- Pete’s here to talk tone, guitars, amps & life as a musician
Welcome to the show! It is our great pleasure to welcome our good friend Pete Thorn to the show. Canadian ex-pat / longtime Los Angeles resident Pete is a professional guitar player having toured with artists including Melissa Etheridge, Don Henley and Chris Cornell. He also has a fantastic UA-cam channel where he gets busy with some of the best gear demos you’ll find anywhere.
Pete was on tour in the UK with The Classic Rock Show during February and March 2023, so we were able to steal him for an afternoon to chew the fat over his current rig, Suhr signature guitar and plenty more besides…
Enjoy the show!

The Ultimate “put the audience first” anecdote: I took my younger brother Brian to a Rush concert in Traverse City, MI. He was very small, standing next to me in front of Geddy Lee’s mic spot. Geddy looked down took my brother’s hand, “Help him up, I don’t want him to get hurt.”
Brian sat on stage, a real front row seat, the entire show. I’ll always have a soft spot for Geddy Lee.
It’s the simple things in the midst of all the chaos that really are special
That’s an awesome story!
I worked front of stage for a few years in college and when I was teaching my 12 year old daughter about going to shows I taught her to learn people's names that work there and let her know that they were there to make sure she was safe and had a good time. When she was 13 and going to shows by herself and getting friends to go with her she was a veteran and understood where to be and how to get there and that the show was the thing, so when a friend wasn't feeling well and getting a little over-heated she could call out to the front of stage guy by name and ask him for some water or for a little help. She told me her friend was AMAZED that she would even consider that. When she told me I was proud of her.
Everyone SHOULD know that the show is about the audience enjoying the show. And everything that gets in the way of that should be set aside.
Geddy is an ace human being. I've never heard anything remotely negative about him.
I’m a massive Rush fan and from everything I read, Geddy and Alex are top dudes
Pete Thorn is awesome. This guy is an exemplar of tone and taste.
I always feel I come away with something when I watch a Pete Thorn video. He has a gift at making you feel you have something to offer.
"an exemplar of tone and taste" Tone and taste it's a very subjective matter, I am not sure you can talk that way
Isn’t that the point of comments? If ‘subjective’ isn’t allowed, there would *be* no comments, or they’d be really dull.
“Pete Thorn talks and plays guitar”. Yippee.
He absolutely is. Your choice of nouns is exemplary in this instance.
The two youtube channels responsible for almost every pedal on my board coming together. Awesome.
Pete seems like such a genuinely nice (and talented) man! Wonderful show today.
No seem about it. He totally is!
Had so much fun visiting you dudes, thanks for the hospitality, and the prompt first aid! 😂❤🩹
Just finished watching, and that was a masterclass in how to be a genuine, grounded , awesome guy who knows what he talks about and can convey it in the most awesome way. Thank you 👍
Caught the show last year in Yeovil. It was everything you said it is. My non musician wife came away impressed with the vibe, yup, that’s praise indeed. Catch ya next year 😎🎶🎵👍
Was great of you to take time out while on tour to play and chat with these guys!
Much Love and Respect! And now I will cary super glue and spray adhesive!
Pete is the consummate professional and a true gentleman. What a treat to see all 3 of you on one set.
In 2015 I built a Suhr replica from my Fender HSS Strat from Pete's Helix demo back then. He had a white Suhr HSS. So I asked on the Gear Page what Electronics, Pickups, etc. John Suhr and Pete Thorn replied to thread. So I purchased everything they suggested, the Pots, Thornbucker Plus Humbucker, V60 singles, treble bleed, etc. Out of all my guitars, this is what I play the most. Thanks to John and Pete for taking the time to talk with their fans.
That's so cool! Yes, both are upstanding, affable gentlemen on TGP.
Great story and shows how open m, genuine and transparent they both are. Sharing knowledge with the guitar community 👍
Can you share a link? Very interestee to try myself.
@@Javier-qk7ms The gear page only goes back to 2019. My thread was in 2016.
That’s a cool story! I’m glad you’re happy with your guitar. 🤘
I've been watching TPS from the very beginning. Coincidentally being a fellow Canadian I have been following Pete's career from the very beginning. I've been waiting for this moment and it's actually happening. My worlds are colliding and I'm loving it 🤯
I still havent forgiven myself for missing a Pete Thorn gig 10 miles from my front door the other week. I just didnt know about it until his video when it was over 😅😮💨
@@davidyoung8875 if it's so boring why are you hear watching it? or are you just being a keyboard warrior and hating from your bedroom. Talk about being bored 😂
@@davidyoung8875 You get back what you give out in life. If you give negativity, the world will give negativity back. You’ve got to be the change 👍🏻 have a good weekend mate.
