The live version of this from RIO would blow your mind!
I love that version! I have seen a lot of bands live, but Rush was on a whole different level. No opening act. A 3-hour show with an intermission in the middle. And damn, they were note-for-note perfect. I feel blessed to have been able to see them what few times I did. I really miss this band.
How can an entire audience SING ALONG TO AN INSTRUMENTAL??
The live version is sick!
Another vote for Live in RIO! It's worth doing the song again!
Just watched coz of this comment, very good! The tone of the live bass man!
Now you understand why it's difficult for us old guys to embrace the music of today.
Cheers to that 👍👊😎🇨🇦
I was introduced to RUSH in 1981 with their Moving Pictures Album. Life Changing
SADLY TRUE! However...these poor kids, who grew up in a DESERT...are discovering the magic of "PLAYING" an instrument? ;)
Amen
❤❤❤❤❤❤
YYZ Live in Rio is absolutely a must see! That performance will blow your mind!
In Canada we pronounce it YYZED like you do in Britain.
That was Geddy and Alex at the end jokingly calling it Yez.
Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a licensed pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy ad Neil heard the indicator code for YYZ (Toronto International Airport)
and it stuck with them.
The first part of the song is YYZ in morse code.
La Villa Strangiato is an incredible instrumental by them.
It is based on a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had especially when they were on tour. Please react to the Official music video.
2112 is another masterpiece.
I would suggest watching the comic book version to get the whole storyline.
Working Man LIVE IN CLEVELAND will blow your socks off!
I just turned 70 this year and yes I ageee our generation had the best music and were spoiled for choice.
I love seeing you getting excited over my favourite band. ❤
Cheers
I've never heard the song name be pronounced that way :P
YYZED....YEZ, was just a joke. 😊
Geddy and Alex? I thought that was Dirk and Lerxst at the end. 😉
@@0okamino You are absolutely right! 😉
Everything Debbieplato5107 said above is right on the money. I wish I paid more attention to Rush growing up in the 70's and 80's, but at least I, like you am getting to finally rediscover them now. It sucks Neil is no longer with us so I'll never get to see them in concert so I'll just have to settle for playing their albums on my old Pioneer SX780 through some big old speakers that I can feel in my gut.
Just an incredibly talented group whose music will live on well after we're gone as some of the best ever.
Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt drum solo!🤯
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's airport which was Home for Rush, and they would say zed. The repetitive rhythm at the start of the song is morse code for YYZ It is Y-Y-Z not yyz that was a joke at the end about people saying what is yyz. That was Alex and Geddy talking in the end.
Thanks for that 👍🏻
I have have my Airman Certificate (airplane mechanic/electronics - 20+ years) and have been in commercial and private FBOs for work all across the U.S.A. After hearing Rush YYZ as a kid I've learned morse code and seek out the designators of airports.
but did they pronounce it zed or zee?
@@reedhoule3045 ZED as most of the world, kan't confuse it with E.
LOL, Yizz :D
WHOO RUSH! 2112 NEXT
Hell yeah! I know he'll appreciate 2112!
Studio version first!
Too much too fast! To early. Needs to take each album and understand the lyrics and musicianship first❤
@@majones501 Always!
@@KabukiKid I hope he sees the comic version... but like some say, too deep , too fast... I'll put that one like the 10 song fpr Rush novices!.. 2112 should be a movie or Theater material"... And What would he say of Xanadu from Exit Stage Left remastered?
Three of the best musicians on the planet!
YYZ Live in Rio is a Banger, gotta check that one out at some point 👍
RUSH are a different level. Pure and simple. Great reaction MOLLYBOY 🤘
Working man - live in Cleveland (it's an ass kicker!.. 50+ years old... hold my beer)
Xanadu - from exit stage left 1981 (Epic masterpiece... how do they do live? there it is)
La villa Strangiato - Live time machine Tour (an instrumental masterpiece)
Neil Peart drum solo live in Frankfurt (a drum solo like you never tought could be so creative)
The garden - Clockwork angels tour (last song from last album... the most beautiful performance)
2112 - Comic book version (the masterpiece of all masterpiece)
Headlong Flight (a banger... in their 50's they return to a harder sound )
Roll the bones - official video (did you know Rush tried to rap in a song?)
