I'd get the CX-5 because it's built in Japan and has a better rear suspension and a smoother, quieter ride. The CX-50 may be longer and wider, but it's also lower. Not a good thing if you're taller or older.

I am tall and old. I have no problem whatsoever with my CX50 resulting from either condition. The torsion bar suspension on the CX50 was originally designed and utilized on tanks. It is noted for having greater reliability than an independent rear suspension. The CX50 is not made in Japan, but is made at a factory that is a collaborative partnership with Toyota. Toyota has been making cars in the U.S. for decades. Same for Honda and Subaru. Any notion that Japanese cars made in the U.S. are inferior is pure myth.

My new 2024 and fourth CX5 is due to arrive any day now. We did test drive CX50 BUT found it to be less slick than the 5. Being our fourth purchase, we know the 5 rides well, is dependable with miminal maintenance costs. Our first CX5, 2015, belongs to our son and is well over 220,000 rough driveb miles. He just took ownership of the 2021 model. Our daughter has the 2017. We love the CX5!❤❤❤

I’d choose it over the CX-50 because I like the independent suspension setup and the fact that it’s made in Japan.

I just purchased a 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium after seeing it parked next to a CX-5 at the dealership. The CX- 50 just
looked way better. The description my wife used was athletic.
Concerning the headroom and middle seat seam issue as mentioned by some reviewers:
I am 6’ 6” and there is absolutely no problem with head room. Also, I just got back from a 800 mile tour into the mountains of Tennessee and NC and the middle seam on seats is a definite non issue for me.

Bought a CX-5 Turbo in May of this year and have loved it! I drove German cars for the previous 5 years or so, and they can't hold a candle to the quality and build of the CX-5. Premium feeling, excellent drive even at high elevation (I'm in SLC), and amazing features for the price (like cooled seats, premium sound system, etc.). After hundreds of hours of research, it's where I landed and couldn't be happier. Best car under $40k hands down.

I am beginning to have second thoughts now-- because I want to keep the CX-5. Absolutely love the packaging, looks, and cabin feel. It is nicely buttoned down-- transmission works well with the naturally aspirated 2.5L I4. Power is more than adequate for our purposes.

I will probably be downvoted, but EVs are ugh. As much as I want to say the "green" movement was right, it hasn't offered much availability in long car rides. Literally can gas up a car in less than 5 mins. For EVs, I have heard the fastest recharge rate is around 10 mins, which is "fine" if you don't mind waiting. On top of that, sourcing parts for a lithium battery is a nightmare. My current car is a plugin hybrid, had to wait 8 months on a replacement battery, which is unacceptable. That service center said two of their clients have been waiting a year and a half on their EV batteries. If you do go with something that is more "green" movement friendly, i would recommend a regular hybrid car. But this is all my personal experiences, I am sure other people will say they are great and life changing, but EVs are still fairly new except for Tesla. Tesla's have been having issues left and right with their cars in terms of longevity.

Honestly I think the CX-50 has more potential. Young adults prefer versatility. Whether it’s a drive in the city, or riding the back roads for a camping trip. The design of the CX-50 is both classy and rugged. It’s a good balance. Also younger buyers love longevity. They want to buy a car, and keep it for 10-15+ years that will last and handle all circumstances. CX-50 will definitely be an upcoming model that will compete with Toyota and Honda.

Test drove both yesterday - I wish they used the same suspension on the CX-50 - it just doesn’t drive as nice. The pick up on the CX-5 is also noticeably better. The interior is also more comfortable on the 5, but does feel dated compared to the 50 with the pano sunroof. Reliability wise, having owned a 5 and a 9, I lean towards the 5 being produced in Japan and having a longer track record.

Both are great! I had a Cx 5 GT turbo for 4 years. It’s a great car. We just got a cx-50 GT fully loaded and man... It is awesome. Larger backseats, bigger trunk( cx-5 is deeper) . The 2014 model had a suspension upgrade. It’s a bit less bumpy than the cx-5 in the city( my wife loved). The only cons about the cx-50 . The Apple car and dashboard are pretty buggy. Wireless charging doesn’t work properly sometimes . In the other hand, the cx5 is more stable but more laggy. Overall are great cars with good drive handling.

Exact same case for us - 2020 GT Turbo CX-5 to fully loaded 2024 GT Turbo CX-50. I definitely prefer the CX-50 in all aspects except I find the build quality not as good (one door lock is a bit noisy, doors don't sound as good when closing, steering wheel feels slightly cheaper). Looking at it and driving it I prefer the CX-50 by far. During the 4 years we had the CX-5 we had not ONE issue. Never opened the hood on it once except to refill wiper fluid.

No matter which one you choose they drive so nice. Both have a rougher ride than some competitors but changed my tires on my cx50 after 28k and much softer ride now. Main deciding factor for me going with the cx50 was simply more comfortable for me. Arm rest on the cx5 is small and really do not like the location of cup holders. Trunk has more usable space due to its shape. Again, very personal though.

Currently shopping for a '25 CX-5 non-turbo, as I believe the turbo would be a waste of money due to poorer fuel economy PLUS the need to run 93 octane in order to take advantage of the turbo. I came from a CX9 and downsized to a CX-50. From my perspective, I couldn't deal with the short stubby armrest on the CX5, especially for a long drive. The longer arm rest with the cup holders positioned more forward in the cabin makes the CX50 a far more comfortable ride, even with the firmer seating.

