    I have a 2016 CX-5, and I absolutely love this vehicle. Absolutely the best trouble-free vehicle I have ever owned. Just reached 100k miles without any issues. 5k oil changes, transmission fluid change and just recently replaced the coolant. That is it folks. Hats off to the Mazda engineers! Zoom Zoom!

      I have a 2020 CX-9 and a 2021 Mazda 6. I love both of them, especially the 6. I got the 6 after being impressed so much with the CX-9. After owning Toyotas and Hondas, Mazdas just seem better screwed together, a bit higher quality and for sure more engaging to drive.

    I love my 2016 Touring CX-5. Bought it brand new, paid in full, and I've had absolutely zero problems with it in over 8 years thus far. Easily the best car I've ever owned. I get synthetic oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles strictly on the dot. I do my own annual maintenance like swap out the 3 wiper blade inserts and 2 air filters annually. Also changed out the battery once on my own with a Costco Interstate. Batteries these days will last you only 3-4 years, so be proactive and change them out before you get any trouble. So easy to DIY maintain this vehicle! I have the FWD non-turbo with sunroof/Bose stereo package. Still running smooth on original brakes and my original Yokohama Geoloanders with no problem. I average 30mpg highway! I have sonic silver and it still looks showroom new after all these years. I run it monthly through a touchless wash. I plan to keep this car FOREVER with the way things are going.

    Just bought a 2023 CX-5 Premium for my wife, and I'm loving it.. As a Mechanical Engineer, I love the top notch quality without useless over-engineering and Mazda is the king of this .. This is my 3rd new mazda I've purchased in a row. I still have my 2011 mazda 3 with 185k miles, (my daily driver), and my wife's old 2012 Mazda 5 with 130k miles.. Both of these cars have been flawless, neither of them ever having a mechanical failure in their combined 315k miles of driving.. I simply change fluids, filters etc on schedule, and they just keep running.. Heck my Mazda 3 still has the original brakes on it...crazy stuff..

    I bought my 2023 cx5 premium after my 97 corolla died beyond reasonable repair last month.. I never imagined myself getting a Mazda, as I've been dead-set on buying a Rav4 for MANY years when my car died. I was ABSOLUTELY blown away when I did my test drive at how much more refined the cx5 was than the rav4. Plus, the dealership had plenty of new inventory in stock, which was actually cheaper than buying even a 2018 Rav4 with 35,000 miles....... No regrets on the car. Love it

      I tested the '22 CX-5 and in terms of driving feel and engine responsiveness, it absolutely blew away the RAV4. Stepping on the gas pedal in the '22 RAV4 made you feel like there's an artificial bit of lag between when your foot presses down and when the car decides to give you power, and this was just in 1st gear without any up or down shifting happening.
      The CX-5 also handled quite a bit better around the corners and on the road, which is noticeable even in normal driving.
      The CX-5 is also made in Japan, so you got that J VIN build quality and fit/finish too.

    • @elusivellama
      @elusivellama Рік тому +7

      You should see the Palisade review that he did recently. Given that it's a Hyundai, it's not surprising how poorly engineered and old it really is under the hood.
      For example, it's still using the Lambda II 3.8L V6, more or less the same design made since 2005. It doesn't even have hydraulic lifters, and it has a plastic oil filter housing! While plastic and engine oil isn't necessarily a bad combo, it's all too easy to destroy the housing if it is improperly removed or tightened.
      Go watch that video, it's a real eye opener, you'll never want a Hyundai lmao

    Mazda, as a small automaker, is smart for taking something solid & then constantly tweaking it for an extended period of time, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every 4-5 years with a completely new model version. They also use the same basic engine/drivetrain/etc. across all their model lines. That is essentially how Toyota originally gained their (now outdated) reputation for quality (sticking to certain proven tech for longer periods of time). I finally switched to Mazda in 2022, after a pretty dismal 2020 model year Toyota ownership experience.

