The game does show the "why" for Raul's motivations. The relationship with his sister is all he had left, in the beginning of the game or so you see a cutscene of her preventing him from suicide as kids, while she gets burned, she kinda becomes his personal reason to keep on living in that moment, besides the already established hatred for the U.S.A, her killing goes on to make it stronger and darker, he's not just living for her & and ideology anymore, his living for retribution
yes, raul's entire life had been ruined by the americans and his sister was the one thing he had left, when that too was gone, his hatred for america only grew. at one point he loses his mind and is driven to kill all those he felt were responsible for it.
I remember I played it all the time and got super good at it I would run insane matches and be a beast at the game, and then my Copy stopped working and I just never managed to reach the last prestige level, the PS3 data is still there and the game never worked again. Sad times
Even BO4 is a bit futuristic, and it still has people running at 20 MPH with no stamina limit, it's a good game, but not as good as the old days, like I said, still the best COD in years.
@@absolutemonarchy307 i love how its fast paced. And thats why i loved bo2? Lol if you had a full lobby of good players, it was very fast paced lol. Idk what you played but it wasnt bo2 lol
I know this is an old review, but just to counter argue your point about why Mason doesn't show up for 40 years. It's very obvious. Menendez was still out there at large and a serious threat. If he was believed to be dead, Mason was safe. Once Menendez is either dead or in custody, it's finally safe for Alex to come out of hiding and reveal he is alive and well
@@mr.rufasi2729 ik this is old but Mason couldn't stop him. number one Mason was very old, and after the incident of getting shot he most likely had to hide for a while to heal his leg while trying to stay off the grid. even after he healed, guarantee his leg was still too damaged to go back into fighting
I don’t think Mason would completely cut ties with his son and Woods, even if Menendez was that powerful. Mason has faced worse odds and pushed forward all the same. I think it would have been better if we were given the option to either shoot the guards or not shoot at all, in which Mason is then killed by Menendez and Woods is blind-sided and captured by Noriega. On a separate note, there’s no way I can believe Woods would listen to Noriega and shoot someone dragged in front of him. He’d at least demand the hood be removed.
Black Ops 2 proved that call of duty taking place in the future isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just needs quality gameplay and an interesting story.
black ops 1 was the last one i even bothered to buy, mw3 looked so samey to mw2, and black ops 2 just looked even more samey somehow, but maybe i was wrong after watching this video.

This was the last of the golden era COD games. 2007 - 2012 was COD's best years. Modern Warfare World at War Modern Warfare 2 Black Ops Modern Warfare 3 Black Ops 2.
All of the technology in this game is stuff that I could see being made and used in the military in the next 5 to 10 years and it wouldve been cool to see them focus a tiny bit more on the tech
Also the weapons were either based on real world firearms, (XM8, M27, SCAR-H, Kel Tec KSG, FN Five Seven) and prototypes yet to be used (KAP40, SMR, M1216) or updated models of real guns, such as PDW-57 looking like an updated P90. These weren’t guns made from scratch and having inspiration, but real world basis
@Anakin Skywalker I reckon there could be something similar to it. Maybe like a suit which changes to a different camo depending on what environment they are in.

