This was my exact situation. I had accidentally broken the power lead when I removed the left speaker to better access the SATA connector to finish the SSD upgrade process. I had only a blow drier for hair, not a heat gun, but it was good enough. I was surprised how tightly the button was attached and I heated it for longer than I thought I had to, but I got it off using an X-Acto craft knife. What a bear. Then the 4 T-5 torx screws to open the switch. I used the shiny slick paper backing from a kid's sticker sheet to protect the existing adhesive on the back of the power button while doing the solder job. Your soldering skills are most impressive, well done. Mine turned out way messier, but it worked. I tested the switch by reattaching the end of the wire to the power supply, but letting the button assembly hang without re-seating it. It worked! In my case, adding glue to put it back wasn't necessary. I will not be making that mistake again, sheesh. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for using such delicate wire for a critical function near removable parts. Your background info about the LEDs, etc., was also highly appreciated! Great job, guys.
I made that same mistake 2 years ago when "fixing" my Imac 21 inches 2014. Customer must know what they did. This is why doing DIY's does not always work for the first time without a proper research. The power cable is routed in a way that when you extract left speaker, power cable breaks if you are no careful enough. Ended up heating power button area so glue would come off and be able to re-solder wires. Thank you for this video. This is a unique video. Thanks for posting. What you did in minutes took me a month to fully figure out. You are a pro with no doubt.

Thanks for the info. I tore the wire upgrading ram. Almost missed it second time I reassembled, saw it and figured heat was the answer, you made it easy for me! Thank you again!
Thank you! I did the same thing for the first time (tore the power cable). The 27” iMacs are different in that area. The repair turned out to be easy. Even having the power button stay put with the same adhesive after the repair was easy. The speaker enclosure and the bottom of the iMac hold it in place anyway. I didn’t chance it with super glue.
Thanks for this. I was removing the left speaker in a VERY dirty 21.5-inch and it suddenly came out. Unfortunately the disconnected plastic plug that connects the start button cable to the power supply caught in the cable groove on the speaker and pulled the cable off the button. I don't have access to a microscope or fine soldering so I simply brought a refurbished start button inc the cable already attached and installed that. 21.5-inch iMacs are more tricky than 27-inch iMacs, and only the 21.5-inch that came with a Fusion or Flash drive have the PCI/NVMe socket, whereas all 2013-2020 27-inch have the the PCI/NVMe socket. The Late 2012 27-Inch has a SATA M.2 socket and you can't fit a NVMe drive.
I'm in Japan and I have exactly the same trouble with my iMac 21.5" 2015. I just have confirmed the fact the LEDs turne on by connecting 2 black wires directly. Power button was removed and 2 black wires will be soldered tomorrow. Thank you nice video information as always!
Thanks a lot you saved me!!! replacing the SSD and ram, I broke the cable of the power button of my wife’s iMac 2017 21inch . FYI I manage to remove the button with a air drier, re weld the cable. The cable was a bit shorter after that but it worked.
I had the same problem. The wires break off inside as the board is hinged making the wires move against the soldered joints each time the button is pressed. I recommend allowing the mac to sleep instead! Putting the button back in place is the hardest. It has to be exactly the right position otherwise the button will scrape against the chassis as you operate it. I positioned and wedged it in place with a cut down pencil eraser. Made sure the button operated smoothly then applied two component epoxy around the edges with a small bladed screwdriver.
Yeah, I tore out that cable from the switch too, but my cable is way shorter so I guess I'll have to add some wire to it before I attempt to resolder it in. At least I now know the switch can be removed and how to attempt it, thank you for making this video.
Thanks for the video! i was waitng for a tutorial about how to fix a broken power cable. Happened here on a imac late 2012 21inch still using ¨plan b" to power on the imac 🙂 use a reed contact on the power cable. but with your tutorial i know a little bit more how to remove that power button in that difficult spot.
Thanks, this is a great video. I have a similar issue with my case the power button is okay. Only the first led is turning on. I can hear the hard drive spinning when I press the power button, but no lights other than the power cable connected LED. Can I assume that the power supply is damaged? Thanks.
The exact same thing happened to mine and I will solder the cable together thanks to your video!!! Does it matter which side of the cable goes on which side of the little circuit board? Also, which glue did you use to put the button back? Thank you for this video once again!
Helpful tip, use WD40 instead of heat. You apply it by the edges and when you insert the spatula it comes out very easy. WD40 is the kryptonite of the glue.
Very informative,, ive one just like this similar,, doesn't switch on at moment ? im hoping the issue is similar to this, awaiting suction pads to remove screen, il update this when i attempt repair,s ??
Xindak - You’re right! I think he got lucky that it didn’t quite make continuity. The button/switch just makes continuity with the other wire on the other side which is isolated, but if the first wire was grounded well enough, the power supply may not know when the button is pressed!
Same thing happened to me.... ended up buying a new button on ebay for 25.00 bucks and not waitinf for it to come in... iw as installed an m.2 and ssd and removing the speaker ripped the cable.
Pretty awesome! NorthridgeFix. Can ram slots be diagnosed simply by software or by pressing D at startup. I bought some new ram which most likely are bad, so I made many many attempts to install them. In doing so I wonder if I broke anything or dust collected in there. I've made so many attempts that it seems that only one of two 8gb ram chips seems to be working. I know macs are fussy and you need to make sure you install them properly so their are things I've done like SMC Reset and Zapped the Pram. My mac doesn't seem to beep when I plug it in for errors. Any ideas before I get someone to take it apart. Thanks in advance. Imac 27 in.5k Retina 2017
@NorthridgeFix is the LED indication the same for an iMac 21,5 4K Retina from 2017 the same?? My power-Button cable seems okay and the first LED-Light is on but the iMac doesn’t start up 🙈🤔
Hi mate , can u help me a little . I try to fix my iMac . I have a problem with LED no2... he doesn’t want to turn on . I bought a new power supply and still doesn’t want to turn on . You have any idea what can be the issue ? Regards MiLian
My thought exactly! I didn’t use superglue myself. It wasn’t needed. The speaker enclosure and the bottom of the iMac, the chin, hold the power button pretty snug already. But the original adhesive works on it’s own during testing before I put the speaker back in.
Hi, someway while soldering the power button is totally damaged. I am able to power the iMac, but cannot shutdown. While shutdown it is getting there on the desktop, else I have to press the two jumper wire together. Is there any other way to shut the imac properly. Not am not able to buy one power button for now. Appreciate any useful suggestions.
If I have no leds, does that indicate a psu fault or some fault between the mobo and power cable? I assumed the power went through the psu before it even touched the mobo
Sometimes I just wonder WHY people think they can work on these computers. And then put in a 120Gb SSD? The screen is at least $600, your time and repair cost all for a shitty 120Gb SSD :-)
My imac, only black screen All diagnostic lights is on And no beep and startup sounds Already try clean ram and replace the battery and still black screen any help? Please
Hello, im very desperated. I bought an 09 27“ imac, the thing runned beautiful but i had to ship it, so the mac broke and the screen didnt turn on after i received it. Im a mechatronics student, i have fundamental knowledge on circuits but imacs are new to me. Now my question ist, is there any short current protection, im scared that the main board got some high current, because my house went dark, the security switch went off, from the short current. An wheren can i find the leds for control? Is it possible to flash the screen, to see if their is a picture? ( Black screen failure) Maybe you can contact me for a chat. Im so close to a breakdown.