Pete's dozen or so 10 minute videos on how to play Eruption. 2008? Something like that. A few hundred of those views were from me :D
same
The thing about Pete’s gear reviews is that he shows us how this gear could be genuinely useful , musically, In an arrangement. He’s a great musician who happened to choose guitar. He could have chosen piano and fallen in love with jazz. It almost doesn’t matter what he chose. He hears music, in a very complete way.
His explanations are always useful. He has a video on using a compressor, and it's the ONLY one I've ever watched where the effects he was getting were a) audible and b) understandable.
I genuinely think Pete is one of the most kind, down to ear rock dudes on the Tubes. Thanks for hosting him, and @petethorn, thanks for being an inspiration to us guitar players!
Thank U!!!!
Awesome to see Pete on TPS. Many thanks to you all.
Despite his modesty, Pete really is one of the best today in my opinion. His musicality just puts him on such a different level. I wish he was part of a permanent line up putting out original songs - it would be great to see him as a full blown popular rock hero, with his songwriting as much to the fore as his technical chops. Hope he finds that alchemy with others at some Point
Pete is genuinely one of the nicest people you'll ever come across....
I’ve always had respect for Pete and his body of work but this has given me insight into just how fantastic of a human being Pete Thorn is as well. Cheers to a great episode and guest!
Thanks so much!!
About 15 minutes in, I am absolutely LOVING how Pete is clearly just excited to have a gear geek out! D&M can barely get a word in over him noodling and going through everything
Great that the TPS & Pete's schedule allowed this ti happen! Awesome episode my friends Mick Dan ,,, & Pete, hope the flu has eased off !!
.
(glad to have been help in setting this up)
Pete is one of the nicest guys on the planet and he is such a humble guitar player but my god, he plays incredibly. What a huge talent. Thanks for having him join you. Love to you all.
Has anybody else noticed the proportion of TPS guests from Western Canada is exceptionally high? Pete Thorn (Edmonton), Simon Jarrett (Vancouver), the Brothers Landreth (Winnipeg), Devin Townsend (Vancouver), plus I’m sure I’ve missed a few. Kinda cool how much Canadian content there is from a show based in England, and oddly all of it is from west of the Great Lakes. All this to say, TPS should do a Canadian Tour ;)
Ariel Posen....
This episode will go down as one of the all-time best episodes of TPS ever... talking about inspiration and motivation and then getting to see where it all takes you and how it impacts your journey as a musician... this is an episode of 'how to get it RIGHT'...!!! Well done to all involved in the production of this video ... y'all nailed it...!! Just WOW....
Pete’s such a humble, cool guy. Absolute beast with incredible tone, incredible touch, and incredible chops. Studio guitarists, are on another level
As a nod to the Classic Rock Show the audio quality is the best of any gig I have ever been to. Saw them a couple of weeks ago and Pete's tone was incredible. I was barely 20 feet from his amp and it was a real joy to hear.
Heya Simon! :)
@@PeteThorn Hi Pete. Great video with the TPS guys.
Had I known Pete was playing I would defo have gone. Know the tone would’ve rivalled Alex lifeson or something. I’m gutted I’ve missed it
Just realised there’s Scotland dates left let’s goooooo
@@Seanaldinho90 Hi, Sean, the Classic Rock Show is brilliant. The audio quality is excellent and Pete's tones are epic.
Wow, great show today guys! Thanks for getting Pete in as a guest. Such a cool guitar player. I just have to mention "Rock-Tips" as a remedy for sore fingertips. As they say it on their website; it is medical adhesive, which is designed specifically for use on skin. It's like a fluid band aid. I've used it myself for years, and it really is good. It will last the gig, and it is not getting in the way of feeling the strings. Recommended! Cheers, Thor
Pete is one my favorite youtube guitarists. I know he hocks gear, but he writes original songs for each one and they're all good enough to be on an album. I just wish he'd put out albums with all those tunes! Thanks, gents!
Three of my favourite people, talking about a lot of my favourite things....Heaven!
Pete Thorn is just so positive and a fabulous guitarist. TCRS was excellent; saw it in Newcastle and thoroughly enjoyed his clinic before the show!
have to be honest - I was flinching every riff Pete played after he glued it back together... well done for persevering!
Pete is not in the shadow of these great artists he played with. He is their shadow that they need so badly to be great. What an amazing player.
Three amazing gentlemen expressing their passion for music... what could be better?
Witness in person
The talk about sticking with it and trusting the process is truly inspiring. Personally I get upset with myself when I see others further along in their journey in music but I just have to remind myself that I’m just at a different place. Truly inspiring to hear it from you guys ❤
I love that this wasn't just a gear video. The mindset stuff Pete was talking on was the real gem here.
so THIS isn't an AD for skinny jeans? Seriously though this is great! 3 of my favorite guitar dudes that I love hanging with every week! Thank you Mick and Dan and Pete Thorn! You all rock!!!
