Cx-5 Signature is such a pleasure to drive. Lot as of power, great handling, premium feel and of course, a real 6 speed transmission tuned to perfection
I recently purchased a Mazda CX-30. It wasn't even on my list of potential or preferred purchases at the beginning of my research (beginning in late-summer 2022). I leaned toward Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Ford. However, all of my research pointed to Mazda being the best value choice for the compact and subcompact SUV/crossover segment. For Toyota, I was considering the C-HR, Corolla Cross and RAV4. For Honda, I considered the HRV and the CRV. For Subaru, I considered the Crosstrek and Forester. For Ford, I considered the Bronco Sport and the Maverick. I also considered the Hyundai Santa Cruz (it just looks cool) until I realized just how cheaply it was made under the hood and beneath the vehicle. What won me over for Mazda? Quality. The moment you sit in one, you're surprised. The materials are quality. The cabin is extremely quiet. The engine has more horsepower/torque and doesn't use a CVT transmission (which -- in the best of cases -- will eventually be problematic). Mazda (including the CX-30, CX-5 and CX-50) is superior in quality to the point that it doesn't feel that it belongs in the same class with its competitors. Rather, Mazda feels like it should be considered in entry luxury crossover/SUV segments. Even the non-touchscreen turned out to be a positive rather than a negative for me. The Mazda infotainment system is very similar to the BMW's system -- but Mazda just does it better. I just feel that you're getting the best bang for the buck with Mazda now.
So in your opinion mazda CX5 better than Honda ZRV ? For your info. The prices are MaZda CX5: 100,000 SAR (Full) Honda ZRV: 127,000 SAR (Standard 2024)
@@zaend2195 I would argue that the Mazda CX-5 is a better vehicle than the Honda ZR-V -- particularly given the difference in cost in SAR. I live in the U.S. and the Mazda CX-5 is significantly better than the Honda HR-V (it has a different name in North America). In fact, the HR-V is actually less costly than the CX-5 in North America. The CX-5 offers a more premium interior and better standard options than the ZR-V. Plus, the CX-5 comes with more HP/torque, standard AWD on high grade and up and a better driving experience (in terms of comfort).
Have a 2005 crv, most trouble-free vehicle we have ever owned. 273000 miles; runs like new. just bought a cx-5, main reasons: 1. No Cvt trans., solid six speed. 2. Quiet, can now hear music. 3. Crv handles well, cx5 handles better. Crv is more valuable now as it is the around town beater, keeps mileage down on the cx-5 Ed c
I think that both of these are great options, but I prefer the CX-5 over the CR-V. The Mazda just offers more luxurious features and is better on the road.
@@Antiorganizer that’s why I prefer CX5 or VW now. Honda Toyota got stolen a lot. You get what you paid for. Internet always said how BMW Mazda is. Well, it’s not even close TBH. It’s just pretend to be luxurious 😂.
@@noobwow2009 I almost went for a used CX-5 turbo a while back. It had a runroof (not pano though, obviously), and had this leather stitching, soft interior. It was incredible! But I got nervous because it was past the comprehensive warranty and not that much left on the powertrain. I got nervous about the turbo. But the ultimate spoiler was the rear seats being too cramped, plus the trunk is so weird narrow. They failed to recuperate some of the lost fhe wheel wells. Instead of hugging around it, they just plunked down these walls and a hole bunch of hollow space behind it is lost. This doesn't work for families. So disappointing. And then Mazda's newer options are so expensive. I'm afraid that Mazda has nothing for families that's reasonable, I'm afraid. Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, VW, Toyota, is leaving Mazda in the dust. Perhaps the Japs' aging population is making them forget about families or something...
After much research I decided on the Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus, I've had it for a few weeks and am truly satisfied. So many features and comfort options just sold me, not to mention the safety rating. Great vehicle.
I went with the model just below yours the regular Premium but I’m envious of your hud display. I’m very happy with how it drives and the Bose system is just amazing. They are really good looking vehicles.
Cx5 is my choice, I’m a single 28 year old, it’s just my mom and I at home and she needs a high vehicle due to her hip prosthesis, we don’t need the extra space, we own a cx5 and we are more than satisfied and very happy with it. No issues at all.
This is me as well, I’m a single 29 year old and it’s mum and I at home, she was used to a lower vehicle as she has an i30 but she drives a lot less now due to a broken toe that happened in December last year and then a torn hamstring in Feb so I drive a lot more now. She’s taken a little time getting used to getting in and out of a higher vehicle like mine but now she loves it, I’ve got a 2022 Akera Turbo (Turbo Signature in the US) and I love it to bits, still running in the engine and the efficiency on the highway is insane here in Australia, I’m getting average about 6.5L/100km on highways (approx 36mpg) and about 9.5L/100km in city (approx 24.75mpg), my combined is about 8.7L/100km (approx 27mpg) I’ve only done about 5000km in the 6 months I’ve had it so the engine isn’t run in fully either.
