Great reaction turn amazing song by an amazing band in front of an amazing crowd dad sing along with the Melody. I think I hit the dislike button by accident so I can order that. I did press the like button again so hopefully my vote goes positive again
It's no shock that the one person who stepped up to participate in the "non existent poll" and be generous is into Rush. They just want to share the joy. Mission accomplished I'd say.
Geddy Lee wrote the book on bass. (Literally: it's called _Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass_). YYZ is widely considered to be one of the hardest songs for bass players to play. :-)
Neil’s solo was in Frankfurt Germany, this is in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Europe/South America. After all their decades of touring, RUSH had never been to South America. This is why the crowd is going bonkers, it was their first time there. Those fans thought it was never going to happen. Until it DID.
Fun fact: Due to massive pirating in South America, RUSH didn't think they were that popular due to low record sales and avoiding playing there, although they had music festival offers. Obviously, by the looks on their faces, they were pleasantly surprised. They actually drew a bigger crowd in Sao Paulo the night before.
I'm surprised StickHits did their magic on this concert from 2002. Normally they work on older, unreleased videos from the 80s and 90s. But the Rush in Rio looked and sounded pretty clean as it was released.
Give a listen to Rush / "The Pass" from the very same concert (Rio). It's an extremely powerful song that has gotten a lot of people through some very bad times.
The cult-like following (only the best kind) of this “band” was so strong that tens of thousands of fans from distant cultures, continental & hemispheres, away were gleefully singing to a song, decades old, in unison, that doesn’t even have lyrics, so of course, it was RUSH!!! 🤘🏼❤️🔥
I read a comment elsewhere that is so true, when the audience sings the words of your song with you your amazing when they sing the songs music your a legend. Never have been to a concert where the crowd sings the instrumental back like this
This is such a fun video to watch; the crowd was insane! Geddy Lee is one of my favorite musicians; in addition to being widely considered one of the best bass players in rock, within Rush he also sings lead and plays keyboards and synth foot pedals, sometimes at the same time! Another cool thing about him is that he and Alex have been best friends since they were 13 years old; were band mates in Rush and remain best friends today at age 71. If you want to see Geddy really showcased in an instrumental, check out 'Leave That Thing Alone' from the Live from Cleveland tour in 2011. For a follow-up to that, check out 'Where's My Thing? Here It is" live from Dallas, which features both a Geddy Lee bass solo and a Neil Peart drum solo.
Another instrumental performance in which Geddy nails it with the bass, is "Leave that Thing Alone", as performed in their Time Machine 2011 show in Cleveland.
Unbeknownst to Rush they were absolutely huge in Brazil. Basically it started with their song Closer to the Heart, which became like the national anthem in Brazil. So when the band got back together in 2002 after a 4 year break following the unexpected deaths of Neil's daughter, followed within a year by his wife of 20 years passing... this was one of their first stops on their getting back together tour .
It wasn't just Brazilians there. It is so rare to get a really big band in South America, they fans will travel the continent to go to a show like this. I have a little bit of inside baseball on this since my wife is from Venezuela.
Rush had a huge fan following in Brazil, but the band was unable to tour there for a long time. The fans there probably thought they would never get to see Rush in concert. When Rush finally toured there, the fans knew the music well, which could explain why they were "singing" along with an Instrumental song.
13:17 You mention you want to hear the studio version of this song. Highly recommended! I also recommend the version played on their second live album "Exit Stage Left" as this one has one of Neil Peart's most famous drum solos included, the YYZ drum solo! Trust me, you will never forget it.
YYZ is a huge fan favorite at any RUSH concert. I was fortunate to see them 6 times over the years and thy "nailed" it every time! P.S. I believe the Neil Peart drum solo you reacted to was from Frankfurt, Germany. Thanks much for this one! 😄☮
Geddy is one of the top five bass players that's ever lived... oh yeah and he is the lead singer and plays all the keyboards too. The bass player in guitar player met in elementary school and were best friends from the time they were in 5th grade together and still are
Another great thing about these guys, they all got married young and all stayed with their wives that are actually Family Guys whose families are all friends at 3:50 years of Fame and fortune..... just think about that. These guys are actually grounded human beings that don't think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread because they're musicians Getty is for instance a huge baseball fan with a huge memorabilia collection of baseball stuff
Great emotional and tech reaction. You love bass? Then you'll 'Love' Geddy, he's Amazing. Listen to the studio recording and you'll 'really hear' what he's doing as well as them all. And yes, that remaster was Really well done. So glad you enjoyed this, I enjoyed your reaction, thanks.
The beginning chord riffs is morse code for the letters "YYZ" which is the call signal for the Toronto Airport and close to where the band originated. I know it's only my opinion, but RUSH was the greatest rock band to ever walk the planet!