40 years 19 albums... Fly by night, Subdivision, Far Cry, By-Tor and the snow dog, Limelight, Freewill, Witch hunt, Closer to the heart, Red barchetta, the necromancer... the list is never ending... you will never come back the same from this rabbit hole
Every generation says their music is so much better than the new generations'. BUT this is the first time it's actually true !
It’s happening because society has been socially engineered to accept cheap produced music as rap and hip hop .
@HEELMACHINE L take. Prog Music is great. it's awesome. But lot of of rap is great and very catchy even if it's cheap to produce. All genres has its greats and terrible music. Even prog has some crap. I listen everything. Metal, Punk, Rock, Rap, Trance, Pop, and Worship. It's not hard to find something objectively good even if you don't like it.
@@HEELMACHINEAs a side note, I would defend any rappers music to say what they want, but with that said, the hard truth is that N WORD, N word this, N word that , N N N N N bull shit made of bull shit that is the ultimate bull shit that ever shit on planet earth! 😎👍 I hear you! ? And they actually say it to heal the pain of the past! 😞😞 Ugh what a world we live in!😞
@@doublewhat07 Rap has its place in music but not as popular as it is….. I don’t think the popularity of it is organic…… rather socially engineered. Music industry doesn’t make money selling albums anymore due to free internet. Fact is music acts are not as great as in the past because more money is made from samples and computer generated music. I learned that from a producer “Rick Beato” that has his own channel. Not as many people involved in the recording process. I’m not that much of a prog fan as much of it is too mechanical sounding but Rush does it right.
@@HEELMACHINE This has nothing to do with Rap or hip-hop though. There's some amazing stuff out there in every genre. I also think that people sweep a LOT Of shit music from the 70's and 80's under the rug because it's not as popular these days. There's always more bad music than good.
I am 66 years old and really didn’t listen to Rush until about 3or 4 years ago. At work we were allowed to listen to music on headphones(manufacturing facility). So I started listening to ALL kinds of music, especially stuff I NEVER listened to before and fell in love with this band.
Its never too late to learn about greatness!
Have you ever explored Zappa ?
YYZ - Live in RIO is a MUST!!!!! Most hype crowd ever!
The difference between this YYZ studio version and Live in Rio is equivalent to the difference between the studio and Pulse Concert versions of Comfortably Numb. Both Live versions are a revelation compared to the studio cuts.
meh
Yes the spectacle of YyZ in Rio is incredible...but for first reaction the smart choice is the studio cut...hearing all the clarity as he so truly recognized...the immaculate production
Absolutely worth checking out if you liked studio YYZ. Rush live is something special.
The Rio version is all about watching the people in Rio kick butt with a great song. I've only been to 3 of their concerts. I saw this tour in Las Vegas a couple of months before they went down to Brazil for the first time ever and recorded the whole concert on DVD. Rush delivers a great sounding show every time. But for this recording, it really is about partying with that audience.
You were right it's pronounced "Why Why Zed" it's Toronto Pearson International Airports Code.. It used to be transmitted via morse code to pilots hence the intro... The 2 security guys chatting at the end are actually Geddy and Alex.. Their nicknames for each other are "Dirk" (Geddy) and "Lerxst" (Alex), Neil was "Pratt" If you think this was a good instrumental check out La Villa Strangiato especially the remastered and remixed version by Stickhits here on UA-cam 👍👍👍👍👍👍 Yes we were lucky to experience these back in the day... I saw the guys on their first UK tour in '77 and their last tour in 2013..... The greatest band ever.... Life changing to say the least 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
We ABSOLUTELY had the best music. 60's, 70's and 80's!