Pete is the ultimate sideman. And easily one of the best gear demonstrators on youtube.
Pete Thorn! He, Andy, Gearmanndude, and Burgs were my four horsemen of tone purveyors when I was a budding bedroom guitarist many years ago before the algorithm existed.
09:23 & 09:39 - It's the opening TPS chord!!
Yes, just listening to this now, and I was wondering if anyone else recognized it. Dan & Mick you didn’t even react, haha!
The edit over Pete’s “Land Before Time” bit had me spittake my coffee. Amazing episode fellas
Thanks guys for featuring Pete. Not only a great guitarist but has the ability to explain his gear in detail and makes it easy to understand. My 3 favorite guitarists on one set!
Love this!! Pete is just awesome!! Thanks to Dan and Mick for a great interview!!
Pete is, to me, the modern rock guitar hero that can play anything and writes incredible music. His Solo recordings bring me back to feeling the music.
Pete is so wonderful. Love his YT channel, very personable, and a killer guitarist. Love the way he presents information.
“And here comes the ice pick in the forehead”… Nice one Mick! Miss FZ so much.
That trick for stage fright works well for public speaking. It helps to focus on how you might be able to help other people by what you say. It's not really about you, which is such a relief!
Definitely the best guest on TPS. You have had many great guests but Pete's playing, explanation, and just sincere way he comes across it's just so refreshing! He lives close by here in Los Ángeles. One of the best tour guitar players in the world! Thank you Mick, Dan and Pete for a great show!
Thanks man!!
This episode just made my day. The joy that three of you share is just magnetic.
What a lovely, lovely man. A beautiful smile, an easy laugh and a love for music. Blessed we are today.
Love you guys!this episode is fantastic absolutely love Pete Thorn ! Been a massive fan since I saw him on tour with Chris Cornell in 2007 and several times again after that!
Humble. Talented. True. Real. Legend.
It´s always pleasure to listen to Pete Thorn playing guitar as well as talking musician´s life... great episode of TPS!👍
Man, oh, man. This is a show among shows. Did I mention how wonderful he is as a person! What a guy! You two aren't so bad yourselves! Lot's of love here in the TPS multiverse (which is not a multiFX unit!).
Pete Thorn, Phil X, Joey Landreth, Ariel Posen, Ian Thornley... funny how some of your favourite players are Canadian! Go Hosers!
I'm waiting for Chad....
That 107dB at the end of the riff around 16:30ish was killer....reminds me why I needed to move further back in the audience after some time. Nothing like being up close in a rock show though! Unfortunately, I say - "huh, what was that?" increasingly often since those youthful days...thanks for sharing today Pete...keep shining.
What a great episode! I was half delighted when Pete played the actual parts of VH songs and half worried for Mick (it seems like Dan was in a trance so I don’t think he was concerned lol). Fingers crossed you didn’t get demonetized but for us it was a real treat!
Pete Thorn rocks! What a great player, total pro, and such a nice guy. Good luck with the finger at the show/tour, and he really should do voice work.
Pete Thorn helped with my sound by answering 2 questions in the comments on his videos, I will never forget it, and smile everytime I play now :)
Thanks Pete!
I love when you guys bring in such humble passionate people.I love musicians and the mojo they give off.
whenever i get in a rut and need to be inspired, i play my amp LOUDLY, and all that gives me all the inspiration i need.
After watching many of these pedals shows, I just got the best piece of advice about headspace and nervousness/self conscious. I am the type that I can become very accomplished in practice but then get nervous when playing in front of people. Moving the shift towards how do I want the people to feel/enjoy the music in a selfless way, never knew why I didn’t think about that
Thank you for giving us more time to hear Pete talk about music, guitars, and gear. Always a pleasure.
I went to one of the Classic Rock shows a few weeks ago. It was epic! Pete nailed it! The sound was great and the show was well worth it. A great night out!
This absolutely made my Friday - 3 of my favourite humans, all in the same room. Pete's a gentleman, and it shows through all the time. I may have to watch this again :O)
Pete Thorn... Legend. We're lucky to have this man.
TPS and Pete, the best people to talk about pedals and guitar sounds, I love it!!! Thanks guys!!
We've seen sweat, we've seen tears, and now you've drawn blood. Great show as always. Pete is fantastic. What an enlightening conversation. I saw the thumbnail this morning and was looking forward to the show all day and it did not disappoint.
Yes!! Pete is such a beast. Seems like a genuinely lovely fella too. If he recorded full track versions of his intro jams, I'd buy that. I'd buy a lot of that! 👀🙏. Dude always sounds incredible.
