How to fix a stuck electric car seat

- This is a repair for a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country. Your repair may be slightly different.
The drivers seat in my van has electric adjustments for forward/backward, up/down, and tilt. I needed to move my drivers seat all the way forward to stow the captain seat in the floor behind my seat. When I tried to use the electric adjustment to move the seat back it was stuck and wouldn’t move. The motor would make a sound but the seat would not move.

I need to fix the power seat in my 98 olds bravada. Tries to move but can't. The side closest to the center console is jammed. Don't know if there is debris in the track or its just rusty

Our electric car seat in our RV is swiveled in the backward facing position and now won't swivel back forward facing. It's because it's supposed to be fully lifted "up" before we turn it around but we had it only partially up when we turned it around, apparently a big no no. Now we can't get it to turn back around. Can't figure out how to unlock whatever has it locked in place the wrong direction.

My seat in the Silverado has seat memory as I programmed it it no longer went full back.
I was going to pull the seat out manually move the seat to full travel back and leave it.
Soon find out if I can do the same as you just did. Then after winter troubleshoot the thing all else works.
My 2007 Siverado driver seat was stuck in the forward position. The motor seemed to struggle over a period of time. I got my seat to move by pushing my seat back hard while pulsing the motor in the back direction. Looking at how the seat is supposed to work, I see a nylon bushing that the rail rides on and my assumption is that it is no longer attached to either the rail or the track and becomes wedged. So this will happen in the forward or back positions. The permanent fix would be to remove the seat, but I don’t think it is worth the effort. No longer will move it close to the ends of travel.

Sometimes the seat goes too far and goes off the rails/tracks. Then you have to manually return it so the motor can control it again.

Hi, do you know if you can do a similar manual adjustment with a drill for when the top part of the seat is stuck in the forward position (recline is stuck in full forward position)? This happened on my 09 Grand Caravan in the same way (stowing the seat directly behind it). Thanks!
My van uses an electronic switch to adjust the back of the seat also, just not sure where the adjustment would be. But If you have an electronic adjustment I think it would opperate the same way.

My 2005 Town and Country driver's seat suffered the same fate. The right side of the seat would not move. I slid the seat all the way forward and when I return the seat to the driving position the right side of the seat would not move. The motor that moves the seat forward and backward works fine. To solve the problem I took a pair of needle nose pliers and rotated the long gear on the right side of the chair. I am talking about the gear the motor is supposed to rotate through gear at the end of the shaft connected to the motor. A slight movement with the pliers freed the chair and now it moves as is should. This was a 15-second fix.
Thanks I will check that out to see if that works on mine. Mine would not move at all. The motor itself moves when the back button is pressed but would not spin the shaft.

No it is not a joke, it just moves very slowly. The video recording wasn’t very good because my autofocus was acting up on my camera. Many other people have commented that this has also worked for them.

( You need the driver's seat ALL the way to the front to be able to flip the stow n' go seat up or down )
Yes, my seat was stuck all the way forward when I was putting the back seat in the floor. I was able to put it back where it needed to go. The button still works to move it forward but stopped working to make it go backwards. But this method with the drill allows forward or backward movement.

not sure, mine was a square head nut on the driver side. i had to remove a plastic cover on the side of my seat to access it.
Trying to understand did this fix the adjustment issue or does the seat still not move with the adjustment button on the side? I will need to use a drill to move the seat every time in the future?
This only fixes the issue of moving the seat into a usable position. I did not discover a permanent fix for getting the button working. I rarely ever use the seat adjustment so I did not look into a solution for that.

So i'd have to always adjust the power seat this way!? Mine will a bit each way but not fully extend or retract.
This was just more just a way to get the seat into a workable position. Long term this would be an annoying way to move the seat every day. That would need another method to repair. This is just kind of a quick fix or hack...
My 2008 town & country also has a .annual levee on the upper part of seat for reclining altho now the seat will not recline.

Yes mine does. It did not affect the buttons working afterwards.

Depends on the reason for the problem. If it was just stuck this may resolve the issue. At the least it gets the seat into a drivable position. If it doesn't fix the seat then a new motor or drive shift may be needed.
I have a 2007 Ford 500 and my seat the motor would let it go all the way back and now it's stuck there I'm only 5 foot and I cannot move my seat up. Social Security so cannot afford to take it into a mechanic my daughter said she would look at it would we would it be the same procedure and where would we get the tool she does have a drill.? Not sure, you would have to look inside your seat.
Our 2005 Town and Country van has a driver seat with a dead electric motor/trac. It moves, but the nylon gears are stripped. It needs a new motor/trac Mopar 5179150AAADJUSTER-Power Seat which has been discontinued by Chrysler. There are no aftermarket replacements to my knowledge. Do any of you know of an aftermarket replacement part, or someone who is rebuilding these? Can I get a manual trac from a junk yard and install in this van? Thanks for your consideration.
All good questions. Unfortunately I do not know. Even though in my video I may look like someone who repairs cars. I am actually a school teacher. I just posted this video for anyone who may have had a similar issue as mine that my repair process could help.
So that will make the seat work or have to do that every time
That was just to get the seat to usable position. It did not make the motor start working again.