I narrowed my search down to the CX-5 Turbo, CX-50 Turbo, Rav4 2.5L 8-speed and CR-V Sport Touring; all of which are fantastic vehicles. I am going with the CX-5 turbo because of the superior interior, acceleration, ventilated leather seats, handling, seating position, quietness and overall ride. The CX-50 seems like a squished CX-5 and the quality is just not the same. Just open and shut the doors of both and you’ll notice the difference. The drink holders of the CX-50 were way up front against the dash, whereas a tall-boy beer or a 60oz coffee may not fit. There is very limited availability of the non-Meridian trim. The Meridian seemed styled after a Subaru. Rav-5 is good, but I cannot find a 2.5L 8 speed AWD XLE Prem within 100 miles without paying into 40’s, albeit FWD models are available. It also has rubber seats without ventilation. The Honda CRV is very nice with a great cabin [my current ride is an Accord 2.0T 10-speed]. I tried to like it, but it seemed like a mini van on a compact platform. The nose is way forward of the front wheel, and I would have to buy an aftermarket spare tire kit [$400+] to throw in the back for road trips. Plus, it would cost $3,500 more OTD than a CX-5 Turbo. The two things to the CX-5’s disadvantage were cubic feet and MPG. There is plenty of room for a few suitcases, guitar amps and mulch in the back. Maybe not the best for growing families. Because of the ‘premium’ price and dealer convenience fees on the price of the Honda CR-V [37 hwy], the payback on gas saving was at 82,415.5 miles @ $4.00 a gallon. Likewise, compared to the 2WD Rav4 [34 hwy], it costs $2.14 an hour more to drive the CX-5 at 70 mph. The cost difference for an 8-hour road trip would be $17.08. To me [and my gentleman’s size derriere], it’s worth the price for the comfort.
The CX5 Signature competes with the premium European brands. The CR-V is not on that level. Mazda is a great alternative for someone who likes value, fun and reliability and not stuck on a label like BMW, Mercedes or Audi. We looked at the options a few years ago and couldn't be any happier with our 2020 CX-5 Signature.
@@techocrazylol I'm 6 feet 1 and my brother in law is 6 feet 2 and we have plenty of room. Yes it's a bit smaller than CRV or RAV4 but it's not "for small people" as you say.
@@chuckg4947 It is cramped. I think that people that want to like it, will do things like moving the seat a bit up to make themselves feel better about their decision. But then reality hits when a tall person in front wants the seat the furthest back position, and then someone 5 10 + in the back having the knees against the rear seat. Or someone having one of those reverse baby car seats in the back. Compare that to a lush CR-V or Rogue or RAV4, and it really hits home how utterly cramped the CX-5 is. And that's not opinion based, but an observed fact.
@@Antiorganizer no question it depends on the size of the occupants. The five passengers were either slightly below average height of men and women or slightly above.
@@Antiorganizer I agree with you.. I bought a CX-5 back in February, and we have a front facing car seat in the back and my son is always smooshed with his leg room. If I knew this when buying, I probably would’ve went with the CR-V!
Just bought a 2023 CX-5. Love it and agree with all the items they listed about both. It came down to the quieter sound and the standard items included in my premium level car to what I had to pay to get them in the Honda. Decided I could live without the extra room since the times I would actually need it would be few. Love my CX=5 very happy.
Mazda is also proven in this day and age. They've got decent resale value too. As far as reliability goes, Hondas haven't been at their best for a few years but still class leading, and Mazda vehicles, besides an odd issue with a few of them that were fixed, have got a good track record. Safety is great for both, but there's been a theft problem with the crv recently.
Great overview. The difference in fuel economy is big until I ran the numbers. I drive 70% highway and 30% city. Currently Honda dealers are gigging customers above MSRP, while Mazda is offering deals below MSRP. The cost difference for comparable models is about $2350. At $4 a gallon, it cost $0.044 per mile more for gas for the Mazda. The break-even is about 53,000 miles.
I went the CR-V route. The CX-5 and Rav4 are also great. It just comes down to some personal preferences. If you're looking in this segment, it's worth checking out all three. They all have pros and cons for sure.
These were might top two choices when buying a new car. Was able to drive them back to back and Ended up going with the CX-5 because of the acceleration, handling, road noise performance.
I’ve owned Hondas since 1983, with no issues. With their track record, it’s really hard to switch. Just purchased the Sport Touring CR-V and love it. I’m sure I would love either, but a few little things tipped the scale for us, including grade of fuel, (regular v premium) and larger storage compartment.
It still baffles me that Honda doesn't offer a Panoramic sunroof, ventilated seat and a 360-degree camera, all of which are available from every other competitor. It's also weird that the taillights have been downgraded to partial LEDs because the last gen had full LED's all around
I like this. 4Runner did that 09 going into 2010. I can buy a bulb at Canadian Tire if it ever goes out. When the LED goes out, it’s over $650CND to fix instead of $10.
