You don't have to worry about this band blocking you. This is one of the most fan friendly bands you'll ever come across. They produced pretty much an album every year and they toured every album. They really really wanted to make sure that whatever they produced on their albums they could reproduce live for their fans. 'The spirit of radio' in 1980 marked a musical change for Rush after their 70's format of making epic and complex prog rock music... After the 1978 album 'Hemispheres'... Rush were burned out making musically challenging records and wanted to have fun again... In 1979, there was a new British music scene in post-punk rock UK and bands like The Police... Joy Division... The Human League... Simple Minds... were breaking big w/ a new sound called 'new wave'... and Rush's members became fans of that sound that incorporated synthesizers and beats.
As a result, Rush produced the album 'Permanent waves' and it gave a huge nod to the British new wave bands... it became a platinum record and took Rush into the 80's. They still experimented w/ epic songs and complex structures but it was in a simpler and catchier approach.

RUSH is one of those bands that never disappoints! The entire 2112 album is amazing! Another band with a unique sound that has a killer first album is Boston! No need to apologize for listening to different artists or genres.God created us all with creativity, and music is a prime example. We may not all like the same thing, but we can appreciate gift of all kinds of music.I grew up in the 70's and love that time period of music.I live 70's rock and metal. My dad taught me to live old style crooners like Bobby Darin and Tony Bennet.I adore really old ragtime jazz, especially Louis Armstrong! I love Motown, like the Temptations and Sam Cooke,Etta James, and so many early greats.I love Chris Stapleton and bluesy Country.I love John Denver and Karen Carpenter to soothe my soul...Who doesn't love some psychedelic 60's vibe, and the grit of Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker? The point is,it's a great big world full of creative music out there, and what hits you a certain way,may not hit somebody else exactly the same. It's all good. The beauty is in the discovery!🎛🎸🥁🎻🎺🎹🎙🎶😉😎

"The Spirit of Radio" is the call sign for CFNY {now called The Edge}102.1 FM in Toronto. A radio station that plays all types of popular music, which is why the song changes up from pop to reggae to harder rock, like changing stations on a dial. It also shows dj's and reporters {Jim Ladd, Bob Coburn, Donna Halper, David Marsden} in the US and Canada who had a big hand in playing Rush. This song was a Thank You from Rush for keeping not just Their music alive and popular, but so many others.

Rush had a rule: as difficult as their music was to create, they would not perform a song live that they couldn't recreate themselves, just the three of them. No backing tracks, no extra musicians backstage, none of that. So, Alex will play double-necked guitars (6-string and 12-string electric guitars) or will have an acoustic guitar on a stand that he can play before switching immediately to the electric he has strapped on, AND will play Moog Taurus bass pedals with his feet. Geddy also sometimes plays a double-neck (6-string guitar and bass guitar), plus keyboards, plus Taurus pedals, AND he sings. And Neil plays one of the largest drum kits ever seen, and will use every single piece on the kit in some songs. There are a couple of different live performances of their song Xanadu - one from the late 70s and one from 1980 - where you get a real appreciation for them playing a very elaborate song live, playing ALL of those different instruments themselves, and it sounds like a 12-piece band.
Rush was a HUGE influence on a ton of other bands - and not just progressive rock bands but all kinds, from Kiss to the Foo Fighters to Tool to Primus to Nine Inch Nails to the Smashing Pumpkins and SOOOOO many more. The reason was simple: Rush held themselves to an astoundingly high level of musicianship, writing songs that they knew ahead of time would be very difficult to play live, so that they would never get bored no matter how many times they played them. And in that way, they won massive respect from musicians across the board. All the while, they never forgot that the music still had to be great, and they delivered there too. I was lucky enough to see them live 9 times, and those are very treasured memories.