And 90s and 2000s all the way up to 2012 if you were listening to rush you had the best music of the rock era.
@mattbaker5757 There was still some decent stuff in the 90's, a bit in the early 2000's. Around 2005 the Rock started fading and rap completely took over. I'm glad I was a teenager in the 70's. Got to see Queen, Led Zeppelin. The Who, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Judas Priest and a bunch of other bands at the top of their game.
I'd say until about '95 or so. Then the wheels fell off. Of course there are still talented individuals out there making music, but the age of BANDS has largely died.
60'S, 70'S AND 90'S ARE THE BEST!! THE 80'S HAD TOO MUCH HAIRSPRAY GLAM BANDS. I DON'T HATE THE 80'S, THERE WAS SOME AWESOME BANDS THEN TOO! 😎 🩷🤘✌️
@@laurawatters914 Yeah I wasn't a big hair band fan either, but the 80's produced some pretty cool music before the hair bands.
I don't even know where to direct you. These are honestly, 3 of the greatest musicians you will ever hear.
I remember as an early teen buying Rush's "Moving Pictures" and Led Zeppelin's "IV" albums at the local KMart with my buddy, Scott. Man, what a great afternoon jamming some amazing music!
**Perfect** YAY
If this blows your head off god daym .Wait till ya hear 2112 by them 🤯
The thing I really love about Rush is they weren't afraid to evolve and embrace different styles of music.
Goosebumps - live ‘closer to the heart’ from ‘show of hands tour’ or Xanadu - live exit stage left - these will change you production genius
Discovered RUSH at 12 yrs old, they were a huge part of the soundtrack of my teenage years and still today. And thank you for the compliment.
Jacobs Ladder is a masterpiece prog cut, most underrated Rush song.
Jacob’s Ladder off of Exit Stage Left hits so hard
Neil was a “human drum machine”
You’re officially in the rush rabbit hole!
Early works you have got to do
2112…. 23 min of pure genius
Bytor an the snow dog
Necromancer ( probably Alex’s best guitar work)
Limelight, freewill, natural science, anolog kid, red barchetta
Later works ghost of a chance, far cry, headlong flight, the garden( their good bye song to the fans)
Instrumentals
La villa strangiato, malignant narcissism, leave that thing alone, where’s my thing
Live!!!!
Xanadu 1981 Montreal, working man Cleveland 2011, jacobs ladder 2017 Toronto
I could go on an on an on
Enjoy your journey
drummers use a metronome. A metronome uses Neil Peart.
Do you Mollyboy! Its your channel and your journey. It doesn't bother me at all. Infact, i absolutely 💯 think you outta do whatever you want. No stress...enjoy the ride! Todays the day! 40k excellent job!😁🤘〽️❤️🔥
Agreed. Do your own thing. It’s your channel and you are obviously doing it right as it’s grown so bloody quick and people love it and love you. Keep on rocking. !!!
Great comment... His journey is only just beginning.
It is Y, Y, Z ('Yizzed' is just a joke). Watching this live in Rio is an experience (do it on your own, if you must, but DO IT) ... EVERYTHING Rush does is spectacular!! La Villa Strangiato is another instrumental that is outstanding. 2112( Twenty-One Twelve) is a long one, but it tells an entire story and is worth the time. Rush sounds different in every era, but is always identifiable as Rush ;-)
I first saw Rush at The Glasgow Apollo in 1978; they blew my mind then. And they still do every single time I hear them.
I recently walked into a shop east Fife, Scotland, to the strains of a live version of Xanadu.
I immediately exchanged Rush pleasantries with the shop owner before going with my friend to start buying local produce.
Before I could get back to the counter?
‘Damn,’ I thought initially.
The door opened and a bustle of excited primary school children came in with their teacher.