His music is everywhere..got some killer stuff out.. instrumental guitar rock that's fantastic
@@ericwarrington6650 No doubt, but I don't think he's really, fully recorded many of his intro jams? Unless he has and I'm not finding them. But they seem to be these throw-away improvs he does for whatever he's demoing at the time. Great because it showcases the inspiration he's taken from the gear, but 95% of them, I'm sitting there thinking 'This is just a good song. Please, make it so!' 😝😅💭👀
@@SeagoGuitarist I'm sure you are right and that's a great idea
Stumbled upon this late. Will be watching again no doubt..what a joy to listen too. Even his voice. Brilliantly done well done 👏
the gov't mule and seattle thing would've been one helluva show....super cool. so glad you were able to host Pete on the show.
❤ Pete, he puts all his class in classic rock. His compositional skills are truly inspirational too
I’ve just had a lil rough patch but your show brought many smiles. Pete seems lovely and I love you guys. The show got me through lockdowns and more. ❤️🎸✌🏻
All the best to you Kevin!
@@PeteThorn thank you for your kindness. I watched your live stream recently and hope your feelin better!
I’m a new subscriber looking forward to exploring more of your content. 🎸✌🏻❤️
I first heard Pete way back in his videos where he was breaking down Eruption, he’s just got ‘it’ when it comes to that rock feel. That was a great chat lads. And the colour of that PT sig is just mesmerising. Hands down one of the best looking modern superstrats i’ve seen.
Hey TPS crew! Hey Mick and Dan! Glad you had Pete on the show he's an unbelievable person and player. Hope you're feeling better Pete! Be safe and enjoy the rest of your tour! Catch u in next live stream!
I know I've reached my midthirties when a TPS show pops up and i exactly know how I'm gonna spend my Friday night.
Two of my favorite shows in ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video. He is absolutely so talented and humble. Cheers from Canada
Pete's a great guy.
Thanks Joe!
Copyright strikes be damned! Great show!
Just the best show this week and lovely to hear from Pete who just has the most lovely vibe about him. Thank you.
@PETETHORN such amazing advice Man thank you for your contributions to the rock an roll world. You are a living legend
“It’s monophonic with an octave on it”
A poet and didn’t even know it!
Pete is such an amazing player and even more incredible person.
I've admired his channel for quite some time now.
Such a good TPS episode!
Pete's vlogs right after Chris Cornell passed genuinely left me with a profound imprint and deluge of emotional appreciation.
He characteristically just comes across as an authentically unapologetic kind soul IMO.
Bravo!
Cheers lads!
✌🤟🤘
🎸
One of my dreams finally came true !!! 🎉🎊😀
Two of my favorites, TPS and Pete Thorn! LOVE IT!!! ❤
Dropped a set of Thornbuckers V1 in my PRS 24 with a rewire and it really opened up that guitar a ton. I can't say enough about those pickups. Love ya Pete! Love ya TPS!
Pete is super cool. I saw him with Chris Cornell. He handed me the setlist after the show. 🤩
Thanks for making me figure out how to spell *Deeflexx* panels! There was a brief mention around the 8:00 mark, and it took a few web searches to find it. 🙂
We love you guys !
Pete is really inspiring !
I'd forgotten that Pete Thorn was Canadian, right up to the point where he described Jimi Hendrix saying "soar-ry" and turning his amp down. 😄🇨🇦
Same! I don’t think I ever knew that he was Canadian… until that same exact point in the video. And then I was like, “Hmmm, I didn’t know he was Canadian?”
I discovered Pete trough youtube, as they mentioned, but guitarist in youtube are a diamond dozen, Pete is one of those that's truly special.
Amazing! What a great guy and accomplished musician!
This was a fantastic show. Around minute 102, my opinion is pete is definitely way up on the list of best guitar players in the world.
damn dude,
i’m still half way into the video and i am already digging this so much.
thanks to all of you
cheers from Portugal
That feedback @ 6:35 is the best sound I've heard in ages. Extra epic!!!
Canadian high heh heh heh!
Pete is an absolute legend and a lovely bloke too. 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
Fantastic episode! Love what both you and Pete do and it's great to see you in the same room again.
Pete On the pedals show 😮very cool 😎 love it.
Brilliant interview and love hearing what Pete's been up to and his philosophy on pursuing music as a career, and most importantly, as a passion.
Oh my God, I love that! Pete is my hero…
Love this fellas! 3 amazingly passionate and talented guys in their absolute element. Literally bleeding for the craft!
Love seeing these three gents together. Stellar content once again, boys.
So much knowledge and talent in that room! Just awesome.
Awesome show! Pete is such a great player and person.
What a great show, thanks so much!
Fantastic! What a lovely guy Pete is.