I did this 20 minutes ago and I'm ready to cry.

Excellent video. I have power issue where no power. Could be power supply or power button. Thank you and keep up the good work sir 👍🏼🙏🏼
My everyday Go to channel. Great job once again.
hey great video as always ,can you say what glue you used to glue the power button

Great catch! Thanks for the education!
Thanks for the video!

Did you figure out if it matters what side the cables go on having same problem
Bigboss can disassemble and assemble anything ....
RAJESH KUMAR BEHERA
It is true
This worked for my mom’s old iMac, thx.
Great job. My problem is similar, but when macs sill on, the fan stays in high speed and very slowly. When turn off, no more power on.
@marco Sepulveda Marco, não teve solução ainda. Troquei a smc e mesmo assim está instalável.
Im not a electronic guy, but I love watching the repair processi
you came in clutch with this one! Thank you
Your video helped me fix the power cable thanks:)
Helpful tip, use WD40 instead of heat. You apply it by the edges and when you insert the spatula it comes out very easy. WD40 is the kryptonite of the glue.
You better not be joshin
thanks!

cool man, I love when it costs nothing. I'd just solder it and done
when you solder the wire, twist the wire fibers, it's easier to solder them
Yes teach him
Hahahahaha
Twist, pre tin, easy soldering
@@earumamaadu look at 8:23, did you see one wire fibers, touching the metal plate switch? I dont want teach anyone, but here is mistake.

If only all jobs were that straightforward eh 👏
Great job again like always
Damn... just snapped mine off too. :( Thanks for the video, going to fix it right now!
Same problem here, didn’t think they would hide the power button cable in the speaker
thank you
Bravo & excellent. You guys are great.
Big Boss....nice job
Which two jabroneys gave this video a thumbs down this is great work. Imac’s aren’t easy to repair.
when a hard job looks easy

They only fitted a 120GB SSD? That will be full in no time at all!

What a soldering station do you use?
see hi the türkiye nice jop good work guys
How did you tested the button without being connected? Im afraid of using tweezers and getting electrocuted

hello, does it matters what side the cables go on what side?
How did you execly jump it? Because i do not know how to do that and next tot that my motherboard has power and my psu has power but no start up
Excellent ... Well done ...
Nice work guys!
No the problem is the customer not the cable lol. nice job.
Love from India 🇮🇳
Good job bigboss
Only issue why did you use Super glue? If suddenly wire is broken again or replace hard disk or any parts?

how much did u charge for this job ?
$3000
That’s one expensive SSD upgrade.
yeah! and all for a 120gb (!) ssd...

Uffs thank you, tahts exactly my imac A1418 problem !!, borken button cable !
I want to buy the microscopic camera which you have please help me
same problem but after resolder wire the button dont clic properly i dont know why
@apple thats absurd that those lights are not external
What is the music used at 09:15 ?
And uffff my ears that scratch at 10:30
If I have no leds, does that indicate a psu fault or some fault between the mobo and power cable? I assumed the power went through the psu before it even touched the mobo
my mac doesn't have LEDs that I can find, yet every video I've watched talks about them.

That made me wonder too. All the hassle for a small 120GB SSD doesn't seem to be worth it.
Excelente!

You are genius!
Terrible soldering job on those power on wires. Why didn't you twist the exposed wires 08:17 so they are not frayed before soldering?
My imac, only black screen
All diagnostic lights is on
And no beep and startup sounds
Already try clean ram and replace the battery and still black screen any help? Please
الله يعطيك العافيه
nice work. should have upsold customer on a 1TB ssd.
Watch that SSD fail a week later.
Apple is ridiculous, you need to remove the screen to replace the hard drive.
CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE THE APPLE PART NUMBER FOR POWER BUTTON. THANKS

How did you make the two pins touch each other to turn on the iMac ?
did you ever figure this out?