@@Someoneonthisplanet1979 I know that the last gen CR-V had LED issues, they do go out. Same with house LED builds that are never supposed to go out. They can all break.
Both show excellence and I have owned both Brands...Currently Honda CR-V's are always over sticker...not a true value..but the Cx-5 are at sticker and more than often can be found 😊discounted below MSRP... If you need and want more space Honda, but so far most new owners of the Hybrid Power-train are not getting the mileage promised...If a overall better driving experience and a larger space is not a requirement the Mazda...and most recent comments from owners indicate their happiness with the overall... 🙂 IMO...both are solid😎
Yeah, you can't buy a new honda with blindspot, unless it was made a while ago (no idea when the cutoff was). I was told it can't be added later, either. :/
You’re correct, but they’re way overpriced for a car that doesn’t have 360 camera, HUD and panoramic sunroof. The infotainment screen is also laughably small for the highest trim.
@@wantsanewvehicle I just bought my CRV sport hybrid and it has the Blindspot detection. It does suck for the price though that it does not have a spare tire. I just traded in my Honda accord sport 2020 and I absolutely love that car, just not AWD which is a downfall for me.
CX5: less road noise, slightly more premium feeling, aged platform but still good, design, longer warranty; CRV: more space, more utility, new platform, hybrid (at least on EU soon); I bought CRV 3 years ago and I am very satisfied with it
CX5 win for sure here. Better build quality, better warranty (3years/unlimited in canada). The 2.0 and the 2.5 are very reliable engine. The CRV 1.5 engine is under powered for the car weight and the car is boring as hell to drive. Build quality is average. The CX5 will be favoured by younger ppl and the CRV will be favoured by the older crowd, senior mainly. We used to have one of each. Me CX5 and wife CRV and every time she was using mine she came back to me saying "can i have the CX5 has my daily for a while?" She is not a car person and all she want is to get from A to B. So to me that pretty clear indication that Mazda has done something that Honda did not. She is now running the 2023 sport turbo trim and she is loving it even more. The no touch screen thing is the way to go. Once you get used to the knob it is way faster and cause a lot less distraction will using it. Remember you are driving, focus should be on the road not on the touch screen. The wireless carplay can be added with a module plugged in the center console bin for 20$.
You did the comparison perfectly with the side-by-side visuals and the point-by-point comparison. People shopping in this segment will likely narrow it down to these two. I've driven both and your observations are spot-on. This may be the definitive shopping reference for people looking at these vehicles. The quality is there for both, with the Mazda still being assembled in Japan. The trunk space is a significant factor. I think singles and couples without kids will make the adjustment either way, but a growing family needs the space on trips, short and long. This current redesign of the CR-V is a significant improvement in all categories. It seems like a much more substantial car over previous years' models. I feel it makes better use of the space of it's footprint and outer dimensions The CX-5, which hasn't changed much over the past few years, has a snugger fit inside the cabin, even though it is not particularly compact on the outside. The naturally aspirated 1.5 in the CX-5 is surprisingly adequate and smooth. My only recommendation outside of the thorough coverage here is to make sure the service department where you buy your Mazda or Honda, where most buyers will likely service their Hondas and Mazdas that they eventually purchase, is a fully, dedicated operation, instead of some weird basement, underfunded operation of the dealership.
Totally disagree with the family statement. We expand the family a few years ago and i can assure you have plenty of space for everything. Has the kid get older you will get back more space simply by not having to carry with you the foldable crib, stroller, diapers bag etc.
I feel like the crv is the more practical choice, the one you make with your brain and the cx5 is the more fun choice, the one you make with your heart
Mazda all the way. I like the more premium ambience inside the cabin. It has luxury like quality and the exterior has this factor of being a luxury car without actually having the expense of one. Not to mention its only about $600 difference in price and the Cx-5 has some pretty enticing features that consumers want that the crv is lacking.
Mazda is trying to complete between honda and acura slot. As to Toyota and lexus also. I stick with honda/Toyota then move up to lexus/acura instead of the half bake mazda.
@@precisionlaser2158 Mazda comes with real automatic transmission and not CVT joke that Honda is running nowadays. Mazda is not half baked, it really costs the same and offer much more than the comparative Toyota and Honda right now.
Pretty simple drive them both back to back and pick the one you want. I did a CX-5. And I was a lifelong RAV-4 owner (3 of them). CX-5 is quieter and nicer ride period. Try for yourself.
Love everything about the CX-5 and CX-50 over the CR-V; EXCEPT, no hybrid option for Mazda. Hopefully, the hybrid tech from the CX-90 will make it down to the lower Mazda models.