Imagine getting up and going to buy a new RUSH cd. You knew they would not disappoint. I caught myself laughing at your comments. I love your reactions. Peace.
I'm glad you are discovering Rush, my first concert was a long time ago for them, 1983! Saw them many times after, their videos are great, but the energy at the shows was amazing!! I even got to see bands that became popular as their opening acts!! Such a cool time and this is fun rabbit hole to dive down!!
I believe they played either two or three straight nights in Rio and the crowds were estimated between 40,000 and 60,000 each night at an outdoor Amphitheater
Another tidbit of trivia, Rush is Huge in Brazil, but for more than a decade they were not allowed to play for one reason or another. This is their first concert back in Rio. Electric energy!
They didn't play anywhere in South America because they didn't think they'd have a following there. When they found out they were wrong, they went. (Source: Geddy Lee)
Awesome! Rush is great! After I've been working for 29 years with UPS planes, my company Swissport's contract with UPS ended on August 20 this year. So I did training & transfered to the passenger side of the airport. Because I know this song, I easily answered one of the questions of my training test, which was What is the airport code for Toronto? 😂 You're very pretty btw!❤🥰😍
This Rush tour was their for their an new album Vapor Trails, after a 4 or 5 year hiatus due to the tragic deaths of Neil Peart's daughter in '97 and the his wife followed 18 months later, IIRC, maybe it was sooner than that. Alex and Geddy had no idea if they would ever get back together or not after the death on Neil's daughter and his leaving the band at that time to deal with it. Then his wife so soon to follow, They knew Neil was a personal man, and introvert, but with his daughter's death, he at least had his wife to lean on as well as the band, but after his wife passed, this time they knew to just let him know they were there, but wait and let him come to them when he was ready. By this time both the fans, and Alex and Geddy figured it was a Ghost of a Chance that Rush would ever get back together. Neil took off on a 55,000 mile motorcycle journey across north, central and south American continents, and If I remember correctly during or soon after he started writing his first book, Ghost Rider. But four years later, Neil surprised every one as he was ready to come back into Rush. They had a long tour across North America and Europe, and were going to end the tour at that point, But suddenly, they were invited to tour in Brazil. Rush had never been to Brazil, or South America in general, for any tour. IIRC, they weren't even aware that any of their albums had ever been distributed in Brazil, legal or otherwise. But boy, where they surprised when they got there and found out Brazil was probably Rush's largest fan base in any one particular country! They said the fans knew all their songs and would sing along! They played three Brazilian cities, to sold out soccer stadiums with one of the cities being their largest crowd ever at 60,000 people, but I think Rio was 40-45,000 and it was another city which I can't remember their names, that the 60k crowd was at. But it might have been the Rio show. There is a huge story about the Rio show itself, about the show almost never happing with heavy rains and huge issues with electricals and electronics due to the moisture. But this post is long enough, so I won't get into that. Anyway, there is a Blu-ray video release of the Rio concert, which is what this video is from, and on that Blu-ray disc it includes a documentary of their Brazilian tour that tells the whole incredible story where almost miraculously, everything turned out all right in the end and it was one of Rush's best concert performance not only for the tour, but ever. Just like the miracle of these three genius savants finding each other in life to come together and make Rush, the show near miraculously came together just in time, even the recording of it all that they were very worried about too. I recommend the Blu-ray, but one note about it; the audio is set default to stereo and sounds bad if played that way on a surround sound system (I haven't tried the stereo audio setting with a stereo system, so I can't say if it sounds fine that way or not). You have to go into the audio menu on the Blu-ray and select Tru Surround Sound if you have surround sound, then it sounds brilliant. Of course the remastered videos are even better, but if you want to own the concert show, like me that's a good tip for the most important part of the disc-audio!
I love your reactions, you really enjoy those first listens while also picking up all sorts of insight. The neat thing about this song is that they are basically all playing interesting lines throughout the song. It rewards multiple listens while you focus on something different each time, they are all at their peak in this song. Such a fun song and an amazing crowd.
Geddy's name is actually Gary, but his Eastern European Grandma pronounced it Geddy. So it was. Alex and Geddy were good friends since Jr. High. Neil is the "new guy" which came on with the band on the second album in 1975, recruited from the parts department of his fathers farm equipment store. Neil is considered by many as the best drummer ever, but died in 2020.
Sorry I just found you ,I'm One of the biggest. Rush fans from back in the 70s.Have you heard 2112 yet ,you have to , And I do really like your channel.I like how you react and and you need to grow the likes Rush Is a girl left my own heart
Thanks for the reaction. Great performance, and another great video by Stick Hits. This is not the same show as Neil's drum solo. I would love to see your reaction to the Stick Hits remaster of "Between The Wheels" in Germany, which is the same show as the drum solo. If you like bass, please please please check out "Leave that Thing Alone" from the time machine tour 2011. An Absolute Master Class.
