@Rabea Massaad just wondering if when playing then the vintage lp, did you mean to play a tool riff or was it just the vibe? Love the sounds you are able to find. Hope all is well. Cheers
You're such a beast, Bea. The Toska and Grinding Gears albums are all just ridiculously sick. Cheers from rainy Tokyo from one of your, if not the, oldest fans pushing 60.
I'm not a heavy player, but this episode is just brilliant! So much interesting insight to gain structure and the importance of guitars, string and technique. And reminds me how much you can learn about yourself by switching the perspective and seeing a completely different approach!
Great point about switching perspectives. Recently I tried to view the world through a "woke leftist". In order to agree with all of their critical theories one needs to perform insane mental gymnastics. I just don't understand how people with any amount of critical thinking abilities view the world that way. It's insanity.

I would rather say that they are different approach to heavy guitar. Like swedish death metal and new metal ambient film music... It isn't even a genre. But it's epic. Cool idea tho.
@@MattXScott And because he doesn't have a 'sound'. If you hear a random song played by him on a Pepsi Challenge, no one would be able to identify him. Actually, I am making fun of the fanboy.
When people say "tone is in the fingers", I feel it has everything with your picking hand: The angle, how deep you dig, the force with which you pick, how far from the bridge, how you mute, etc. They all have a massive influence on the harmonics you create while playing. Hearing Rabea on the 3 guitars vs Dan & Mick is a great example of this
I know right! A lot of others already said this but I'll chime in, this video is a really great demonstration of this fact. I had the idea that this phenomenon only would apply with cleaner sounds than this, and that once you throw on all that distortion (or lots of other effects I guess) that difference between players would get smoothed out. But no, even with all that clipping they all sounded so clearly different. Most interesting moment on this show in a long time, to my ears.
This is the best advertisement for "tone is in the fingers" that I've ever seen. Which is depressing to me, really. There are no silver bullets. Bea would melt faces through any equipment you gave him- even combinations Mick and Dan would have thought were absurd. Likewise, Mick and Dan are great players, but they don't play heavy. It isn't a club they carry in their golf bag. That's OK.

I left work 30 minutes early, just finished making a big pot of clam chowder in the Instapot while listening to Lake Street Drive. A friend suggested listening to them and they are great!!! They've been on the s stereo for the last hour while I cooked. Now, a hot shower, cozy clothes, good hot soup and the best tones on the internet.
I'm 15m in and I had to laugh in enjoyment hearing Rabea playing the three guitars in sequence. A takeaway from this segment for me was that touch is a big thing with this sound, also what you choose to play (like Rabea said - going for power chords, hard rock-ish type of things isn't going to get you there). But he's so confortable with it, it's awesome. Sounds poweful and agressive and somehow just enough, never over the top out of control. ps: love the nod to Lateralus with Dan's LP.
Rabea is probably the only heavy player that I enjoy. His tone is just awesome, and the ambient mixed with the heavy is something I don’t feel like I could do, but I’m determined to try. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Thanks mates!
Many players like all the tone colors of the rainbow: cleans, fuzz, light gain, medium gain and heavy high gain. Mick and Dan u can never suck, you have made us better musicians. You have shown us all the tones possible and made some of the most gorgeuos tones along the way. Even heavy tones, different than Rabea's but essential too. Rabea spoke in the beginning my own belief about preferring using the amp's gain base and sculpting it with pedals. I love high gain tones with healthy amount of lows, mids and treble. Rabea's tone is a great one. This episode is awesome and felt like a gift from heaven. God bless u all. Live long and prosper.
I could listen to Rabea play heavy tones all day. And still, for a metal oriented player he's very well rounded with a good range of skills in other styles. He's never boring, which is a great credit to him.
When it comes to modern metal "chugging", it really does come down to the guitarist, and how they attack the strings, palm mute, etc. You can tell that Mick and Dan just don't play a lot of palm muted chugs. It's a very detailed style of playing, lots of nuances, and a lighter touch than ou would imagine. It took me forever to really learn how to palm mute with such high-gain tones.
I don‘t necessarily love all of Rabea‘s music, but the way he plays the guitar is absolutely spectacular. So passionate and so dynamic. I always love to watch him diggin in. ❤️
Thanks to Rabea for being so open to dissecting and testing his sound. So many artists wouldn’t want to delve in for the uninitiated. Like Dan, I think Rabea’s heavy tones are some of the best modern metal sounds around
Listening to Bea demo a Keeley caverns with an overdrive lead sound is what got me back onto playing and helped me find the sound I absolutely wanted... love that guy
All joking aside, I thought this was a brilliant illustration of going beyond the gear... the idea of 'intent' is a great synthesis of what 99% of us as players are attempting to achieve, but perhaps can't articulate. Yes the gear and setup contribute, but without intent driving creativity it's just some shiny boxes and wooden string platforms. This is not to denigrate the inherent beauty of, and fascination with, tone searching which is why most of us found this channel in the first place, but once we've found that elusive tone of the day, what do we do with it? How many of us (I am woefully guilty of this) spend time carefully dialing in tones only to then hear another great example of a different tone and head off down another rabbit hole? For example Rabea's tones are STELLAR, and given my recent re-appreciation of prog metal, I can feel the temptation (and yes I totally will) but what is my intention? What if anything will I do with it? Have I just become an endless explorer of tone, constantly seeking new avenues without actually spending time with a sound I like and creating music with it? Forgive the long winded reply, but quarantine has left me with a lot of time to contemplate.