    Thank you for this video. I have been a Toyota customer for over 30 years. Recently my 4Runner had to go after 20 years due to frame rust and hydraulic failure. Went to the dealer to buy a replacement, looking at a change to a smaller SUV, in this case the RAV4. I did not like the gasoline only model because of lack of power and very noisy. They had absolutely no stock of any vehicles on their lot. This was the same with every dealership for all of eastern Ontario. I ordered a RAV4 Hybrid but would not get delivery until December 2024. Well. I needed a vehicle right now and Toyota was selling their used RAV4, Camry, and other cars in some cases over $5,00.00 over the price of a new one. That when I started to look at other vehicle and came to find Mazda had new stock on hand. Did a lot of research of the company and vehicles, including this fantastic video from the car nut guy, that I’ve followed for years now. When you listen to him, a previous Toyota master technician, he knows a lot about all cars. Anyway, I made the plunge and bough5 myself a 2023 Mazda Signature Turbo in June that is Made in Japan, awesome quality, RAV4 Limited Hybrid I ordered doesn’t even come close. Needless to say, I cancelled the RAV4. In conclusion, I am now a Mazda customer with absolutely no regrets. If you need a vehicle, check out Mazda. You will be amazed at the quality, reliability and performance of their vehicles.

And most mazada are now using same engineering and similar parts as Toyota, and they are built in same plants as Toyota. The new 6 sp dual clutch transmission (not a cvt) is being used every where beats a toyota cvt.

    One of the best review I ever watched online.
    Why?
    Because this guy who wears this classic coverall of a car mechanic seems like a guy you can really trust. And off course, he really knows what he is talking about.
    Simplicity of this eingine and transmission is the best thing about this car and that is exactly what the guy pointed out. Many people would say it is slow because it is 2,5L eingine with "only" 194 bhp and no turbo. But those are the people that don't have idea that if you take small egine and put turbo or 2 or 3 turbos in it, it will have a much bigger pressure in the engine and will release bigger temperature. All fo these things will lead to comlications and mailfunctions in the future. That is why Mazda keeps it plain and simple. A car that looks great, feels great, has enough power for a great passenger car and is built to last.
    And I totaly agree about the electronic hatch. People are proud when they can open the trunk with a single button and they are trying to impress others by doing that. What they don't understand that all this kind of electronic features will break some day and when they do, it won't be simple and cheap to repair.
    Once agan, great review. Great to see someone who really know what and why is he talking about.

    Nice review. I'm on my third Mazda (all leased), and second CX-5. My first Mazda was a 2016 Mazda3 hatchback Touring 2.0. Great little car, excellent fuel economy. Only thing was that it wasn't great if the streets weren't properly plowed of snow (Long Island, NY). So in 2018 I traded up to a 2018 CX-5 AWD Touring (non-turbo). In 2020 I went to a 2020 CX-5 FWD (in Florida no snow, so no need for AWD) Touring (again non-turbo). I find that the base 2.5 has more than enough power for me. When I need to accelerate quickly I just mash the gas pedal down and it takes off like a rocket, in normal mode (not even sport mode). It handles great, excellent brakes, and is reliable. Mine all have the display being touch screen, but only at stop or very slow speeds (I believe up to 10 mph). Above that you have to use the knob. Personally I think that touch screens in moving cars is just as dumb as using a hand held cell phone.
    Now I'm looking at the CX-50, because I like that it has a longer and wider cargo area than the CX-5. Again, non-turbo. I also don't like the Bose system because the subwoofer sits in the middle of the spare, which is where I like to keep my jumper cables. Also, on the subject of spare tires, Mazda including spare tires is one of the reasons I went with Mazda back in 2016. At the time I got the Mazda3 I was also considering comparable models from Kia and Hyundai. But they didn't come with a spare, plus they were about to be replaced with new versions for 2017, so I went with Mazda3. I'm glad I did, because a year later when driving I hit a monster pothole, which had claimed about a dozen other cars that morning. It cracked the right front alloy wheel, causing a loss of air. If I didn't have the spare I would have needed to be towed, but because I had the spare, I was able to drive the car to the dealer to check what other damage had been caused by the impact with the pothole (fortunately none). Just had to replace the wheel and get an alignment.

