Harley-Davidson Engine, Is The Latest The Greatest

  • Is the Harley-Davidson Engine of late truly an upgrade over the Twin Cam? The Milwaukee 8 does have a lot of high points when compared to the Twin Cam 103, but also it's fair share of lows. There's a lot of knowledge out there on the Twin Cam and the M8 engine is catching up. You might find out on the road a lot of Indy shops may not stock a lot of M8 parts but have everything you could ever need for a twin cam. The latest Harley-Davidson engine no doubt makes some serious power but the Twin Cam engine can still run pretty close to it with the proper modifications. You for sure need to ride bikes powered by an M8 and a Twin Cam 103 and decide which engine you prefer.

I've test ridden all the new tourers since the Evo and every one of them just makes me feel that I already have one of these. If I wanted to drag race I would not be looking at a Harley so the increases in torque and horse power are meaningless. My 97 Evo Road King and I have been everywhere at least twice over the years. It's always given me everything I've wanted from a motorcycle and will be my last bike.

Now that I e been riding long enough I can say, when I started riding the twin cams just came out and everyone said the same bullshit about them that is being said about the m8……their not real Harley’s, they don’t sound like a Harley, their piles of shit, omg their cam chain guides are gonna blow up, now their beloved. Lmfao. And I remember hearing guys say they were told the same about the evo’s. And my bikes are both 88” twinkies so no hating here

  • @stretchpropertymaintenance2561

Let me say a twin cam 88 bored to 107 sounds better than m8 engine. Yes the m8 provides more numbers on the dyno. I have a twin cam that turns heads with good amount of torque in the saddle.

Exactly why if I finish my current project I might get a Harley for a second bike. But 600-800 lbs wet weight? Harley needs a strong lightweight setup and more hp out of the M8. I don’t have to have the quickest bike but I don’t want to have to play catch-up all the time.
EU5 hosing up new bikes with gadgetry, safer perhaps, a bit slower. But I personally find Hinckley Triumph triples to be an interesting foundation for a modern inexpensive but quick bike that’s not over stressed w/ a 12.5::1 compression ratio for example. Because why not? Cheap quick fun. It just seems like you need $$$ to get 150-170 hp on a heavy bike. Or put a little work into an older pre electronic nannies bike and start where M8s end. Sorry just a fact. No disrespect. I just prefer zoom over cruise, or something like that. Condemned to being a bad boy for life I guess lol.

the M8 isn't really a new engine anymore. it's been out since 2017. that was quite a while ago. most of these issues have been ironed out on the current models with very few to report. overall the M8 seems to be a proven reliable engine so long as you don't do any crazy modifications to it.

I’m new to riding, only two years, but I’ve only ridden Harleys. I started on an iron 883 and was going to trade up to a 2015 low rider dyna with the 103 HO engine and a stage 1. Beautiful bike, sounded amazing! I was ready to sign the paperwork before I got around the block, but then I rode a M8 slim and everything changed. I ended up with my ‘21 FXLRS with the 114 but it’s not just the very noticeable increase in power, it was the whole ride quality, the suspension, the handling, the comfort, and yeah, the power. I’d still love to get ahold of a good 103 bike at some point, but if I’m making payments on just one motorcycle I decided it would have to be the M8 bike.

EVO is the best motor for reliability HD ever made. Honestly as a Harley Davidson Certified Master Tech, I won't own a Harley built after 2002 because of the cheap ass bearings that they continue to install in the Crankshaft and Camshaft Compartment. If you absolutely have to have an HD and EFI, buy a 2002. But if ya want a solid reliable motor that has next to no issues as long as you keep up on general maintenance, buy an EVO. My 1997 FLHRPI (has a carb on it) had 298k on it before I rebuilt and my boss's 1986 FXST had 547k before it was ever torn into. You can also build a lot of power out of EVOs with simple upgrades that don't even require a big bore kit. 10.5/1 Compression Pistons, a .510 lift Cam, and a 7 angle Valve Job and an EVO will make 80hp and 80+ FTLBS of Torque. And it'll do it reliably for quite sometime.