As mentioned in an earlier comment, the syncopated rythm at the beginning of the song is morse code for YYZ, the identifier for Toronto's airport. The song itself represents the, for lack of a better term, hustle and bustle of the airport as they saw it constantly flying in and out of it while on tour.
I've been a bass player since my teens (late 70's). Yes, strong hands are required!! Geddy is one of my biggest influences. I've played in a couple RUSH tribute bands. YUP! It's HARD!! YYZ is one of the toughest to play. Unfortunately tendonitis has taken it's toll on my hands. Mostly retired from playing these days. I don't know how Geddy still does it.
Geddy was inspired by Chris Squire of yes, among others. Try Roundabout by Yes for a class in bass, especially the snake eating itself part. And keyboards and guitar and drums and fantastics vocals
YYZ is the indicator code for the Toronto International Airport. The beginning of this song is in Morse Code for YYZ. Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a licensed pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy and Neil heard it come over the radio and the beat stuck with them. There is an excellent documentary called The boys in Brazil about their tour through there. They were extremely surprised on how popular they were there.
AO! I missed the poll. The Patreonic Temple seems straight forward but then it's like Escher's Endless Staircase. And I ask myself, (like David Byrne, Talking Heads) 'how did I get here?' As usual you say exactly what I think - more closeups of the playing would be good. Yeah like they are like gooood! 🤍 Thanks for the show..👻
Hiya from Canada :) FYI no it's not the same concert as his other drum set was way bigger and gold colored ( lol I am pretty sure it wasn't actually gold plated or anything, just the color of the drum set :) ) Peace and love :) sorry :) The insanely good solo you are referring to was from Frankfurt Germany :) sorry again :)
Wassup? Thumbnail says Blind Reaction but clearly you are reading and recognizing images!!?? 😮 So this off a movie that played in the theater 🎭 The fans there are Soo amped they are singing this instrumental!! Even if were not a fan (?) the movie is awesome! Great Reaction!! Flowers After Rainfall?? Hey! What are you trying to "Petal" here? 🌺 🌹 Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
@@flowersafterrainfall if you like bass and drums, react to Rush's Malignant Narcissism/Da Slagwerker. Geddy plays a fretless bass, Neil literally makes you cry in the middle of his drum solo. Something you have never heard out of a drummer.
If you're interested in seeing more bass players going off, I'll give you two recommendations. Do with them what you will... Dream Theater, "The Dance of Eternity" - ua-cam.com/video/8Ik9qECIWgc/v-deo.html - bassist: John Myung Mr Big, "Addicted To That Rush" - ua-cam.com/video/FD4FqLkXVQA/v-deo.html - bassist: Billy Sheehan
Three comments. First, this is not the same show that you watched for Neil Peart's drum solo. The drum solo is from a 2004 concert in Frankfurt, Germany. But there were washing machines onstage behind Geddy for both shows and Neil wore the same type of hat. Second, comparing the crowd to an ocean is exactly what Led Zeppelin did on their House of the Holy album. It's interesting that you used the same analogy. Finally, this is not hte only instrumental from this show. There is also a performance of La Villa Strangiato, an instrumental based on Alex Lifeson's nightmares. In the middle, he does a little comedy routine that is the sort of stuff you say when you are half-asleep. Very funny. Here is the clip: ua-cam.com/video/4s4HGsIj45A/v-deo.htmlsi=C5ClDQqEhKUG0PBd
If you enjoy bass do yourself a favor and look up Ellen plays bass on UA-cam. She is a very young prodigy and an amazing young lady. She plays bass lines that seem impossible for someone her age.
Pllease??? not so much intro??? You are llllloved REGARDLESS of us reacting!!!!!!!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ Love you!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ RUSH is my band since 1980!! ♥ Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
For sure, a lot of them had the cool and detached thing going to counterbalance the insanity going on around them. John Entwistle was great for that, as was John Deacon and John Paul Jones. Ale from the Warning is great at it also (though she has her moments too).
fun drinking game: take a shot for every time i say the word "like" during the end of the video*

18 schlotsts then. Do the ones that mean 'similar to' or 'enjoy' count? If not then it's only 15.
I don't think I would survive that any way😅

Like, I have, like, alcohol poisoning now and like...gotta like, lay down. But I liked it.
Fun fact, this was Rush's second biggest crowd ever, with 40,000 people. Their biggest concert was one night earlier in Sao Paulo with 60,000 people!
Not just that his fingers are moving so fast, but that the notes he's hitting have enough clear solid punch that they could drive in nails.
What a lovely girl ..great reaction
It's no shock that the one person who stepped up to participate in the "non existent poll" and be generous is into Rush. They just want to share the joy. Mission accomplished I'd say.