    My 5 years review on the 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring;
    When I first looked at the CX-5 reviews EVERYONE compared it to other mid sized SUVs all said the all the other SUV's won b/c the others had a few extra sq feet on internally space, why is that a win? Had mine since 2018, & ZOOM ZOOM! Very happy, only way I'd be happier is if I had the turbo model, mine is the 2017 CX-5, no turbo, but did get it for a few thousands off the KBB price for a low end model, but the Jeep Dealership didn't know what they had, it was the full loaded Grand Touring, with additional extra optional packages installed. If you know the features, & know how to spot them in a photo, you can get a great deal buying used if they have it posted as a lesser model, this is how I got my deal.
    The sun roof feels like it belongs in a car from the late 1980s, & if I put something on the passenger seat over 15 lbs. the damn seat belt warning will beep w/ no way to turn it off.
    All four leather seats are heated, but I think it is only for the butt, not the lower back, something I loved in my last car. Been thinking if possible getting lower back heat added & seat air conditioning. btw, with two dogs, the white leather seats look brand new, dogs haven't left a mark on the white leather after 5 years.
    But I do love how it handles around turns, the CX-5 is able to take a turn very fast for any vehicle b/c of Mazda's wheel control, that super fasts applies breaking and or speed to remove almost 100% of any car tilt or roll (you do not even know it is doing it), it is something you have to try for yourself, if you own a CX-5, or test drive one, try a 90 degree sharp turn at 35, 40 miles per hour (good tires, dry road) you'll see a car tilt only seen in very stiff sports cars, & do not do it with a car full of groceries, or if you have small children or pets, or open beverages in the vehicle because centrifugal force is still a thing, but highly recommended if your girlfriend or wife is applying lipstick! ... only do it to your wife if you have a nice sofa to sleep on.
    And when you try the fast sharp turn, make sure there are no wet leaves, this is how I totaled my Alpha Romeo by snapping off both right side wheels off when I slide into a curb & kept sliding 30 feet over boulders, (lucky I didn't flip) did 6+ grand of damage to a 2.5 grand car, strange thing, I hit a huge patch of wet leaves & there wasn't a tree in site in any direction as far as I could see.

    After test driving and researching the major Japanese brands and Korean names , i chose the CX 5 as my first non German car ! One reason or the major reason was 1) how simple the car is non gimmicky things here and there , its pretty much as old school as you could get in 2021. I chose the second model from the bottom (Touring) mainly bec it doesnt have leather ( it cooks and dries in Florida) . It also had the lowest insurance cost among other similar small SUVsand according to IIHS super tough crash 40 MPH offset testing it was the only model to pass with a Good Rating . And the transmission has a diostick ! Cant find that anymore. Ive done 2 long 1200 miles each (5 plus hours behind the wheel) , super comfortable seats ! In comparison my 5 series BMW feels like your sitting on concrete slabs after 2 hours . Ive driven it fast ( over 100mph ) and feels solid even zig zagged at that speed and felt reassured ..no wobbling uneasy feeling. Gripes !!? Very few 1) smallish gas tank for highway travel range is 320 or so miles a couple more gallons would help the range anxiety, 2) Plastic thermostat housing ….3) I would have liked to see more aluminum in the suspension control arms ( for longevity. )
    The dealership expeerience has been excellent in Miami ( the Rudeness capital of the US ) in comparison the upscale BMW dealer always makes u feel as if youre asking for a free favor. Sinve ive owned german cars all my life, when I bought the Mazda ( new) i immediately bought extra oil and coolant - because i dont leave home without that on my BMWs ….never had to use that on my Mazda ..

    My first Mazda was a 2007 Mazda 3 Sedan with a standard manual transmission. Loved that car. I decided to trade it off for my 2021 Mazda CX-5 and got it with the naturally asperated engine (no-turbo). Love this ride. Like the featured one in this video, it has all the bells and whistles with heated front and rear leatherette seats, cooled front seats, and heated steering wheel. This vehicle is a confident ride in the Minnesota winters, even with the OEM installed Toyo tires, like the ones in the video.
    What I absolutely love about Mazda's is that a well maintained Mazda likely won't have any major problems. My Mazda 3 with standard manual transmission, I put a new clutch in after 150,000 miles. Drive train wise, the Mazda 3 I had was rock solid. I did need to replace shocks and struts a couple of control arms and a CV axil after 10+years and over 100k miles, and word of advice, buy Mazda OEM parts. My Mazda 3 only became a money pit after the mechanics I had hired for repairs put crap O'Rielly or Napa aftermarket parts in it, and they failed six months after installation, conveniently outside of their warranty period, when the orginal Mazda parts went for over a decade and 100,000 miles before needing replacement. The aftermarket brake pads and rotors that were installed after market were junk too, they produced a ton of dust. Pay any extra money for the Mazda OEM parts, they are worth every penny. I am confident had I installed Mazda OEM shocks, struts, control arms, brake pads and rotors, I would still be driving that Mazda 3 another 150k.
    And so long as Mazda keeps producing excellent vehicles like Mazda 3 and the CX-5, I am a Mazda customer for life. The only real complaint I have about the Mazda 3 is that the back seat is kind of cramped for adults. If I were to consider a Sedan again, I would likely go with a Toyota Camry. I rode in the back seat of a Camera driven by an Uber driver, and I as a 5'11" 300lb guy at the time fit back there comfortably with plenty of leg room. I have lost some weight, but the leg room of the Camry is far superior to that of the Mazda 3.