Andy, for he was the proprietor, announced ‘hey kids!’ ‘What’s the most important day in December then?’ Of course I expected them to holler ‘Christmas!!!’
No, they all responded in unison ‘2112, Andy!!!’
Hell, my jaw dropped and I have rarely been closer to tears of joy in my entire life.
A whole generation of Scottish kids are now growing up listening to Rush. Because of one band, and one man.
Hats off, Andy, wherever you are now.
Working man, spirit of radio, closer to the heart, all great songs
This track is literally the track I heard that turned me on to Rush years ago.
If you find a live version you won't be disappointed. They do all this live and it's phenomenal.
One of the best instrumentals in the history of rock.
Rush had so many major hits from each album over the years. It's so hard to choose a song to do next, so many great ones. Subdivisions, The Trees, Tom Sawyer, Limelight......
It’s pronounced “Y-Y-Zed.” The “Yizz” thing at the end was Rush taking the piss. They are always joking around. Also ~ yes, I did grow up in the best music era. Thank you for recognizing that. The bad news? I got a $200 speeding ticket while listening to this song back in the 80’s. I saw them perform live so many times I lost count.
Also, if you really like Neil’s drumming and you really want to see and hear it in it’s glory, look up “NEIL PEART DRUM SOLO - RUSH LIVE IN FRANKFURT.”
Here’s a list of some my favorite (mostly) deeper-cut songs that I know you would love:
1973
What You're Doing
1974
Anthem
Beneath, Between And Behind
1975
Bastille Day
I Think I'm Going Bald
1976
2112 (warning - it’s 20 minutes long… and worth every second)
1978
La Villa Strangiato
1980
Natural Science
1981
Red Barchetta
Vital Signs
1982
The Analog Kid
1989
The Pass
2112 (like the year twenty one twelve) is their epic masterpiece. Watch By-Tor and The Snow Dog live from the Moving Pictures Tour. Basically, 168 of the greatest songs for your RUSH playlist!
R.I.P. Neil Peart ❤
Can confirm. The 70’s were the best.
Moving Pictures was produced by Terry Brown and mixed by Paul Northfield. They were two enormous talents that really helped craft Rush's sound in that era.
This song was massively influential on prog metal bands like Dream Theater
what a treat to see you enjoy this so much!
Drummer here and yeah, Geddy's Bass lines are KILLER!!!!
Just the tone of the bass makes me tear-up. The producer "squeezed it" perfectly.
LETS GOOO!!! THE GOATS, RUSH!!!
La Villa Strangiato is an instrumental beast!! Also has the great production this has.
2112 is a must at this point. Epic Masterpiece.
Yes! The live version of YYZ in Rio!!! Not just the music but the visuals are outstanding!!!
YYZ has always been one of my favorite Rush tracks, and it is very overlooked, imvho.
I know exactly what you mean by listening to music and picking out little details that, for a reason you can't quite explain, just make you happy. Nothing else quite like it.
Unsure yet if this is studio or live in Rio version. If studio, I hope you eventually do the live in Rio version. Rush has a lot of good songs, this one was recommended for the crowd energy in Rio :-)
I’m going to be doing both studio and live versions of songs
Another.Instrumental - La.Villa Strangiato. Album version, for the Spanish guitar intro...
And it is Y-Y-Zed. Yizz.== taking the pizz ;)
YYZ is the shorthand for Toronto International Airport.....their home airport. This song was created based on sounds they heard the pilots make when landing or taking off.
Torontonian here ... Radio here in the 1980s was essentially infused with Rush as a mandatory ingredient. You couldn't go a single day without hearing at least one of their songs. It was pretty great, especiallly anticipating their new releases and how they'd change up their style. And they changed it up with every single album.
Dude. I need to move to Canada. I also got to experience when I visited Toronto hockey being on…everywhere. I’m from Pittsburgh, and The Pens are huge but we pretty often still have to ask for the hockey game to be turned on in pubs.