As a 40 year old man, my guitar heroes have generally been older than me...until Bea. Plus I've been inspired to give the Riverside another try (lost its place to the Warthog, which won't be going anywhere)
me too (im 39) Tosin Abasi, Tomas Raclavsky and Bea, Tosin is only a souple years younger than me but the other 2 are 10 years younger, and all 3 are brilliant players that put me to shame lool
Mick, you nailed it: it's all in the intention, and there's no substitute for having listened to the music to the point where it's part of yourself, and your ears are tuned to that sound. And develop the right hand attack that works with it (which Rabea has in spades). Then it's just a matter of turning the pots until it sounds right. But yeah, it start with the ears and taste of the player, then get conveyed into the hands, and then is a matter of getting the gear to do what you want it to. There's a fun video where Ola Englund uses a 335, Tele and Les Paul into a Boss Katana, and proceeds to get pretty tasty scandinavian metal tones out of these. Just because he has perfected that kind of playing, and knows how to dial in a tone that works for him. Rabea is so good at that, too. It's so obvious when he's playing all different guitars in sequence and ends up sounding like different versions of himself.
I absolutely loved this episode, even though really heavy tones aren't my thing. Showing how you achieve a particular sound through both equipment and technique really made this episode a cut above.

I'm really not into heavy rock or metal or this kind of music in general, but there's something about Rabea's playing that is just so captivating and inspiring - he sure is a damn impressive player. I thought the same during his pedal board build. How someone can play ambient to heavy metal and everything in between is so damn awesome! Cool dude as well. Cheers!
As a huge metal enthusiast and a fan of all that Bea's has put out, I'm ecstatic to see you guys doing more videos with him. Quickly on the subject that Mick is guessing we're all laughing at their metal playing (21:55 to 23:45), to me is absolutely not the case at all. I think it's nothing short of awesome that you guys are extending your musical tastes and want to approach a broader spectrum of guitar players/playing, as I suppose a majority of guitar players nowadays have their feet in metal as well. I have watched TPS for a couple of years and to hear Dan say he wants to get his metal chops up to some form after hearing Bea wail is super cool to hear. The very first thing I learned when I got into playing heavy metal was definitely palm placement to get nice sounding chugs. There's still so much valuable information that I didn't knew before watching this video. I'd love to see them do more videos with Bea and to play with more pedals. Thanks TPS & Bea for this awesome video!
But, they came understand how finger dexterity combined with proper technique applied was the difference maker, just like in the styles they normally play. I think that is what was surprising for them and hence the laughter. Their techniques did not translate over even to the point where they ignorantly dismissed a guitar’s worth incorrectly. It certainly is an education about technique/intent.
Back in the early nineties as teenagers with our metal band we just spent hours upon hours practicing palm muted riffs and syncopation. Endless hours of palm muting. Rabea really showed how important right hand technique is for creative dynamic metal riffing.
This is such a *great* video. I’m just now seeing it for the first time even though I’ve been a fan or Rabea and Andertons for a while. Thanks, UA-cam :( There’s a lot to be learned from this video. Fun to watch too.
Bea talking about distortion just sounding like it’s sitting on top of the clean put into words something that’s been in my gut for years. I’ve always naturally taken the same approach with heavy tones, but couldn’t ever really describe why. Glad I’m not crazy.
I almost never play high gain stuff but this episode was really fascinating and made me appreciate the guitar sounds from higher gain genres a lot more, cheers!
The videos you guys have done with Rabea are some of my favourites. The combination of Bea's amazing musicality, totally nail-on-the-head technical ability, and the fact that you're all clearly real friends makes for such an enjoyable watch.
When you know how pedals behave and what frequencies to look for, you can easily dial your sound quite fast. It's a matter of understanding how the whole system (pick-guitar-strings-pedals-amp) works, not just a pedal ;)
it probably sounded pretty harsh in the room, but Dan’s Les Paul into the plexi with the riverside was a MONSTER sound, and basically was the answer to the potential episode i posted in the comments of last week’s episode (after Mick mentioned that the tele is a much heavier guitar than it gets credit for). You guys are too good!
This video is definitely worth watching multiple times. Rab is a boss! I love that the other lads are humble enough to admit they don't know, and try and learn. The only way forward!
There is some talk about pick attack but i don't think you spoke about the type of pick used. The size, shape, thickness weight and point make a massive difference to how the string is struck and how it makes you play.
Hey guys! Mike Haug here. Hope you & your families are healty & doing well. I've been Jem enthusiast & collector for a very long time now. Soooooo happy to see the Jem Jr. get some love. Although the Jem Jr. is more or less an RG350 with Jem aesthetics and is very different from a traditional Jem, I love its presence on the show!