I'd love to get my hands on a CR-V however with all of them being sold before they even reach the dealership lot. It's real hard to ahold of one. Meanwhile the CX-5 is the exact opposite. There's plenty to choose from including the Carbon Edition. So just on availability alone I'd pick the Mazda. Honda and Toyota really screwed themselves big time when it came to the chip issue. I see Honda and Toyota possibly losing some customers because of it. Meanwhile Subaru and Mazda have more vehicle's on their lots you can order the vehicle you want ( the other 2 you can't). Plus the price the Mazda CX -5 is actually cheaper than the Honda. I've seen CR-V's in that trim for as high as 45k no joke. If it were me I'd go with Mazda.
In Canada I waited 4 months for a cx5.. Though Toyota is 12+ month wait here. But Mazda feels more premium for sure compared to the rest. I can't believe how quieting is.
Which has better brakes? I do prefer the Mazda's styling and interior over the CR-V, bte Honda has some practical advantages, the most important of which is fuel exonomy. It would be nice to see a cost of owning comparison over 100k miles, including insurance costs.
I had a 2021 rav4 (xse with all options) hybrid.. I had no issues. I had it for 13k miles and 1 year..sold it because I wanted something bigger and with more power- also had the opportunity to sell it for $5k over what I paid for it. I have an identical 2023 on order. Test drove a 2023 crv sport hybrid, it's okay..but I wasn't all that impressed and feel the rav4 hybrid is a much better choice. I'll be taking delivery of the rav4 when it comes in (I also purchased a 2023 santa fe limited that meets all my 'requirements', and I'll be keeping that as well).
Touch screen is not a win, Control nub is way better and easier to use than touch screen with alot if finger prints on it. I experianced both , Control nub for ever
These are the two smaller SUVs I love. I just bought a CX 5 on behalf of my daughter and drove it to her (1000 mile trip). Outstanding vehicle. My wife and still have CRV (and a couple of cars). Love the CRV too. It has few years on it but still feels great. Size wise it might be better to compare the CRV with the CX 9, but that one is in a higher price bracket.
Honestly, I think I would truly like the Mazda more, but my thought goes to dealer/maintenance support. My local Honda/Acura dealer is the best and most affordable shop in my region. Maybe the closest Mazda dealer is just as good, but it’s also at least twice the distance from me. So, coming from a TL, an RDX, and an Accord, I think having such a good dealer will keep me with Honda. Bottom line is that they both appear to be excellent options.
We bought the Honda and we love it, it's has a ton of room on the inside, has plenty of power, and you gotta love the MPG and the fact you don't have to use premium gas. So, for us, the CR-V hybrid is our vehicle hands down
The MPG figures for the crv are kinda misleading according to so many people on the internet. Its closer to 30 MPG if you mainly commute through highway
Don't forget that one day you would have to sell it. Mazda has a crappy resale and for that reason I am in favor of the Honda CR-V with one of the highest residual value.
The difference in resale value is negligible. A car is not an investment and that should be the last thing you should look at when buying new. I don’t know where people get this silly notion that that’s a measurement.
@@AmericanHero-c7jThe resale value retention of pre-owned vehicles is a real factor you need to care in some other countries, but not in the U.S. The depreciation ratio of most used cars in the U.S. market is so high that one should never consider it as an viable option for investment
Definitely not Honda, more expensive but has fewer features than the previous model。 Mazda looks much better, clean interior and a kind of luxurious feel etc。
Excellent review.... However, how much will the hybrid battery cost to replace in the Honda if you keep it a long time ... say 15 years or more? All the money you saved over the years will be gone, and then some. Another issue, is that with a hybrid, you have to drive the car regularly... I want to be able to store the car I buy for 6 months of the year.... but you can't do that with a hybrid.
I think some things are relatively more important. For instance, a couple of years of complimentary maintenance is objectively more valuable than LED turn signals. Slightly more subjectively, something like a touchscreen console is a significant plus for user interface convenience. Ultimately though, I think it comes down to whether your priority is the hybrid and associated mileage. JMO. Thanks for another great vid.
Just purchased the CRV one week ago. I wanted to get the CX5 in the first place, however it takes about 4 months of waiting😢 CRV is really nice too, liked it a lot.
I own a CX5 and have driven the most recent model.. Rented a Honda CRV the weekend. But two things were instant disqualifiers..Honda knows they are wrong for that tiny car horn! in 2023 I'm appalled..And second the air vents on the Honda don't allow for any of the typical cell phone mounts. Truly tragic. Allow its confirmed for this class no vehicle feels more luxury than the Mazda without being luxury.
The thing I don’t get is 6 speeds is enough for a manual transmission, so why is everybody knocking 6 speeds in the Mazda , it’s actually really good , it holds gear perfect and feels very direct due to that 5mph lock up. I can’t think of a better transmission in that price range. Yeah there’s some with more gears but short of the ZF8 speed what’s better in a regular car ?
I hate when large companies cheap out on the details that matter led vs incandescent on their top trims. Those are the details that matter and make or break my buying decision.