15:00 uh yes we did learn why Raul’s sister was so important. They literally say in the game about how after his family was burned in a fire by the work of the government, she was all that he had left.
ZeUberStriker yeah but it’s still the reason for it all. So there never was no reason. And the reasoning may be lazy, but the way they told you about it, and introduce it all, really isn’t
@@zeuberstriker TL;DR: The concept may be lazy, but it all depends on how you take on the concept. Sometimes, they may be some overplayed tropes and storytelling gimmicks that get old and repetitive, but sometimes, you get one story where they have a take on the trope and make it interesting.
What I loved about the story so much is how plausible it all is. And how it makes a point to contrast modern (futuristic) warfare against the past and how US actions in the past in other countries can come back to haunt us. Raul Menendez, his whole social media uprising, social unrest, disillusionment with patriotism, the over reliance on technology and drones, cyberwarfare, I feel like they really did their homework when writing this one.
Well, to be fair it's explained that Menendez's father was assassinated by the CIA and his sister was almost killed in an insurance scam fire. So his sister is literally his only family who survived nearly being burned alive only to be killed young anyway. So although it's not very realistic it's still a serviceable story and grounded in reality some.
Yeah, it's fine and all, but I'm surprised you didn't show the intro cutscene of the game. The one that plays the very first time you boot up the game where you get to see the Menendez and his sister as children. It was honestly pretty emotional and another great highlight of campaign.
fun fact: in black ops declassified, the ps vita version of bo1, you actually get to play a mission as mason where you kill rauls father. its a shame you need the vita version to actually play this, but it gives more insight to menedez character. when he saw his father get shot he ran for it, he wasn't born a monster. america molded his hatred, mason made it grow to its highest. menedez is a super detailed character. his motivations are rooted in history. the reason his country was impoverished and forced his father into a cartel was because of america starting the Contra War. a war which happened in real life during the cold war, in which CIA backed forces would face off against communist forces, both sides murdering many innocents. this is one of many examples of americas endemic corruption and brutality. the fact that people who have the same exact mindset as menedez for almost the same exact reasoning is why he's such a good villain. there are many others like him, though none of them could realistically achieve what he did.
Most guns in the game existed back in 2012 , or at least were prototypes. Instead of the BB guns of Black Ops 3/4 , those weapons both looked and sounded like Nerf Toys
It is actually very explainable why Menendez is as bloodthirsty as he is... its constantly explained. The CIA smoked his father, of whom he and menendez made a wealthy living through illicit means - drug smuggling, gun running, etc. His sister was essentially his only family left, and she was left burnt and blind at a young age after a fire, to which Menendez devoted his life to protecting her, she became his last remaining vessel for what a good life could feel like. Losing her meant losing the only thing moving him forward in life. With nothing left to lose, he took out his long growing anger - to Woods and Mason for killing his Sister, and to America for killing his father and causing so much trouble globally due to its covert imperialistic methods. It's very much explained what his backstory and motivation is.
also he explains his sister and the fire more when he says that an american started the fire for insurance money, putting the worker's lives on the line for $11,000. it is a major reason why he hates america and capitalism
Minty Coffee having exposition explained to us like that is bad storytelling. “Show don’t tell” should always be the way to go, we should have SEEN and played through the making of Raul Menendez
@@AustinU25 This was actually shown, with the scene before the game even starts. It shows the clips of the warehouse burning down and a young boy holding a burning girl; figuring that she died, he attempts to kill himself with the locket before hearing the words "Don't Leave Me" yelled out by the girl.
I was young when i played WaW, MW 2 (And MW3 and BO1-2 but i remember them a lot more). It is a big shame that i don't completely remember the campaign that i know i loved so much at the time (My favourite being WaW). You have no idea when you live in the gold age of a game you love.
Him: Shits on tranzit Zombies community: Thats fair, it shouldve been shelved for next gen. Him: Shits on Mob of the Dead Zombies community: Well hey now...
well to be honest his argument for mob to me makes no sense, he says he would explore kino and der riese to the ends of the earth when it comes to the lore and story in those 2 maps yet that is the purpose of Mob of the dead in the first place, Mob is the story map of black ops 2, Mob of the Dead is what every black ops 3 and 4 map wish it was story wise, The story in Mob is fantastic from the crew to the overall setting and the idea of these 4 gangsters trapped in purgatory with them stuck in a loop trying to constantly escape but always ending up on the golden gate bridge and then eventually dying and then coming back to life to repeat the cycle all over again, Mob also easily has the best dialogue out of any zombies map period with the crew having badass and funny quotes but you can also hear them slowly start to emotionally breakdown when they get to pack a punch and they realize that they cant escape with them yelling at the sky questioning life and just wanting to die wanting the cycle to end wanting to rest. I understand why he calls Mob tedious with its long setup process but it really isnt as bad as he described it, to me the setup gets easier the more you replay the map because the steps required to get the plane parts aren't even that hard in the first place all your really doing is just shocking a few boxes in different locations and there you go, the hells retriever isn't that bad either and the free blundergat is pretty simple to get when you have the locations down and the acid gat parts are in pretty easy to find. Overall though i understand why he calls Mob tedious it can be very tough for a beginner but he missed the point of Mob of the Dead being a story map.
@@jamesmcgrath8392 I bought bo2 3 days ago, I played mob and on my first game I figured out how to obtain all the plane parts, and on my second game I built the plane, I didn’t search up a tutorial. Mob is pretty easy to figure out, the only thing in the map you need to search up is the shield, and the acid gat parts, and the map is easy as with afterlife giving free self revives, since the map flows so well it’s not tedious all the parts are placed near perks and important places in the map, so it doesn’t feel like a chore to get the bare minimum.