I'm glad you're back in that infinite rabbit whole that is Rush. This is no doubt an amazing song and sure has a lot of people reacting to it. However, you're reacting to one of their very few radio hits. Rush, to a music lover is way more than their hits. But still, their hits are still great pieces of music. If you're going to stick to the hits, I would recommend Subdivisions and Limelight (2 of my all time favourite songs to play on the drums), Step 2: the Fear Trilogy. The order is in reverse so that the first song recorded was part 3 Witch Hunt (1981 Moving Pictures) the second song recorded was The Weapon (1982 Signals) and finally The Enemy within (1984 Grace under Pressure). Listen to them in that order. Pay extra attention to the amazing lyrics in all 3 songs. They all talk about fear but in three different aspects: Fear of the unknown (Witch Hunt), fear of power in a broad sense (The Weapon) and lastly the fears within ourselves (The Enemy Within). All 3 songs are widely different in style and sound and 3 rush staples for fans. Check them out... and then we can get serious bro !!!!

Pearl Jam has a reputation of having one of the most loyal fanbases around, but Rush's fanbase is on a whole other level above that. They barely ever got played on the radio back in the day yet every concert was packed and every show was an absolute blast because everyone there was so into it. I have seen them 5 times and that count is on the low end for the typical Rush fan. Truly one of the most amazing bands to ever exist. Every show is like 75% musicians in the audience. Talk to ANYBODY who is big in rock and metal today and ask them who their influences are and Rush is mentioned just about every time.
Check out the Live from Rio version of YYZ, which is an instrumental track off the same album as Tom Sawyer. Your life will never be the same after you see that performance.

Funny enough, the reason Rush was kept from radio play initially was that a rolling stone magazine article gave the opinion that geddy could not sing They said it sounded like screaming. While Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin was touted as the best rock vocal of the time. (Robert has had problems with his voice in later years and reduced his range the last 20 years while Ged kept it up for 40+ years and toured until the end) Rush just kept booking concerts and selling records without the help of radio play for seven years until Moving Pictures release and Tom Sawyer hit the airwaves. And the rest is history. Spirit of the Radio takes a different meaning when you know these facts. They were never angry or arrogant, they just just kept doing their job, and packing the stadiums. Uplifting is a good way to describe the music in the 80’s. Uplifting in a way that prog rock had never been before. Magical. Due in large part to the lyrical genius of the mind of reader Neil Peart. But the keyboard came out of Ged like a magical spell of sound. They turned a new leaf and became the progressive masters of the airwaves. But the concerts…. Nothing like being in a huge room of people excited by the music like Rush. I know people have spent wads of cash following them around the country to see the same show in different cities. Serious fans. It’s the vibe. Positivity
Working man dude. If you want the hard rock. First album. RUSH. Check it out. Geddy did it. It was their first incarnation. WORKING MAN

After WW2 the BBC controlled the airwaves in Britain, by old conservative farts. They did not like rock and roll, or anything progressive. But along came Radio Luxembourg, a station that played outside of Britain and thus the BBC had no control. And that led to Pirate Radio (a movie of that same name was made), a small ship that was anchored just outside of British waters and played what the BBC hated. And yes, it was a sensation. So here is this 12 year old kid living in Northern France, huddled under his bedsheets at night, playing Radio Luxembourg. That experience got me in on the ground floor for rock and it was a wonderful experience.
So this song is many things, but it is also a tribute song to the radio stations and disk jockeys (Jim Ladd, Bob Coburn, Dave Marsden) who strayed outside of the tight commercial lane and brought to the fans the true genius and variety of music we see today.
Listen to the live version at ua-cam.com/video/nlrjt1tmKoU/v-deo.html and you will witness the love between the band and fans.

Arg!!! It makes me cry every single time.
The story of radio is going to be lost. For those of us that grew up poor in Texas the radio was EVERYTHING.
In particular Mexican radio border blaster stations.
    Lots of songs reference it.
    Mexican radio (obviously)”
    wall of voodoo”
    “Heard it on the x”
    ZZ Top. Lots of others.
Amazing song. And what a great tribute to Neil❤

Rush is one of the most iconic bands in rock history. I eventually morphed into a metal head, but now at 59yo, love creative art (music) of all kinds. Literally all kinds. I grew up and was truly exposed to music listening to an AM radio that my grandmother gave me back in the early 70’s, usually at bedtime.

I was blown away when I saw Rush live in the 80's. At one point Geddy Lee was playing hammer on bass, keyboards, foot pedals, and singing lead vocals all at the same time. They were all incredible musicians. You have definitely stumbled upon a whole different caliber of musicians when you started exploring Rush.

Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song.