Besides being the airport code ( as mentioned below ) the cymbals and then the beginning riff, is actually YYZ in Morse code... amazing song
And the crowd sings along to an INSTRUMENTAL!!
What gets me is the crowd singing along to the guitar lead!
La la ra la, 🎵🎵la ra lara. Lala rala 🎵🎵🇧🇷🫡
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's Pearson international airport. The opening beat is YYZ in Morse code. And us Canadians pronounce z as zed 😊
omg that's amazing i'm so glad you shared that!
@@flowersafterrainfall and just to add, Toronto is their hometown
I remember remodeling houses listening to Rush, total energy!
Thanks I think we all knew that when the album came out over 40 years ago
Just to add a layer of awesomeness, Neil is also a certified pilot and has flown into YYZ many times. Thanks for doing this one.
Geddy Lee wrote the book on bass. (Literally: it's called _Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass_). YYZ is widely considered to be one of the hardest songs for bass players to play. :-)

“ it makes me want to dance “ has NEVER been spoken by a female in reference to a RUSH song ever haha
Congratulations on being the first haha
Gary Lee Weinrib, his European grandmother pronounced his name Geddy instead of Gary. Legend was born!
My new favorite reactor !!
I've read that the crowd for this concert was 40,000, which was eclipsed by the previous night in Sao Paulo which had 60,000. It's mind boggling!
Give a listen to Rush / "The Pass" from the very same concert (Rio).

There is an excellent documentary called The boys in Brazil about their tour through there. They were extremely surprised on how popular they were there.
The Who Wont get fooled again live from … studios from 1978. Listen to John Entwistle. He is in a class of his own! Enjoy!
Were those Westinghouse or Maytag washing machines behind Geddy Lee? Inquiring minds want to know. Great reaction, thanks!
🤍 Thanks for the show..👻
It isn't the same concert of that drum solo you watched. That solo was in Germany, this was from their concert in Rio.
Fun band you r awesome new sub !!! 😎
Check out primus "Tommy the Cat" for some more phenomenal bass
I played cello then bass for years in a group strong hands do help, After hand injury can't do that long now.. But kudos to you you tried😊 13:39 .
I suggest you watch "La Villa Strangiato" for your next RUSH listen and view. Best wishes and hope for your continued success with the posts.
Don't want an instrumental? No problem, just add 40,000 Brazilians. 😊
Brazil: The country where the crowd sings to the artists!🫡🇧🇷
I believe you saw the drum solo from Frankfurt Germany. It was a different concert from this one.
oh yes, you're right! my mistake, thank you 🙂
@@flowersafterrainfall if you like bass and drums, react to Rush's Malignant Narcissism/Da Slagwerker. Geddy plays a fretless bass, Neil literally makes you cry in the middle of his drum solo. Something you have never heard out of a drummer.
Geddy Lee.
If you like bass look at Chris Squire (Yes) and Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Liquid Tension Experiment)
Solo was Germany
I agree with whatever Markkairiel says. He's such a great guy! ( I'm gonna get in big trouble one day👹)
lol
Geddy is the best.
If you're interested in seeing more bass players going off, I'll give you two recommendations. Do with them what you will...
Dream Theater, "The Dance of Eternity" - ua-cam.com/video/8Ik9qECIWgc/v-deo.html - bassist: John Myung
Mr Big, "Addicted To That Rush" - ua-cam.com/video/FD4FqLkXVQA/v-deo.html - bassist: Billy Sheehan
Z equals zed.
Just want to let you know that Peart is pronounced “peert” not “pert”
thank you :)
Is it "cultural" for Brazilians to come together in unison for music? It is the same in America, believe it, or not, miha.
If you still have a voice after the show, you didn't enjoyed it!
If you enjoy bass do yourself a favor and look up Ellen plays bass on UA-cam. She is a very young prodigy and an amazing young lady. She plays bass lines that seem impossible for someone her age.
***Your music output volumn was way too low. Could barely hear it.
oh what a shame, I'm very sorry about that
@@flowersafterrainfall No problem Flower, you're doing great job, thanks for liking Rush!
Your audio volume is really low
you're right, I should have checked that before uploading, my mistake. sorry for that.
Pllease??? not so much intro??? You are llllloved REGARDLESS of us reacting!!!!!!!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ Love you!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ RUSH is my band since 1980!! ♥ Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Great reaction but your volume was way too low on this one
yes I really should have checked that before uploading, I'm sorry for that.
Maybe it's just me but I always think bass players, except Geddy, look bored when they play.
For sure, a lot of them had the cool and detached thing going to counterbalance the insanity going on around them. John Entwistle was great for that, as was John Deacon and John Paul Jones. Ale from the Warning is great at it also (though she has her moments too).
Cornelius Ellwood Peart, Neil Peart (pEARt) flows so much better.
Best band...ever. 😁