Should be able to if your looks the same as the one I say on ebay. You need to remove the plastic side panel where the electronic adjustment buttons are. There should be a few screws holding it in place on the side and in front. This should allow you to see the end of the threaded rod that can be manually adjusted.
Motor works but wont move... The backrest wont move and is stuck in a slouched position and that is supposedly powered

Teacher Dad haha, I do. My 2008 Chevy impala SS has the drivers seat that will go forward and back but not lean forward. We have to have a pillow strapped to the seat to be able to sit comfortably

It is possible that the gears on the motor are stripped, the threaded rod could be stripped or a combination of factors.

sorry not sure basically you are looking for something under your seat that looks like a big long threaded rod. on the end of that rod there should be a manual adjustment option where you can put a square head nut in it. That is if it is the same as mine. Best of luck

I have the same knobs on the side of my driver's seat for my 2007 dodge grand caravan. The forward knob controls tilt of the entire seat and the most rearward knob controls the back rest angle. I can't seem to figure out how to adjust the entire seat backward and forward to allow room for the sto and go seat behind it. . Could you help. Thanks
My seat has two knobs one is the back tilt forward and backward. The other controls up and down of the seat. That button also controls forward and backward control. Slide the entire switch toward the front or back to adjust front and back adjustments.

My seat moves back and forth just fine but I can't get my seat to stay upright...it just falls straight down onto my backseats and I have to prop it up with objects to have a some support to be able to drive 😭

Okay, here's the problem, the drivers seat was pushed up to clean under, there was a toy that jammed it. The toy was removed. The 'sound' still sounded, as the control was pressed to move the seat back. The seat wouldn't move. So, does anyone think it is 1. a rod underneath that may have been bent? 2. something else? or 3. the electric system. Yeah, I already said, the sound sounds for connection to move...just no movement. And everything else works. The car seat back goes back! - Auto place wants 800.00, they say to readjust the electric system!! ....I'll just drive with my knees against the dashboard! --- Sure would appreciate any advice.

More of a hack i guess, unless you carry a drill and the bit with you. I am going to explore a idea that someone proposed to see if it will more permanently fix the problem and will perhaps provide an update to the problem.
Hacks work too brother, as we have to move the seat for use until we could get a new motor. I learned i have the same stem end in my Ram 1500 from the inside. However, no access between the seat. I pulled the motor out and its functional, however the stem inside was shredded! My issues always in the grey area, never A or B! Thanks appreciate you

My issue was with the seat itself not the back. I haven't looked into that part of how the back works. I assume it is similar. Perhaps I will try to do a future video addressing that issue.

if you look under the seat do you see what look like threaded rods attached to the seat bracket? if so see if you can access a removable panel on either side of the seat and whether or not that lets you find a manual control.
This is great for permanently positioning the seat in 1 fixed position, but it doesn't "fix" the problem like your title says.
Correct it would probably be better titled a "hack". I may be trying to release an actual fix in the future by replacing the motor find what else is wrong.
Why does this happen
There are multiple things that could cause the seat to get stuck. In my case it is that the motor seems to be binding up on the gears. I could probably get the parts to actually fix the problem rather than just a "hack" to get the seat back into the correct position. I may look into this for a future video. Other reasons could be an electrical malfunction if the motor is not engaging at all. The switch itself could also go bad and not send the signal to the motor. Those are a few possible causes but each seat "problem" could be unique.

doesn’t move very fast. it is a threaded rod attached to the gears under the seat. so does move fairly slow. gets the seat moved back though. first time i discovered this i had to drive home with my knees in the dash cause I didn’t know how to fix it.
Sure, that MOVES the seat. However, it does NOT "fix" the problem. You need to re-title this video to "How to MOVE a stuck seat>" Just saying...
Depends on what you mean by fix... Seat stuck all the way front, can't drive the van. Move seat, can drive van... But I agree it is perhaps more of a "hack". I would like to possibly find out what is wrong some time so that it can be adjusted with the button again. I have had many people thank me though because it "fixed" their problem.