MAS TER PIE CE!
Wanna another instrumental banger? Try 2112.
Keep rockin. Peace
Soliloquy solo is a masterpiece
Once again I'm really glad you did the studio version first, even though so many people seem to demand a live one. Hear the song the way it was painstakingly produced and then check out other versions. If you do get to 2112 (pronounced "twenty one twelve") strap in, it's a long one! Don't forget to eventually check out Neal's drum solo from Frankfort, it's life altering 🤯
Yes we sure did have the best ever music! Never to be matched!
The hours I spent putting a mix tape together from the radio 🤘🏽😎
I was in drumline in high school in 89, and we all strived to play this, Neil peart is the man!!
Yes, yes we did lol. Try Red Barchetta...It kicks ass!
you need to see rush do yyz live in rio amazing dude
It is Y Y Zed, not yizz. That's a joke because many people don't know what YYZ is. It's the airport code for the airport in Toronto, Ontario (their home town) and the intro is the guidance beacon pattern. When flying back from wherever, they knew they were close to home when they heard it.
Limelight, Fly By Night, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions, Working Man, Big Money, Time Stand Still are all popular songs by them that are a good start to exploring Rush. I'd also suggest the video of YYZ live in Rio, something from their Time Machine tour and Spirit of the Radio from the 2003 SARS benefit concert in Toronto
There is so much to love about Rush: their willingness to evolve over time, the deep lyrics mostly written by Neil Peart, their sense of humor expressed in their stage sets, Geddy Lee's unique voice. But most of all, the fact that they were three virtuosos on their respective instruments who together formed a synergy that always inspires the reaction "I can't believe there are only three guys in this band". For that reason, I really think they are at their best during instrumental pieces and sections of songs (though I do love Neil's lyrics, and I can't imagine life without them). We are so lucky that these three monster musicians were so humble that they could stay together for 40 years and give us so much of their talented music. My only reaction these days is "thank you Rush."
Buckle up young lad.... The rabbit hole is deep with this group
Enjoy! And I know you will. 😊
As a Boomer, I can say we had great music because we were forced, through Radio and Variety Shows to listen to ALL genres.
Younger generations don't have easy access to music that is different, or unfamiliar.
DO MORE RUSH!! I'm from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 and I've seen them in concert several times before Neil passed away ( R.I.P.) and nothing is better than listening to them for the first time in reactions like yours!
Watch Neil Peart's drum solo next please ...it will show you just how incredible he is. Thanks for the RUSH reactions. Keep smiling👍🙂
I’m jealous your hearing this for the first time 😎
RUSH IS CLASSIC♥️👍🎶
LIMELIGHT and FLY BY NIGHT are fantastic 👍🎧
Three people... and when live in concert, Geddy played they keyboards with his feet if he needed to play bass at the same time. Greatest band of all time.
We were very blessed to have heard the caliber of music RUSH produced. Unforgettable.
Your Rush journey will be fun to watch
They're will never be another Rush. Not even close.
And cheers to you young man for realizing the music we had in the 70s and 80s was the pinnacle and different from today. It was incredible to grow up with these bands in real time like you said.
YYZ live RIO is insane! Same as the live version on Exit Stage Left with an absolute banger of a drum solo! Another great rush instrumental "La Villa Strangiato" again the live version from Exit Stage Left.
One of the all time best bass guitar lines in rock and roll history, no joke. Rock bassists try to play this as a test. Most can’t.
I bet this blows your mind.
I've both flown in and out of YYZ (Pearson) many times and attended a gig or two at Massey Hall (4:30). Some other cool landmarks in that animation. Originally, an Ontario lad.
As much as I like Lee and Peart's performances in this song, I'm all about Lifeson's work.
Always a treat to see someone hear a song this good that I've heard 1,000 times for the first time. Nice reaction, man.
