From what I read, Rutsey liked to drink and party when the band first toured. It was a distraction for the band, as he could not manage his diabetes which caused the health issues.
OMG I grew up on Rush. I have every single one of their vinyl albums to this day, including a signed one from the band AND I still have three concert T-Shirts that are collector items now. Huge, huge fan here.
Now that you've heard the original with John Rutsey, you should hear what I believe is the best version of this song. You will fall out of your seat 😂 Working Man Live in Cleveland 2011.
It wasn't Geddy's voice that led me to love RUSH. It wasn't the drums. It wasn't Alex's guitar. It was Geddy on bass. He stood out so much among all bass players. My first real bass hero. When this song was first played on the Cleveland radio station people were calling in asking when that new Led Zeppelin record would be out. People thought it was Zeppelin! And it's not hard to hear why!

I agree 100%. I love good bass playing and Geddy's playing was the first time I'd heard someone "shred" on the bass. Great bass player. Now I love all aspects of Rush, but, as you said, it's what initially drew me to them.
To truly appreciate RUSH watch them live. Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left Tour will blow your mind. There’s a very good remastered version on the Stickhits UA-cam channel. Good to see you back enjoying RUSH!
This was the song that broke RUSH into the American market. This is RUSH before Neil Peart joined them. Neil was with the band from “Fly By Night” on. This was why one of the nicknames for Neil was ALWAYS, even 40 years later, he was the “New Guy”. At this point in their career, they were VERY much into Led Zeppelin and the Who and so on. Shortly into this tour, the original drummer, John Rutsey, had to drop out of the band due to health reasons, but also as Geddy alluded to in his recent book, there were significant stylistic differences growing between Geddy and Alex, and John.
I loved them closing out their Moving Pictures tour with this song. They went backwards in time and ended with this, their first hit song. It was epic.

The guitar riffs in this song are just legendary and we who are true working men and women can relate to this hard driving song exactly what got me through some tough days at work...
One of the first Rush albums I bought was a triple album anthology of their first three albums. With all due respect to the great Neil Peart, who did not play on the first album, I have always loved Rush's first album, featuring this song. There is a power ballad on this album called "Here Again" which is also awesome (I used to find it impossible to resist playing the air guitar to the guitar solo on that song). The opening track, "Findiing My Way" is total fire