@@Black-ops-guy mason and woods live actually if you get the good ending. Which to me is perfect, they deserve to survive. I just wish woods dying get crippled
15:05 Actually (and yeah you can criticize it for being a bit hidden) there’s a clip that plays when you stay at the main menu for long enough (maybe some other places) that shows Josefina saving Raul from the fire caused by the CIA torching the Menendez drug cartel. This causes her to be burned and disfigured, which is why the solider says she looks like a freak, and also why Raul gets so pissed off at this comment and also why He feels so indebted to her.
Which also adds more pain to Menendez considering the fact his father died and the only family he had left was Josefina, seeing his people also get caught in the crossfire and abused by Noriega's men just added more fuel to his fiery hate to americans. And the salt that really burned the wound was Woods indirectly killing his sister with a grenade because his rage towards Menendez. At this point he lost everything he loved and everything that kept him from being an absolute monster, the US did nothing but destabilize his country and leave him as a lone man, so his hatred towards the US is justifiable.
Actually, it was an American torching the warehouse for insurance money. $11,000. I believe Menendez mentioned this during his interrogation on Odysseus
I actually loved BO2 depiction of near future, it gave slightly dystopic and cyberpunk-like atmosphere. Also loved its story as Second Cold War between US and West vs. China and East.
That one particular scene in the BO2 campaign where you were jumping over furniture in the club and blasting people with the pistol in slowmo while Skrillex played BLEW MY FRESHMAN MIND
I need clorox Bleach No, you’re talking about the Campaign’s theme. That’s the eerie one. The multiplayer theme is wayyyy more pumped up than Black ops 1. It’s called “Adrenaline.” It’s very good.
With Menendez' relationship with his sister, I swear there was a scene that showed her saving him from a house fire and being proper scarred by it, and that's why he holds her so dearly, no?
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. There is definitely a lot of reasons he holds his sister so close. They've been through a lot, and they are the only family they had left. Not to mention his hatred for Americans in the first place (who are the reason she got burnt so bad in the fire) but when woods killed her he had plenty of reasons to do what he did. That part of the video felt rushed and like he didn't do as much research as he could have.
@@ForeHead. And also the general view of Americans in Latin America at the era. (Like how they just made coups, set dictatorships, and took all the national resources of other lands just for themselves).
Probably not as funny but I personally laughed a bit at lines like "Nurse Batshit! Where's my smokes?!" and "Ah you're all a couple of fuckin broads! Work this shit out on your own."
Transit suffered a lot from the tech at the time. They added in the fog, fire, and denizens (the things you have to knife off your face) to slow you down, because the map was so big and innovative, that the last gen literally couldn't handle it.
@Shifty Nifty Yeah, they were dreaming to high and so they had to add the fog so you wouldn’t see the loading in. I hope they remaster it without the fog
Menendez had lost his family after the CIA had taken out his father when they had to go to drug running after they lost everything in an earthquake, he saw this as America’s fault so after he lost his sister he wanted the world to “suffer with me”
Toe Sniffa She was already burnt I believe. When the guy that goes after her looks at her face he goes “what is this monster” and slams her, prompting Menendez to rage and stab him.

I played over 500 hardpoint/SnD gamebattles then had over 100 days played on multiplayer. This game sucked up my time from 7th grade to sophomore year of high school.
the lords crusaders no i think that isn‘t true as he says „mullah rahman, do not concern yourself with local politics“ that means he worked WITH rahman _(he tells them the americans must suffer, rahman betrays them in the end)_ and WITH kravchenko _(sold him weapons)_ which leads to the conclusion that menendez worked with two sides
Menendez is the best villain in the series by far, every other villain is the most cartoonishly evil trope of character. But for Menendez, you actually feel for him, and understand why he does the things he does. Also Bo2 had the most balanced multiplayer by far, everything has a counter, the substitution of scorestreaks instead of kill streaks urges people to play the objective, and Bo2 also undeniably had the best competitive scene. Bo2 zombies also had arguably the two best maps in the history of zombies, Mob of the Dead and Origins. Best Cod, change my mind.
The only issue with multiplayer I had with BO2 is the quick scopers and trick shooters. (Played on PS3) But for the most part, I enjoyed multiplayer. Coming back to MP though on Xbox One via backward compatibility, I honestly don't like it due to the hacking. I would be willing to get back to Master Prestige and get my diamond camo snipers back, but not at the expense of it being ill-gotten. Love the campaign but I wish they expanded on the Strike missions (especially in later games, but to no avail, unfortunately). The reason I wish they expanded on Strike missions is that it was a good mix of RTS gameplay mixed with FPS. If it incorporated RTS a little more and/or better, it would have really sold to me on a deeper level. I know that it wouldn't sell to many who aren't an RTS fan, but it would be nice since those missions are optional anyway.
@@Quurze Yeah I definitely agree, snipers should not be a sniper and shotgun in one. Snipers should have close to no chance at winning a close range gun fight, and yet whenever I run up on a sniper in close quarters, I'm 85% sure I'll get barrel stuffed, but I still appreciate how they made every class of weapons viable to use. And yeah the Strike missions were never a selling point.

