I get ready to do mine. Thank you Del.
Good to hear from you mate, am glad the video could inspire you... good luck with yours!
Really starting to come together! I'm a big fan of the blacked out look.. You've done an awesome job of it! I've been working on a winter Dyna project myself... I'll send you some pictures when its complete!!
Cool mate, that sounds great, I'll look forward to seeing it!
Some of the best vids on UA-cam. Relentlessly interesting ! Keep 'em coming please !
Thank you most kindly Jez.. it's much appreciated..
Locking Good Del. Can’t wait to hear you fire it up!
Great work, the bike will look great when you get it done. Well done to you!
Awesome Video. I have a very old open Ender with no markings on it & it fits on the rear wheel nut with no play in it... I am definitely buying that Wiha wrench pliers classic parallel jaws. Penny & You Dell have A Wonderful Week and Ride Safely.
Great plan Paul.. in real terms you'll probably find it more use on the fork leg tops.. you can never get a socket on them without removing the bars... and as flr the top yoke (tripple tree) centre nut... not many people have a socket that big..!!!! its a great one fits all tool..! Ride safe buddy, and have a good week.. Del.
That looks sweet Del...... Very nice work, cant wait to see it finished......😎
Bikes looking great, can't wait to see it on the road!
Great work Rat Cuz. It's looking good and well done. Have a great week, stay safe and lots of love to you both :)x

Hi Kevin, thank you Sir... may have a better plan for the vinyl wrap, but all will be revealed, always trying to do the best we can and keep it fresh and entertaining!
Excellent as always. Love the way you pre-empt the trolls. LOLOL
Thanks buddy, well they are rather predictable aren't they aye, bless 'em!
Hi Del . Yep use the Wiha parallel water pump pliers on the top fork bolts on the sportster and the heritage saved time taking the bars off and no damage the chrome , looking forward to the wrapping
Hi Tony.. many uses, and all will save the usual butcher marks we end up with aye..! a great tool to be able to reach and grab in many situations aye buddy.. .. chat soon buddy, long overdue for catch up aye.!
👍👍👍.
See you next time indeed! 😁
Great Video Del looking 👌🏻👏👏👍
Looking great del
Just me but I would go with good old Beach Bars .Still looks great can't wait for the next update
Cool bars Robbie, but not my taste sir, i so much prefer baddass drag bars for a stretched out ride position..!
Bike is looking good!
Great tool, I've got to get one. Thanks again
Channel is still just as good now as when i started watching you many many moons ago now
Thanks Mark, Business and usual mate..!
Lovely work, 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I use a washer to take up slack on the open end spanner. To do axle up tight
a quality open end spanner of the correct size should be a tight fit - an adjustable of any sort is never a better option , that's why the bolts get rounded .
In the last episode he fitted the exhaust! Surely that was the time to use a torque wrench to tighten the nut up!
(P) Mmm I can smell the GT85 from here 😀 Looking good 👍🏻
Yummy smell aye.. Like Fabreze for the garage..!
I think for my next bike I’ll get an older Harley and fix her up. Great video!
Go for it mate!
Looking very nice
Should have tighted the back wheel nut b4 you put the exhaust back on earlier, then touqued up!
But maybe then we wouldn't have got to see the amazing pliers!
coming on well now, good tip about the fins i will try that. i used to use a strip of emery tape to take the gap up when using an open-ended spanner on wheel nuts, acts as a kinda shim but grips too (pre fancy grip things of course). moto club faro t-shirt, yeah got one the same, did that run in 2002 Newcastle to faro on a 1976 z900a4 too hot to ride some days. intrested to watch the wrap go on, i want to change the colour of mine too.
nice........Faro Portugal.....
Thank God!!!!!! you explained the pipe wrench flat jawed spanner :)
I was thinking - No - What the F**k did I just see Delboy do!!!!
Phew... will have to get me a pair of those now :)
if your going to pick one thing to use a torque wrench on when working on your bike... PLEASE use it on your wheel axles. Not this tool. Your begging for it to either pinch the wheel bearings inner race and have them explode from over torquing, or under torquing and having it fall off from vibrations.
Thank you Del...nice to see its coming together .
Great stuff as all ways dell.
Looks great buddy, well worth all that time and effort, great job, regards Stu
Thanks Stu, great to hear from you buddy.. hope life is good.. soon be spring aye.!
Looking good, love that big v-twin engine. I always thought the rear wheel spindle was one of those nuts worth using a torque wrench on.
Of course, it you feel better doing that, then go for it, there's nothing wrong in that, and they will give you a torque range to apply in the manual.!
Very Nice !!!!
Love the channel!!