With this review you proved yet again that you are a car guy and you can tell a good car when you see one, no matter the brand. When two years ago I came face to face with the sad reality of having to replace my beloved SVT Focus, the Mazda CX-5 was one of the considerations. Cool looks and premium feeling interior did seem attractive, and above all was the fact that this is the best handling car in its class. Unfortunately, I chickened out and let my rational side make the decision. Not having driven one or having a particular option on it, I decided to get the RAV4, hoping that it will live up to the company reputation of reliability.AND, for fairness sake I have to admit that this was at the peak of chip shortage and there were waiting lists for new cars. So, wasn’t too much of a choice (and it’s not like I’m complaining about my RAV4). It’s just that we both would agree as to which of the two is the better driver’s car…

    I bought this high spec turbo model a few months ago. I agree with your observation about the A pillars, I find myself at times having to look around them.
    I disagree completely with your criticism of the heads up display, it’s not a gimmick at all, nor is it ancient, it’s a great driving aid, it’s exceptionally clear to read and provides plenty of information. It’s also is very customisable and adjustable.
    My only interior criticisms would be the seats are too hard so need seat cushions, which defeats the seat heating and ventilation feature. The A pillars as mentioned, gloss black plastic.
    Exterior criticisms would be the overall durability of the finishes. Paint is only very average so get a good wax on it immediately or a ceramic coating, chrome window trims are very soft and scratch too easily, and that gloss black door pillar plastic is horribly soft. Be prepared to get those covered in protective film straight away or you will shed tears at the accumulation of scratches on that stuff.
    As far as driving it, it’s very good, lots of zoom zoom, not a luxury ride by any means but more of a sporty SUV ride, the auto is a bit basic but I’m told it’s adaptive so it may need a few thousand kilometres to show improvement. It’s ok as it is though.

    Agree with transmission 100%! Toyota tried this multi-disc clutch TC with their UA80, but the tuning was so poor.. The Toyota TC would unlock every time you took the foot off the gas, so every time you reapply throttle, it had this slushy, rubber-band sensation until locked again. The Mazda usually stays locked up until you slow down below 5mph. So glad I traded Sienna for CX-9.
    Another thing I really like about the Mazda transmission is how smooth it shifts into drive/reverse from park. It shifts instantly and with no shock/vibration at all, very satisfying. @Kevin Good to hear. I had some really bad bucking/pulsing under light throttle. I didn't own long enough to see if problem developed. I had a rental 2020 Camry though, and the tuning was different (didn't have the problem accelerating from a rolling stop that the van had), maybe works better with the four cyl.
      I do miss the highway fuel mileage of the Toyota transmission, but long term, the Mazda feels more like what Toyota used to feel like.

      @@markpowell6885 No I didn't but maybe I should have. My thought at the time was that the CX-9 was too big. I think the CX-9 is considered "full size" and I had my mind set on a compact SUV. I did see a new CX-50 at Costco the other day and was very impressed. A bit bigger than the CX-5. The front and rear of the vehicle look great. The interior looked impressive too from what I could see. If it had been around a year and a half ago when I got the RAV4, it probably would have been at the top of my list.

    The fact that they don't have the latest technology makes Mazda stand out for me. The cost to fix all the lastest tech in modern cars are nightmare to deal with.
    Mazda being still exclusively made in Japan, with the Japanese standard is a testament to how great they are. Unlike the modern, they have move away a little from the standards we got accustomed to.

    20:54 "No touch screen" THANK GOD! Those things turn gnarly after couple touches and got to keep on cleaning them continuously if you want them to look nice. There's also the usability side, I think it's so much more easier to operate the interface with physical buttons than poking the screen and taking your eyes off the road for longer than with physical buttons.

    I own a 2014 Mazda 6 with the 2.5 Skyatic powertrain. It has been an absolute dream to own. Zero issues in almost 9yrs and and 105k. It definitely feels a little down on power and MPG vs when it was new, so im sure it probably needs the valves cleaned but still plenty quick and the interior build quality has held up.....other than the well documented steering wheel cover of course.

    OK, car gurus, I am looking to replace my 2012 Honda Fit Sport with a similarly reliable car with naturally aspirated engine, no CVT, no turbo, nice interior, decent roominess, spare tire, great safety features like blind spot monitoring, no cylinder deactivation, no engine start/stop at stop signs, etc. I was so disappointed to find the 2024 Honda HRV is now CVT, so they lost a sure sale with that move. I’ll probably purchase the 2025 CX-5, so thanks for your review, and the many comments from owners of this gem of a car!!!! Best regards to everyone!