@@Go-Go-Guts No need, I agree with you. BO2 had the best system for multiplier, and it's crazy how the other COD games after BO2 didn't use it for theirs. Zombies was, in my opinion, was a bit mixed even with MOTD and Origins packed with it. But I actually had fun with Tranzit and Nuketown (planning to get all the maps now that I've got a console and the game) since it helped me learn how to get good with the game. Campaign was awesome, since they made new innovations with how you can play it. Raul Menendaz is definitely one of the best COD antagonists since you can relate with him and his character is made to be organic rather than being a cartoon villian or standard movie/video game villain.
Man BO2 was the first and last time I bought all the DLCs for a CoD game. DLC Zombie maps were absolute bomb. Had so much fun with my friends back in the day, I was 12 or 13 but I still remember everything. Good times.
To be fair, the reason why Raul was so attached to Josefina is because she is the only comfort the world brings to him. His family is involved in the drug cartel, putting himself in a bad spot. He have seen the worst of humanity because of it and his sister is the only good that he sees in this world
His story is kinda sad, I liked that part of the mission where you play as menendez in the cartel compound that’s under siege and your running around with a machete lol
When you realize that the setting of Black Ops 2 takes place 4 years from now and we're still nowhere near the level of technology envisioned in that game.
"In the future, we might have drone wars," It's quite happening right now. Something is prophetic about BO2, I think, and it would be way scarier if a sort of Menendez figure actually comes out IRL.

One key point to the campaigns replayability is that the challenges unlocked new (really interesting) weapons, abilities and camos, that you could use for almost all missions when replaying
Honestly, the loadouts system made singleplayer replays so much fun. Like: Hudson: MASON THE BOATS ARE CLOSING IN! USE THE MOUNTED GUNS TO Mason: (holding a WAR MACHINE minigun from the future) Turret sections are for P U S S I E S! LEEROOOOOOOY JEEEENKENZ

I recently replayed Black Ops 2: It was my favorite as a kid and it was recently on sale. It really does hold up to this day. The campaign is amazing and, well, multiplayer may only have 400~ ish people but just the campaign alone was worth it. I'm playing through BOps1 again now, but 2 will always have a good place in my heart.
@Dead Man Walking And NOT black ops 3 or 4. They both had 'black ops' in the title, but Black ops 3 had nothing to do with bo1 or 2, and black ops 4 dosen't even have a story. WaW should've been called bo1, bo1 should've been bo2 and bo2 should've been bo3. this would've made for the PERFECT trilogy. but these games in my eyes, are the best in the cod series. I think infinity ward and treyarch just stopped caring after bo2, which is why I bo2 was my favorite COD game, and was the last good call of duty game that wasn't a soft reboot/ remaster.
@@officialprincelouie Agreed. The only thing that connects the original 3 games with BO3 is one scene with Nova Six and a small mention of Raul Menendez. BO4 didn't have a campaign, but it kind of had a better connection to the old games than BO3, but then again the connections were also very small. If the series' main story had to end, I'd pick BO2 to be that end. The canon ending of the game wrapped things up nicely, and the Avenged Sevenfold concert was amazing, even though it isn't canon. BO3 and BO4 feel more like side-stories or expansions that don't add anything to the overall Black Ops story.
@@saintcd775 it's nice to know that someone agrees with me. if you want, pretty soon, i plan to replay these games and eventually review them on my youtube channel with only one video.Subcribe if you want!
To me, it was such a brilliant move to set the campaign in the near future of 2025. Because it's unique, it's not a thing you usually see. If some type of Media goes for a futuristic style they usually go all the way and present a much more distant future. What makes the near future setting way more interesting, in my opinion, is that almost everything is plausible. Sure some things like the magic gloves may be a little over the top but who really knows, with how fast technology advances nowadays it could exist in the near future.
And most of the tech is very convincing, specially the whole "Using drones for combat" like the Quads, ASDs and CLAWs. Another good factor is the abundance of technological and information war, cyber attacks and such would be more common in a world with tecnology like this
@@frazza5503 I like it, but I also don't like it at the same time. It is fun when you have a group to play with to do the Easter eggs and the adventure to get the pack a punch, but when you play alone or when you play the map a lot it gets a little tedious. Therefore, I find it's best to have some maps be like kino der toten with an "easy" to reach pack a punch and perks but have a Easter egg that is complicated and gives you some sort of bonus weapon or a buy-able ending, but then have the opposite map where you go on an adventure to get the pack a punch so you can appease both types of players.