Great vid as usual, but it’s been awhile since we’ve all seen Penny Pitstop. A big shout out to your better half.
Thank you Buddy.. Penny's fine, always working in the back ground and helping with the editing and admin of the videos... she says Hi, and thanks for your kind thoughts.. !D&Px
Need more Delboy's Garage!
👍
Nice one guys. Getting there del & Pennz . Hope I spelt that correctly 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Paul, thats very kind buddy, and yep.. that'll do nicely..lol!
We are dealing with the professor here gentlemen. Great video. Needed to change out steering stem and bearings, your video helped me achieve the job. Great channel
You have a meticulous eye for detail!
Keep the excellent videos coming 👍
Luv it
S100 Engine Brightener will bring out that black engine. Or TMF go to ACF 50 does the trick as well
ACF50 attracts grit and dust, it's not really an engine detailer, works ok on powder coated shiney engine finishes (until they get dirty of course then you can't wash it off), but you're right ont he S100 and also, if you're old enough to remember, good ol' Armourall, but as a great cheap fix GT85 works brilliantly on wrinkle, it seals it so the water beads off, and makes it look fresh and shiney!
Moonfleet41 I’ll have to check out GT85
Hello Del, When i was in the army, the captain asked me (in French) : Vous parlez anglais ? I said Oui un peu , Ok, vous me ferez les chiottes à la brosse à dents ( Ok get a tooth brush and clean the toilet ) wath a morron.
Sorry Del but to day the only way i used a tooth brush is for my thoot.
Maybe i’ll change my mind when i get an Harley.😀
But like always nice job Professor Del.
Nearly there guys, top job, those Wiha pliers are the dogs bo....is, going to get a set. Got out in Freddie Fatboy yesterday, went 50 mile down the coast, it was spitting & farting initially , I think it was due to non use for a while, just needs more miles I hope, , do you recommend using an injector cleaner / additive at all ? All the best to you both x 👍👍😎
Hi Geoff, great to hear you're back out again... and no, just fresh petrol mate, work a few tankfuls through it and it'll be just fine!... it'll encourage you to get out more often and get riding when you can! D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 many thanks both x👍👍😎
You were right Del, I couldn't believe that you had just used a set of pipe grips on your rear wheel nut!!
Are you just going for experience and feel on the right torque?
Not pipe grips Paul, Smooth jawed ratchet grips with parallel jaws, made for hex heads, pipes grips have tapered jaws with teeth... these will never slip, or damage the nut... and you can torque your wheel nut up if you choose.. you'll just need to remove the exhaust like i said.! Use these, Torque to "FT" and fit split pin. job done.!
@@Moonfleet41 Hi Del, love the series, i did cringe a little when I thought it was a pipe wrench but you obviously knew you would get a few comments so took the time to explain the tool. I agree with the FT aproach as you would have to back off your torqued nut to line up the hole for the split pin. Rob
@@bobbyboy723 Yes indeed Rob, and if you're interested, and you're ever really concerned about precise torque, but you have a castilated nut and split pin arrangement, then rather than back off to line it up and mess up the torque, then use a thick copper washer (or aluminium) under the nut and it allows it to crush and give you the exact torque and still line up... :-)
Awesome attention to detail mush. Is there any chance that the vinyl wrap will make that ducktail fall off? 🤣😂👌
Oi, you leave my ducktail alone lol that's an iconic feature of half a dozen classic Harley models and I happen to love the look lol.. but seriously, these bikes are a specific design, they've a 34 degree fork rake, which needs an elegant back end to balance out visually, if you do a bobbed fender on the back, they look like a half arsed chopper where someone couldn't be bothered to do it properly! Stick with it mate, you'll see!
Moonfleet41 I’m not having it mush. I reckon it would be better with some 16” apes and a Bob job, but either way, I’m really enjoying your work and look forward to the final version. If we all had the same tastes, life would be boring, wouldn’t it?
cool..... 3 1/2 weeks till spring rides
Not long now Bob...!
Would have figured you as more of a Triumph man.
I love them both Chris..!
Heya Del! Trapped in my house due to the fun and games of a pandemic, I figured what BETTER TIME to yank off the tank and shine up the fins on my Dyna. It's the silver powdercoat, rather than the black that you have, but I'm thinking it should work roughly the same. So,
Wet / Dry Block (400.. doesn't seem to any such thing available as 800 grit) - check.
GT85 (or something comparable as it's unavailable here in the States - went with WD40 Specialist Dry Lube) - check.
Toothbrush - check.
Strange yellow solution to scrub with.... ?????
My question is what is that yellow stuff you're using? Some type of household detergent I'm assuming? Whatever it was it did a remarkable job on your bike's fins to get that disgusting grime off!!