Good video! I wish you would have used different metrics for rear leg room and rear cargo area. Mazda's measurements should make the CX-5's rear seats one of the roomiest in the segment, but the reality is that CX-5 has some of the least roomy back seats. I'm not sure how they measured it, but it can't be right. We have two CX-5s in the household, one of which replaced an older CX-5, but all are the current generation. It's immediately apparent when you get into the back of the CX-50 that its back seats have more legroom. The cargo area measurements are also questionable when it comes to usability. The CX-5 has more cargo space on paper because of its higher roof, which is great if you stack cargo all the way up to the ceiling. But CX-50 has a large advantage in length of the cargo area, which most people would find more usable. I don’t know how many times I've had to fold the CX-5's rear seats down because I needed an extra 4-5 inches of space, which wouldn't be necessary in the CX-50.

They need to do the road/sound test on the exact same stretch of road and at around 75 miles an hour. I understand that it's not always possible, but the type of road surface significantly impacts results. Still a good test and I'm glad they do try and take it into consideration when most reviewers skip of this part. And everyone who's owned a car for a longer duration knows that road/wind noise can really be a deal breaker.

We have a 2016.5 model of the CX5 and have loved it. I bought it for my wife and both of us have never been happier with the purchase. From what I have read the new models are just as reliable as the one we have. That is something to also consider when buying a new car. My almost eight year old Mazda has had absolutely no issues, at all, during the time we have owner her.
My only major complaint with the CX5 was the relative lack of power compared to V6 SUVs in the same category. The Turbo model seems to fix that and it may be as quick as my 2019 GLI now. If it was a vehicle for me I'd probably go with the CX50 but for my wife I am guessing the ride will be a bit better on bigger wheels and the overall setup of the CX5 will be better. The nice thing is that it probably won't be a real step down.
We are planning to replace ol faithful next year. The CX5 is right at the top now and I haven't seen a vehicle yet that would replace it.

Nice review. I would not given .5 to CX-5 for larger cargo space. Technically it is larger but only due to height which is most usually not helpful. I prefer the wider and more practical width of the CX-50 cargo space.
And grading the spare tire access as a point of contention seems excessive...
Other words, I think it would be a tie. At least by your comparisons.
I would add origin country. CX-5 is MIJ meanwhile CX-50 is MIA (albeit with a Toyota partnership). That gives CX-5 at least 1 point higher than CX-50.

  • @classiccorvettesmusclecars5846

The downfall is the CX50 turbo has awful annoying stop/start and now the base engine 24 CX5 has it. At least it’s not across the board. Build quality will always b better in Japan.

I don’t understand why Mazda made two different models of this similar styled SUV. They could have easily incorporated the looks by adding more features to differentiate the two, similar to what other brands do.

Yeah, it seems like CX-50 could have been a "trim" instead of a model, if they weren't built on different platforms. But surely they could have put different grilles and fenders (or even just different fender cladding), wheels and possibly some suspension tweaks, then a couple other features on the interior to make something more "rugged".

I cannot believe that you gave .5 pts to the CX 50 for its wide screen moon roof when the portion of the moon roof over the rear seats does not open at all. The CX 5's moon roof covers the front seat passengers. It just doesn't cover the rear seats with an immovable piece of glass; which serves no purpose other than making rear passengers hot and uncomfortable from the greenhouse effect.

    • @BrandonG8Man
      @BrandonG8Man Рік тому +5

You do realize that no panoramic roof actually opens over the rear seat right? They are all about bringing additional light into the cabin. If the rear seat passengers don’t want the light/heat then the shade can be opened over the front seat passengers only which keeps the rear passengers in the shade/dark.

I prefer the look of the cx 50 plastic trim but as a 9 year owner of cx5, my trim faded right away and has been a problem with keeping it looking new despite multiple detailing treatments. I'd rather not go through that again with even more plastic on the 50! so not sure which to buy! My 2016 CX5 Grand Touring (top model) has been a great car. I'm probably going to stay Mazda but I feel like I'll get bored staying in the same model for 18 years, so I'm looking at the CX50 which I like the looks of better. Test drove the new 70 and the only good one was the plug-in hybrid, the other 2 engines were slow. The Turbo edition of the 50 was good but way worse gas mileage. The supposedly standard roof rack was crazy loud!!!! Even the dealer didn't know what was causing so much noise!

the cx-5 is made in japan while the cx-50 is made in the USA well I should say assembled, also it doesnt make sense that the cx-50 is more expensive in all trims, since the cx-5 has to be loaded on a ship and shipped to the USA while the cx-50 is made in the usa

The one aspect that killed the cx-50 for me. At highway speeds, the noise was CONSIDERABLY louder than the cx-5. That is fatiguing on long drives. The cx-5 is a better daily (road) driver experience, by far. the cx-50 OTOH, is better offroad and much more refined than the competition.

I can't decide to be honest. Personally I think they are BOTH behind the curve when it comes to MPG. They should have had a CX-5 hybrid and a CX-50 hybrid by now with MPG of at least 35 t 40 mpg to compete with Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and Honda CRV Hybrid.
