It was May 1981 in Rochester, NY at the Rochester Community War Memorial Arena… I was a senior in HS and my birthday is the 14th of May… My brothers and my best friend Mike and I drove to
See them. Anyways, it was the moving pictures tour, the concert was amazing. The next morning my friend and I went to this place called Chet’s Luncheonette… As we were finishing breakfast I looked up and sitting at the counter was Neil Peart and someone else (roadie or tech?) I knew Neil was a private guy but I idolized him. I knew he didn’t give autographs but I needed to acknowledge him (this was long before phone cams/ or digital cams). I told Mike I’m gonna say something, I went to the register and paid and told the woman “I’d like to pay for those guys at the end of the counters meal as well.” As I got closer I got scared, I stopped and said, “Mr. Peart, thanks for all the music, I’ve been a fan since 76…”
He looked up and smiled and said, “Hey man, thanks for the support and being a fan…”
    I think I said, “Yuh”
And walked out… It was one of my fondest memories, it was surreal…
Thanks for the warm memory. R.I.P. Neil Peart and long live the mighty Rush! 👊🏻

The ultimate Rush performance is "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left tour. You will literally not believe how perfect it is. Geddy plays bass, six string guitar, keyboards & synths, bass pedals, and sings. Alex plays twelve and six string guitars and pedals; and Neil plays an entire orchestral percussion section, including tubular bells & glockenspiel. It is the perfect live performance and incredibly brilliant! Trust me. I call it three geniuses with seven necks. Watch to figure out why.

How three guys pushing 60 can end a three hour show by rocking out harder than any group half their age. If you check out the lights over the stage during the reggae section they're red, yellow and green for the Jamaican flag, thats how much into detail these guys are. 😊 p.s. that little end riff is off Cygnus XI.

Great reaction to an amazing performance! Rush is always great but I really believe the best way to experience them is to see a live performance. In addition they actually have a few music videos that were made in studio. Those are normally great too because again you get the extra added pleasure of seeing them actually play the music. Please do a reaction to Rush - Xanadu - Exit...Stage Left - Live 1981. It is possibly one of the greatest live rock performances of all time. Take care and enjoy the ride Rush is a very deep rabbit hole with tons of different styles of songs.

Saw Rush 4 times during my high school years in the 70's. First time was when they had released their 3rd album "Caress Of Steel" and were opening for Kiss (Rush's so called "down the tubes tour" when their record label was about to drop them). Then 2112 came out and they were the headliner. My favorite band growing up, no one rocked harder than Rush in those days!

Just please keep in mind that Rush is one of the rare bands whose oeuvre actually constitutes its own genre.
They were a band that never stood still and ( ... you might remember this from Behind the Lighted Stage) wrote the music they thought they would like, themselves, rather than what record-buyers might like.
All of which is to say that, if you want to get to know Rush's music, it's going to take some time - because 19 studio albums and a dozen live ones have left us with A LOT of music!

I never get tired of watching this; my favorite part is the dueling guitars! As I mentioned in your last Rush reaction, I am a new Rush fan, but I am in awe of their live performances especially. How three guys create all of that sound is a wonder to behold! One of my favorite live performance videos is from their "keyboard era" in the 1980s: 'Mission", Live from Birmingham 1988. The lyrics are inspiring, Geddy multitasks at the bass, keyboard, foot pedals and singing, Neil has a xylophone solo. Finally, Alex's guitar solo is especially soulful. It's one of my favorite Rush videos and the live performance has an immediate impact even today.

Great reaction!!! You obviously appreciate artistical musicianship. Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever, no matter the members). Pure musicianship and fluid artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them.
Welcome aboard the Rush Train!!! Now time to venture down the RUSH rabbit hole.
I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially all of the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry.
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER. This was performed just BEFORE Working Man at the concert.
    - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.
    - YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
    - Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
    - Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
    - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
    - Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
    - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
    - Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
    - Fly by Night - original was 1975
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

The comic-book style 2112 with the lyrics and some of Neil's and Ayn's quotes was quite well done - and it is a the studio version I believe - I think that video really adds to the experience for a lot of people as they can actually follow the story of the character. A few liberties were taken I think, but otherwise a great video especially for reaction vids I would say.

The very ending was their 'concert sign-off' (it's from Cygnus X1 - that's one for later, a concept album) - this was the finale song of the concert - I saw the concert a few days after this one on the tour (and again a year later on the 2 year tour- had to see this concert twice!), and about 95% of that performance was identically face melting, basically like most of Neil's drum solos - he does have some sections that are improvised at each performance, but mostly they are just that good. Not sure if you've checked out La Villa Strangiato yet - it's an instrumental based off a recurring nightmare Alex used to have - great instrumental, really shows off their abilities - I like the studio version the best but there are quite a few live ones that amaze, some that are just silly. Also a must see if you haven't is YYZ live in Rio - the audience there was amazing - another of Rush's instrumentals - basically a drum/bass groove with some other magic. YYZ is the airport code for their home town airport - Toronto Pearson International airport, and when flying back home into airport they would hear the Morse code for YYZ over the transponder, which is how the song begins - people usually wonder as it has a very strange intro if you go in not knowing.

I totally appreciate the initial ‘barrier’ to getting into Rush. I experienced the very same sentiments, albeit back in the 80s, it wasn’t until my friends encouraged me to see them live (Glasgow then Edinburgh), my mind was blown and immediately got ‘it’, although, with later regret, the last album I bought was Grace Under Pressure. I was 22 or 23 years old when this started playing in Cleveland. As most of you know, it was only played to give the DJ time for a bathroom break. I cannot say I heard it the first time, but, well, it took the hell OFF. We didn't really know the name of the band, but, we knew to ask for the one with that singer that sounded like a castrated cat, or, the one with that bad ass guitar riff. Of course, that was John Rutsey on drums, not Mr Peart. We didn't know any of that. We knew it was a kick ass tune, and we knew we identified with what was being said. Cleveland back then was in the death throes of a rust belt town. "Nothing going down here!". We are proud to consider these guys as Clevelands, altho, we know and understand they are all Canadians, from the Ontario.