This. I can't believe he didn't get that, I understood him on my first playthrough

I know this is an old review, but just to counter argue your point about why Mason doesn't show up for 40 years. It's very obvious. Menendez was still out there at large and a serious threat. If he was believed to be dead, Mason was safe. Once Menendez is either dead or in custody, it's finally safe for Alex to come out of hiding and reveal he is alive and well
I kinda get this logic but at the same time I don’t think mason would hide away from menendez he would try to stop him
@@mr.rufasi2729 ik this is old but Mason couldn't stop him. number one Mason was very old, and after the incident of getting shot he most likely had to hide for a while to heal his leg while trying to stay off the grid. even after he healed, guarantee his leg was still too damaged to go back into fighting
Honestly they should make a black ops game about what he did in that timespan
@@jurassicarkjordanisgreat1778 or a comic would be fine too
I don’t think Mason would completely cut ties with his son and Woods, even if Menendez was that powerful.

Yep! And that's what matters! So my only real issue with the story isn't even a big one

Him: Shits on Mob of the Dead
Zombies community: Well hey now...
Too far 😡
well to be honest his argument for mob to me makes no sense, he says he would explore kino and der riese to the ends of the earth when it comes to the lore and story in those 2 maps yet that is the purpose of Mob of the dead in the first place, Mob is the story map of black ops 2, Mob of the Dead is what every black ops 3 and 4 map wish it was story wise, The story in Mob is fantastic from the crew to the overall setting and the idea of these 4 gangsters trapped in purgatory with them stuck in a loop trying to constantly escape but always ending up on the golden gate bridge and then eventually dying and then coming back to life to repeat the cycle all over again, Mob also easily has the best dialogue out of any zombies map period with the crew having badass and funny quotes but you can also hear them slowly start to emotionally breakdown when they get to pack a punch and they realize that they cant escape with them yelling at the sky questioning life and just wanting to die wanting the cycle to end wanting to rest.

It’s explained in a cutscene before a mission which I can’t remember the name of
Yeah I was about to say that it is shown that she's the only family he has left
Which also adds more pain to Menendez considering the fact his father died and the only family he had left was Josefina, seeing his people also get caught in the crossfire and abused by Noriega's men just added more fuel to his fiery hate to americans.
And the salt that really burned the wound was Woods indirectly killing his sister with a grenade because his rage towards Menendez.
At this point he lost everything he loved and everything that kept him from being an absolute monster, the US did nothing but destabilize his country and leave him as a lone man, so his hatred towards the US is justifiable.

Good times.
Same actually
You missed out on WAW and BO1. They had some great zombies. It was also the last time I bought cod DLC too.
To be fair, the reason why Raul was so attached to Josefina is because she is the only comfort the world brings to him. His family is involved in the drug cartel, putting himself in a bad spot. He have seen the worst of humanity because of it and his sister is the only good that he sees in this world
Also his family died in an earthquake which Salazar explained so Josefina was literally his only family left.
His story is kinda sad, I liked that part of the mission where you play as menendez in the cartel compound that’s under siege and your running around with a machete lol
Like john wick with his dog
His dad got killed by the CIA and his sister only wanted to live for him.
@@alexwest2573 Some parts are tragic, but Menendez brought a lot of shit down on himself. You can even argue he caused his sister's death.

The original Black Ops Trilogy should be remastered.
(World at War, Black Ops 1, Black Ops 2)
Yes

@Slyphie The Forest Elf what if cordials dia was actually a real thing and we didn’t even know about it
And most of the tech is very convincing, specially the whole "Using drones for combat" like the Quads, ASDs and CLAWs. Another good factor is the abundance of technological and information war, cyber attacks and such would be more common in a world with tecnology like this
Also the technology is part of the plot in a very believable fashion, such as Menendez using social media to start wars
I felt like since the gloves ended up failing mid mission, it made that tech seem so much more plausible. Other than that, I completely agree.
We're much closer to 2025 now...
"You like doing that every time you play this game?"
Zombies community: yes
exactly, if shit was easy then it would just be boring
yeah i honestly liked having to get plane parts to pack a punch, simplicity is not always needed.
@@dmitryivanov5411 I didnt like how zombies focused on fetch quests but at least the maps tried to reconcile both types of players to an extent. As long as there was a way to get whatever you wanted on solo it was fine. Not great but it worked.

@@judgejudys3xdungeon94 Makarov was still a character. He was a simplistic antagonist, but he was one nonetheless.