I bought a new Honda 2.0 hybrid CR-V with the touring package back in January, I bought the 2023 model and not the new redesign offered this year. I am glad I did because I don't like some of the changes Honda made to the CR-V this year in the looks department. Likewise, I test drove the Mazda cx5 before I bought the Honda, I chose the Honda over the Mazda because I didn't want a turbo. Turbos make engine ware out faster, I wanted a car that I could get at least 400k miles on and With gas prices so high now, I also wanted a car that I could get good gas millage with using regular gas. You don't really get 37 or 38 mph like they tell you will get, I get 35 on mine and so does my wife on hers, she has a 2021 model. But that's still a lot better than the Mazda. The Mazda I drove was a plain Jane version, and the inside of the one you showed looked much nicer than the one I drove. I did enjoy driving the Mazda, it had more power and a real transmission rather than a glorified lawnmower transmission like the Honda has. All in All though i am happy with my choice it's not overpowered by no means but it has just enough power. The only complaints I have about it is the transmission and the seats get hard after a long drive, which they fixed this year in the new model I will let you know though when I get 400k miles on it whether I buy another one
@Steve Curtis i have gt as well on both. The 2016 seems to handle better but the 21 gt is so much more comfortable. The 21 also accelerates much better. More refined. They both have different awd systems as well. The 21 has the newer i awd which is much better. But the 16 awd system is still good. Both are excellent in the snow. Great cars.
Just purchased a 2023 MazdaCX- was not told/aware re: Premium Gas. That’s disappointing but I do like the Mazda for other reasons. I found both companies not telling me much up front…and I asked questions… it was my 1st time to buy on my own.
Mazda cx5 looks more expensive inside and out! Honda sell way more than mazda its becuase most car buyers still think honda is more reliable than mazda!
Yes the rear seats recline more in the Honda but no mention of Mazda’s 40-20-40 practical set up. The acceleration noise in the CRV was noticeable and I would attribute it to the CVT
I think America Honda CRV needs update, because in Asia it have 360 camera, Sun Roof, Rear LED turn signal, sliding front signal, Full 10.2inch Speed meter,Brown seats and more
Prius C for commute. Any cheap toyota SUV for grocery/ Short family trips. The savings I made on my 2nd hand prius C made me save its value in fuel over 6 years.
If Mazda introduce non plug in hybrid on CX5 is over for Honda Toyota etc. The only lacking spec is better gas millage. just bought 2024 CX5 turbo premium. Love it
I’m really surprised about the differences between the US and European versions, it is like we’re talking totally different cars here !! The newest Mazda is actually the CX-60, with 327hp hybrid, and quite more expensive than the CRV, also hybrid. Mazda has NEVER delivered a turbo-engine in EU, while Honda did (the one you’re testing there, I guess) but now delivers only hybrid drivetrains in the 2023 CRV…. which we are waiting for until autumn, by the way. On topic then: 1) most importantly, in the EU the Mazda does not come with a 200-plus hp engine. Rather, you get a 2-litre athmospheric 165hp or a 2.5 with 195hp. With a handgear, the 165 does ok. But once teamed with the oldfashioned automatic 6-gear, all the puff is out of it. Slowwwww like a pedestrian. So you need the much more expensive 2.5 engine. But even then it is slower then the Honda CRV hybrid AWD, which has… no gears but a continuous drive 184hp, 315nm electric engine, coupled to a 2.0, 145 hp Athmospheric Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. There wàs a 1.5 turbo, but due to environmental tax, that is discontinued in most countries. 2) In the EU, the Honda top level (executive) does have all the same options as the Mazda in this test: heated rear seats, HUD etc, minus only seat ventilation, which I am not sure the Mazda EU version has either. So, go figure… in a CX5 / CRV comparison by the EU auto press, the Mazda still imposes with the beautiful interior, but overall, the Honda wins… oh, and also pricewise 😊
Just to inform: Europe Mazda CX5 has seat ventilation when buying top trim Takumi version (full option trim). It also comes in brown nappa leather interior (soooo chic) - just ordered mine to collect it in april '04. It has all the features of CR-V hybrid only its - not hybrid :) - Takumi also comes with heated seats front and back. Elektric sunroof. Its a 2.0 liter with 164 PK mild hybrid (just an electric start engine, not really anything like hybrid, but they did have to do something with the name to make it seem like hybrid :)). I compared both - but in the end CR-V is about 10K € more expensive in our country (Belgium: we have 21% VAT so our government earns big when buying a new car :() - so I had to go for the CX5 Takumi. Price of the CX5 45K €. Price of the CR-v in Belgium: starting at 50K - same full option as the CX5 would be around 58K € thats just toooooooo much and Honda never gives any discounts - while with Mazda you can ask for discount (10-12 %)
LB: thanks for the update ! Incidentally the pricing for the CRV in NL became too high as well due to the environmental tax. I do not think Honda will be able to sell them anymore with the current drivetrain. E.g. the RAV4 us now many thousands cheaper - just due to less emissions = less taxes. I also like the Mazda very much, by the way. I am not sure if it's better on the road. We had a CX 5 rental with handgear for a holiday once here in Poland. But as I said we prefer automatic and that was then much too sluggish. Now 4 years straight Honda CRV. If any criticism on the road behavior, it's that the steering at cruise speed is rather direct- more likely a sportscar than an SUV. Actually I wanted to go for the Kia Sorento... more space, more power, more options. But that had a delivery problem: almost one year to wait !! And we had a Dutch lease CRV here in Poland for the first months but obviously could not continue that. New CRV coming a bit late in the year and would be more expensive with the same drivetrain. So we went for (one of the last available) 2022 CRV models, top version hybrid. Overall a good buy here: € 45.000 vs 62.000 in NL 😮. What I miss: better multimedia, some more power, some less fuel consumption and a bit more souplesse in the chassis. Plus an App for remote car management. Especially cold start in winter 🥶. But all in all a lot of comfort. And as we are nearing 70, I do not feel that much need to keep up with the 200+ Autobahn racers. As I did when we had BMW, Volvo with 250+ hp. Still too young to die 😅 !
