Iconic song from RUSHs' debut album.. That's original drummer John Rutsey on the drums. Neil Peart replaced him after the release of this album because John had some health issues, and of course, the rest is history. Rush debuted in the US on Cleveland radio station WMMS, thanks to an astute young music director from Massachusetts, Donna Halper. As a resident of that great city, I was a beneficiary of that serendipity. The song that launched Rush to success was "Working Man," from their titular album "Rush."
WMMS in Cleveland played this song and "introduced" Rush to the US. John Rutsey was the drummer on this album, his only album with the band. I can't remember all the Rush tunes you've listened to, but check out "The Trees" and "Xanadu" if you haven't already.
I can't believe you have not done this already, this is them in their hard rocking infancy with an iconic song that was them announcing their budding magnificence to the world. Another great rocker you probably have not done from them is Anthem off the 2nd album Fly By Night, the studio original still gives me chills and gives off Led Zeppelin vibes. No, it's John Rutsey on drums, before he was replaced by Neil because of Rutseys complications from Diabetes (he was very sick). Neil went on tour with them to promote this album the song is on. Donna Halperin, a radio DJ in Cleveland, Ohio, needed a long song so she could take a bathroom break. She would get calls from her listeners thinking it was a new Led Zepplin song and asking when the new album will be out. She is like, no this is Rush, a Canadian band. Neil wasn't on this record, the original drummer was named John Rutsey, he had to leave the band due to health problems. Neil joined on their second album named "Fly By Night".
The DJ in Cleveland discovered this song when she was looking for a “bathroom song” or a song that could play long enough to go to the bathroom and get back before it ended! After playing it, the station was flooded with calls requesting the “ new Led Zeppelin song!”
I first saw Rush in Cleveland in '74. They were the opening act. Their opening song was Working Man. My buddy and I were hooked! Oh, the next band was Manfred Mann and the headliner was Uriah Heep! This was my first concert ever and defiantly not the last!

Pre-Neil Rush, before he brought in his deeper lyrics. This album was more influenced by their 60's rock heroes like Cream and The Who than progressive rock, that came when Neil joined.
I'm gonna post this to several of ya'lls videos with the hope that you'll see it..I just heard the best song for y'all to ever cover and I think it would be a song both of y'all would just love. The video is titled When the Roses Bloom Again - Barry Gibb & Ricky Skaggs. It's got over 2 mil views I could rewatch it over and over.
I guess I am an old fart. I bought this album when it came out and was lucky enough to see them when they came to the States on their first US tour. If you want some fun, you can find a video of them playing this live. I am not referring to the Time Machine video, but a video of the original 3 men doing this song (ua-cam.com/video/ndjCXG_c9kk/v-deo.html). This song broke the band in the US. There is a famous radio station in Cleveland (WMMS) and they had a female jockey who used this song to take a toilet break. She could put it on and have time to pop out of the studio. They had an enormous reaction to the song and the rest is history.
This song from their debut album is such a banger. Alex and Geddy are just plain dirty. John Rutsey, the original drummer here is no slouch. Neil joins them for the next album and will always be the 'new guy'. Great reaction!
I use John Rutsey as a lesson. You see, most of the time you are exposed to advertising. Advertising is always black & white (this = good, that = bad). In life it's normally not that way, there can be 2 greats at the same time. John's career was cut short, I think it's fair to say he was never going to be the lyricist that Peart was. But damn, that guy shouldn't be discounted. There can be more than 1 beautiful woman in a room, just gotta let the Wife know who the most beautiful one is. PS. I wanted to add that this song is THE Rush song. You can see an animated version of the story in a video for "The Spirit of Radio", but yeah; this song got played in Detroit during some lean times. People thought this was a new Zepplin song, I don't hear it but ok. But yeah, this is the theme song for 10-12 hour days, back to back to back. Not ever getting any further ahead. So glad I don't have to do that now.
That's John Rutsey on drums. Neal's intro to the world in Rush was the song "Fly by Night", which was the very next song in their catalog after this. You should do it if you haven't, really cool song.

John had complications from Type 1 Diabetes if I recall correctly. I have T1D too and it can be a real pain!
He didn't have the health to go touring the way they did unfortunately for him.
@ The G MAN - Thank you for the history lesson. Did not know that Neil wasn't the original drummer.
You should watch them do this live on the 2011 Time Machine Tour! Even better than when they were 20 when this version was recorded.

The video is titled When the Roses Bloom Again - Barry Gibb & Ricky Skaggs. It's got over 2 mil views I could rewatch it over and over.
Bouncing in the chair reflection makes Louis Armstrong pic appear to be playing in time with the song. Anyone else notice it or am I just a freak?
Amber needs to hear , " here again" from this album
Check out the live version. Alex really gets down on the solo.
Agree with those suggesting the live in Cleveland version from the Time Machine tour - never ceases to please and amaze! 😈❤👍😎
8:30 ohhhh NOOOOO...... the working man is NOT done. Putting in that OT!!!! for the ending.
1st album! I love them all!
One of the great solos all time. Alex ripping it
Now you need to check out
Rush
Working Man
Live In Cleveland
My favorite RUSH song 😈🤘 at work now watching your videos.
Watch the documentary on Rush, "Beyond the Lighted Stage." Amazing!
You guys are in it! Holy fck this is awesome!!!
That's John Rutsey on drums. Neal's intro to the world in Rush was the song "Fly by Night", which was the very next song in their catalog after this. You should do it if you haven't, really cool song.
Some of Rush's best work no doubt.🤘🏻
Wow...instrumental rush. NIIICE!👊👊☝️🎇🤓