Depending on your point of reference. The early and I mean early engines were as good as the competition and often better. The eight valve racers and even the flat head motors were as good as anything else. Even the knuckle head pan or shovel were out there. Alas as the evo arrived it solved many issues but was left so far behind. Twin cam or m8 are in reality 30 or 40 years too late but still 1/2 a century behind.
I will be buying an m8 next year but not because of its progress.

Could you help with one question: I test rode the 2022 M8/ 117 Lowrider S and notice a faint, constant rattling ( or faint clicking sound ) coming from the front of the engine ( especially when it’s under 2000 RPM ), is it normal ? ( I could also hear it when watching videos about the Lowrider S on UA-cam…) Thanks so much.

I had a 2016 twin cam, had valve stem issues at 30,000 so took opportunity to install a stage 3 110. The bike was noisy before but even noisier after upgrade. It immediately destroyed a compensator and even a brand new one was chunking along. I bit the bullet and bought a 114, 2021 and upgraded to a torque cam. The M8 is so much better in power, vibration and heat. It’s a no brainer. If you can afford an M8, just buy one.

I love the sound that my cammed 103 makes. I was going to trade in my slim for an M8 low rider, but I didn't care for the 107. It's a vanilla feeling and sounding motor compared to the twin cam. I do understand that an aftermarket exhaust can remedy that to a certain degree, but it still doesn't sound as raw as the twin cam, in my opinion.

I learned how to be content with what I had and that I really didn’t need the latest and “greatest”. Transferring this experience to my return to motorcycles has allowed me to be truly satisfied with my recently acquired 16 year old Dyna Wide Glide with its 88 inch Twin Cam. Per your comment that the late 103 had most all the problems worked out..Didnt the mid and late model 103 models also have the two piece pressed cranks? I will have to kinda disagree with the summary that they are great engines ..coming to mind..but not talking about the oil sumping issues.. junk Cam Bearings, junk Lifters, two piece cranks (and they now say up to .012 crank turn out is acceptable because they dont want to be responsible, but ask S&S and Fueling what is reasonable)., cast Aluminum cam plates/oil pumps (that shed weak and poorly casted broken particles into the oil and moving engine parts) Plastic lifter cuffs and more.. am I putting down harley?.. I guess so, and dont get me started on the suspension..but I currently have two late models of HDs, so I have license to, and "Motor Company" could have make them great engines, but choose not to so I think the "Motor Company" needs a new nick name..

I noticed going from a cvo 110 to a 107 M8. The Milwaukee felt like a narrow power band. I couldn’t rev it up as high as my twin cam. I had to learn to shift earlier and lean on the torque and grunt to accelerate instead of dropping gears and winding it up. I’m on a Milwaukee 8 114 now and this motor likes to be revved up a little more than the 107 did. I don’t need a tire shredder, this 114 feels really strong. I think from the seat of my pants it would run with if not walk away from a cvo 110. I’m happy with my stock 114. I’ll probably install a cam, exhaust and tune at some point but not high on my priorities right now….. oh, my 114 is getting 47mpg two up. Forget my thoughts of modifications, fuel economy where the bike already feels pretty strong, I’ll keep it stock. I don’t like the road glide tho…. I miss my batwing😢

I have a 96 TC FXSTC and a 103 Road King. Both engines have been trouble free and easy to work on. I am not at all impressed with the M8. The early versions had some serious problems and I'm not convinced that HD has resolved all of them. I'd like the TC better if it had only one cam but it is what it is. Unless sanity comes to the out the door price of a Breakout the chances of me ever buying an M8 new or used is pretty much zero. Should I ever need another Harley I'm just buy a used TC FXSTC, probably a 6-speed. 100 HP (easily attained with a TC) is all the power I need. Chasing ever increasing displacement numbers is a fool's game. I always install an oil cooler first thing and my engine runs cool. Too cool sometimes which is why I have a cover for the cooler.