So, I just got back from a trip from the future. I watched a video with Rabea sitting in with a great band. He does a sweet solo, then 2 other lead guitarists bust their butts trying to beat the solo. (They didn't!) THEN watched for a few minutes while the two of them tried repeatedly while taking 4s to get in front of you. But you ran circles around them all! Worth the watch! Plini Jamming with Rabea Massaad @ Helsinki Aug 2, 2022
Gotta admit, I smiled at the opening riffs, "Heavy guitar tones..." and there next to Rabea... Mick and Dan show up with their Strat and Tele. Edit: Not awful after watching them try the Strat and Tele through Rabea's sound. It's okay. Not my thing, but somebody out there can pull it off.
The coolest thing about Rabea is that he’s even better with a strat on low gain than with his sig doing heavy, dropped metal stuff. He’s such a broad musician. Insane funk riffs, juicy blues tones and then massive tool type prog metal. One of the most impressive guitarists alive, I think.
Yes that would be ineresting to Bring Bea into Dan and Micks world of guitar playing,I think...Well I know Bea would do just fine .Never ceases to amaze he's a phenomenal player.Don't let him be modest...When the world gets back to normal PLEASE TPS

Yeaaaaaahhhhh!!!
Jim Goulden ... and MegaDan
I was reminded of that too!
Dan-zig?
Back in the early nineties as teenagers with our metal band we just spent hours upon hours practicing palm muted riffs and syncopation. Endless hours of palm muting. Rabea really showed how important right hand technique is for creative dynamic metal riffing.
More videos like this!!!! Rabea has awesome tone!
Heavy is not normally my thing but I love listening to Bea. Great show guys.
This is such a *great* video. I’m just now seeing it for the first time even though I’ve been a fan or Rabea and Andertons for a while. Thanks, UA-cam :(
There’s a lot to be learned from this video. Fun to watch too.
Yes!! Epic. Rabea seems like the nicest rock star ever
Yesssss!! We like Rabea!!
Amazing how quickly Bea dials in "his" sound with a new pedal. Most of us would fiddle about for an hour....
A tell of someone who has found their tone and knows what they're doing when you can get your thing out of anything.
When you know how pedals behave and what frequencies to look for, you can easily dial your sound quite fast. It's a matter of understanding how the whole system (pick-guitar-strings-pedals-amp) works, not just a pedal ;)
Not exactly, Bea at least demoed all of those pedals.
it probably sounded pretty harsh in the room, but Dan’s Les Paul into the plexi with the riverside was a MONSTER sound, and basically was the answer to the potential episode i posted in the comments of last week’s episode (after Mick mentioned that the tele is a much heavier guitar than it gets credit for). You guys are too good!
Dan trying to play metal and chugging is an absolute joy to watch
He’s much better at it than me!
This video is definitely worth watching multiple times. Rab is a boss! I love that the other lads are humble enough to admit they don't know, and try and learn. The only way forward!
It would be so great to put Rabea and John Brown (Monuments) in the same room discussing high gain sounds. Love to see what would happen 😄
I called that tool tone when the Les Paul was plugged in!! Rabea is an incredible player and was a great guest!
'At least you know the D&M Drive can get a bit filthy'
Yes, we definitely established that when 'Dan was Juicing into Mick'
Phono-nominal! What a great episode, so cool to hear such playing and again.. added variety. Bea plays with utter conviction, what an inspiration.
Rabea had the exact same reaction I do whenever my hands start playing Burn Burn.
16:17 yeahhh I know that problem Bea... the tune's still great though
Its so cool to see your raw reactions to the heaviness of these tones.
bloody lovely show lads! haven't laughed this much in a while 😂 particularly enjoyed watching you guys attempt to chug :P
The D and M Drive with the Marshall sounded absolutely wicked. Almost sludgy. So nice.
Loving it and only 30 secs in!!!
Strat man myself, but that Vintage Les Paul through Rabea's setup sounded beeeeauuutiful.
The riff he launched into at 53:00 was insanely good!!
Did you find out what it was?!
Toska (band), Fire by the Silos (album), When Ghengis Wakes (song)
Love this! When you rarely get to play heavy tones you need these shows to get ready for when it's time to crank. Cheers Guys!!
Yes that would be ineresting to Bring Bea into Dan and Micks world of guitar playing,I think...Well I know Bea would do just fine .Never ceases to amaze he's a phenomenal player.Don't let him be modest...When the world gets back to normal PLEASE TPS
Oh blimey, he’s amazing doing the rock and blues stuff. There is a reason why the boy is so well loved!
I've never felt like I knew more about something than Dan and Mick. Until today.
Release the "All pedals sound best with everything at 2 o'clock"
That would be an awesome shirt.
@rabeamassaad might me one of the most versatile guitar players out there. Great episode!
Bea: Shreds Face... Also Bea: “I apologize for my playing”.
Every time I hear Rabea play I am dumbfounded and left in awe at his phrasing and conviction with which he plays. He’s the man.
“It’s been years” ... since we recorded this 😂 you’re sitting on gold!
Rabea is truly incredible. What a talent. It’s been a real pleasure watching his videos over the years. And Dan and Mick, obvs.