I was 16 when I first saw them in 1979. And 38 times after that. But I guarantee you hearing this for the first time in my late teens, had us all screaming and high fiving each other. We skipped classes the day Moving Pictures was released. We all went to my friend’s house, got high and absolutely went crazy. Hearing those songs after being fans for years was next keel for even us. We were used to their skill but Moving Pictures was in another category. Then seeing that tour live 3 times, and seeing them play these songs to perfection was an experience beyond comprehension. There will never be another trio where each member is better than the next, and playing their instruments with no artificial technology being used. This band is in matched in arrangements, concepts, lyrics, skill, and sound.
Hope it's RIO!
Zz top - la grange
🤘😎🤘
YYZ is the Airport code for the Torronto airport. That's where the name comes from.
"The Trees" is my all time fav from Rush! The lyric`s are a metaphor about the relationship between the USA and Canada...so much so the symbolism between the Trees, Canada has the Maple Leaf and the National Tree of the USA is the Oak, shadowing their neighbor to the North! Each Member of Rush are Masters of their craft! Especially Neil, possibly the Greatest drummer of all time...Yes Sir, Mollyboy, the 60`s, 70`s and the 80`s IS the Greatest time for Music! I Love 70`s and 80`s Metal, but The Classics are where its at my Man!
We absolutely did have the best music! It's kinda cool watching you hear some of this shit for the first time, and having the same reaction as we did, 40 years ago.
Another Brummie Rush fan 👍
Highly recommend Xanadu live Exit Stage Left
Absolutely a must
Thank you for saying that. We did have the best music!
Xanada Exit Stage Left - is a must - sit back and be delighted - best ever
You're gonna love the bass when you get around to 2112. Do the cartoon comic book version as it will help you understand the 25 min long story the first time.
Great tip
Next working man live from Cleveland
HELL YEAH we had the best music
And this is one of the most fan friendly groups. They put out an LP just about every year and toured evey Album. They enjoyed performing live.
LETS GO!!!!
Red Barchetta. You will love the imagery of both the lyrics and the music.
The producer is a Brit named Terry Brown.
I went to several Rush concerts in the 70s and 80s. They got better every time I saw them. If you watch a video of their live performance, notice how they play the sound effects WITH THEIR FEET!! So fricking talented.
DREAM THEATER PLEAAASE ❤
I’ve been pithing them for a minute here now lol…I’ve scared a couple reactors off by starting with Dance of eternity instead of starting them with pull me under or as I am 😂
Pitching not pitching lol
Geddy Lee's bass line in YYZ is considered one of the best ever.
YYZ is the Toronto airport call letters. And the beginning is YYZ in Morse code.
I personally would have hated growing up with todays music.... I got to see Rush live 53 times.... I'm 62 now.... Our music was so very much better!
As I drove over the Canadian border at Niagara in I think 2002, having been to see Yes play in Philadelphia the night before? The Toronto Tower hoved into view in the distance.
What came on the local radio station? Yup. YYZ! The sun was shining. I was with incredible friends. And we rocked!
Rush’s Canadian National anthem is this very song right here. Absolute banger!
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. The sound YYZ makes to air traffic controlllers is the beat of the song. od coming home. Neil is a genius.
Rush has been together for 40 years , Be. Ready to expect the unexpected
I and many others here have been listening to this music for 50+ years. We also had to buy albums which we wore the grooves out of. Then cassettes, 8 tracks and more. You are so very lucky that you have discovered this genre. You can listen to ALL the songs the rest of your life on UA-cam and elsewhere. Now, we did have the advantage of seeing many of these bands live.
I love when the younglings discover and get Rush.
Mate, you are going to fall in love with this band, they were undoubtedly the greatest prog rock 3 piece ever.
YYZ are the letters for the Toronto Pierson International Airport.. I live in Calgary, YYC! Thanks for another great reaction video! RUSH was so popular in my era and they still are today. Thanks MollyBoy!
The Rio audience sings the whole song, which you now know has no words 😊