    First, I want to congratulate you on your successful channel. I love it! I promote it to my friends and family; this style of content (aside from whatever topic it covers) is meaningful and helpful. I have recently done a lot of research on cars; your channel is definitely one of the best for this. I appreciate your candor, expertise, and thoroughness. I am frustrated by too many "reviewers" that seem to do little more than recite from the manufacturer's brochure.
    Second, as a decades-long Toyota owner (Sienna, Corolla, Prius, and now a 2021 Venza) I have finally migrated to Mazda. I recently bought a CX5 (normally aspirated engine). I was reluctant to do this, initially, but your review convinced me that my initial instincts were correct --- in many aspects, the CX5 is superior to most Toyota offerings. Within its price segment, I would argue it's by far the best vehicle, overall.
    Third, I do want to offer my opinion on a couple of things where I disagree with you.
    (a) As far as the rotary dial, versus the touchscreen --- I was not a fan of this either, at first. However, after a month in this car, I find it very simple and intuitive to use. I appreciate that I don't have to lean forward to use a touchscreen (like I do in the Venza); my driving position stays relaxed and my eyes are forward. My hands can work without direct supervision! It took me a few weeks to "get it", yes, but I prefer this style of infotainment interaction while driving. It works well!
    (b) I think you (uncharacteristically) "glided by" the car's handling characteristics with just a few comments, mostly criticizing it for the way it performed on a crappy road. The CX5 handles INCREDIBLY; it reminds me of a sports car. I have driven it over all sorts of roads already; it always stays stable, and it inspires a lot of driver confidence. Maybe too much? LOL When I first started driving it regularly, I pushed this car harder into the curves than I probably should; it felt completely (and comfortably) in control. Yes, I'm certain that you're correct --- a "dippy" road, coupled with its short wheelbase, would make it hop a bit. But c'mon! That would be true of ANY car with a short wheelbase. Generally, on most roads, even uneven roads, this car handles MUCH better than most vehicles, especially vehicles in its price range and/or size segment. Sorry, but that has to be said.
    But other than those two things, this was another helpful and well-done video. Please keep it up! We don't need more sell-outs and marketeers, we need more truth and honest reviewers like yourself. God bless!

    I had a 2021 Mazda 3 as a rental for a month when my Camry got totaled. I fell in love with it. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the fact the screen was controlled by the dial in the middle and not a touch screen. Had great power considering it was non turbo great handling comfortable ride and most importantly it had a real transmission not a cvt. I specifically asked not to get a rental with a cvt since I can’t stand them even the ones in the new corollas. If I could afford one I would pick the Mazda 3 over the Corolla any day

    Thank you.
    The dashboard trim isn't fake. It's real wood; at least on the GTS.. It's often mistakenly reported to be genetically related to European Ash, but isn't.
    I have noticed the width of the pillar when driving, but I believe it was a deliberate choice to strengthen the frame.
    Their achievement in engineering such a high compression ratio was a tremendously interesting read, which I need to revise.
    Also, few catalytic convertors are stolen on a Mazda, the first one being by the exhaust manifold, under the bonnet (hood). They, too, very interestingly, use far fewer precious metals, because they dont 'Agglutinate', (to quote the manual) on the catalized material.
    The nappa leather seats are by far the most comfortable I've ever experienced; they are perfectly matched with the superb driving position.
    I do wish there was a button for automatically locking all the doors.
    ( I still !! want a cd player).
    Thanks for showing the underneath. Everyone should do that.

    A pleasant day, I'm contemplating on purchasing my 1st SUV which is based on my following criteria: a. Purpose;
    b. Budget & maintenance; c. Practicality d. Reliability & Durability. I have made a list of the possible motor vehicles:
    a. Hyundai Tucson; b. Kia Sportage;
    c. Mazda CX-5; d. Toyota RAV 4.
    I have a couple of vehicles and in my years of experience, Japan made vehicles are a tough. With the new companies, plus innovations & technology makes the choices a larger arena. That's why I keep a list to make it simpler. After watching your video with regard to Mazda CX 5, it gave me more insights. Thanks a lot and hoping you can make reviews of the vehicles I mentioned in my list, if I haven't seen them yet which you already made. Keep up the excellent work..cheers 🎉🥂🍾