Live performance of their first hit song redone partially in Reggae style. The original arrangement received massive airplay on a Rock station in Cleveland. That sort of put them on the map, a little ol' 3 piece band from Toronto. This special concert was their way of thanking the city, I think. Their first album did not include Neal Peart who was the drummer and composer for all their subsequent albums.

Cleveland Ohio was a blue collar working town, and the song "Working Man" went hand in hand.
When Rush's first album was released they were not very well known at all. In 1974, Donna Halper a DJ at WMMS FM/100.7 in Cleveland, played Rush's "Working Man" on the radio for the first time in the United States. She looked at the L.P. and saw the title of the song so played it in the wee hours of the early am traffic. The station received thousands of calls asking about it, and so it became something they played regularly.

Growing up in the seventies, I was introduced to RUSH by a new kid in my neighborhood! He brought the live album, All the Worlds the Stage, to my house! Told me that he had been to that concert! He showed me how to air guitar and air drum to this album! That kid changed my life!

I love how much music touches your beautiful heart and soul Red💕💕 So is there another artist and or band besides Ren that you would revisit that reminds you of how you felt about Rush? One of mine had been Rush as well here in San Antonio they were always the group to sell out their concerts instantly 🎸🎸🎸#reaction #rush #rushreaction #geddylee #alexlifeson #nealpeart #tomsawyer #redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulcountrygirl

That was absolutely fantastic!! Yes, let's do more Rush! Like The Warning, it's beyond me how they got so much sound from just three people live. Having had a brief time with Rush, I think it was a greatest hits album in the 90's, I'll have to dig it out and see, then there has to be a ton of songs I don't know. Some bands are just so good live. Rush, The Warning, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, DMB, Midnight Oil, to name but a few.

Seen Rush twice live. They never disappoint. Going to take those memories to my grave. Best band ever and are we not graced to live at this time and share the planet with these boys. Being a musician myself, I have never been so influenced by these masters. You really have to appreciate the musicianship, technicality and true performers that they were. WOW.

Did you notice that Geddy has clothes washing machines swirling behind him? He thought it would be a good joke, especially since with his bass he did not have the big amplifiers, and wanted something to visually balance the look on stage.

This is the song and the city where Rush broke out in 1974. Donna Halper was a DJ at WMMS in Cleveland and was looking for a longer song to take a break during. She found this on Rush’s first album in the studio. The song was over 7 minutes long. After it was over the phones rang of the hook because everybody wanted to know the name of the band. The rest is history.🎸🤘

I love coming back to watch this version of Working Man. For a really way-back look at them and this song, search for "Rush Laura Secord Secondary School, 1974, St Catharines, Ontario", and jump to the 27-minute mark [or watch the whole 39 minute concert]. I think it might be the only footage of their first drummer - John Rutsey. This was held in a high school across town from me, which I thought was cool. In my own little "claim to fame", I actually went to the same high school as Neil did [Lakeport], although I was a decade behind him... lol

Hopefully, you've watched the documentary of them "Beyond The Lighted Stage". If you haven't, you'll learn a lot about them. Also, it helps to listen to them with the lyrics handy.....Neil was a genius/poet/drummer/percussionist, the likes of which the world will never see again, and seeing his poetry as you listen will help. (and yes, this song was one of the few Neil didn't write) Enjoy.

Performance for the ages ( from the aged😂). I will always enjoy working man for its straight ahead, rock style but it’s one of the least nuanced songs in their catalog for that reason and there are others that massage my brain much more effectively. Try Analog Kid, thecamera eye, or, distant early warning for example. Rush on sister!

You're so charming & bubbly, Red! I love how much you're loving my favorite (for decades) band! Do you realize that you are now hooked?! I can tell you're never coming out of that rabbit hole of Rush! Sometimes you may think you've exited it, but then pop! Back down you go! Just giving you fair warning Red. The whole experience of their music can blow your mind, especially when listening with a little 'Passage to Bangkok', wink, wink! I will lay off the blah, blah, blah about so many things that I usually go on and on about when I leave comments to Rush reactions. But I do need to give you my vote for your next Rush reaction video for educational purposes. ua-cam.com/video/PQ5i3KaIPw8/v-deo.html The song, is one of their greatest, but not well known outside rush fan circles. Natural Science, that's my pick for your next Rush reaction video. Following is a great 'sampler' of Rush for anyone wanting to explore this phenomenal band for their own educational purposes. My wife and & I saw this tour for one performance in 2012. Little did we know it would be our last time to see them ever, after going to their concerts for Decades! Sniff, sniff😪 Godspeed, Professor! If anything, I had hoped the band might retire in a few years and 'make it out alive' of the music business. That thought saddened both her & I so it was important to get to time TM tour when it came around. Red, I think you will really enjoy the energy of the TM tour, and the short films during the intermissions are really clever, IMHO. It's time for an intermission for us to have some brain surgery, Hahaha! Geddy makes me laugh with that, especially because I had two surgeries to remove a brain tumor back in '98. But I'm still here and improving every day, thank God!! I'll bet you'll laugh at the short films. The real story of Rash, Lol! ua-cam.com/video/a0sbKY0K5as/v-deo.html Keep those Rush reactions coming, Red! It's ok to be a 'Rush Nerd' these days, unlike back in '76 when I fell down the hole in High School. The world had to kind of 'catch up' with Rush. I just know you're going to enjoy your time doing so! BeGood, BeWell, BeReal.
