    Pulling out the power chord, then reinserting was all it took to make the button work again on a 2001 iBookG3. Thanks!

    Good idea. I have to press the dumb power button 50x before it turns on. Apple should provide a real solution since this seems to be an issue for a lot of people

      Thanks Ted P. Let me add that it's a good practice to properly shut down your computer so it can save the wakeup schedule in the system. When there's a sudden power blackout and your wakeup schedule is for tomorrow, chances are you will have a long time pressing the power button until it boots . I recommend investing on UPS next time to avoid unexpected loss of power.

      @@stevegraysonchannel There is a "Start Up automatically after a power failure" option in the Energy Saver control panel. SO you can have that checked and when the power comes back on the iMac will reboot automatically.

    Many thanks, Steve 🎁 your solution has made our day 😊 as my husband and daughter took our Mac 🖥️ (2011) to our nearest KRCS but they don’t fix macs as old as ours, and to find someone who could retrieve our files somehow 😂.
    So turning once more to UA-cam (I fixed our dishwasher like this), found your video. Well we’re all over the moon 🌙.

    I just want to say that plugging both from the wall and the computer makes no difference. There is something else going on, be it directly related to the power button or something internal. Most likely it's some type of faulty power button that is the common issue

    I have a late 2009 imac that I hadn't used for 8 years. Someone wants to buy it but wants High Sierra to run on it. I started it up and El Capitan was running on it. I then confirmed that LATE 2009 imacs can indeed run High Sierra. So I started downloading High Sierra from the app store and during the installation process the screen just went black. Now it no longer turns on so it's "dead" after MANY attempts to force restart etc. It looks like it's probably the screen that's black (and not the imac not turning on at all) because when I attach an external disk to the imac, and try to start up the mac, the little led light on the external disk lights up, so it seems like something is being powered-up (although nothing shows on the Imac's screen).. Anyone know of a fix??

      This happens when your mac has not completely finished shutting down and the power was cut off. An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) is recommended. The power settings will be lost if not properly shut down. I'm afraid you may need to try again.

    • @stevegraysonchannel
      @stevegraysonchannel  4 роки тому

      Hello yes most of the time it won't turn on immediately especially if the issue is already with the poor metal contact of the button. Try making multiple soft press with coordination until it turns on. If you're successful then you can set up the Energy Saver part in the video. Good luck.

    Thank you for this informative approach to fixing a power button which was misbehaving! Every morning I would say a prayer and hope it would power up.
    It was nerve racking! I am trying to purchase a refurbished Mac as this one is pretty old, so in the meantime, I need the Power button to work. I set the time for 6am everyday as suggested, so I look forward to tomorrow morning, to see if it works! Thanks again.

      I had the same experience as you do and let me add it’s important to always shutdown your mac properly so it retains the auto power-on settings you set. I suggest you use a UPS to avoid power fluctuations.

  • @muncar5054
    @muncar5054 2 роки тому

    is schedule erased when the power plug pulled?

    • @stevegraysonchannel
      @stevegraysonchannel  2 роки тому

      I don't think it will be erased as long as you always wait for it to properly shut down. During shutdown process, it writes to a log file that includes your start up schedule. I recommend getting a UPS.
