Love it - one of my favourite Damned songs ever pumped out in true fashion by another band I love - Blondie - with the inimitable velvet voice of Debbie Harry adding a new twist - what's not to love!
Saw them do this last night. It was a true come true the classic American band doing one of the true punk classics. Boy didn't the little girls love it.
The best cover I've heard since Slaves did "Daft Punk is playing at my house". Debbie's vocals give a great sleazy quality to the song, as opposed to Dave Vanian's frustrated angry punk teenager version on the original. Nowadays he croons it live, but Hey, it's all good. The Damned are awesome, very underrated. Deborah and Blondie are, of course, pop legends. Thanks for uploading, little gems like this are fantastic when you just stumble upon them. 🎸🎤🎙️👠
The best Damned covers are, predictably, by the Tokyo Damned, their tribute band; only Disco Man is on UA-cam, but their drummer does a better imitation of Rat Scabies than Clem Burke. Does the Tokyo Damned have the second best drummer in the world?
Funnily enough, in the first year of punk, he made it into a Sounds or NME poll of top 10 drummers. For me, he will always be the best. John Maher of the Buzzcocks was great, as well.
Savage, at least compared to some of the earlier stuff. Rip-snorting Blondie - gotta love it. Earns high marks, many points and repeated listening in this house...
DAMN!!! Pun intended too! I was so hoping they'd do this when I saw them. We got "You Can't Put Your Arm Around A Memory" ... I'm so greedy...I wanted both ; )
New Rose From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "New Rose" is the first single by British punk rock] group the Damned, released on 22 October 1976 on Stiff Records, and in 1977 in the Netherlands, Germany and France. It is considered to be the first single by a British punk group. Written by guitarist Brian James, "New Rose" was also included on the group's full-length debut album, Damned Damned Damned. The deadpan intro by singer Dave Vanian ("Is she really going out with him?") parodied the 1964 Shangri-Las song "Leader of the Pack". The single's B-side was a cover of the Beatles' hit "Help!", performed about twice as fast as the original. Both songs became staples of the Damned's live shows, and appeared on various compilations. "New Rose" was reissued in Stiff's Damned 4 Pack mail-order set. Original copies had a press-out centre, while reissues had a solid centre. Copies from the four-pack had matrix details: "Bilbo tape" handwritten and "AY 50332" printed. A CD version was issued in the Stiff Singles 1976-1977 boxed set by Castle Music in 2003. "Help!" also appeared on Hits Greatest Stiffs.
I didn't understand what you meant when you said the damed, the only time i've heard of "The Damned" is on a plasmitics cd and they also had a video of that song, I had no idea it was a group, but I guess i've heard them because I thought I've heared this song be4. I love this song!!

Great cover by Blondie. Whats with these 2 below? what has WW got to do with this song or cutting up a guitar? I mean how original to break up a guitar on stage "really".

Ive been into The Damned for 30 years and so in my opinion its shameful that you didn't know they originally performed 'New Rose'. It was intended as joke - hence the exclaimation mark.
Hey everyone! I recently uploaded a cover of this song, doing something really different with it, and I would really love to hear any feedback on it. Thanks!

This really works - Debbie does it the Blondie Way - good job Clem!
A true Punk goddess. The band knows exactly what punk was about. Shame they did not live it for a few more years.
Only this very first Punksong from Europe deserves to be played by this iconic Band BLONDIE again. Goood job, Debbie.
Great song and Blondie does it really well.
I was expecting Blondified pap, but respect for respecting the original and doing a great job.
New Rose and Stab Your Back two punk songs that fundamentally affected my next life thanks for this version as well

Pretty cool! 😎
The superb Clem Burke in The Damned , now there's a thought !!!!!
Like sexual eeh.
Pinch has now left the Damned...
The ways clear for Clem?
Personally I can't stand his overplayed, heavyhanded but not heavy playing style.
Rat had issues. It could have happened.
This puts a massive grin on my face.Don't know why?
Damned fine Clem Scabies on the drums
too cool!!
Pretty good cover. Band so tight.
Great cove of The Damned
Deborah Harry....droooooooooollll!!

New rose for ever
Cool AF!
can imagine The Pretenders covering this well too...
Happy to educate. I'm a fan of Plasmatics too. There's also a film called The Damned too. All unrelated to the band.

rocks.
I am familiar with both Blondie and The Damned courtesy of my Dad (b. 1964).
This is more a reconstruction than a cover proper, but It is as fun as hell!
Not too shabby.
Not a bad cover 👍
yeah
Way better than the GnR version

it was like "What was that?"; "We have to record that too"

A laid back but good version.
Google Lyrics:
I got a feeling inside of me
It's kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don't know why I don't know why
I guess these things have got to be
I gotta new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town
See the sun see the sun it shines
Don't get too close or it'll burn your eyes
Don't you run away that way
You can come back another day
I got a new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town
I never thought this could happen to me
This is strange why should it be
I don't deserve somebody this great
I'd better go or it'll be too late
I got a feeling inside of me
It's kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don't know why I don't know why
I guess these things have got to be
I got a new rose I got her good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town
One of the few covers that sounds better than the real thing ... lovely Debbie nailed it !
+boum62 Clem Burke better than Rat Scabies? Really? And a 60 year old Debbie Harry better than a teenaged Dave Vanian?
If you're not joking, you apparently aren't a music fan.
@@devilsforkdigital1490 Music is subjective !
The original version written and produces by The Damned in 1976 blows this out of the water.
Produced by Nick Lowe, actually ;-)
True ,but this version is pretty good.
Nothing can better the damned,s original version but I think blondie have done a good job ! Miles better than guns and roses version
it blew 'everything' out of the water!