Hi buddy, you're gonna laugh, but the strange yellow solution is just dish washing detergent (washing-up liquid) in hot water, a seriously strong solution though, and it melts all the black road grime off and brings the aluminium up bright and shiny killing the oxidisation at the same time... it always makes people doubt it to say it's dish soap, but look what that stuff does to a roasting tin or baking dish that's got food burned on to it, and it's the same on your engine fins, the grime is burned on, so give it a go, it won't damaged or chip the powder coat, if you just go at it gently with a toothbrush, it does take a while, so have a bit of patience and you'll make a good job of it! Good luck with it.
@@Moonfleet41 Ok perfect! Will do man!! :) Amazing advice.
Looking good 👌 are you going with a black seat? Or something that will stand out? Have you already decided what colour/affect it’s being wrapped in?
Still deciding on the bodywork finish.. but yes, the seat will be black .! Brown seats are for nanna's bicycle..!!
Cool Tool!
Noice 😎👍
As ever great video Need some advice what Torque wrench for Japanese bikes I am lost what to go for
No such thing as a "torque wrench for Japanese Bikes" mate, any more than there is a left hand screw driver Lol... a torque wrench is a torque wrench, and for any bike application, if you want to buy one wrench to cover most jobs.. then look for a 3/8 drive wrench rated from at least 12Nm, to 110Nm if you can.. plenty of options out there mate... have a shop around.! Good luck. Del.
@@Moonfleet41 yeah seen that after I posted lol Thanks Del still looking was 1/2" or 3/8" then was looking minimum torque setting for my bike So you have helped Del thanks and Thank you for the quick response need brake pads before a trip in 2 weeks and of course that leads to copper grease then a bloody torque wrench already did the brake fluid. Would never have attempted any of this until I seen your channel. Of course if you need help with guitars I am your man lol
OH! one other thing - regarding the wheel nut - My last guy that worked on my bike (before the days of ME working on it thanks largely to YOU!!!) told me about the problem of dodging the muffler to get at the wheel nut... he actually took the axel out and flipped it around and so the wheel nut ends up on the other side, and nothing blocking it. What are your thoughts on that? It's still like that to this day on my FXD!
Hi again buddy... thats a daft thing to do.. and you'll understand that the moment you have to take the wheel out, and need to remove the exhaust to do so..!
The factory designs it so that you can slide the axle out the left side without having dramas....the nut is easy enough to loosen off, then hold the nut in place as you slide the axle back through...easy.. ! I guess it becomes relevant when you take your back wheel out a few times and want to make the job as easy as it can be....and reversing the axle makes it harder.! i can't see any benefit what so ever in fitting it form the right..!! Just my take on it.!
looking good , can i ask why you use thread lock but not lock nuts ? cant wait to see what wrap you have chosen
Hi Mike, Im assuming you mean the ONE single nut on the headlight bracket... thats a fine thread imperial nut, and the correct nut fitted by the factory.. a little threadlock for belt and braces..! maybe a change of plan on the vinyl wrap, and for the better too.! stick with it.!
@@Moonfleet41 Stick with it lol Vinyl Wrap love it ha ha
Nice job del. and not one scrach..
Not a single one Steve..! :-)
What exactly did you coat the fins with after sanding? Thanks.
Just some GT85 mate
Congrats on the project’s magnificent success so far, Del... handy Wiha tool there! Btw, will you be throwing some wax on those newly painted parts? From Berlin, Gary. 👍🏍👍
Hi Gary.. Great to hear from you buddy, Globe trotting as usual i see.!! Once the bike is all finished, it'll get fully detailed and buffed like a new pin..! lots of dust and debris to land on it yet, so no point till its ready..!
Moonfleet41 gotcha!
Looking good, Del. You da man, as they say.
What did you spray on the engine fins after cleaning them?
As I said in the video, a little silicone brings them up nice and black and shiny, or some GT85 if you don't have any, that works also, plus it adds a thin layer of protection as well.
Heya Del!! These vids are SO looked forward to my friend. I'm going to be sad when this one's done. But - was wondering about something - That spray you used - you said it was silicone? Won't that trap dirt and grime when you hit the road?
"GT85" buddy... try some on the black wrinkle finish of your Streetbob...it works like the HD 100+ treatment you pay ten times as much for at the dealer...lol!
Can you do a video on how to properly wash the bike and detail?
Popped a little detailer trick in this video for you buddy..!