We already own a Mazda cx9 and it is a really nice vehicle. We now have ordered a CRV sport touring which was chosen for its exterior style, hybrid drive train and rear storage capacity,
I will def be going with the Mazda CX5. One note. The one thing that really bugs me on the crv is they used too in recent models have a functioning dual exhaust system where both exhaust tips vented out exhaust. I have no idea why they went back to a single exhaust system but have 2 exhaust tips showing dual exhaust but only one vents out exhaust? Looks unbalanced and cheap with 2 beautiful chrome exhaust tips but only one working and the other one just as a decoration. Thumbs down Honda. Do yourself a favor and dont cheap out on this important feature. A lot of drivers like the functioning dual exhaust system to show balance from the rear.
I like the CRV better but the pricing is ridiculous, I will be going for the mazda instead. If I get to afford a Honda I will probably be going for a more luxurious brand.
The new CR-V looks great and may be what gets me to switch from Mazda to Honda. My 2015 CX-5 is aging well but it's now feeling a bit outdated. I'm happy to see carmakers returning to a more angular design on their crossovers. The melted plastic blob design style of most recent models never looked good to me. I'll have to test drive the Honda first though, I've tried a Nissan Rogue with CVT and was it a miserable experience for me. We'll see.
Honda CR-V has more plane and bigger interior but Mazda CX-5 is more luxurious inside so my verdict - just buy CX-9 and get everything you need in one cover for 40K.
Lookong at the numbers, a cx5 turbo is a second faster than a hybrid crv....no exactly a big deal. Im going to test both for handling and real world fuel economy. Hoping the CRV handles close to the cx5 as I'd like to move away from 4cylinder turbos, especially since driving one past 100k requires maintenance and potential repairs no common to hybrids.
If you're going to present the best, you should include the RAV4 and the Rogue. As for this particular comparison, the Honda has a theft problem and the CX-5 has a cramped rear seat and narrow small trunk problem. These two problems make this a non starter for many families. In my view it then becomes about the RAV4 vs the Rogue. I guess the VW what's-that-model-again should be included also. Outlander is a no go, because fuel consumption is less than stellar, and the PHEV is stupid expensive. What else... we're talking "best" here.. so yeah, the Escape doesn't get to play.
I really wanted to see RV but since they don't offer the HUD or ventilated seats the Mazda cx5 was a better choice for me. Now if honda changes these things on the crv I'd be down for buying one
Cx-5 Signature is such a pleasure to drive. Lot as of power, great handling, premium feel and of course, a real 6 speed transmission tuned to perfection
The Mazda CX-5 is the perfect blend of style and performance. This video captures its essence beautifully!
6:18 The Mazda has higher quality speakers from Bose while Honda uses one of their cheaper lines. They aren't the same
Agreed. Honda has some of the worst car speakers in the industry
Honda uses cheap everything
Very well said. I just purchased the 2023 Mazda CX5 Akera Turbo.
Exactly. I have Mazda 3 and I am very suttisfied with it.
Great choice. All of those other vehicles you were considering are junk.
So in your opinion mazda CX5 better than Honda ZRV ?
For your info. The prices are
MaZda CX5: 100,000 SAR (Full)
Honda ZRV: 127,000 SAR (Standard 2024)
Crv is more valuable now as it is the around town beater, keeps mileage down on the cx-5
Ed c
I think that both of these are great options, but I prefer the CX-5 over the CR-V. The Mazda just offers more luxurious features and is better on the road.
Nah. It’s not that luxury 😂 the actual reason you pick CX5 is CRV wheel got stolen like no tomorrow 😂😂😂
@@noobwow2009 what a ridiculous statement. The CX-5 is miles ahead in terms of driving capability, styling, interior design and features.
@@noobwow2009 Oh it's not just the wheels that get stolen. The entire CR-V gets stolen. Near the top of the list of all stolen cars.

@@sunitjoshi3573i have a 21 n/a awd and average 28.5 mpgs. Very even mix of highway and city driving for me.