Moonfleet41 I saw that. Thank you! Doing it right now on my Sportster
I am just so impressed with this refurbishment and its results that its got me looking for my own foxdawg to do the same. However theres not that many of them available downunder in oz and still holding a pretty price for them at around AU$12-15.000. Doubt tho I'll find with Brembos, internal mods etc. But will be keeping a lookout and no doubt should one come up there will be fierce competition for it after your lot of vids. And yea I like the white which is ever rarer. Have black Night Train and busa (for sale) in the toyroom. Just curious how diff would you say the ride is between an FXSTB and a FXDWG? Just love your work man. You have an open invite to come downunder (Melbourne) and have a free place to stay in...theres an FXSTB waiting for ya to tinker on lol.
Thank you so much for that kind offer mate, My Brother lives in Brisbane, and i need an excuse to come for a holiday at some point.. just need to clear the decks here first and life is 100mph every week these days... maybe once this season is out of the way i can see how hard it would be to plan something..!!!
The Dyna Wide Glide and the Night Train are just about the two most matched bikes the MoCo ever made with different frames...they are so similar its untrue, when you get the anorak book out and start comparing dimensions they are so alike.. Yours is inch and a half lower seat height (but thats due to the daft pillow seat that mine came with), they are all but the same length and weight, (300KG), with wide glide front forks and 21x2 front rims (oh, and the glorious ducktail fender too)... the only other bike that had similar dimensions and was a similar match was the Softail Springer... and they are cool as penguin p1ss..
The only thing that will make them ride a tiny bit different is the fork rake, and only if you are really sensitive to it... the Dyna has 34 degree forks, and yours has 32... but every other Dyna has 29, and other softails too.. so it will corner about the same (which is "lazier" than a regular big twin), but other than that, id say most riders couldn't tell them apart on the road.. like i said, anorak stuff mate.
They are a rare bike here too, specially with a 1450 Twin cam motor, and a carb too... most Twin Cams are EFI, and that makes this a rare old bike.. but ive never been one for stary eyes about rarity,, i hate the white paint scheme, and its coming off pretty soon.. doesn't do the bike much justice INHO, and maybe what im going to do with the bodywork will upset the purists....but its justr paint, and nothing that can't be painted again..!
Thanks again mate, take care and have a good week..
Del.
Nice work Des, Still not convinced on using a shifty on the spindle nut. Why is the open ender so loose?
Did you not see how rock solid tight the smooth jaw grips were? the more you push on them the more they grip..NO open end spanner would do that... and that was the correct size for the nut..15/16ths... all open end spanners have freeplay, thats why they're a crap choice, and when you have no other choice, then the grips are the perfect remedy..!
That's coming along nicely! I've got a question for you , hopefully I'll sort out the problem. Basically after a small "incident" my bike was dropped on the left hand side, clutch lever snapped and the gear shifter slightly bent into the primary ( if that makes sense), now the problem is that it doesn't engage in fourth gear and 5, 6th. Other gears work fine , my question is , got any ideas? Thanks, Gabriel
Hi Gabriel... ok, Harley Davidson im assuming.?.. and ive had that job land on my bench a few times.. its a common result of forcing the shifter into the motor... What often happens is that the shifter shaft gets distorted in its bushing, and that just jams it in position and doesn't move the selector enough to engage the gears fully....
In two cases i was lucky enough to be able to just muscle the shifter shaft back out so the boot end came away from the casing and it released the jammed inner rod and went back to normal... so try that first.. for goodness sake don't just bend the shifter itself.. Its cast alluminium, you'll simply break it off... i took it off so the shaft was sticking out of the casing, placed a 12mm stepped ring spanner over the end, and gently "tweaked" it backwards to straighten out the slight bend... it only needs maybe a 2mm bend to start binding... then pop the shifter back over the spline and see if its back out in its correct position?...
Now if this doesn't work for you, and in one case it didn't for me.. the bike had gone down real hard and sheared the boot end of the shifter off...it also cracked the casing.. so it was a matter of new parts fitted and job done...(very expensive) But hopefully you can tweak that shaft backwards to straighten the lever.. .and it should then shift through all gears nicely again...
Good luck with it my friend, let us know how you get on... Fingers crossed for you. ..
Del.
@@Moonfleet41 yeah it's a late model Dyna , I'll give it a try , thanks for the quick response appreciate it 👍
Why don't you fix the rust on the frame? Surely that's more important than the other cosmetics even if it's just some rust removal and a quick touch up.
Too busy filling false copyright claims
Hey Del. I've scratched the swing arm, trying to remove a rounded off nut holding on the passenger pegs. I'm not worried about the battle scar, since it's part of the life of my bike. But, I want to stop the scratch from rusting. Should I just brush some primer in there? Or will it need a bit of topcoat too?
normal primers are porous so will need some type of top coat
Cheers @@Michie1391! I'll take a look at some scratch repair kits, they should have the topcoat I need. I really have scratched right through to the metal.