Cx5 is my choice, I’m a single 28 year old, it’s just my mom and I at home and she needs a high vehicle due to her hip prosthesis, we don’t need the extra space, we own a cx5 and we are more than satisfied and very happy with it. No issues at all.
That’s basically my whole scenario. I’m 25 lol
This is me as well, I’m a single 29 year old and it’s mum and I at home, she was used to a lower vehicle as she has an i30 but she drives a lot less now due to a broken toe that happened in December last year and then a torn hamstring in Feb so I drive a lot more now. She’s taken a little time getting used to getting in and out of a higher vehicle like mine but now she loves it,
I’ve got a 2022 Akera Turbo (Turbo Signature in the US) and I love it to bits, still running in the engine and the efficiency on the highway is insane here in Australia, I’m getting average about 6.5L/100km on highways (approx 36mpg) and about 9.5L/100km in city (approx 24.75mpg), my combined is about 8.7L/100km (approx 27mpg) I’ve only done about 5000km in the 6 months I’ve had it so the engine isn’t run in fully either.
Good choice, for the same price you’re getting a much more powerful and refined engine. Better drivetrain, better chassis and suspension.
Honda offers a premium CRV its called the RDX.
The CX5 is to the BMW X1 what the CRV is to the CX5.
The CX5 is for tiny people who are 4-5ft tall max. Honda is better suited for more cargo and taller people. It's a fact.

@@Antiorganizer I’ve sat in a Mazda CX5 along with two other passengers and didn’t find the seating cramped.

Honda is proven brand and great resale value, reliability and safety. CRV is my choice
That is a great comment, I was thinking specifically about that! thank you truly

Me CX5 and wife CRV and every time she was using mine she came back to me saying "can i have the CX5 has my daily for a while?"
She is not a car person and all she want is to get from A to B.
Thank you! We appreciate the kind words!
Totally disagree with the family statement. We expand the family a few years ago and i can assure you have plenty of space for everything. Has the kid get older you will get back more space simply by not having to carry with you the foldable crib, stroller, diapers bag etc.

Love everything about the CX-5 and CX-50 over the CR-V; EXCEPT, no hybrid option for Mazda. Hopefully, the hybrid tech from the CX-90 will make it down to the lower Mazda models.
The CX50 is going to get the hybrid motor from the RAV4. They're built in the same factory in Alabama.
The CX-5 is a class above the CR-V and is leaps and bounds better.
I have the '22 cx5 carbon edition and compared to driving my moms crv, it's night and day. I'm so happy I went with the mazda.
In Canada I waited 4 months for a cx5.. Though Toyota is 12+ month wait here. But Mazda feels more premium for sure compared to the rest. I can't believe how quieting is.

So, for us, the CR-V hybrid is our vehicle hands down
You don't have to use premium gas with the CX-5. It just gets 10% more horsepower if you do
Good info. What is your MPG with the hybrid? Did you have to wait long for delivery?
The MPG figures for the crv are kinda misleading according to so many people on the internet. Its closer to 30 MPG if you mainly commute through highway
Why did you give Honda the point for touch screen? Premium brands are moving away from that.
And Mazda is a premium brand 😄
I’m running the CRV since one month and i really love it ❤ Great car. MX5 is also good but a little bit too small for our 4 guys family 😊

I'm deciding between these two at the moment. All it came down was if I wanted a family and fuel friendly efficient SUV or the performance vehicle.
I would go with the Mazda CX5. The interior and performance is a winner for me.
I luv the Mazda too and have had an MPV years back but I’ve always been Honda 1st. Bought a 2023 Exl for my wife and she loves the car.
What kind of mileage are you getting?
I would buy the cx-5 because it has a regular transmission while the 0:22 crv has a cvt trans which is still not proven to be reliable yet.
Hyundai has a very smooth 8 speed. You can't feel it shifting at all ever, but yeah, Mazda's transmission is almost as good with only 6 gears
Is the 2023 model still a good buy?
I own a 2016 and a 2021 cx5. Non turbo. They handle so well
Have you any problems with them? Anything I should keep an eye on? I just picked up a 2023 GT.
Best review strategies used here. Well done.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Base version comparisons would be awesome. Literally no options base version comparison.
Excellent comparison as always, these are both amazing vehicles!
Mazda cx5 looks more expensive inside and out! Honda sell way more than mazda its becuase most car buyers still think honda is more reliable than mazda!
Honda is also much more practical which is what people look for when shopping for an SUV.
Yeah I don’t trust that 1.5 punny turbo engine so many peeps complain about the oil dilution and blown head gaskets.
@@tommy13965 the hybrid doesn't have a turbo.
Wireless car play is worth a one. The extra storage and back seats is when CRV pulls ahead
Mazda's premium quality interior sold me
I bought CRV 2023 last week and I am not happy with the drive..Acceleration is too noisy...I regret buying it.
Yes the rear seats recline more in the Honda but no mention of Mazda’s 40-20-40 practical set up.
The acceleration noise in the CRV was noticeable and I would attribute it to the CVT
I have driven 2017 crv touring, it drones too much, that reduces the feel😢
definitely CX 5, i ve got CX 5 2017 2,2 Diesel Black edition, nice drive and cool.
It seems that those who prefer the CRV do so by describing mini-van attributes. Why not just get a mini-van?
I have a mini van and the CX5...great combo.
The road noise issue of the crv is disappointing. I hope you guys are able to do that retest soon.
Its not an issue, just with the road they were on. I test drove it recently and its really quiet inside on the highway.
@@mbenton6 i own a 23 CRV EXL, its actually very quiet compared to the last gen, i ve no idea what are you talking about
@azzdesigner yes definitely more quite then previous gen but not like mazda
My previous CR-V drove over 300,000 miles, died on transmission. The second 2023 Hybrid is running great! Just a personal favor.
What year was older Crv?
@@kevtn8 2005
I own a 2024 CX5. Both are Good Vehicles. 😮😊
Should also give the CRV an extra 0.5 since it has a better crash test rating.
I think America Honda CRV needs update, because in Asia it have 360 camera, Sun Roof, Rear LED turn signal, sliding front signal, Full 10.2inch Speed meter,Brown seats and more
Really?
@@zphre7548 yep!
The Mazda is better. Feels a lot more premium and looks better than the Honda, despite the the Honda being newer
Love it
Got my first Mazda, 2023 CX5 Carbon and freaking love it
Thanks for the detailed comp.
CRV because of the gas. Sure do wish it had the power of the Mazda though.
What kind of mileage are you getting?
I’m really surprised about the differences between the US and European versions, it is like we’re talking totally different cars here !! The newest Mazda is actually the CX-60, with 327hp hybrid, and quite more expensive than the CRV, also hybrid. Mazda has NEVER delivered a turbo-engine in EU, while Honda did (the one you’re testing there, I guess) but now delivers only hybrid drivetrains in the 2023 CRV…. which we are waiting for until autumn, by the way.
On topic then:
1) most importantly, in the EU the Mazda does not come with a 200-plus hp engine.
Correct... Europe and Asia have a different version
We now have ordered a CRV sport touring which was chosen for its exterior style, hybrid drive train and rear storage capacity,
What's your average mpg in highway and city drive? Is there a big difference in cabin quietness between Mazda and Honda? Thanks
It looks like they put the rectangular chrome exhaust tips on the front bumper of the CRV
Anyone else see a green flash at 15:44?
Cx 90 is coming to take over the mid-size suv segment
Wait for the CX-7 and you may change your mind. I am waiting on the CX-5 with a Hybrid (possibly Toyota's)
I like the CRV better but the pricing is ridiculous, I will be going for the mazda instead. If I get to afford a Honda I will probably be going for a more luxurious brand.
The price is still a lot more for a luxury brand though.
@@carapapenfuss2663 probably but I wouldn’t pay that much for a Honda, ain’t no way.
We'll see.
I agree. That’s how they messed you the Jeep Cherokee
Wonder if it would make sense to compare the non turbo Mazda maybe a mid grade trim vs mid grade CRV, nonetheless great video!
How about the drivers right knee room in the CX-5 and middle armrest not large enough to support the right arm and hold the wheel in the CX-5?
Honda has less available units currently and many of the dealers are adding at least 3k in markups. . .
The Honda crv also has rear heated seats, idk if’s in only Canada
Honda CR-V has more plane and bigger interior but Mazda CX-5 is more luxurious inside so my verdict - just buy CX-9 and get everything you need in one cover for 40K.
Lookong at the numbers, a cx5 turbo is a second faster than a hybrid crv....no exactly a big deal.
Im going to test both for handling and real world fuel economy. Hoping the CRV handles close to the cx5 as I'd like to move away from 4cylinder turbos, especially since driving one past 100k requires maintenance and potential repairs no common to hybrids.
I love how the Mazda handles but the cargo space was a deal breaker for me.
I go with the Cr v
If you're going to present the best, you should include the RAV4 and the Rogue.
As for this particular comparison, the Honda has a theft problem and the CX-5 has a cramped rear seat and narrow small trunk problem.
These two problems make this a non starter for many families. In my view it then becomes about the RAV4 vs the Rogue.
I guess the VW what's-that-model-again should be included also.
Outlander is a no go, because fuel consumption is less than stellar, and the PHEV is stupid expensive.
What else... we're talking "best" here.. so yeah, the Escape doesn't get to play.
What do you think of the Kia sorento? I know they are also having a major theft issue..or even the Hyundai Tucson?
@@erasak They both have reliability problems. However their warranties are rather long.
I really wanted to see RV but since they don't offer the HUD or ventilated seats the Mazda cx5 was a better choice for me. Now if honda changes these things on the crv I'd be down for buying one
